Unconventional Love: Exploring the Rising Trend of Dating on LinkedIn

Online dating has forever changed the landscape of dating, and from there, it is clear that along with everything else, the way we bond and form relationships with others is ever-evolving. LinkedIn, a networking site popular for building agencies for professionals, started to become more than a place where people find connections for their growing careers.

Photo from Unsplash

In terms of branding and purpose, of course this has never been endorsed by the platform, however, LinkedIn romance stories sparked discourse about the intersection of interests happening in the site. Conversations revolve around whether or not combining professional pursuits with romance is okay.

The Rise of Dating Hacks

According to Dustin Kidd, a sociology professor at Temple University, the phenomenon of online platforms transcending their own original purpose is not new. He dubbed this concept as “dating hacks”. This already happened in previous social media sites, those as early as Friendster and Myspace. Apparently, LinkedIn isn’t immune from people seeking for love whenever they see fit. The common thread between all of these platforms is the direct messaging feature which allows users to communicate privately. This leads to connections going beyond professional relationships.

Photo from Unsplash

A 24-year-old personal organizer in New York City named Samuela John stands as a testament to the LinkedIn Love Story phenomenon. She mentioned that three separate men have approached her on the site, talking business with sprinkles of personal interest. A lot more people have shared their stories regarding the growing trend of users navigating the realm of online dating and professional networking at the same time.

LinkedIn’s Unique Appeal

Users find appeal in LinkedIn in terms of dating due to the credibility of the people who use it — giving them details to at least know a person on a certain level. Knowing someone’s education, employment history, and endorsements from other colleagues gives users the confidence to trust someone’s background, establishing whether or not a certain person could be a romantic prospect.

Photo from Unsplash

With all that said, the issue of consent and appropriateness of the practice of making LinkedIn a lowkey dating app remains in question. Content creator Charlotte Warren posited the invasive nature of unsolicited advances in a platform purely made for business and professional connections. Where do we draw the line between carefree interactions and professional boundaries? According to a survey conducted by Passport Photo Online, 91% of female users have reported unwanted romantic and inappropriate messages in a place they’re supposed to feel safe from something they casually (and wrongly) experience walking on streets. This unwanted attention caused women to have another layer of caution in a platform that was built to be professional.

Photo from Unsplash

While the lines between professional networking and personal connections on LinkedIn are becoming increasingly blurred, it is important to take note of the implications this can have on its user base. Yes, evolution of anything is as natural as Charles Darwin says, and of course, this paradigm works for some people. But as rational and progressed we have become as individuals and as a society, it is important to take a hint and value other people’s boundaries. Before hitting that flirty LinkedIn message, perhaps you can ask yourself if it’s the right time and place, or better yet, if it’s actually even called for.

Liquor Ban to Be Imposed During Sinulog Festival 2024

Alcoholic beverages in public places will be banned during the Grand Parade and Grand Ritual Showdown on January 21, 2024.

Photo from Unsplash

According to Mayor Michael Rama, the liquor ban will take effect for the whole day on January 21 but will only be observed along the route of the Grand Parade, which is at the South Road Properties (SRP).

The liquor ban is to make sure that there will be no public commotion or chaos during the parade due to the influence of alcohol.

“Now, those who will carelessly drink publicly and you will cause commotion, you will be accountable. So you have to be responsible,” said Rama.

However, even though Rama verbally announced the liquor ban, Councilor Phillip Zafra of the Committee on Peace and Order said that they would still require an executive order to be written. To properly enforce the ban, permits issued for liquor dispensing should be reassessed.

Indulge in SUTUKIL and More with Cebu City’s First Tuna-focused Restaurant

If there is one thing Cebuanos love other than lechon, it’s sugba, tuwa, and kilaw or SUTUKIL. Through the years, many Sinugba spots in Cebu have been in, but the originals are stationed near SM City Cebu. However, a new name wants to earn a spot in the game of SUTUKIL in Sugbo — the VillaTuna.

VillaTuna promises its customers fresh and local ingredients every day. But that’s not all; they are by far the only restaurant in Cebu City that offers fully tuna and fish dishes: No pork, no beef, and no other meats, just fish.

But this is where it gets interesting, they have not one, not two, but more than 20 different tuna and fish dishes that are worth trying.

Tuna Tinola, Grilled Tuna Panga, Tuna Tapa and More

Who would expect that tuna could be cooked in more ways than one? At VillaTuna, they take pride in their best-selling Tuna Tinola. They even sold 250,000 orders of tinola in all their branches. Moreover, they are among the few restaurants still offering tinola kalamunggay.

A spoonful of the umami flavor of the tinola and the soft tuna fish definitely makes a hearty meal. Other tuna dishes that VillaTuna offers are tuna tapa, tuna sisig, tuna pakfry, and tuna kinilaw.

“Welcome Home!” is VillaTuna’s greeting because every dish at the restaurant is a nostalgic nudge to home-cooked meals.

Modern-native Interior, Al-fresco Dining, and Spacious Parking Space

Gone are the days when you must stress out about where to park. At VillaTuna, the parking space is absolutely spacious and safe.

Moreover, VillaTuna prides itself on its Modern-native Interior with accents and accessories from Mindanao. The open space provides customers with al-fresco dining and fresh air.

Aside from the great interior, VillaTuna also values cleanliness and order. From the kitchen to the restrooms, everything is spick and span.

VillaTuna Franchise

Dreaming of your own SUTUKIL restaurant? Good news! VillaTuna is open for franchise. They now have franchisees who are loyal customers and want to spread the greatness of VillaTuna even further.

