Theater Is Back! ‘Ang Huling El Bimbo’ Cast Returns to the Stage

“Buksan and Puso at Isipan, paliparin ang Kamalayan”

Yes. We can now again sing this iconic line at the top of our lungs as Newport Performing Arts Theater at Resorts Worlds Manila in Pasay welcomes theater-goers with “Ang Muling El Bimbo”: AHEB Homecoming Concert.

Photo from Full House Theater Company Facebook Page

Their first live concert after a long hiatus due to the pandemic will surely give us the feels again. And nothing beats a live performance more than any other.

Ang Huling El Bimbo is a musical featuring the songs of the most iconic 90’s band Eraserheads written by Dingdong Novenario. It gained quite the fame during the quarantine period as a recorded 2019 performance was streamed for free online on the official YouTube channel and Facebook page of ABS-CBN from May 8 to 9, 2020.

The songs, the acting, and the heart of that performance resonated to every Filipino watching and saved us somehow during the isolation.

A warm and touching story

It follows the story of three friends: Hector, Emman, and Anthony in a mini-reunion 20 years after their college graduation. A series of flashback scenes revealed their story one by one and all the challenges they faced to get where they are now. A story that unfolded through songs of Eraserheads that almost every Filipino if not all recognizes and memorized by heart.

The Homecoming Concert is set to be this December 10 at 8 pm with its cast Reb Atadero & Bibo Reyes (Hector Samala), Carla Guevara-Laforteza, Tanya Manalang & Gab Pangilinan (Joy Manawari), OJ Mariano & Vic Robinsons (Emman Azarcon), Phi Palmos (Anthony/AJ Cruz), and Sheila Francisco (Tiya Dely), with the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra.

Getting to know the 3 Spider-Men in the Spiderverse

Ever since the first Spiderman movie came out in 2002 starring Tobey Maguire, everyone predicted that the movie will be the first of many things. And indeed, it was, as fast forward to now, fans are treated to a third and MCU’s version of the webbed slinger, with trailers hinting that it will be culminating all universes from different Spiderman movies.

And while it is not yet confirmed, fans and critics alike are hopeful that Spiderman: No Way Home, will be featuring the three iconic Spidermen – each played by Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland – in one movie as part of the multiverse theory of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for its Phase 4.

But what do we know so far from the three portrayals? Here we break down each Spiderman franchise and what makes each different among the three.

Spiderman – Tobey Maguire

Every 90s kid surely recognize Tobey Maguire is the OG Spiderman. His portrayal of Spiderman was indeed a big part of our childhood and undoubtedly, the trilogy starred by Tobey paved the way on how comic book movies are being depicted.

Photo from bamsmackpow.com
Photo from techradar.com

In this version, Tobey Maguire is a regular college kid who got bitten by a radioactive spider and obtained powers, eventually becoming Spider-Man. The first movie in the tackles about Peter Parker taking responsibility with these new-found powers, especially after the loss of his beloved Uncle Ben. From there, Spider-Man goes on to struggle with his life as a college student, a pizza delivery man, a part-time photographer for the Daily Bugle, his personal relationships especially with MJ, and of course, being Spider-Man. The three films showed consistent character development (though not very much in the third one), coming Tobey’s take on the webbed slinger to a close.

Movies: Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3

Iconic Villains: Green Goblin played by Willem Dafoe, Doc Ock played by Alfred Molina, Venom played by Topher Grace, Sandman played by Thomas Haden Church, New Goblin played by James Franco

Spiderman – Andrew Garfield

The lesser-reviewed Spider-Man 3 eventually led to a reboot of the entire franchise itself, which then starred Andrew Garfield. In this version, Peter Parker is also a regular, orphaned college kid but his personal life is less tragic compared with Tobey’s as the two films focuses more on Spider-Man’s adventures. Peter’s parents’ death was also elaborated here compared with the previous franchise as well as on how he ends up under her Aunt May’s care. In this franchise too, Peter Parker has a different love interest in the name of Gwen Stacy although Harry Osborn is also rebooted, Dane DeHaan’s portrayal seem to be less toned down compared with James Franco’s.

Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man is the only franchise with only two movies, where it was noted in 2014 where Sony Pictures got hacked and low reviews of the second film led to its eventual cancellation

Movies: The Amazing Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Iconic Villains: Lizard played by Rhys Ifans, Electro played by Jamie Foxx, Green Goblin played by Dane Dehaan, Rhino played by Paul Giamatti

Spiderman – Tom Holland

In an effort to introduce the friendly neighbor, Spider-Man, in the MCU, Tom Holland’s introduction in Captain America: Civil War back in 2016 as the new Spider-Man drove fans into a craze. Spider-Man is an iconic member of the Avengers, and it is only fitting that he be part of it too in the MCU. After settling the dispute with Marvel and Sony, Spiderman:Homecoming was released in 2017 which led to another reboot of the character.

Photo from polygon.com

In this iteration, Tom Holland plays a much younger version of Spider-Man, and his character is livelier and more comfortable. Thanks to the ongoing tone of humor in most MCU movies, Spider-Man by Tom Holland also got the same treatment, with the version having the least tragic stories among the three franchises. Aunt May is also present in this universe, but a much younger one, which was reasonable if she was indeed the aunt, which differed from the generic ‘grandmother’ trope of the Aunt May as based in the comics. His love interest here is also MJ and like most characters in this universe, a much bubblier one.

Overall, Tom Holland’s version of this Spider-Man focuses more on his identity both as Peter Parker and Spider-Man; his troubles being a teenager launched into the world of Avengers, his huge concern when it comes to his studies, and the iconic nuances that comes with being a young adult.

Movies: Spiderman: Homecoming, Spiderman: Far From Home, Spiderman: No Way Home

Iconic Villains: Vulture played by Michael Keaton, Mysterio played by Jake Gyllenhaal.

How about you? Which is your favorite Spider-Man version among the three?

Who is the 6th member of the Sinister 6 in Spiderman NWH? Fan Theories and Discussions

Now we are finally treated with the second trailer of probably the most awaited MCU film of 2021, diehard fans are still left with many questions regarding No Way Home’s multiverse madness. And one of the questions asked – who is the sixth member of the iconic Sinister Six?

From the latest No Way Home trailer, five villains so far have appeared – Doc Ock, Electro, Green Goblin, Sandman and Lizard. The common thing about these super villains, aside from the fact that all appeared in previous Spiderman villains (some outside the MCU) is that they are all members of the Sinister Six – a legion of villains with the goal of eliminating Spiderman at all costs.

In the comics, the roster of the infamous Sinister Six constantly changes, with iconic Spiderman villains taking place one after another. Four of the five mentioned villains are the founding members of the original Sinister Six (Lizard is not one of the founding members) But in the context of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we can only guess those who have made appearances so far or have made hints to appear in future MCU films.

  • Vulture – one of the most obvious choices would be Vulture, who first appeared in 2017’s Spiderman: Homecoming played by Michael Keaton. His last appearance from that film was from a post-credit scene, where he is already jailed and comes across an inmate who said that he, too, was wronged by Spiderman. Moreover, the inmate, who was assumed to be Scorpion from the comics, implores that if Vulture knew Spiderman, which he denied.
Photo from heroichollywood.com
  • Mysterio – unlike Vulture, Mysterio was a snitch who at by the end of the previous MCU Spiderman film, he revealed Spiderman’s identity as Peter Parker. This ultimately led to the plot of No Way Home’s overall plot come in motion, as obviously this has irked Peter so much that he asked Dr. Strange’s help. And even though the villain’s death was confirmed not an illusion, Mysterio, being the sixth member of the infamous group can be very likely too being him a charlatan with many tricks up his sleeve.
Photo from indiewire.com
  • Venom – Tom Hardy impressed us with his portrayal of Venom as an anti-hero, not necessarily a villain, in the Spiderman universe yet it is still very possible that he will be battling Spiderman himself in future films. In the latest Venom: Let There Be Carnage post-credit scene, we can finally see that Sony’s take in Venom finally collides with MCU’s Spiderman where in a brief moment, sees Spiderman exposed as Peter Parker highly interests the symbiote. It is also worth mentioning that the symbiote mentioned about ‘Hive’, where the possibility of other symbiotes in the multiverse could exist. In 2007’s Spiderman 3, Tobey Maguire’s Spiderman defeated the said symbiote so it is very likely that the Venom we see today could be taking action about that.
Photo from giantfreakinrobot.com
  • Scorpion – mentioning the post-credit scene in Spiderman: Homecoming, it was not explained how his character was ‘wronged’ by Spiderman but that only makes us guess that he wants to seek revenge against our friendly neighbor.
Photo from marvel-movies.fandom.com
  • Morbius – although not much yet known with Jared Leto’s upcoming take as Morbius, we already know for sure from the trailers that the film’s approach would be very like the same with Tom Hardy’s Venom; an origin story for another iconic anti-hero. Morbius, like in the comics, is a doctor with a rare blood disease which leads him to find a cure only to afflicted with a form of vampirism. Whether he would clash against Spiderman and ultimately become the sixth member, it’s for us to find out yet very soon.
Photo from indiewire.com
  • Rhino – among this list, this villain may be the least likely as this is the only character with the least screen time in any Spiderman films. Though his lack of screen time in the past films could mean that the iconic Rhino will be finally getting the big-screen treatment as part of the Sinister Six.
Photo from screenrant.com
  • Kraven the Hunter – although still in development, a standalone film about Kraven, the Hunter will soon be released in January 2023, with Aaron Taylor-Johnston confirmed to portray the character. Additionally, Jon Watts, the director of the first two MCU Spiderman movies mentioned that he wants to use Kraven or at least introduce the character in the upcoming No Way Home.   For those who don’t know, Kraven the Hunter is one of Spiderman’s iconic villains in the comics where he was this big-game hunter and wants to best Spiderman in order to prove himself as the world’s best hunter. He is also one of the founding members of the original Sinister Six.
Photo from mindlifetv.com

