LIST: 12 Food that Adds and Takes Minutes of Your Life

I know that hotdog in a bun is your go-to snack but hold that thought as they might not be that worth it. The seemingly harmless hotdog in a bun takes a staggering 36 minutes of your life. That is more than half an hour off your life.

A new study by the University of Michigan published in the Nature Food journal have clearly listed this one on the ‘Food that takes healthy Life’ list. Luckily, the study also noted that there are other food that can make you gain additional minutes to your life to balance it out.

There were 5,800 foods evaluated by the researchers. Each food composition was analyzed according to their net benefits and impacts.

Health Nutritional Index with nutritionist Victor Fulgoni III

The information was then made into a guide together with Global Burden of Disease study as basis.  It is a study where disease mortality and morbidity are associated with a single food choice of an individual.

The analysis was turned into minutes of life lost or gained per serving size of each food item consumed therefore giving birth to the Health Nutritional Index.

Food that takes Healthy Life

1. Chicken Wings 85g – 3.3 mins

Photo from unsplash.com by Brian Chan

Unli chicken wings restaurants are practically waving in all corners but you might want to rethink a weekly binge eating. I think we are already aware that too much of this is never good due to its sodium content and harmful trans fatty acids. Just 85g loses 3.3 mins, how much more is an unlimited set.

2. Beef Hotdog with a Bun- 36 mins

Photo from unsplash.com by Yuheng Chen

As I have mentioned earlier, a light snack like this can lessen your healthy life dramatically. This is largely due to the detrimental effect of processed meat.

3. Pizza 1 serving- 7mins

Photo from unsplash.com by Ivan Torres

A slice will never be enough and it already takes 7 minutes due to its high sodium content and the use of processed meats. Having it on a regular basis can also increase your risk of heart disease.

4. Soda 1 can- 12mins

Photo from unsplash.com by Mahbod Akhzami

Higher in life minutes loss than pizza, soda adds excessive amounts of added sugar and unnecessary calories. I know it quenches your thirst but it has no essential nutrients, no vitamins, no minerals, and no fiber.

5. Double cheeseburger- 8mins

Photo from unsplash.com by Amirali Mirhashemian

Burgers may have high-sodium content and a double one only makes it worse. High sodium can lead to high blood pressure and an increased risk for heart disease, stroke and kidney disease.

6. Bacon -6 mins

Photo from unsplash.com by Casey DeViese

Bacon is probably one of the most loved breakfast meals but we have to control our intake of this as well. Another processed meat and bad cholesterol are waving.

Food that adds Healthy Life

1. Nuts 30g- 25 mins

Photo from unsplash.com by Jenn Kosar

A very good news to all nut-lovers. Eating this serving of nuts and seeds yields 25 minutes of gained healthy life, which is an increase in good-quality and disease-free life expectancy according to the research.

2. Peanut butter jelly Sandwich 1 serving- 33mins

Photo from unsplash.com by Tyler Nix

As most of our breakfast are in the minutes of life lost list, this one is a breather. The nut content of PB&J has saved this meal to be in this list. To more PB&Js with you mate.

3. Baked salmon (13.5 minutes)

Photo from unsplash.com by Caroline Attwood

This fish meal is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, a great source of protein and it is high in B vitamins. Wrapped all these in one and you’ve got 13.5 minutes of a healthy life gained.

4. Banana (13.5 minutes)

Photo from unsplash.com by Eiliv-Sonas Aceron

In case you didn’t know, bananas contain happy hormones and that in itself is an additional to your healthy life. Aside from that it is also rich in Potassium for your heart health and it even aids digestion.

5. Tomatoes (3.8 minutes)

Photo from unsplash.com by Vince Lee

This fruit contains a major dietary source of the antioxidant lycopene, which has been linked to many health benefits, including reduced risk of heart disease and cancer. It also supplies vitamin A, which supports immunity, vision, and skin health. A tomato a day will definitely keep you healthy.

6. Avocado (2.8 mins

Photo from unsplash.com by Louis Hansel

The all-powerful avocado and the darling of social media. Not only are they delicious, high nutrient value and is added to various dishes due to its good flavor and rich texture, Avocados do not contain any cholesterol or sodium and are low in saturated fat. It helps you protect against Alzheimer’s disease and memory loss by giving you a good dose of vitamin E.

What you eat makes you, so keep healthy and eat healthy everyone.
