The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) confirmed on Monday that the Philippine government officials met with Elon Musk’s SpaceX last November 16, 2021 to discuss Starlink’s possible expansion to the country.
The meeting intended to discuss “Starlink’s plan to establish a Philippine-registered business that will be a wholly-owned subsidiary of SpaceX Exploration Technologies Corp.”

SpaceX is said to be planning to deliver satellite internet services and broadband connectivity to remote areas in the Philippines that are typically inaccessible to traditional internet service providers.
“With the entry of Starlink into the Philippines, high-speed satellite broadband connectivity is expected to be delivered to customers nationwide, specifically in areas where connectivity has been a challenge,” Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
Ceferino Rodolfo, Trade Undersecretary and Managing Head of the Board of Investment (BOI), said that following the ratification of the Public Services Act (PSA), which eases restrictions on foreign ownership of satellite internet services in the country, a series of follow-up online meetings were held since December.
WHAT IS STARLINK?
Starlink is a SpaceX subsidiary that uses low-orbit satellite technology to deliver an internet connection to the Earth. In May 2019, Starlink deployed 60 operational satellites. The company was launching up to 60 satellites at a time since then, and as of February 4, 2021, it launched a total of 1,085 satellites. Its goal is to deploy 1,440 satellites to provide near-global service by late 2021 or 2022.

HOW MUCH DOES THE SERVICE COST IN THE PHILIPPINES?
As of writing, Starlink costs USD 99 (or PHP 5,000) per month. The hardware costs USD 499 (PHP 25,000) as a one-time fee, then shipping and handling of USD 50 (PHP 2,500), plus taxes. Orders will be fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis and could take 2-4 weeks or more, depending on where you are in the ordering queue.

According to a study released by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), a bad internet connection is a pressing problem in the country alongside poverty and corruption. And with COVID-19, a meaningful internet connection is now a prerequisite to being “productive.” The absence of a meaningful internet connection, especially in unserved and underserved communities, means many workers, learners, and citizens will be excluded and left behind.
Well, it seems like more and more countries are accepting a mass number of immigrant Filipinos all over the world.
The latest which is Taiwan having recently passed a law allowing migrant workers to become permanent residents.
Photo from Unsplash
This action is prompted by a shortage of skilled workers there.
When this is implemented, there will be about 35,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFW’s) in Taiwan that can be eligible to become permanent residents of the island based on an official.
The new law is set to be implemented in April as said by Philippine labor attaché in Taiwan Cesar Chavez. He says there are still no full detailed guidelines yet but initial guidelines to apply for permanent residency states that:
A migrant worker who has worked 6 years in Taiwan can apply to be reclassified as an intermediate skilled worker
Once reclassified, the worker needs to serve for another 5 years to be able to apply for the residency
Calculating those two, it will take the entire process up to 11 years.
Taipei, Taiwan | Photo from Unsplash
Now there are at least 142,000 Filipinos employed in Taiwan, and around 35,000 have been working for more than 6 years.
These 35,000 OFWs are the ones eligible for reclassification and take note that their employers will be the ones who will apply for the reclassification of their workers.
Eight-five percent of OFWs in Taiwan work in the manufacturing industry while the remaining are mostly domestic workers, according to Chavez, noting that most workers usually stay for about 12 to 14 years.

Workers’ salary conditions
Manufacturing workers – not less than 33,000 NT
Domestic & caregivers (long term care homes) – not less than 29,000 NT
Caretaker at domestic worker caregivers (live-in) – not less than 24,000 NT

Summary of requirements
To sum it up you need to have the number of years working in Taiwan, have the salary condition met and also have a proficiency in the Chinese language to be able to apply for permanent residency. Aside from those, prepare all your professional skills training certificates from government-approved training courses as they are also required.
Though it’s a long process, once a worker has been granted permanent residency, they will be able to bring their families to the island so it’s definitely worth the wait.
This is probably your sign to start your own coffee shop.
This 25-year-old full-time employee quit her job and is now the owner of a coffee shop business with 15 branches nationwide.
Photo from Anna Herman Magalona
Anna Herman Magalona was worried about losing her job just like many others due to the pandemic so she was thinking of some other side hustle. She then decided to open a coffee shop and tried to juggle her job and business before actually quitting her job.
Photo from Anna Herman Magalona
Her coffee shop named “But First, Coffee” opened in August 2020 at her own rented condominium. Her business was a success and quickly expanded and she was able to quit her job on her 4th branch to focus on her growing business.
Out of 15 branches all over the country, Anna owns three of them. Her secret? Determination and good marketing strategies. What’s even more impressive is she achieved all these in just a year.
Though she hoped to be successful, she didn’t expect it to be that fast too.
With a starting capital of P6,000 and as a coffee lover, she personally tried and tested her recipes where she enjoyed crafting her own blends.

