QUICK FACTS:

[dropcap]1[/dropcap]

The activity site is situated in Brgy. Tan-awan in the town of Oslob, a remote part of Cebu that is 3-4 hours away from the city or 4-5 hours drive from Mactan Airport.

[dropcap]2[/dropcap]

Diving and snorkeling are limited in time and people, and done by batch. Each batch has 30 minutes to watch or swim with the whale sharks. Prior to that, there is an informative talk and presentation about the Whale Sharks and STRICT RULES to be observed during the activity.

[dropcap]3[/dropcap]

All the Whale Sharks at the Oslob Whale Shark Snorkel tour are wild animals and come and go as they please. The floats you see on the surface are merely marking the area for motorized boats to stay away.

[dropcap]4[/dropcap]

All the boats used in the activity, at the feeding area, are paddled using wooden oars — leaving no harmful chemicals unlike boat propellers.

[dropcap]5[/dropcap]

There are marine biologists in the area monitoring the water activity. Images are taken each day in water and using astrological mapping – map the whale shark spots.

[dropcap]6[/dropcap]

The Whale Shark Watching tour provides many benefits including, but not limited to, providing a larger source of income and employment to a town that historically has a high unemployment rate and also a knock-on effect for the entire economy of Cebu. It encourages the local and foreign visitors alike to advocate in the preservation of the Whale Sharks and minimizes the fishing of these gentle giants in many countries.

Expect to pay lower income tax this 2023 under the TRAIN Law

Prices have indeed got higher these past few months, affecting many Filipinos with tighter budgets and shallower pockets. Aside from that, there’s also the news about the pending increase for the SSS and PhilHealth contributions, adding more expenses for some low-earning Filipinos.

Photo form Unsplah

But behind all of those is good news for the taxpaying citizens. Individuals with Purely Compensation Income, including Single Proprietors and those with Non-Business/Non-Profession Related Income, can anticipate increased take-home pay in 2023.

This tax update is per Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) Law, also known as Republic Act (R.A.) No. 10963, which went into effect on January 1st, 2018.

Beginning January 1, 2023, under the TRAIN Law, individual taxpayers who make less than P250,000 a year are still not subject to income tax. 15% to 30% will now apply to anyone making between P250,000 and P8,000,000 (down from 20% to 32% before 2023).

Individuals with taxable income above P8,000,000.00, however, will continue to pay tax at the same rate of 35%.

From January 1, 2023, onward, the income tax on the person’s taxable income will be calculated using the following schedules:

The new annual income tax rates significantly decreased by 5% for those with taxable income of more than $250,000 up to $2,000,00, while a 2% decrease for those with taxable income of more than $2,000,00 up to $8,000,000. This compares to the income tax rates imposed during the initial implementation of the TRAIN Law in 2018.

This holds promise for many Filipinos, especially the taxpayers. Truly, there are things worth looking forward to this 2023.

LIST: Official Philippine Holidays for 2023

A new list of regular and unique non-working holidays was announced by Malacañang on Wednesday. Some dates had been changed to support the “holiday economics” that had previously been put into place under Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s presidency.

Photo from Unsplash

In President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s Proclamation No. 90, some holidays were adjusted “under the principle of holiday economics,” where they aimed to boost domestic travel and tourism revenue in the country.

Some of these include April 10, 2023, a regular holiday to mark Araw ng Kagitingan, which falls on a Sunday. He also changed Bonifacio Day’s normal holiday to November 27. In addition, January 2, 2023, will be a special non-working day in honor of New Year’s Day, which occurs on a Sunday, and “in observance of the Filipino tradition of visiting relatives and spending time with their families.”

Moreover, he designated December 31, 2023, and November 2, 2023, as special non-working days, thereby reversing the position taken in the latter years of the previous administration of President Rodrigo Duterte in which All Souls’ Day and the final day of the year were not declared holidays.

With that, here is the list of the regular holidays for 2023:

  • New Year’s Day – January 1, 2023 (Sunday)
  • Araw ng Kagitingan – April 10, 2023 (Monday nearest April 9, 2023)
  • Maundy Thursday – April 6, 2023
  • Good Friday – April 7, 2023
  • Labor Day – May 1, 2023 (Monday)
  • Independence Day – June 12, 2023 (Monday)
  • National Heroes Day – August 28, 2023 (Last Monday of August)
  • Bonifacio Day – November 27, 2023 (Monday nearest November 30)
  • Christmas Day – December 25, 2023 (Monday)
  • Rizal Day – December 30, 2023 (Saturday)
Photo from Unsplash

For special non-working days:

  • EDSA People Power Revolution Anniversary – February 25, 2023 (Saturday)
  • Black Saturday – April 8, 2023
  • Ninoy Aquino Day – August 21, 2023 (Monday)
  • All Saints’ Day – November 1, 2023 (Wednesday)
  • Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary – December 8, 2023 (Friday)
  • Last Day of the Year – December 31, 2023 (Sunday)

Finally, here are two additional special non-working days:

  • January 2, 2023 (Monday)
  • November 2, 2023 (Thursday)

For the declaration of holidays in observance of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, the Malacañang will post two separate declarations after the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos makes a recommendation about the timing of these certain Islamic holidays.

One of the adulting things to consider in the Philippines is paying for your SSS.

Now if you are creating your own career path or just having an unemployed gap, there is no need to worry for your future as you can still enjoy benefits from SSS through voluntary membership.

There are two ways to change your status from employed to voluntary. There is the first one which is very easy and hassle-free via online or if you find it hard or complicated to transact online then you can physically visit any SSS branch.

1. Log in to My.SSS portal

Just login to the My.SSS portal and generate a Payment Reference Number (PRN). Choose “Voluntary’’ or “OFW” as your membership type. This will automatically change your status after the contribution is paid.

You can go to any payment centers nationwide or pay it online for less hassle via GCash.

2. Personally go to the nearest SSS branch office

Check the box that says “Voluntary” under “Type of Payor”, membership status will be updated when the payment is posted.

For Nonworking spouse, put a check mark next to “Non-Working Spouse” on the E-4 form and provide your spouse’s CRN or SSS number and monthly income along with his signature of agreement to your SSS membership.

There is no harm and all good to being prepared. So don’t be afraid or hesitate to pay for your SSS contributions.
