Traditional Pinoy Games We Played As Kids [Part 2]

1

It is important for us to preserve our Filipino traditions; they are what defines us and our culture. There are many things that are considered tradition, and the traditional games we played as kids are one of them. If you want to remember the good old days when you used to go outside and play till it was dark, take this trip down memory lane with me.

1. Bato Lata

Photo from philippines.fandom.com website

Bato Lata, also known as Tumba-Lata or Tumbang Preso is one of the most popular childhood games out there. It is played with only a tin can and a slipper. Each player must have a slipper, and the “it” is in charge of the can. The can must be placed at a distance away from the players. The player’s goal is to hit the can using their slippers and then run without getting caught by the “it” by the time they make the can stand.

2. Slipper Game

Photo from says.com website

Many may not have played the Slipper Game, but to those who have played it, it was a ton of fun. All the players must stand a short distance behind the “it”, and the “it” must face away from them. The “it” then throws the slipper behind him without looking and the players must catch it. If not, the players must stand still and not move. Otherwise, the first person caught moving will be the new “it”.

3. Dampa

Photo from steemit.com website

Instead of Pokémon, children back in the day used to collect colorful rubber bands and play Dampa. There are many ways to play this game, but the general gist of it is to move the rubber bands using your hands by forming them like a cup and slamming it on the ground so that the air coming out from your hands moves the rubber bands. Kids would race with each other’s rubber bands, trade them, and so much more.

4. Apir-apir

Photo from wheninmanila.com website

There are a lot of games involving clapping hands between four players, such as Bahay Kubo, Leron-leron Sinta, Appear Disappear, Nanay Tatay, etc. These are called Apir-apir games, or Hand-Clapping Games in English. You can look up the full lyrics on the internet.

5. Paper Dolls

Photo from etsy.com website

If you have a fondness for dressing up games even in your adult life like in the Sims games, it probably is due to the Paper Dolls we played as kids. They were cheap and affordable that we could buy them from stores on the street waysides. There were a lot of varieties too!

6. Balay-balay

Photo from barokandtakya.com website

Another trait that we got from childhood games and carried over to the Sims games would possibly be Balay-balay. It is when we make imaginary houses out of anything available. Curtains, sticks, stones, the whole deal. We can get really creative and resourceful.

7. Takyan

Photo from davaotoday.com website

A takyan is a weighted shuttlecock with, usually, colorful plastic straw ropes attached. With this toy, we kicked it with our friends on the air and suspend it there. The goal of the game was to not let the toy hit the ground.

8. Tagu-taguan

Photo from baamboozle.com website

Tagu-taguan is simply hide and seek, but what makes it special here in the Philippines is that the seeker has a special chant to say before finding those who are hiding, with the starting words as “Tagu-taguan maliwanag ang buwan”.

9. Luksong Tinik

Photo from mgapalarongpinoy.wordpress.com website

Much like the Luksong Baka, Luksong Tinik is about jumping over an obstacle. In this case, the player jumps over “thorns” i.e., the hands of the other players. The more hands get involved to jump over, the harder and higher it becomes!

10. Ubusan Lahi

Photo from xu.edu.ph

This is best played in large groups; the “it” needs to tag all the other players so that they become a part of the “it”, kind of like a zombie infecting a player to become another zombie. The “its” will aim to capture everyone usually at a given time until either everyone is captured or the time ends.

A very special, cute friendship in Cebu ft. Jay-R and Lalay

0

Friendships are those unique and special relationships we form as we go through life.

All the way to Cebu south, we discovered an interesting and heartwarming story of two friends, Mr. Jay-R and Lalay. Their adorable friendship will surely touch your hearts and give you a different perspective about friendships and people with special needs.

“Ni chat gyud diay tinuod si Lalay nako uy.

Pero unsaon ko man ni pag tubag tawn. Anhi na gyud masukod akong nahibaw-an sa mga salitang ugat at salitang payak nimo Lay. Imo gyud gipalabad akong ulo ron nga nag malinawon ra man unta akong pagmata.

Ako pa gyoi mu adjust nimo ani ron Lay? “-Jay-R

This is just one example of some of the cutest exchange between Mr. Jay-R and Lalay. Their chat box is a mess and linguistically impossible to understand which is what makes it more fun.

Klay Geraldizo, or popularly known as Lalay, 21, met Mr. Jay-R dela Calzada when the latter was constructing the 2nd branch of his restaurant in Naga City, Cebu. Lalay often goes to that area and helps out in cleaning and assisting other food stores nearby. When the store finally opened, he did the same thing he always does. Noticing Lalay, Mr. Jay-R offered him food which was then followed by an everyday occurrence in the restaurant, helping out and welcoming customers.

Meeting and interacting everyday then made the friendship grow.

https://www.facebook.com/jayr.delacalzada/posts/4990279827653489

Hailing from Naga, Mr. Lalay has a Down syndrome (DS) but is so mischievous and playful that making fun of each other was a common occurrence for them.

