Millions of tourists visit Cebu each year. The island of Cebu has become a premier destination whether it be for work, study, travel. But there’s a certain time of the year that everyone is excited about, when people from around the world and from across the country gather together with the Cebuanos to celebrate a certain festivity – the Sinulog.
Here are some facts you need to know about Cebu’s Sinulog.
When is Sinulog celebrated?
Held every third Sunday of the January, the Sinulog Festival is one of the most famous festivals in the Philippines. (For this year, it is celebrated on January 20, 2019.) It is attended, not only by Filipinos, but people coming from different parts of the globe also came to witness the celebration.
From the colorful costumes, to the distinctly beautiful dances and to the music of the drums and trumpets, the Sinulog Festival is unchallenged in its grandness and thus earned its name – the “The Mother of All Festivals”.
Why do we celebrate Sinulog?
The Sinulog Festival is a celebration in honor of Santo Niño (Child Jesus). The festival is done by a dance ritual, in which it tells the story of the Filipino people The word “Sinulog” means a graceful dance– a rhythmic and beautiful forward and backward motion that represents the “sulog” (or current).
The Sinulog Festival has been going around for almost four centuries now. Its rich history dates back to old and truly reflects the humble beginnings of Cebu and the birth and growth of Christianity in Cebu and the Philippines.
How long is it celebrated? What are the activities?
The Sinulog Festival fever goes on just after New Year’s celebration and has become a month long tradition in Cebu. The most-awaited event is the Sinulog Grand Parade which is in the culmination of the Festivity. Among the many other activities during the festivity are contests, as art exhibits, beauty pageants, photo contests, and singing and dancing contests. The street celebration is also something to look forward to. Participants may also join the festival’s activities, such as concerts, cultural shows, fireworks display, fun runs, and street fairs.
What’s really the history of Sinulog? Why in Cebu?
Historical accounts say that before Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan came to Cebu on April 7, 1521 to plant the cross on its shore and claim the country for the King of Spain, Sinulog was already danced by the natives in honor of their wooden idols and anitos. Then Magellan came and introduced Christianity. He gave the Santo Nino (image of the Child Jesus) as baptismal gift to Hara Amihan, wife of Cebu’s Rajah Humabon who was later named Queen Juana. At that time, not only the rulers were baptized but also about 800 of their subjects. Unfortunately, however, shortly after the conversion, Magellan went into a reckless adventure by fighting the reigning ruler of Mactan, Rajah Lapulapu, with only a handful of men. He died in the encounter. That was on April 27, 1521.
The remnants of Magellan’s men were however able to return to Spain to report the incident and the possibility of conquest. It took 44 years before a new group came and started the formal Christianization of the islands. Miguel Lopez de Legaspi arrived in Cebu on April 28, 1565. His ships bombarded the village and in one of the burning huts, one of his soldiers named Juan Camus found inside a wooden box the image of the Santo Nino lying side by side with native idols.
Historians now say that during the 44 years between the coming of Magellan and Legaspi, the natives continued to dance the Sinulog. This time however, they danced it no longer to worship their native idols but a sign of reverence to the Santo Nino which is now enshrined at the San Agustin Church ( renamed Basilica Minore del Santo Nino). Of course, through the years since 1521, the dance was a small ritual danced by a few in front of wooden idols or before the Santo Nino. In fact, at the Santo Nino Church where the image is consecrated, only the candle vendors could be seen dancing the Sinulog and making offerings. During the Santo Nino fiesta which falls on the third Sunday of January, children dressed moro-moro costumes also dance the Sinulog. This was really no big event for Cebu City.
The Sinulog Festival reflects how rich the history of Cebu is, how lively and kind its people are and how blessed in many aspects it is. The festivity became a way of sharing the Cebuano culture to the world.
One of the first things usually written in the bucket list of every millennial is “adventure”. I mean, who doesn’t love to go on an adventure? To travel and just be fearless to try every outdoor activity invented in the world, it’s really something that also satisfies our being. Cebu is not only rich in hospitable people, wonders of nature and beautiful tourist spots, but it can also offer you an experience that can make you shout your lungs out or even lose your soul for a little while.
