Get to know Linda Yaccarino, Twitter’s new CEO alongside Elon Musk

Has the founder of Tesla and SpaceX Elon Musk finally found someone “foolish enough to take the job”?

Over six months after Elon Musk’s controversial takeover of Twitter, the American business magnate introduced NBCUniversal advertising executive Linda Yaccarino as the new CEO of the platform a few days ago on May 12, 2023.

Photo from Linda Yaccarino

In the same tweet Musk made the revelation, he remarked that Yaccarino’s job as CEO is to manage the business operations of the application, whilst he is responsible for the social media’s technology and product design.

But who really is Linda Yaccarino, and what could have made Musk make this decision?

Let’s step back for a moment – why exactly is Musk hiring a CEO?

After facing a lot of backlash from users who were not liking the way he was running things, Musk proceeded to post a poll on Twitter on December 18 last year 2022, to which over 17.5 million people responded.

Musk’s survey asked if he should step down as head of Twitter, with the promise that he would abide by the results. The majority of respondents demanded that Musk indeed resign because of his apparent crazy leadership style. Two days later, Musk announced that he would do so “as soon as I find someone foolish enough to take the job! After that, I will just run the software and servers teams.”

For quite some time, Musk didn’t seem to be taking the prospect seriously.

Linda Yaccarino and her deal

Media executive Linda Yaccarino is well-known and has held a number of prominent positions in the sector. She has long been in charge of managing client relationships and advertising sales for businesses’ full media platform portfolios, including social media, digital, and television.

She is well-known in the business for her leadership, innovation, and contributions to the media landscape thanks to her illustrious career in media and advertising.

Photo from Linda Yaccarino

In terms of her relationship with Musk, prior to his acquisition of Twitter, Yaccarino had not interacted with him in public very often, although she has been a supporter of the Twitter 2.0 era. She did, however, hold a keynote talk with Musk at a marketing association event in Miami, agreeing that “this freedom of speech deserves a bit more reach.”

The day before it took place, Yaccarino praised Musk’s interview with Bill Maher about the “woke mind virus,” liked a number of Musk tweets about topics like the highly anticipated X app, and seemed encouraged by Twitter’s announcement that it would provide “more transparency to the enforcement actions we take on Tweets.”

Will Yaccarino be a good captain of a sinking ship?

Twitter has greatly plummeted over the past few months. Followed by hundreds of employees quitting less than a week before he took over, advertisers also backed out from using the platform because of the changes that have been implemented by Musk.

To many, Twitter is a drowning corporation – but will Yaccarino save it from its demise?

It is too early to tell, but making advertisers, who previously accounted for approximately 90% of Twitter’s revenue, feel enthusiastic about the firm again is the company’s immediate task and it would be quite challenging to find someone better than Yaccarino on this front, considering her professional background.

Photo from Forbes

The decision to make Linda Yaccarino in charge of Twitter as its new CEO was arguably a risky one, and the organization should be moving in a new path under her management.

Although she has a good record in the media and advertising sectors, it is still unclear if she will be able to lead and transform Twitter. A new set of talents, including knowledge of technology, product development, and social media platforms, would be needed for the position.

It is also important to keep in mind that choosing a CEO is a difficult process that takes into account a variety of elements, such as the objectives, culture, and strategic priorities of the company as a whole.

We can only wait and see if Yaccarino succeeds in reviving Twitter and returning it to its former glory, but let us hold out hope that she will.

e-Visa System in the Philippines in the works— DICT

DICT once again embraces another electronic service.

The Philippines has come a long way in terms of electronic services. The country now has electronic systems such as e-wallets, e-banks, and e-driver’s licenses. Registrations for government requirements are even done online. Now, DICT announced that they are looking to deploy an e-visa system.

Photo from Unsplash

During a press conference in Malacañang, a question was raised about the slow processing of tourist visas in the Philippine consular worldwide. DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy responded as he announced that DICT is working with multiple agencies to deploy an e-visa system. However, there are no further details about the plans.

Uy also said there is already Free WiFi in 36 target tourism locations out of 94. This will allow tourists and travelers to stay connected to the internet.

Could the e-Visa be the solution for the slow processing of tourist visas? We can soon find out once it has been established.

The Trending Mangoong in Cebu

Unripe Mangoes + Bagoong (shrimp paste) = a match made in heaven!

Filipinos love pairing something sour with something salty, sweet, or both, and one of them is pairing unripe mangoes with shrimp paste or bagoong. Sour and salty or even sweet battling their place on our tastebuds is such a delight.

Photo from JandM Main Branch Facebook Page

Just this month, a stall in Cebu went viral for selling Mangoong, JandM Main Branch. They place mango slices inside a jar, mix in a thick ladleful of bagoong, and shake it around to coat each mango slice evenly with the paste. Then, the Mangoong is placed inside a tub or a cup and even slathered generously with another scoop of bagoong.

The shop has different types of bagoong, and they even serve fruit platters with shrimp paste on the side. You can even choose to have santol, unripe papaya, pomelo, and more, instead of just mangoes.