Knowing full well of his condition, Mr. Jay-R believes that treating him like everything is normal is the best thing to do. Though he also points out that he is very patient with him and makes it a priority to always listen to him.

“Even when he chats and I can’t understand a single word, I will still reply just to let him know that I am listening and I am reading all his messages.”-Jay-R

As all friendships do, they have their favorite things to do like doing Tiktok dances, eating out and visiting food establishments. They also post some of their funny everyday interactions like random video-calls, videoke, eating out, and driving around or according to sir Jay-R, him being Lalay’s personal driver.

When time came when Lalay cried so hard, Mr. Jay-R turned to a friend who used to teach people with special needs or with down syndrome for guidance. His friend explained that people with Down Syndrome are kind in nature and are very emotional and has even praised Lalay as high-functioning and teachable because he can differentiate jokes.

https://www.facebook.com/jayr.delacalzada/posts/4903586399656166

When asked what he wants to share to the readers:

“I just really think individuals with Down Syndrome needs to be treated just like us. I know they want and they deserve to be valued just like normal people. They deserve our utmost respect, love and affection. So to all of you, when you see Lalay or anyone with DS. A tight hug for Lalay will mean the world to him.”

– Mr. Jay-R dela Calzada

Being there for each other, understanding each other, and just loving them for who and what they are, those are the purest of friendships. And if you ever have one, cherish it.

Top 10 Filipino Childhood Games We All Used to Enjoy [Part 1]

1

1. Shatong

Photo from kapatiranfellowship.wordpress.com website

One of the popular childhood games among the boys, in this game two sticks, one flat and one short are involved. The short stick is either suspended with two pieces of stone (if the play area is made of cement or asphalt) or dirt (like in most provinces), just enough that the short stick can be flicked using the longer, flat stick. The other player would hit the short stick mid-air where the farther the distance it is thrown, the higher the points. Meanwhile, the opposing team would anticipate and catch the short stick to nullify the points and eventually take turns with the other team.

2. Luthang

Photo from steemit.com website

One of the games where our mothers would definitely be angry at us when we played it, luthang is definitely one of the more dangerous toys ever played when we were young. In this game, a hollow cylindrical piece of bamboo where one end is inserted with a wet piece of paper (the bullet), and the piston, usually made of the same bamboo stuffed with a wood is pushed rapidly at the other end. With air compressed, the bullet made of the wet piece of paper is pushed out with a pop.

3. Sabong sa Kaka

Photo from Wikipedia

In this game, female spiders (yes, live spiders) of various species of web weavers are pitted with another female spider on a stick. Both spiders will try to kill each other unless interrupted by the human handlers. Though very dangerous, kids from the past still play this game, having a collection of spiders of their own nestled in their decorative boxes.

4. Ting-ting cross

Photo from uniminutoradio.com.co

Similar to the America’s hopscotch, this Philippine variation of the game involves of an illustration of six square formed into a cross, where an “ayan” or a stone is thrown to the cross determining the number of steps to be taken to finish the game. Players take turn and the first one to complete the sequence of steps in the cross without touching the rims formed will win the game.

5. Patintero

Photo from akoaypilipino.eu website

Probably one of the most iconic Filipino childhood games, this game is also called ‘harangang taga’ or ‘tubigan’ in other areas in the country. In this game, players are grouped into two teams: an attack team and a defense team, with each team has up to five players. The attack team must try to run along the perpendicular lines from the home-base to the back-end, and return without being tagged by the defense players. The defending team are the ‘it’, and must stand on the designated lines and they can only move back and forth this line. The leader, however, usually in the first row, has the power to go to the middle perpendicular line, intersecting the other players’ lines making it harder for the attack players to accomplish their goal.

6. Jackstone

Photo from festiveiloilo.wordpress.com website

In this game, a small bouncy, rubber ball and a set of jacks or stones are required. To play this game, first, scatter the jacks onto the playing surface. Throw the ball into the air, pick one jack or stone, then let the ball bounce once and catch it. Do this repeatedly until all jacks or stones are collected. If the player fails to pick up the stone on time or the ball bounces twice, a foul is called, and the opposing player starts his turn to complete the set of stones or jacks. As the game progresses, in some places, further actions and signs are designed to make the game even harder.

7. Luksong Baka

Photo from smartboxph.wixsite.com website

Or roughly translated in English as “jump over the cow”, luksong baka is a game where one player crouches while the other players jump over them. After all players successfully jump over the ‘it’ or the crouching player, he/she will gradually change position to the point he/she is almost standing up. This makes it harder for the other players to jump over the it. This game is also a popular variation of another Filipino childhood game, luksong-tinik.

8. Chinese Garter

Photo from flickr.com website

As what the famous vlogger Mimiyuuuh once said, “being a ‘mother’ in Chinese garter makes you a strong, independent woman”. Mostly played by girls, in this game, two people hold both ends of a stretched Chinese garter horizontally while other players attempt to cross over it. The goal of the game is to cross without having tripped the said garter, and by each round, the garter’s height is raised. The game has many rules and variations, including two teams compete where each team is led by the ‘mother’, or the player that can save the other team players who fail to cross the garter.

