With tons of Broadway musicals coming to the Philippines this 2024, businesses are also opening their spaces for thespians and musical lovers alike. And one of those places is Handuraw Pizza!

Recently, they’ve held their HISTOREMIX Singalong 2024 wherein guests enjoyed an all-night jamming session to songs from Les Mis, Miss Saigon, Hamilton, SIX, and other musical plays shown on Broadway.

The pizza parlor partnered up with Broadway Youth Cebu in their event, making it a strong summoning for thespians around Cebu from different theater groups such as from 2TinCans, Siddhartha, and Vaudeville. And in the coming months, they already laid out a calendar filled with musical theater singalongs which are the following:

1. Heroes & Villains

Ever wanted to sing as Ursula or maybe as Jafar? Well, it’s your time to pick up the mic and step on-stage this coming July 20, 2024 at 6PM for the Heroes & Villains Night! Songs you can expect include Poor Unfortunate Souls from The Little Mermaid, Friends From The Other Side from The Princess & The Frog, Evil Like Me from The Descendants, and many more. And of course, a villain’s presence will not be complete without the hero, so there will also be songs from Disney and musical protagonists in line.

2. Jamilton Cebu 2024

A word play between the phrase “Jamming to Hamilton,” Jamilton Cebu 2024 is an event for Hamilton fans to sing and dance to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s compositions. With songs from My Shot to Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story will be open for reservations and first dibs until the night of the event on November 9, 2024 at 6PM.

3. Wicked Jam

If you’re a Defying-Gravity-girly or you love hitting the notes on No Good Deed, then the Wicked Jam is for you this coming November 26, 2024 at 7PM. Songs such as As Long As You’re Mine, A Sentimental Man, and other Wicked The Musical songs will be played during the jamming session.

Aside from those three, it was also announced last May 1, 2024 that there may be a SIX: The Musical karaoke night a week before the Broadway sensation will have their shows in the country. Salute to all call center agents, virtual assistants, guards, and all employees working on graveyard shifts!

Graveyard shifts can be challenging. You really have to compose yourself to survive. Whether you are a seasoned night owl or new to the nocturnal life, thriving during those late-night hours is not a piece of cake.

Reflecting on my college days, I recall a classmate who was the epitome of perseverance. Despite our demanding class schedule, he juggled his academic responsibilities with a graveyard shift job, relying on it as his primary means of financing his education. Fast forward three years later, as I took the role of a customer service representative, I couldn’t help but be in awe at his ability to maintain a fresh demeanor while excelling in both work and academics.

Recently reconnecting with him after years apart, I asked the secret behind his seemingly boundless energy and unwavering commitment; and here’s some of his tips:

Adjust your body clock.

Scientifically, our bodies are naturally programmed to be awake and active during the day and asleep at night. To be able to adjust your natural body clock, expose yourself to bright light during your waking hours and minimize light exposure when it is bedtime.

Balance your diet.

Food serves as our fuel. Having a balanced diet is important for sustaining energy levels throughout your shift. Eat nutritious meals and snacks that provide a steady release of energy to fuel your body. Avoid heavy, greasy foods that can leave you feeling sluggish.

Stay hydrated.

Water plays an essential role in our bodies. The lack of drinking water can exacerbate feelings of fatigue, so be sure to drink plenty of water throughout your shift. Limit your caffeine and sugary beverages intake as these can be factors affecting your sleep quality. Or, if you can’t avoid caffeine all together, then make sure to drink it at the start of your shift and avoid it when you’re taking your second break especially since break time’s usually near the end of your shift.

Prioritize sleeping after your shift.

Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule is crucial when working the graveyard shift. Aim to have 7-9 hours of sleep per day, even if it means being asleep during the day. To help you prioritize sleep, build a cozy environment and invest in blackout curtains. But, if you’re living with folks who sleep during normal hours, then you will have to also adapt and you can do that by using a sleep mask to cover your eyes and blackout your sight.

Seek for moral support.

As mentioned, graveyard shift is challenging to handle. It is natural for us to struggle in coping up with its demands, as I did for the first 2 years working as an agent. Do not hesitate to seek support from the people around you such as your co-workers. If you need stronger support, approach healthcare professionals. It is important for you to prioritize your well-being.

Keep in mind that your mental health should be your top priority. The tips mentioned above empower your well-being. With the right mindset and strategies in place, you can make the most of your nocturnal adventures and embrace the unique opportunities that working through the night has to offer. Ever wanted to pursue a Masters or Doctors degree in space science? Then the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) got you covered!

Earlier this year, the PhilSA organization announced that they are officially accepting applications for the 2024 batch of scholars for the Advanced Degrees for Accelerating Strategic Space R&D and Applications (AD ASTRA) Scholarships Program.

The program offers ranging from full, partial, and sandwich program scholarships and is open for all individuals who are interested in gaining higher educational degrees after acquiring a Bachelor’s degree in the related fields of Space Science, Technology, and Applications (SSTA).

What Fields Are Prioritized By The PhilSA?

There are five specific fields of Science that PhilSA is focused on and will be prioritizing with regards to their scholarship grants, and these are the following:

Scholarship Program Eligibility

Unlike other scholarship programs that are limited to youngsters, PhilSA opens their doors to any individual no more than 50 years old, for as long as you meet the following criteria:

Must not be more than 45 years old at the time of application for Masters and Doctorate Scholarships, and not more than 50 years old for stand-alone sandwich programs.
Must be a Filipino citizen and in good health.
Must be of good moral character, as attested by two (2) character references.
Must have a relevant Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree.
Must have no pending administrative/criminal case.
Must have no pending service obligation from any previous scholarship programs unless there is a clearance or consent from the previous granting institution allowing the postponement of return service obligation and indicating that monitoring of the previous service obligation will not be transferred to PhilSA.
Must have a research/thesis/dissertation plan in line with the Key Development Areas of PhilSA.
Must have passed the admission requirements of any CHED-recognized Higher Educational Institution (HEI) (for local scholarship applicants).
Must have passed the internal scholarship process of his/her Department/Agency (for government employees).
Must have been accepted to their host institution.

What Can A PhilSA Scholar Get?

Being a PhilSA AD ASTRA scholar is filled with benefits, from a full coverage of the tuition fees to the monthly stipend of up to ₱36,000.00. There is also the book allowance of up to ₱22,000.00 per year and even a ₱50,000.00 technological support for your laptop and internet!