The stall has three locations. There is one in Banawa, in Opon Mercado, and Tabok Mandaue.

Just writing about this is making me crave, brb! Getting myself a Mangoong.

What is Intermittent Fasting? Is it worth trying? Let’s find out

Weight loss isn’t easy, but it isn’t impossible.

There are many ways for a person to lose weight, but let’s face it, not all of it is safe. As a result, people have become skeptical of trending diet and weight loss plans, one of which is intermittent fasting (IF).

Photo from Unsplash

Many people have been saying that intermittent fasting worked for them, but most didn’t explain what IF is and how to do it. So in this write-up, we’re going to talk about precisely that.

Intermittent fasting explained

Intermittent fasting is a kind of weight loss plan that is about “when” to eat. From the name itself, you fast and eat at a specific time or eat meals on specific days in a week. With intermittent fasting, the body drains all the sugar the body stores and burns fat instead.  This is because the fasting part allows our body to go without food for hours.

There are different types of intermittent fasting; 16/8 fasting, 5:2 approach, and 72-hour fasting periods.

Photo from Unsplash

The 16/8 stands for 16 hours of fasting and an 8-hour eating window. Let’s say you start eating at 10 AM and end at 6 PM. From 10 AM to 6 PM, that’s your eating window. Once it goes beyond 6 PM, that’s when your fasting starts. 6 PM to 10 AM completes the 16-hour fasting. This method of IF is done daily.

Next, we have the 5:2 approach. You eat regularly for five days in a week, and for the other two days, you eat only one 500-600 calorie meal.

The 72-hour fasting is not advised since it can be dangerous. In addition, going too long without food will force your body to store more fat than burn it.

What to eat while doing IF?

Some people think that because they are doing intermittent fasting, they can gobble up tons of food; if you eat junk foods on your eating window, it’s not really going to make you lose weight. Eating nutritious food is still the best option.

Photo from Unsplash

You can drink water, black coffee, and tea during your fasting hours.

Pros and Cons of Intermittent Fasting

Like other weight loss methods, it’s important to consider the Pros and Cons of IF.

Pros:

  • Aids in Memory
  • Heart Health
  • Physical Performance
  • Helps with Type 2 diabetes and obesity
Photo from Unsplash

Cons:

  • Hunger and fatigue (especially for first-timers).
  • It may cause unhealthy relationships with food
  • It is not advisable for people on medication.

Now that you know about intermittent fasting, it’s still a good idea to consult a nutritionist before jumping in on it. Like other dieting methods, IF may or may not work for you.

Tick Season is here! Here are different ways to prevent them

Tis’ the season to be jolly? More like, Tick the season to be worried.

With the summer season comes tick season, and it can pretty much put you and your pet in an itchy situation, literally. Of course, some shampoos or soaps can help eliminate and prevent ticks, but there are also inexpensive and alternative ways to do so. So let’s take a look at them.

Photo from Unsplash

Humans vs. Ticks

Bring out some lemon, orange, and cinnamon. And no, you’re not making lemonade or a citrus drink. Believe it or not, ticks hate the smell of the abovementioned items. If you combine these ingredients, you can make a spray that repels ticks.

Aside from that, you can also use any carrier oil such as Witch Hazel, almond oil, or lotion. Geranium oil, Eucalyptus oil, peppermint, thyme, and lavender are also great for killing ticks.

Here’s how to make your own anti-tick spray for humans:

  • 1 oz carrier oil (witch hazel, almond oil, or lotion)
  • 7 drops Geranium
  • 4 drops peppermint
  • 4 drops Thyme
  • 4 drops Cedarwood or Lavender

It’s important to note that Eucalyptus is toxic for dogs and cats, which is why there’s an alternative for them as well.

Photo from Unsplash

Pet-friendly DIY Anti-tick Spray

DIY anti-tick spays are fairly easy. You only need to mix one part vinegar and one part water. Then, spray the solution directly on your pets, but avoid the eyes.

Here’s another DIY Spray recipe you can try.

  • Steep thinly sliced lemon in water overnight
  • Pour lemon water into a spray bottle
  • Add 10 drops each of lemongrass oil and Citronella oil
  • Add 1 cup of vinegar
  • Add Cedarwood oil (if you have any)

Protect yourself and your pets from nasty ticks, and make a DIY anti-tick spay. These recipes are all-natural, and you can even find some of the ingredients in the comfort of your own kitchen.

The Suzuki Non-manual S-Presso is Finally in PH, and You Won’t Believe how much it costs

The new non-manual Suzuki S-Presso is revving its engines in the Philippines.

Suzuki Philippines announced the model’s arrival, and it’s something car lovers should be excited about. The new Suzuki S-Presso AGS (Auto Gear Shift) variant has an automated manual transmission.

Photo from Suzuki

The AGS still functions as a manual gearbox; the only difference is that instead of a shifter, it has electro-hydraulic actuators.

What does the Suzuki S-Presso have to offer, and How Much does it cost?

Like the 2020 Suzuki S-Presso, the new model has a 1.0-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine. The engine generates 66hp at 5,500rpm and 89Nm of torque at 3,500rpm.

