All You Need to Know about eTravel and How to Apply

Departure Cards go paperless with eTravel!

If you traveled from a different country to another, you might have received a paper departure card. The departure card is a legal document that Immigration gives to passengers for them to provide their identification. The card is also used to keep track of a passenger’s departure from a country.

Photo from Unsplash

Starting May 1, 2023, paper-based departure cards will no longer be used or, in other words, phased out.

According to the Bureau of Immigration, departing passengers will be making use of an electronic platform called eTravel. They have to accomplish immigration and health declaration requirements using the app.

eTravel is the Philippine One-Stop Electronic Travel Declaration System. It was launched on December 2022. According to Norman Tansiongco, BI Commissioner, eTravel will allow a faster and more efficient immigration process.

Starting April 15. The paper-based cards will slowly disappear. The Bureau also urges departing passengers to open the site 72 hours and no later than 3 hours from their scheduled flight.

29-year-old Goes Viral on Tiktok for Being His Grandmother’s Caregiver

If you have been on Tiktok lately, you might have seen the adorable and heartwarming video of a guy who cares for his Grandmother.

Photo from Chris Punsalan on TikTok

That guy might have been 29-year-old Chris Punsalan, a full-time caregiver to his 96-year-old grandmother. Chris’ videos are usually about what it looks like to take care of his ailing grandmother, and most of the time, they would have adorable conversations or banters.

The way Chris interacts with his Grandmother immediately captured the hearts of Netizens from around the world. The 29-year-old’s Tiktok videos now have millions of views.

Chris, his grandmother, and his family reside in Nevada, USA. His family hailed from Pampanga, Philippines but decided to migrate to Nevada.

Photo from Chris Punsalan on TikTok

So, how did Chris become his grandmother’s full-time caregiver?

Chris revealed that it was his decision to volunteer. His grandmother took care of him while he was growing up, and he hated the idea of seeing her go to home care. Chris’ grandmother has osteoporosis and is unable to walk.

Sharing Experiences on Tiktok

Chris started posting on Tiktok back in 2019. Meanwhile, in 2020, he started posting mini day-in-the-life vlogs on the video-sharing platform.

Of course, posting on social media comes with the price of getting bashed. People have been people sending hate or negative comments to the content creator. Some branded him as a “clout-chaser.” However, Chris denied the allegations of using his grandmother for fame.

The 29-year-old even shared that people commenting negatively are often fellow caregivers. However, he stressed that caregiving is complex and can be very isolating.

But Chris did not let the negativity get to him. Because of his videos, many people have been stepping up and telling him that he inspires them to care for their grandparents.

The Ups and Downs of Chris Punsalan

Even on Tiktok, Chris is open to his mental and emotional struggles as his grandmother’s caregiver. He even shared how difficult it is when his grandmother forgets about him sometimes.

Photo from Chris Punsalan on TikTok

Chris also urges his viewers and everyone to cherish their grandparents and loved ones because, according to Chris, “Life is so fragile.”

For those who still have grandparents around, tell them you love them, kiss them, hug them, and just cherish all the time you have with them.

Know the Difference Between Abstinence and Fasting

Matthew 4:1-2, “Then Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil, and after he had fasted for forty days and forty nights, then he was hungry.”

Photo from Unsplash

During Holy Week, those who are catholic observe fasting and abstinence. However, only a lot of people know the difference between the two. But one thing is shared between the two: both are ways to show devotion to one’s faith.

Let’s break down the difference between Abstinence and Fasting and all you need to know about these observances during Holy Week.

The Difference Between Abstinence and Fasting

Let’s start with Abstinence. According to the Philippine Jesuits, abstinence is observed by avoiding meat. Kinds of meat that should be avoided are Pork, Beef, Chicken, and lamb, among others. However, eggs, milk products, and condiments made from meat are exempted.

Photo from Unsplash

What can people substitute for meat? People can consume fish and all cold-blooded animals.

Abstinence is observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all Fridays during the Lenten season.

On the other hand, fasting is a form of penance where people should only eat one full meal per day and two light meals or snacks. Fasting is observed every Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

Who Are Exempted From Fasting/Abstinence?

Some people are exempted from fasting or abstinence. According to traditional catholic teaching, people who are below 14 years old, senior citizens, and those who are sick are exempted from observing fasting and abstinence.

Photo from Unsplash

The Philippine Jesuits also stated that other people who can choose not to participate are those who are materially poor and homeless. Maids, houseboys, laborers, policemen, security guards, doctors, and nurses are also likely exempted.

Substitute for Abstinence

As per the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), if you can’t perform abstinence or fasting, you may read the Bible, attend Masses, and pray the Holy Rosary. Meanwhile, the Philippine Jesuits stated on their website that you may offer the work that you do.

Photo from Unsplash

There you go. Now that you know everything about fasting and abstinence, you now have a better understanding of why Catholics observe both penances. This is also a reminder that we all have our ways of showing our faith and love for our Lord. Let us not judge each other and remain respectful of each of our own ways of professing our faith and loyalty.

Let’s Settle: Is It Okay to Travel During Holy Week?

It’s already Holy Week, and people are scrambling to get on a plane, boat, or bus to go home. Meanwhile, others take this time to go on a vacation.

This begs the question, is it okay to travel during Holy Week?

Photo from Unsplash

Back in 2016, the San Carlos Seminary’s rector, Msgr. Hernando Coronel expressed that Holy Week is not only to reconnect with God. It is also a time for us to reconnect with our families.

In an interview, Coronel stated that the Church has no rule that prohibits people from going on a vacation during Holy Week. “It is also a time to unwind with the family and exchange stories with one another,” he added.

However, the Catholic Church also urges everyone to visit the church and pray. As per Coronel, the Church requests us to give, even a little time, to thank Jesus for what he has done for us.

Holy Week Superstitious Beliefs

So, where did the notion “it’s not okay to travel during Holy week” come from? — Filipino superstitious beliefs may have something to contribute to that.

Milano, Metropolitan City of Milan, Italy | Photo from Unsplash

According to superstitious beliefs, traveling during Holy Week may result in accidents. This is because evil spirits gain strength during this time due to the death of Christ. Related to this, they say that wounds also tend to heal longer than normal during Holy Week.

Remember when your parents would prohibit you from playing? They will say that if you get wounded while playing, it will heal longer. As a kid, it was terrifying to think about.

In addition, there is also a belief that urges people to avoid taking a bath and doing laundry at 3 PM on Good Friday. This is because they believe that 3 PM is the time of Christ’s death.

Photo from Jhon Willies Trajano Padecio

The bottom line is there is no harm in traveling or going on a vacation during Holy Week. However, we do have to remember that we should visit churches and offer prayers. Watching movies isn’t bad either, as long as they are related to our faith or about the passion of Christ.

The PLDT wireless subsidiary Smart Communications, Inc. recently increased and intensified its call for Smart Users to register their SIM. Smart warns that those who fail to register their SIM will result in SIM deactivation or ‘SIM dead’.

But wait, there’s more. With SIM dead, users will no longer have access to any apps linked to their mobile numbers, such as social media apps, messaging apps, and even delivery apps. In addition, if you use your phone number to recover forgotten passwords, with SIM Dead, you won’t be able to recover it using the mobile number linked to your account.

According to Francis E. Flores, SVP and Head of Consumer Wireless Business -– Individual at Smart, “Our smartphone has become an extension of ourselves, and failing to register our SIM will cut us off from the many technological conveniences that enable us to love more today.”

Flores encourages everyone to register their Smart and TNT SIMs before April 26, 2023.