We can only conclude who will be the sixth member as soon as No Way Home hits the big screen, where it is set to be released in January 2023 in Philippine cinemas. Who do you think will be the sixth member of the Sinister Six?

World-renowned Cebuano Kenneth Cobonpue: Living His Own Legacy

0

Yoda. Bloom. Z Bar. Voyage Bed. Dragnet Longue Chair.

Cebuano industrial designer Kenneth Cobonpue has enthralled plenty of people—from Jordan’s queen to Hollywood’s royalty—by his notable creations.

But before sunshine and rainbows, he also experienced rejection when he did not pass the drawing exam for the Fine Arts program in University of the Philippines. This prompted him to take up drawing lessons and later applied at Pratt Institute in New York City. Eventually, he earned a diploma in Industrial Design and graduated summa cum laude. He was also an apprentice in leather and wood workshop near Florence, Italy. In the year 1994, Cobonpue studied furniture marketing and production at the Export Akademie Baden-Württemberg in Reutlingen, Germany under a scholarship program.

He finally went back to Cebu in 1996 to help manage his family’s furniture business founded by his mother, Betty in 1972. It was during the time of managing their business when he realized that modern design could have a new blend by using natural materials as a medium.

Cobonpue was hailed as rattan’s first virtuoso by TIME Magazine and was declared as the Designer of the Year in the first edition of Maison et Objet Asia on March 11, 2014 in Singapore. Not just that, he received multiple awards such as the Japan Good Design Awards, French Coup de Coeur award, Design for Asia Award of Hong Kong, and American Society of Interior Design Top Pick, among others.

“The priority group A1 may choose to receive the same brand as his/her primary series (homologous booster) or another brand (heterologous booster),” it added.

Starting November 17, the fully vaccinated healthcare workers are all eligible for the booster shots.

“Healthcare workers who have completed their primary series or six months after getting the second dose, can be inoculated with the following brands regardless of which vaccines taken in the first two doses,” says the guidelines.

Should you prefer a different brand of booster shot, please see chart below for the ‘mix and match’ of vaccines approved by DOH.

Here comes PISO DEALS month at Miniso

Ber months are here and you know the drill. BOGO aka the Buy One Take One, sales, and other promos are waving!

Malls and boutiques are bringing their a-game to get you into buying things that, well, you probably do not need—but you buy it anyway because why not?

Just recently, Miniso dropped their deals this month of November. One particular deal wowed both netizens and mallgoers: The Piso Deals

Photo from Miniso Philippines Facebook Page

To put it simply, you buy one on any selected items in its original price, and you get the other item for 1 peso. This deal is only applicable on selected Miniso items and it will end on November 30, 2021.

If you hate the hassle of going around the mall jam-packed with people, it is best to come early. There is a high chance that you might not end up buying the thing you really want especially when it is already sold out. That is certainly not an excuse to be rude and throw an attitude to the sales attendants, right?
