New COVID variant ‘Omicron’ described as ‘horrific, more contagious’ than Delta

0

And there is another one to worry about again.

A new covid-19 variant was discovered in South Africa and it is expected to be more contagious than the Delta variant and as what one scientist described it, this new variant is “horrific”.

What we know so far?

This newly identified coronavirus variant was recently designated as a variant of concern and named “Omicron” by the World Health Organization (WHO) last November 26.

Incredibly heavily mutated

The covid-19 virus has countless mutations in each variant and while some diminishes its effect or are just unnoticeable, there will always be those that would mutate differently for the worse.

According to Lawrence Young, a virologist, it is the most heavily mutated version they have seen to date. It carries an accumulation of sort of all changes from previous other variants. – Virologist and Professor of molecular oncology at Warwick Medical School in the United Kingdom

According to Prof. Tulio de Oliveira, it had an evolution jump and has many more mutations (50) than expected. – Director of South Africa’s Center for Epidemic Response and Innovation

Much more Contagious

As we’ve known as of last week, it was the Delta variant that took the spot for the fastest spread capacity but it looks like Omicron will take that spot now.

According to Dr. Ashish Jha, it acts differently than other previous variants and is expected to be much more contagious than even the Delta variant which was already a very fast spread in itself. –Dean of Brown University’s School of Public Health

According to Prof. Sharon Peacock, that based on its current epidemiological data, it may be more transmissible as many of mutations are consistent with enhanced transmissibility. –Professor of Public Health and Microbiology at the University of Cambridge

A lot of countries have already made new travel restrictions and some are banning travelers from several Southern African countries though it has already been detected in Botswana, Hong Kong and Belgium.

While ore studies will be conducted to see the current vaccines effectivity against Omicron, we should all be vigilant in our actions to ensure safety for us all.

Netflix’s Korean thriller Hellbound is set to be the next big hit

Hellbound, the epitome of dystopia envisioned by Director Yeon Sang-ho, is a global phenomenon. Hellbound is a Netflix Series on supernatural events caused by otherworldly beings who appear out of nowhere to issue a decree and condemn individuals to hell, causing mayhem and enabling the religious group The New Truth to grow in power and clash with those trying to uncover the truth.

According to Netflix’s Global Top 10 Website, Hellbound recorded an accumulated 43.48 million hours watched 3 days since its release, and ranked number 1 in the top 10 list in 12 countries, including not only South Korea but also Singapore, Hong Kong, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, crowning it as Netflix’s Global Top 10 TV (Non-English) as of the 24th (Wednesday).

Also landed in the Top 10 List in 59 countries including India, US, France and Germany. This result is more outstanding considering Hellbound‘s record only includes 3 days’ sum of the viewing hours out of the week (November 15th to 21st) since its release was on Nov 19th.

Hellbound’s superb reception was anticipated even before its release. Global interest in K-Content is at its peak following Squid Game, and Director Yeon Sang-ho has already awed global audiences before with Train to Busan. What added to the hype was Hellbound’s partial release in prestigious global film festivals, such as Toronto International Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival and Busan International Film Festival, where the series was acclaimed for its quality.

As expected, Hellbound won the hearts of global viewers. In addition to co-writing the original webtoon series, Director Yeon Sang-ho took charge of co-writing the script and directing to expand his own unique universe. With the shocking and refreshing premise of sentencing people to hell, Director Yeon awes and stimulates the audience, forcing them to ask questions on universal topics like life and death, crime and punishment, and justice. On top of that is the stellar cast lineup of seasoned actors – Yoo Ah-in, Kim Hyun-joo, Park Jung-min, Won Jin-ah, Yang Ik-june – that lures the audience to Hellbound.

Netflix launched its “TOP 10” website on the 17th, which unveils lists of the most popular series and films on Netflix on a weekly basis. The weekly lists are based on the total number of view hours, updated every week on Tuesday (PST / 4AM every Wednesday Philippine Time) with data from Monday through Sunday. The list is separated into English and non-English, and Film and TV.

Malacanang declares November 29 – December 1 as ‘National Vaccination Days’

0

On November 23, during his pre-recorded address, President Rodrigo Duterte said that “everyone” must be vaccinated against COVID-19.

“Kailangan talaga lahat mabakunahan. Ang mga ayaw, they should not be allowed inside public restaurants or resorts because they are a threat to public health and the safety of the general public,” he said.

Photo from Presidential Communications (Government of the Philippines)

On November 24, President Rodrigo Duterte just signed Proclamation No. 1253 declaring the dates November 29 to December 1, 2021 as National COVID-19 Vaccination Days. All employees, both in the government and the private sector, could get themselves vaccinated on November 29 – December 1, 2021. Should they be taking their jabs on these dates, they will not be considered absent from work.

Eventhough the Philippines is currently at a low risk of COVID-19, the Department of Health’s COVID-19 projections has shown that active cases could spike to two to three times higher by the end of the year.

Hence, may we all be reminded of the importance of getting ourselves vaccinated to protect ourselves and our loved ones.
