Ninety-five families of informal settlers in Carcar City were named beneficiaries of Panaghiusa Village, the first big time community-led socialized housing project mobilized by Kalambuan sa Dakbayan (KD) Foundation, Inc.
Panaghiusa Village, which is located in a 6,000 sqm property in Barangay Ocaña, Carcar City, is set for groundbreaking in November 24, 2022, Thursday.
This horizontal development is under the Community Mortgage Program turn-key modality of the Social Housing Finance Corporation (SHFC), in partnership with the local government unit, the Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP), the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD), and the Sun Communities Development Corporation.
In the last quarter of 2023, the first 30 units will be turned over to identified beneficiaries, with the next 30 units following in 2024 and the remaining 35 units in 2025.
“The entire 6,000 sqm lot could have been developed for commercial purposes. But the KD Foundation has chosen to align with the commitment of its partners in providing affordable housing units and well-planned communities for underprivileged Filipinos,”
KD FOUNDATION PRESIDENT ATTY. JOSE DALUZ III SHARED, APART FROM MENTIONING VARIOUS OTHER NON-HOUSING GRASSROOTS PROJECTS THAT THE FOUNDATION HAS ACCOMPLISHED.
Each family beneficiary will be turned over with a 32 sqm two-storey unit, in compliance with the standards of Batas Pambansa (BP) Blg. 220 on the development of economic and socialized housing projects.
To foster a sustainable community, the PCUP has plans to provide these low-income families with livelihood training programs that will also address relevant needs in the project area such as agricultural production. They intend to build a designated training hall along with the social housing units.
“For now, we are starting off with one barangay. This is meant to be a model project for the socialized housing neighborhoods that will follow as KD Foundation continues to mobilize in other areas,”
DALUZ SAID, HIGHLIGHTING THAT THEY ARE ALSO LOOKING AT ANOTHER 1.2-HECTARE LOT WITHIN CARCAR.
He added that landowners of squatter settlements are mostly willing to sell their property for permanent occupation, but there needs to be a mobilizer for the collaborative implementation among partner organizations and concerned government agencies.
Regal, picturesque, and iconic. These are just some words that describe the famous Fuente Osmeña Circle, a focal landmark in the city of Cebu. The landmark has become one of the most notable places in the city and continues to be, serving both aesthetics and utility.

It consists of a fountain and a park, located inside a rotunda near Jones Avenue and General Maxilom Avenue in Cebu City, Philippines. People frequently congregate there to unwind, exercise, or simply catch up with friends. Additionally, it serves as a venue for a variety of special events, including pageants, social gatherings, and official occasions.
But soon enough, the place will go through a major makeover, as there have been plans to add a new feature to it. The new addition will be a “park bridge,” and designs have already been proposed for it.

The park bridge will be a platform elevated from the ground with an axial ring working as a connector to “establish a link that will merge all of the parts of Fuente Osmeña Circle, making it all into one coherent open-air lifestyle zone.” The façade of the existing buildings will be divided in half horizontally, and from this point on, a new pedestrian level will be created.
To fit in without standing out too much, it is also intended to have a sleek and minimalistic appearance. This concept will enable it to realize its open “mall-in-the-park” notion.
To keep pedestrians safe, elevators are also planned to be placed on the opposing end to allow easy access and eliminate the risk of crossing through dangerous traffic. Moreover, the proposal also ensures that the Fuente Osmeña Circle will be enhanced by it, helping it serve as the focal point along the scenic view and aesthetically-pleasing establishments.

At the age of five, most children would still be playing around with toys or exploring the world with their senses. These years are considered some of the most crucial periods of life, which call for close supervision from adults.
Photo from Alvin Aguilar
But who would think that at this age, some children would be achieving records and winning championships already? Aleia Aguilar is an outstanding example of that after winning in the recently held 2022 Abu Dhabi Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championships. This kid is truly a remarkable case of skill at an early age!
TRAINING THEM EARLY ON
Her achievement can be attributed to her early exposure to the sport, thanks to her parents, who are also both Jiu-Jitsu enthusiasts. Her mother, Maybelline Masuda, is a Filipina Jiu-Jitsu gold medalist. Her father, Alvin Aguilar, is the pioneer of Jiu-Jitsu in the country and the first-ever Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and medalist in international competitions.
Photo from Alvin Aguilar
Even in her innocence and naivety to the world, she was already exposed to Jiu-Jitsu. “She was born into jiu-jitsu. I was bringing her with me to training after giving birth to her when she was as young as three weeks old,” Maybelline shared.
At Aleia’s age, she is now considered to be the youngest Filipino world champ in the field of Jiu-Jitsu, a combat/self-defense sport known for “grappling, ground fighting, and submission holds.”
LOVE, MOM AND DAD
In an Instagram post, Alvin penned a message for her daughter, saying that “I’m beyond happy that my baby girl is now the Philippines’ youngest world champion.”
Photo from Alvin Aguilar
Aleia has also been said to have already shown discipline and determination at a very young age. Alvin added that her daughter has been excelling both in academics and sports because she has been “always working hard.”
On the other hand, Maybelline narrated her daughter’s participation in the competition. She remembered feeling more nervous than she ever felt when competing for herself, and being not able to sleep easily.
“I couldn’t sleep the night before, but we pulled through and she got what we came here for,”
Do you remember the time when Coke bottles were still ₱6 and pandesals only cost ₱5 for three pieces? Those were some of the good times when you could still buy much with less money.
Photo from Unsplash
But things have changed now. You could buy a whole meal’s worth for just ₱20 before; but now, your ₱20 could only buy so little!
The main culprit – is inflation or the increase of prices over a given period. Such a phenomenon is normal and a part of daily economics, but its current rate is seemingly higher than tolerable, affecting Filipinos and the way they consume things.
Inflation is usually determined by three main factors, including demand-pull inflation, cost-push inflation, and built-in inflation. Demand-pull inflation happens when demand for goods/services exceeds production capacity, cost-push inflation happens when production costs increase prices, and built-in inflation happens when wages rise as a result of price increases, which creates a wage-price spiral.
Photo from Unsplash
Back in 2020, the inflation rate remained at a steady rate of 2.4 percent. Commodities during that time were still pretty affordable and the purchasing power of the peso was still quite strong. But with the inflation rate reaching a whopping rate of 6.4 percent last July, it would now take more or less twice the money spent before to buy particular goods.
As a result, many Filipinos have been aching as they dig deeper into their pockets, helplessly seeing prices go up continuously. Some even say that what used to be their budget for a week has now shrunk to mere three days only, making both budgets and belts tighter.
Lifestyles are forced to change as prices continue to soar, with most Filipinos lowering their standards of living. Those that rely on their fixed incomes now have to find other sources of income or they run the risk of having insufficient funds for sustenance. However, there are ways to manage these effects, such as planning, exploring other sources of income, reducing expenses, and venturing into investments.
You may have already started to experience the effects of inflation, with you affording less than before. Unfortunately, the inflation rate has been forecasted to keep going up, which calls for drastic measures.

But still, you can always choose to look at the bright side and make the most of the opportunities that you are presented with. With the right mindset and planning, you will be able to make it through despite the inflation.
