Cebu Eats: Bogo City’s famous Pintos

0

Pintos, anyone? That’s one question that always garners positive responses. It’s hard to find someone who doesn’t like this succulent snack, and if this snack is new to you, then you’re up for a wonderful surprise.

This tightly-wrapped treat originates from Bogo, Cebu. While it comes from way up north, it has gained quite the reputation among locals and tourists alike.

Who wouldn’t fall in love with this delectable delicacy? Pintos is a soft yet firm, starchy yet moist, simple yet delicious bar of cornmeal traditionally wrapped and served in corn husk. It is typically consumed hot or warm, when its salty-sweet flavor and its tender-grainy texture shine the brightest.

Most Cebuanos enjoy this delicacy with a cup of local hot chocolate or sikwate.

How does this delicious corn confection get made? Fresh corn is scraped off the cob and ground and then combined with milk, sugar, and margarine or butter. The resulting mixture is then wrapped steamed or boiled in hot water for 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the recipe. Afterwards, a steamy husk of tasty pintos is born!

If a richer taste is desired, one can use young corn cobs and add condensed and evaporated milk to elevate the flavors.

Pintos is a treat that is deliciously enjoyed in many occasions. It is often bought and given as pasalubong, to be later eaten as a snack, and it can also appear in parties as desserts or finger food.

In Bogo City, The corn treat is celebrated in a grandiose way; they celebrate the Pintos Festival! The lively fiesta is celebrated in the later parts of May, and coincides with the feast of its patron saint, Saint Vincent Ferrer on May 26.

Whether it’s snack time, dinnertime, or time for a celebration, pintos will always have space in our hearts and bellies.

Plantitas Flex: How expensive are your plants?

Plantitas flex check.

Yes, some of you might not consider plants pricey or having of great value but they do. They are very expensive to a point where you just want to quit your job and start planting.

Plantitas, true plantitas are very rich believe me. But all their money are on those pots or the ones growing on them. All that investment on different pots and type of plants is really over the top.

So, we have made a list of all the most expensive plants found here in Cebu or the country. Now, you might want to check this list for there may be a treasure growing in one or two of your pots, you’ve never noticed before.

1. Green Snake Plant

Price: P6,050

The most commonly seen and yet taken for granted. I thought it might be cheaper because it is almost everywhere but surprise, they are definitely not cheap. The Green Snake Plant is of low-maintenance with not much sunlight and water needed. It is famous as an air freshener indoors.

2. Pilea peperomioides

Price: P6,500

It is famous for being a Chinese money plant, it is an herb that thrives indoors with indirect sunlight. A table or desk plant for sure as with its cute seemingly round leaves going after our hearts and our pockets. It also only requires to be watered every one to two weeks. It is also an air purifier and famous for its symbolism as a money plant.

3. Calathea orbifolia

Price: P7,000

With its sophisticated decorative lines in its leaves, the Calathea orbifolia is a prayer plant. They definitely look expensive but I never thought this would be its price. Sell one of these and you’ll get a whooping 7k. It is carefully kept in partial shade, humidity, and good drainage. It provides a better indoor climate as an air purifier and as an aesthetic piece.

4. Anthurium clarinervium

Price: P10,000

Now, this might look like a normal, simple plant but notice that its leaves has whitish veins making it more beautiful and elegant. Make sure to keep this in mind when you search your pots for this particular to not mistake it in something else of similar form. They can be found sometimes in nature, growing on the side of cliffs, rocks, and trees, so you  might want to check out the surrounding vegetation the next time you go camping. You might want to avoid overwatering a pot of Anthurium clarinervium and placing it under direct sunlight.

5. Philodendron Lisa

Price: P15,000

It has a woman’s name and it sure looks beautiful. From its unique color, it is quite hard to find but not impossible which is why it’s pricey. It is also sometimes called Majesty which fits because it just exudes this confidence and power while still looking gorgeous. Just make sure not to put it under direct sunlight and keep the soil and roots wet.

6. Variegated Alocasia Plant

Price: P18,000 – 20,000

It’s a must have for those that can afford I might add. Its staggering price may have come from its exceptional elephant ear plant reputation. Its beautiful large green and white variegated leaves and height makes it more magnificent and ideal for an indoor design. It needs bright, indirect light and a moist soil to grow.

Photo from thursd.com website

7. Monstera Albo

Price: P60,000

These variegated monsteras are rare as you can tell with its over the top price. It’s a big plant with large stunning white patterns that covers almost half of its leaves. You can see these being placed in high end buildings and resorts. To care for it, just keep it in a room with low light and it does not even require frequent watering.

After writing this, I am now quite sure that my mother has at least 7 out of that list. It is time to water them plants and sell them.

How about you? Have you seen one of your plants on this list?

LOOK: Original Rattan Weavers of Furniture and Crafts in Sogod, Cebu

Admit it. You’ve also been sucked up by that aesthetic world that only woven rattan can give. We have all searched where to buy it and even order it wherever we see it, which I am guilty of.

Little did we know, we have here the original weavers itself and products that are much more high-quality made than those others out there.

Located in the national highway going to Northern Cebu in Sogod, woven rattan furniture and other handicraft products made from natural organic materials are seen being sold lined up along the street.

Rattan is a type of climbing or trailing vine-like palm found in the tropical jungles in Asian countries and the largest source is our own, the Philippines. So, it’s no wonder that we have the original creators/weavers here as it has always been part of our culture.

Photo from google.com
Photo from google.com

Identified by its tough, solid stems, a rattan’s vine can grow as long as 200 to 500 feet but is cut into 13-foot lengths when harvested. They are then dried in the sun and then stored for seasoning. After that, they are straightened, graded by diameter and quality then shipped to furniture manufacturers or for this article, to our Sogod rattan weavers.

As a material, rattan is lightweight. It is easy to move and handle and can withstand extreme conditions of changing weather may it be the hottest summer, the coldest nights or the humid air. It also has a natural resistance to insects which makes it the type of material that would survive in a tropical country.

All the rattan products made in Sogod are well known for its strength and durability. They are able to be bend and curve these rattan materials taking on many wonderful curving forms with its light, golden color.

They are certainly of high level of beauty and comfort which makes it perfect for all your aesthetic dreams and designs. It brightens a room or outdoor environment conveying the tropical paradise that the Philippines is.

Women from our country are stealing the game of lifting, first by the Olympic gold of Hidilyn in Weightlifting and now by Ompod’s golds in Powerlifting. If that isn’t a flex for the strength and power of women then you are living under a rock.