The Sugbo Ambassadors recently experienced Cebu in a whole new different view, at the newly renovated Danasan Eco Adventure Park in Danao City, Cebu. If you’re hungry for an adventure that can make you utter the words “Kuya, tama na, taas na kayo” [Hey, stop. It’s too high already!] and “Di ni nako kaya hadlok kaayo” [I can’t take it any longer, I’m too scared.] and yet still end up trying every single adventure ride. This is it. Leaving you with shaky knees, cold hands and feet, and a racing heart, it is an escape you surely want to try. Experience Danasan Eco Adventure Park and thank us later.
Here are the things you can start checking in your adventure bucket-list:
✔ ATV
Don’t underestimate the ATVs. You got to make sure you have your strength and are ready to try the bumpiest road you will ever experience. Don’t enjoy the scenic view too much because you might forget to turn, and it would all be too late. It’s a 2-kilometer ride that goes on the inner part of the park compound and up beyond the hilly sides for 30 minutes.
✔ SPEEDWAY
Go-Kart, but unlike other go-karts, you can enjoy a longer trail. Your speed, your way. Just make sure you drive responsibly for your own safety. It has a 700-meter curve trail with 3 laps to bit.
✔ ZIPLINE AND HORSEBACK RIDING
Ziplining never gets old, and will always be a “classic” in any adventure park. The zipline is 440-meter long; but it’s not really just about the ride. You also get to witness Danasan’s beautiful, lush green mountain view.
On the other side, a horse awaits to take you back. Since the zipline is only one-way, either you walk back to the tophill or experience the real horseback riding. For extremists, you can ask the guide to make the horses run!
✔ SKY BIKE
Another tingling experience you must try is the Sky Bike. It is a machine-operated ride in the air where you can enjoy and at the same time fear for what might happen to you given by your imagination – kidding! You can just put your hands in the air and feel the cold breeze. Still doesn’t excite you?
Here’s the twist. Once you have reached to the other side, the only way back is to pedal and pedal and pedal. It’s not machine-operated anymore! Pretty sure your knees would shake and the strong wind would make it worse. More fun, rather.
✔ SKY DROP – NEW!
This is definitely the most exciting ride ever. Why? Imagine you are 120-feet high above the ground with only a harness and three-cables to support you. The slower you reach the top all the while enjoying the meadow of green fields and wave of clouds above, the faster the drop. Remember law of gravity?
But before falling from the heavens, you will be suspended in mid-air 120-feet above the ground as you forcefully pull the rope (release) and sentence your life to a soul-losing ride. Just a tip, if you try this at night, you will get to see the city lights of Negros.
✔ KAYAKING AND FISH FEEDING
Surprisingly, this is one of our favorites. It’s somehow a breath of fresh air from all the extreme rides. Just paddling from one point to another in a calm lake, with the sun about to set, it will definitely give you chills and an amazing kind of relaxation. Very ideal for romantic dates, too. It would seem like a movie scene.
✔ DANASAN WATERFALLS
Going to the waterfalls is no joke. You will need to go through a super bumpy ride on a truck for about 30 minutes. I’m not exaggerating, it’s just how we experienced it. Then another 10-15-minute hike with the whole trail being too slippery. But trust me, it’s all worth it once you’ve reached to Danasan Waterfalls. You will also experience the three-level waterfalls where you can do Tyrolean and Rappelling.
Unfortunately, due to the bad weather, we were not able to experience some of the rides. There are just SO MANY to experience. But we will surely go back and try everything.
TWIN TOWER (WALL CLIMBING 60-120-FT, HIGH CABLE TRAVERSE, 60ft RAPPEL)
✔ ROPE COURSE
✔ WAKE BOARDING
✔ CAVING AND TREKKING
✔ TYROLEAN AND RAPELLING
✔ INFINITY POOL
✔ KAWA BATH – NEW!
After an adventure-filled day at Danasan Eco Adventure Park, relax and experience the indescribable thrill of being “cooked” with the Kawa Bath.

Wondering what’s in the northernmost tip of Cebu? Welcome to Carnaza Island, an island paradise located off the northern coast of Cebu, in the middle of the Visayan Sea — it is part of Daanbantayan, Cebu.
The face of this island has been a mystery to many people even those who live in the municipality where it is situated. It’s distance and accessibility are among the factors why there’s not much tourism in the area. That’s why most people prefer Malapascua Island in their itineraries. And majority of its land area is privately owned by Cebu’s former Governor, Lito Osmeña.
Nevertheless, the island is perfect for backpackers and those who are on a budget. Expenses aren’t too high as compared in Malapascua. Visiting the island only requires you to pray for a perfect weather or else you’ll be compelled to postpone next #TravelGoals.