Aside from that, it also has the engine auto stop-start system (EASS). The EASS is responsible for turning off the engine when the car is at a stop. It then automatically starts when the driver steps on the accelerator.

The S-Presso has a small touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. In addition, it also has rear parking sensors and a hill-start assist.

And now, the million-dollar question, how much does it actually cost? The new S-Presso AGS is sold for ₱660,000.

Enter the McDonald’s multiverse with these branches

1

Everyone has a McDonald’s story – which branch held yours?

McDonald’s has held a lot of memories. Being a convenient dining option, many have the fast-food chain as their go-to for when they need a quick and cheap bite.

In 1981, McDonald’s built its first restaurant in the Philippines, where it has since integrated itself into the national identity and way of life. By providing menu items like the “McSpaghetti” and the “McDo” (short for McDonald’s) fries, which are highly well-liked by Filipinos, the company has been able to appeal to the Filipino public’s taste.

The oldest McDonald’s in the world in California, United States

Identifiable by its iconic golden arches, red and yellow color scheme, wide windows, drive-thru lanes, and play areas that are prominent throughout its many locations, McDonald’s has developed an established and identifiable brand identity, making it one of the leading chains in the world.

Although McDonald’s outlets all around the world share a common visual identity, certain countries have modified the brand’s look to incorporate distinctive architectural and cultural elements, making it more personal and connected with the people that surround it.

Here are a few examples of how McDonald’s architecture varies by nation. Let us dig in!

1. A Mcdonald’s in comfy knitwear in Ustron, Poland

First on our list is a branch that takes a “welcoming atmosphere” to a whole new level.

Sure, the familiarity of the bistro will always make it welcoming, but there is a McDonald’s in Poland that stands out better than the others thanks to its design that incorporates knitwear!

The cozied-up McDonald’s branch that is located in Ustron, a city in southern Poland took roughly 5 months and 50 staff to pull off the stunt (or put on the cardigan?), which was done to advertise the restaurant’s new winter menu. Talk about extreme advertising!

Huge braided strings of wool wrap the entire structure with a few enormous buttons. The building underwent a knitwear-inspired renovation that extends beyond the building’s exterior and includes the inside of the establishment as well.

Tempting to sleep in, am I right?

2. Porto, Portugal’s sophisticated McDonald’s in Art Deco

Who said a fast-food chain cannot be fancy?

A McDonald’s restaurant in Portugal has become notable for its opulent and stylish decor. Customers have dubbed this particular McDonald’s restaurant “The World’s Most Beautiful McDonald’s” located in the center of Porto, a historic city on Portugal’s northern coast.

The restaurant is housed in a remodeled building where Cafe Imperial – a well-known coffee shop that operated in the city since the 1930s – once stood. When McDonald’s took over the building, it kept the majority of the key architectural details because the coffee shop was regarded as a prime example of Art Deco design at the time.

High ceilings, elaborate moldings, and marble flooring give the restaurant a sense of grandeur and elegance that is not normally found in fast-food establishments.

The euros in your pocket might be intimidated by the grandiosity, but the prices are still consistent with your average McDonald’s.

3. The oldest McDonald’s in the world in California, United States

Travel back in time to the 1950s with the branch that has seen the most!

The 1953 opening of the first McDonald’s location in California is a historical landmark. This McDonald’s restaurant, which is a symbol of the power and longstanding reputation of the firm, is situated in Downey, a city in Los Angeles.

First created in the traditional Googie style, which gained popularity in the 1950s and 1960s and included futuristic and space-age features, the unique red and white tile roof, neon signs, and the iconic golden arches of the structure are all distinguishing features of the Googie design and have come to represent the McDonald’s brand.

In addition to its historical significance, the McDonald’s in Downey has a small museum that displays the company’s history and artifacts, such as old menus, packaging, and ads. Visitors can discover information on the establishment of the business, its development over time, and its effects on culture and society.

Honorable Mention: The Ancestral-esque McDonald’s in Vigan, Ilocos Sur

An exceptional example of how the fast-food restaurant corporation has incorporated local architecture and culture into its restaurant design is at the McDonald’s in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.

The McDonald’s establishment in Vigan has a facade that resembles the classic Spanish buildings in the neighborhood. Vigan is recognized for its well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture. The building has a very Spanish appearance thanks to its subdued yellow exterior paint and ornamental ironwork accents.

The Vigan McDonald’s location’s design, which incorporates regional characteristics, demonstrates how McDonald’s can blend in with the community while preserving its brand identity and menu options.

At its foundation, the McDonald’s brand contains a rich history and stories that make dining at any McDonald’s location a one-of-a-kind experience. McDonald’s has adapted and incorporated numerous parts of local cultures and preferences to its restaurants.

McDonald’s has evolved from its humble beginnings in San Bernardino to its global spread to become a cultural symbol and an integral part of many people’s lives.

McDonald’s has established an enduring legacy that cuts beyond boundaries and cultures, whether it’s the nostalgic sensation of visiting the oldest McDonald’s location in California or enjoying the opulent branch in Portugal.