9. Bahaw-bahaw

Photo from manillenials.com website

This game is generally played as many as ten players, divided into two teams. The objective of this game is to touch the home base of the opposing team without being tagged by the guards of the opposing team. Players can roam around the playing field, either to try to reach the base or catch the ‘bahaw’ opponents, where ‘bahaw’ is defined as those who let go of their home base the earliest.

10. Sungka

Photo from pinoy-culture.tumblr.com website

Mostly played indoors, this board game has lived through many generations. Played using a wooden board with seven smaller holes on each side and two bigger holes on either side, and shells or stones, the premise of the game is to collect more shells or stones than your opponent. The most shells or stones collected wins, and sungka is a two-player game.

South Korea’s NO Kids, NO Study Zones among others becoming a trend

0

It is a fact that the physical social world nowadays mostly consists of cafes and restaurants. They are what we call the social hubs where you meet your friends, loved ones to chill and just enjoy a good drink and good food.

These social places are generally for everyone but certain specific types of restrictions have now surfaced and becoming a common practice in cafes and restaurants in South Korea.

They are called a No * Zone. Simply, this refers to a space to which specific groups are denied access

Types of NO * Zone

1. NO Kids Zone

Photo from efe.com website

This is the first ‘no * zone’ to appear where children under 13 were denied entry in restaurants and cafes. One way or another, we have all experienced this, where children run and scream all over the place. Some brave ones complain to the managers and some just frowns at the parents or just bears with it. This uncomfortable situation to the parents, customers and owners made this restriction surface.

2. NO youth Zone

Photo from seoulbeats.com website

Young students are asked to not enter the establishment as some groups of students engage in deviant behavior as proven over and over before. Disturbing other costumers by being rude, smoking in non-smoking areas, loud talking and laughing, is a sure sign for them to be put on the no entry list.

3. NO Study Zone

Photo from diningaddiction.com website

Ever had the experience of entering a café and leaving abruptly due to lack of seats? This is because there are many people who head to cafes with the main purpose of studying and they occupy a table or tables for several hours. They are refrained to enter for ordering just one drink and proceeding to occupy a table for several hours will have an effect on the café’s turnover and the customer’s comfort as well.

4. NO Tuber Zone

Photo from koreabizwire.com website

Content is everything to a social media presence today which is why some creators film their daily lives. With or without permission, this can be a nuisance to both customers and staff. They comment on food causing disturbance to other customers and just moves around the place. And to top it off some even makes demands of a free meal from the restaurants they visit as a means of compensation which can be viewed as promotional videos.

5. NO Believer Zone

Photo from vaticannews.va website

This one is quite sensitive, the first and 2nd outbreak of covid-19 were both driven by religious groups in South Korea. They implemented this restriction as some churches continued to ignore official guidelines and people started worrying about sharing the same space with religious believers. This one may not work on the Philippines as we didn’t have this experience. Our churches here followed protocol immediately.

There were many arguments regarding these restrictions even in South Korea. Implementing them gives a certain vibe of dividing people and stereotyping. It may spread discrimination and hate in the community.

Others though, think that it is the right of the owner to deny access to certain groups and not suffer damage and that customers should have the right not to feel uncomfortable.

Personally, I agree to some of the no zones but not to all and depending on the places. We are already practicing some of these restrictions. If all of these are implemented and almost everyone is doing it, the social scene can also worsen in the future. As experts said, tension and unpleasant feelings will only grow by avoiding these uncomfortable situations instead of resolving them.

For those who do not know, a VPN or a virtual private network extends a private network across a public network and enables users to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if their computing devices were directly connected to the private network. Simply put, using a VPN allows you to have the same rights a certain country or place, like the USA, all while you are somewhere else.

In cases like this, securing a VPN can allow you to stream Disney+. Using the following steps, you can enjoy hits like Marvel TV shows like WandaVision, Loki and many more exclusive Disney+ content.

1. Look for a premium VPN service

Many VPN services are widely available these days such as Nord VPN, Surfshark and Express VPN. One of the most highly recommended VPN to use for Disney+ streaming is Express VPN.

2. Download the VPN app

Once you have selected your desired VPN, you can register and login to access such service. Make sure to have a secure internet connection too for a smooth process.

3. Connect to the USA server

Once you’re in the VPN service, there are many servers to choose from all over the world. Connect to the USA server to proceed streaming with Disney+. Servers “New Jersey 1&2”, “Washington DC” and “New York” are the highly suggested servers.

4. Login to your Disney+ account

After successfully securing a VPN to the mentioned servers, you can now login to your Disney+ account and enjoy the vast selection of their exclusive content.

Note: after following these steps, make sure that you have an active Disney+ subscription, as you still need a paying account to watch their content. This guide is only about configuring VPN, not pirating the streaming service.

Take note too that VPNs cannot make online connections completely anonymous, but however, they can make your connections more private and secure.
