2023 Guide: Sardine Run in Moalboal

2

Swimming with the fishes is taken to a whole new level in Moalboal’s Sardine Run. Dive in and witness the jaw-dropping phenomenon of various schools of sardines just swimming about casually in the waters of Moalboal.

WHAT IS SARDINE RUN?

The Sardine Run is a phenomenon where large numbers of sardines swim about in groups big enough to block out the light from the sun. They make their way from the deep into the shallows to feed on planktons. It is not unique to the Philippines and is also an event which can be witnessed in South Africa. Although the South African Sardine Run holds the title of the greatest sardine run in the world, Cebu’s Sardine Run can still hold a candle as the second best.

The best thing about the sardine run is that it is completely ethical since the schools swim of their own accord to Panagsama Beach without fishermen attracting or herding them for the tourists so guests can participate in this event with a clear conscience.

They’re also basically harmless and swimmers can swim in and out of the schools, getting completely surrounded by shimmering fishes without getting a single scratch. About 20-30 meters farther from the shore, divers and swimmers will also be able to witness vibrant coral reefs plunging 70 meters into the abyss and predators such as Tuna and Jack preying on the copious schools of sardines.

To preserve their numbers, the local government and tourism office have made a deal with the fishermen to only catch fishes using hook and line, enough to feed their family.

WHERE TO WATCH THE SARDINE RUN?

Tourists don’t have to dive too deep to look for the sardines as the event can be witnessed on a daily basis just 30 meters off the coast of Panagsama Beach. It is extremely accessible to tourists because they won’t need sophisticated equipment to reach the sardines – they just need to put on some goggles, dive in the water, and they’re all set for the show.

Photo from discover.cebu.gov.ph

Unlike in South Africa where the sardine run phenomenon only occurs for a few weeks around May – July when temperatures are around 19°C, Moalboal’s Sardine Run occurs all-year round.

Although sardines typically love to swim in cool waters with temperatures of 14°C to 20°C, they can be seen on a daily basis near Panagsama Beach but in smaller numbers during the hotter seasons. The best time to visit Panagsama Beach for the Sardine Run is during the months of November to May when the rains aren’t blurring the view in the water.

Gold value increased, significant quarterly rise is expected

Gold just got even more golden.

Spot gold increased 0.2 percent on the final trading day of 2022 to reach USD1,818.70 (~PHP101,711.71) per ounce at 2:17 PM. However, U.S. gold futures remained at USD 1,826.2 (~PHP102,131.15), according to Reuters.

Photo from Unsplash

Due to expectations of fewer interest rate increases by the U.S., gold prices increased on Friday. The non-yielding metal is on track to end its best quarter since June 2020, thanks to predictions of fewer interest hikes by the U.S. Fed after falling from all-time highs earlier this year.

Even though the U.S. central bank’s two rate increases in September drove gold to a more than two-year low, the price of the metal is only down around 0.5 percent in 2022. Since then, however, prices have reversed their declines.

Economists predict that market mood will be influenced by how central banks throughout the world respond to growing inflation through 2023.

QUICK FACTS:

[dropcap]1[/dropcap]

The activity site is situated in Brgy. Tan-awan in the town of Oslob, a remote part of Cebu that is 3-4 hours away from the city or 4-5 hours drive from Mactan Airport.

[dropcap]2[/dropcap]

Diving and snorkeling are limited in time and people, and done by batch. Each batch has 30 minutes to watch or swim with the whale sharks. Prior to that, there is an informative talk and presentation about the Whale Sharks and STRICT RULES to be observed during the activity.

[dropcap]3[/dropcap]

All the Whale Sharks at the Oslob Whale Shark Snorkel tour are wild animals and come and go as they please. The floats you see on the surface are merely marking the area for motorized boats to stay away.

[dropcap]4[/dropcap]

All the boats used in the activity, at the feeding area, are paddled using wooden oars — leaving no harmful chemicals unlike boat propellers.

[dropcap]5[/dropcap]

There are marine biologists in the area monitoring the water activity. Images are taken each day in water and using astrological mapping – map the whale shark spots.

[dropcap]6[/dropcap]

The Whale Shark Watching tour provides many benefits including, but not limited to, providing a larger source of income and employment to a town that historically has a high unemployment rate and also a knock-on effect for the entire economy of Cebu. It encourages the local and foreign visitors alike to advocate in the preservation of the Whale Sharks and minimizes the fishing of these gentle giants in many countries.

Expect to pay lower income tax this 2023 under the TRAIN Law

Prices have indeed got higher these past few months, affecting many Filipinos with tighter budgets and shallower pockets. Aside from that, there’s also the news about the pending increase for the SSS and PhilHealth contributions, adding more expenses for some low-earning Filipinos.

But behind all of those is good news for the taxpaying citizens. Individuals with Purely Compensation Income, including Single Proprietors and those with Non-Business/Non-Profession Related Income, can anticipate increased take-home pay in 2023.

This tax update is per Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) Law, also known as Republic Act (R.A.) No. 10963, which went into effect on January 1st, 2018.

Beginning January 1, 2023, under the TRAIN Law, individual taxpayers who make less than P250,000 a year are still not subject to income tax. 15% to 30% will now apply to anyone making between P250,000 and P8,000,000 (down from 20% to 32% before 2023).

Individuals with taxable income above P8,000,000.00, however, will continue to pay tax at the same rate of 35%.

From January 1, 2023, onward, the income tax on the person’s taxable income will be calculated using the following schedules:

The new annual income tax rates significantly decreased by 5% for those with taxable income of more than $250,000 up to $2,000,00, while a 2% decrease for those with taxable income of more than $2,000,00 up to $8,000,000. This compares to the income tax rates imposed during the initial implementation of the TRAIN Law in 2018.

This holds promise for many Filipinos, especially the taxpayers. Truly, there are things worth looking forward to this 2023.
