5 Cinemas reopening in Cebu City this December

Closed for almost two years, five cinemas in Cebu City have been given the green light to reopen their doors to movie patrons.

The five include SM Seaside City’s Director’s Club which is for private group viewing only, two cinemas in Ayala Center-Cebu, and two cinemas at Central Bloc at the IT Park in Barangay Apas.

According to Cebu City Emergency Operations Center deputy chief implementer and City Councilor Joel Garganera, it is now up to the owners or management of these cinemas when they intend to reopen to the public.

He assured, though, that before arriving at this decision, there were prior inspections made.

As to when (opening), depende na lang na kay centralized man sila sa head office. So wala pa makadesider kanus-a i-open,” said Garganera.

Garganera said that for cinemas to be allowed to reopen, among the considerations are capacity and airflow.

He added that for a good airflow, doors have to be kept open and that there should be exhaust fans.

To monitor the CO2 level, the EOC has recommended the use of the non-dispersive infrared process (NDIR) tool.

Only for fully-vaxxed

Under the new classification scheme of the Inter-Agency Task Force, Cebu City is under alert level 2, which means cinemas and movie houses are already allowed to operate.

Based on the IATF guidelines, such establishments are allowed at a maximum of 50% indoor venue capacity for fully vaccinated individuals and those below 18 years of age. This is further subject to the condition that all workers/employees of these establishments are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and the minimum public health standards shall be strictly maintained.

Then again, the reopening of these establishments is still subject to the discretion of the local government unit.

In Cebu City, the EOC has recommended that only fully-vaccinated individuals will be allowed to watch movies in cinemas.

Although more establishments and activities have already been allowed to reopen, Garganera also reminded everyone that “COVID-19 is still around.”

He also encouraged the unvaccinated ones to get the vaccine now “before it’s too late.”

New Alzheimer’s vaccine may reverse memory loss

A vaccine against the tragedy that is Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) may reverse memory loss.

This is what researchers from the US and Germany suggests as it was able to do so in their mice trials of said vaccine.

Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia. It affects the part of the brain responsible for thoughts, memories and language and it is progressive which makes it the worst to the person and to their family.

Photo from neurologyspecialties.com

How the vaccine works

Protollin is the substance used in the vaccine to stimulate the immune system. The vaccine activates your immune system where they fight to clear the beta amyloid plaques in the brain that accumulates in people with dementia.

The vaccine is expected to be a nontoxic treatment that would prevent Alzheimer’s in people at risk and slow Alzheimer’s disease on others.

Nasal vaccine clinical trial

After nearly 20 years of research led by Dr. Howard L. Weiner, they are now eager to move to the human clinical trials after their success on the animal trials.

This Phase I clinical trial aims to determine the safety and tolerability/dosage of the nasal vaccine to each patient. The next phase of the trials go well will be focused on its effectiveness.

Phase I clinical trial

  • Location: Brigham and Women’s Hospital
  • Participants: 16 participants between the ages of 60 and 85
  • with early symptomatic Alzheimer’s but generally healthy

This has been a very long and exhausting battle for everyone affected by Alzheimer’s Disease. Hopefully this vaccine will work to ease the sadness and pain in this world.

Ayala Cebu cinemas to reopen this November 30

0

Nothing beats watching movies on the big screen. The atmosphere, the surround sound, and just the overall feels just hit differently.

Cebu, like many other places in the country, has already been placed under the ‘more relaxed’ Alert Level 2 that allows re-opening of the cinemas for the first time since the lockdown and quarantines have begun. With this, according to Ayala Center Cebu Management, the official reopening date for its cinemas will be on November 30, 2021.

This announcement is just in time to give us hope on watching the most anticipated Marvel movies, the Eternals as well as to give us plenty of time to get our vaccine shots.

As of this time, all we know is that only vaccinated individuals are allowed to enter the malls and enjoy the cinemas for now.

ALERT LEVEL 2

Alert level 2 in definition by the “Guidelines on the Implementation of Alert Levels System for Covid-19 Response in Pilot Areas”, refers to areas wherein case transmission is low and decreasing, healthcare utilization is low or case counts are low but increasing, or case counts are low and decreasing but total bed utilization rate and intensive care unit utilization rate is increasing.

  • Social events such as parties, wedding receptions, debut, birthday and reunions
  • Tourist attractions such as museums, galleries, exhibits, parks, public gardens and scenic viewpoints or overlooks
  • Amusement parks/theme parks

These alert levels system though are new community quarantine classifications that aims to manage and minimize the risk of the disease through system indicators, triggers and thresholds determined by the IATF.

We are starting to loosen the restrictions in our country so this is hoping that everyone will do their part by being vaccinated as well.

Note: In IATF’s Alert Level system, Alert Level 2 permits maximum of 50% indoor venue capacity for fully vaccinated individuals only. Those below 18 years of age, even if unvaccinated, may enjoy 70% outdoor venue capacity.

Why is Air Pollution getting worse in New Delhi, India?

0

We all know that air pollution is getting worse all over the world but in India it seems to be an annual thing where it gets worse in the winter months.

The extreme level of air pollution in Delhi, India that can be clearly seen through its thick smog has been present since the festival of Diwali last November 4.

The Atmospheric levels of PM2.5 which are fine particles that can be inhaled and clog people’s lungs are currently so high its way above World Health Organization’s (WHO) safety guidelines.

They recorded a consistent above 300 micrograms per cubic metre and other parts of the city are close to or higher than 400 micrograms and it is now considered a “severe” case.

WHO air quality index (AQI):

  • 0-50 Good
  • 51-100 Satisfactory

Imagine a human hair is already at 50-70 μm diameter, how much smaller are these particles with just 2.5 μm diameter or less floating in the air.

Photo from Google

Various factors viewed as cause to the Air Pollution

  • Seasonal Burning of farm stubble which are residue from rice and other crops to make way for growing wheat even though the practice was already banned.
  • Factory emissions throughout different neighboring states
  • Traffic fumes caused by vehicle traffic that increases during Diwali as people are going out and buying gifts or visiting family and friends
  • General weather during winter with low wind speed, pollutants are trapped in the lower atmosphere.
  • Fireworks during the Diwali festival. Though not all fireworks produce a lot of PM2.5 particles, it still has hazardous and toxic substances.

Schools and colleges have been closed indefinitely and their government employees are ordered to work from home until 21 November due to the worsening smog.