So it seems that aside from the determination and good marketing, she also had passion added for her to succeed.
“Everything was very uncertain in those days. I personally felt that uncertainty. So, I used that uncertainty as a motivation for something or to make something that will catch me if anything happens to my career,”
Photo from Anna Herman Magalona
The franchise owners or co-owners of branches are also Anna’s friends. The 15th branch of But First, Coffee opened last December 2021.
This just proved that a business can thrive amid the pandemic, if you have the right attitude and strategy.
Not only are they stars in television and movies but they are also stars to look up to in real life.

You’ve most likely read it on the news; Russia’s Vladimir Putin has ordered an all-out invasion to Ukraine, its ex-Soviet neighbor. With military troops deployed, by both sides, tensions are high not just in Europe but all over the world as this could be the catalyst for a World War 3. But you might have been asking or wondering, why is Russia trying to invade Ukraine in the first place? Why is this happening? Here are some key details that you need to know about the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
For the past few months, the military buildup and brinkmanship by Russia on the borders of Ukraine has caused tensions and just recently, the former has finally decided to invade the latter’s capital. The act has been condemned by many countries and organizations all over the world, as it posts a threat of destabilization in Europe.

Despite diplomatic efforts with the hopes of staving off a possible Russian invasion, none were fruitful in defusing the tensions that have been brewing for the past few months. Since last year, Russia has been tightening its military grip around Ukraine. This includes the amassing of tens of thousands of soldiers, all complete with equipment and artillery.
With the years-long conflict between the former Soviet countries, the invasion culminated what experts are saying ‘the greatest security crisis in Europe since the Cold War’.
CURRENT SITUATION ON THE BORDER
On February 24, Thursday morning, President Vladimir Putin ordered the attacks on Ukraine, citing it as the start of a “special military operation”, where bloodshed was warned unless Ukrainian forces would oblige and lay down their arms.
More than 150,000 Russian troops have surrounded the country of Ukraine, which started months ago. Outside intelligence have speculated the main purpose of positioning troops this large in number at the borders of Ukraine where fast forward to now, multiple cities in Ukraine including its capital Kyiv have suffered from bombings and explosions.

DONETSK AND LUHANSK PEOPLE’S REPUBLICS
With Moscow’s recent declaration of recognition for the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, this coincided with the attacks of Ukraine over the week, confirming the move as the pretext of its planned invasion. Located in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region, Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics are self-proclaimed breakaway states located within the country. Putin’s recognition of the separatist and pro-Moscow states is opposite to Ukraine’s views of the states as ‘terrorist organizations.
Putin’s deployment of Russian troops to the region is seen a justification of a wider conflict that is being started with the recent attacks in Ukraine including its capital.

NATO INVOLVEMENT
With this intensity, NATO or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization has ordered an increase of readiness of its rapid response force, with member countries deploying troops including planes and ships on standby.
Also called the North Atlantic Alliance, NATO is an intergovernmental alliance between 28 European countries and 2 North American countries which was established in 1949 during the aftermath of World War 2. With a main goal of establishing a system of collective security and mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party, NATO hopes that the tensions in Ukraine and Russia would simmer down.

While Ukraine is not a member of NATO, neighboring member countries in Eastern Europe such as Poland have readied its troops, planes and ships, all to be deployed in the region. Additionally, US President Joe Biden that they would also be deploying additional troops to Germany, with more troops to be redeployed in Eastern Europe. With all these movements, Biden still asserted that he won’t send troops to Ukraine itself, as the cause being it is not a NATO member.
Furthermore, the US also planned to declare new sanctions that aim to cut off certain strategic imports to Russia, serving as its ‘first tranche’ of measures in hurting two large institutions: Russia’s sovereign debt and the country’s elites as well as their family members. Biden, along with other European leaders have previously warned Russia of serious consequences if Putin would proceed with his plans of wider invasion.
HISTORY OF UKRAINE AND RUSSIA
The Soviet Union, or officially the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was a socialist state that spanned Eurasia from 1922 up to its eventual dissolution in 1991. Once a superpower, the ‘Soviet Empire’ was a coalition of European countries, with Moscow of Russia as its capital. Ukraine was also a member of the USSR.
According to the program, “the main goals and guidelines of the CPSU’s international policy” included ensuring favorable external conditions conducive to building communism in the Soviet Union; eliminating the threat of world war; disarmament; strengthening the “world socialist system”; developing “equal and friendly” relations with other countries.
Ukraine was a cornerstone of the Soviet Union until it aimed for independence in a democratic referendum in 1991, a move most experts said was death blow to the already weak USSR. With the eventual collapse of the Soviet Union, NATO in turn spread eastward with the goal of bringing in the Eastern European nations that once belonged to the Communist USSR. This included the former Soviet Baltic countries such as Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and after a few years, NATO extended its offer to be a member to Ukraine.

WHAT DOES PUTIN WANT?
This sent off the wrong signals to Russia, as Putin himself sees NATO’s expansion as an existential threat. Ukraine joining the Western military alliance was a “hostile act”, a view Putin mentioned to his constituents via televised speech. Putin asserted that Ukraine is part of Russia – culturally, linguistically, and politically.
Putin claimed that the West had corrupted Ukraine, citing the influence as a “forced change of identity”. This address was done at the same time Putin recognized the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics as well as casting the sovereignty of Ukraine.

Ukrainians, however, felt differently with this claim as for the past three decades, have sought to align more closely with organizations like the EU and NATO. The general Ukrainian citizens criticized Putin’s insistence, particularly that in recent polls, they now strongly favor membership of the US-led transatlantic military alliance.
The Minsk accords, hammered out in the Belarusian capital was made to end the bloodshed happening in eastern Ukraine for the past several years but to this date, it proved to be inefficient as key issues remain unsolved. This was further proven to be ineffective as Putin himself, weeks before the attack, mentioned that the accords “no longer exist”.
WHAT IS UKRAINE’s VIEW?
Before the attacks, current President Zelensky previously downplayed the danger of an all-out war with Russia, citing that if ever, Ukraine is prepared for any military aggression. These claims were opposite to Zelensky’s recent emotional televised speech, with martial law being declared.
“Russia began an attack on Ukraine today. Putin began war against Ukraine, against the entire democratic world. He wants to destroy my country, our country, everything we’ve been building, everything we are living for,” Zelensky said in a video message posted on his official Facebook page.
Since then, residents have fled the capital, some prepared for emergency evacuation kits, and some Ukrainian citizens have dedicated their previous weekends to become reservists.
With all these problems, Zelensky’s popularity among his constituents have significantly wavered, citing his failure to deliver on his promise of ending eastern Ukraine’s tension, cracking down on corruption and the judicial system, and also, a third wave of COVID-19 infections that affected the country’s economy.
Zelensky, who won the 2019 democratic elections via landslide victory, was a former comedian and actor where at point, he played a president on Ukrainian television, with some critics saying that this was a brutal baptism of fire into the real world of politics.
Heart Evangelista have been capturing everyone’s heart and attention with her glamorous daily outfits and fashion tips.
With the very high maintenance life she’s living, it’s quite difficult for us to imagine her doing ordinary things like a trip to the sari-sari store for example, a challenge that the fashionista gamely took on.
Photo from Heart Evangelista’s Instagram Account
Heart made a shopping dash but this time to a nearby sari-sari store in Kamuning, Quezon City.
This challenge came from one of her followers who replied on her question “What would you want me to do?” in one of her stories.
“Challenge accepted! Sari-sari store shopping! Ang saya saya! It brings back my childhood memories,” -Heart Evangelista, Instagram
Photo from Heart Evangelista’s Instagram Account
The sari-sari experience happened last Thursday, February 24. With her team, the short video showed Heart buying all sorts of stuff, from biscuits to chips, soft drinks and even conditioners.
She first chose a Rebisco biscuit with strawberry filling and pointed out that it’s her favorite and who a red chippy which is everyone’s all time favorite it seems even Heart.
The actress of course looked stunning while doing the visit with her pink silk outfit complemented by her beautiful bleached blonde hair.
People passing by the sari-sari store also got the treat of their life as they got to meet the artist and their purchase paid for. Not really large purchases but small ones like that happy little child who wanted Chuckie, an old man buying Mountain Dew drink and a man who asked for Cobra.
Buying every passerby their needs worried Heart at one point, as she jokingly said on her captions that she ran out of cash. “Ending: wala akong pang bayad. Naubos pera ko”
The video as of this writing has received more than 471,000 likes which goes to show how entertaining it is for people to see how people living such a different life fair in one of our daily lives.

And add with it the enthusiasm that Heart showed and she sure looked like she had lots of fun, as seen through her eye smiles.
Heart recently made headlines on the Paris Fashion Week where she luxury items by Dior, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and many more that she wore were sold out.
With this challenge a success, it’s maybe safe to say that we can expect other videos like her riding a jeepney and eating street food in the future.