From Villa Tuna Republika to VillaTuna

VillaTuna started as VillaTuna Republika in 2017 and was established in Butuan City at the Villa Kananga branch. They started to rebrand and soon became VillaTuna, which means “Home of Tuna Dishes.”

And now, they are here in the Queen City of the South with a mission to provide healthier alternatives for Cebuanos. But that’s not all! VillaTuna also has a branch in Liloan for those who want to dine and enjoy all-tuna goodness.

VillaTuna is here to satisfy your ‘lutong bahay’ cravings with healthier food options for you and your family. It is the perfect place to bring your parents who, for sure, love the “inato” style of eating. What are you waiting for? Mangaon ta sa VillaTuna!

Why “T-Bird at Ako” Should Have a 2020s Remake

The noise is all over the place. Nadine Lustre and Kathryn Bernardo have been fancasted as this generation’s Sylvia and Isabel, and the internet has an insatiable appetite for the possibility. Even Vilma Santos, who played Isabel, greenlit this tandem.

Lustre herself recently approved of the fancast, albeit mentioning that it would be challenging for her. Both Lustre and Bernardo have been affiliated with each other since their names went up the screens; aside from being half of the two most popular love teams in the Philippines, I thoroughly remember a time when Lustre was gaining more traction and a lot of people pointed out how similar she looks to Bernardo.

Photo from Nadine Lustre Global on Facebook

Both the actresses recently broke up with their respective other halves in their love teams, and fans just couldn’t wait for the girls to take on new projects that are distinct from their previous ones, given the marketability of KathNiel and JaDine. Bernardo has recently received her flowers after a stellar performance in A Very Good Girl, and truly, a lot of anticipators and I know that something will shift if T-Bird at Ako gets a remake starring the two actresses.

Photo from Preview PH

T-Bird at Ako (1982) was written by Portia Ilagan, an openly gay activist, and directed by Danny Zialcita. It was one of the earliest portrayals of queerness in Philippine cinema, and being starred by two of the biggest actresses at the time, it shook the entire nation. So why, pray tell, do we need a remake of this iconic piece of media?

Photo from IMDb

The 1982 film was made at a time when censorship was at an all-time high and conservative spaces were highly protected, preventing the LGBTQ+ from having anything for themselves – may it be films or even walking with their lovers in the streets without turning heads with a matching scowl. Given the time of the film’s making, we can only imagine the state of being of the country decades before the queer community has even seen the light of one of the slowest-moving bills, the SOGIE Bill. With that, it is apparent in the 1982 film how careful they had to be, ending with the two protagonists finally being in straight relationships.

Many people question why there has been a loud call for a remake, given its homophobic undertones. However, this is something the remake could alter to bring forward an inclusive narrative – the very reason why Portia Ilagan wrote the screenplay in the first place.

Photo from Letterboxd

It’s easily understood why the 1982 version had to be like that. It was the bleak reality of queers in earlier times. Even so, Zialcita’s T-Bird at Ako paved the way for more queer narratives to exist in media, and gave queers at the time the ability to see themselves on screen. I truly give my respect to the film. But moving forward, a 2020s remake could give the gays the canonical romance between the two women, and an ending that they deserve. At a relatively better time when a lot of people have opened themselves up to the idea of acceptance of our community, along with the rise and success of same-sex romantic films, the remake could potentially bring justice to the story of Sylvia and Isabel.

Aside from bringing restorative justice to the LGBTQ+ community, this being starred by Kathryn Bernardo and Nadine Lustre mirrors the casting of Vilma Santos and Nora Aunor in the 80s. Similarly, Santos and Aunor were the centerpieces of fan wars and misogynistic comments pitting them against each other, just as Bernardo and Lustre are in this generation. Santos and Aunor’s pairing was both a shock and a power move, and so will Bernardo and Lustre’s if we get their version of T-Bird at Ako.

Photo from Rotten Tomatoes

At 14, during the release of Baka Bukas (2017), it was nothing short of being my Roman Empire. The lack of queer representation in local media has been so glaring, especially narratives that tell stories about the LGBTQ+ community and how queer romance happens as naturally as anything else. We need this remake to happen.

In Defense of “A Very Good Girl”: A Film Review

In the renaissance of eat the rich films, it looks as though Star Cinema wants to write itself in the wet cement of something definitely for the history books. Reviews for A Very Good Girl – both from critics and local film buffs alike – date months back since the film’s release, and, well, they don’t look so well. After recently watching it, I started to think, “Am I the only one who actually likes this film?”

Photo from IMDb

Revenge plots are widespread in media, with the likes of Promising Young Woman (2020) taking us on a rollercoaster with the protagonist’s unfolding vengeance. This genre of film has always been a point of interest to many. While the whys establish a strong foundation of the protagonist’s thirst for retribution, ultimately being the center of discourse regarding social commentaries, films of this genre focus on the execution of steaming anger whose manifestation has been calculated for a very long time. It’s entertaining to watch, yes. However, many people claim that A Very Good Girl does not achieve what it’s trying to be. But I digress. A Very Good Girl is progress in Philippine mainstream cinema, touching on topics like class struggle and the interplay between morality and insanity in a bold and fun film with two of the biggest names in the entertainment industry.

A Very Good Girl snippet from Netflix Philippines

Before anything, a few concessions. I do think the film has something to say; perhaps it just didn’t know how to say it. Much of the criticism points out that its non-linear structure doesn’t work for a fast-paced film, and many of the flashbacks were overextended despite the backstory already being understood. The lack of consequences for loose ends, especially for the characters of Chie Filomeno and Jake Ejercito, was bothersome, leaving the audience to think, “How could they let her get away with this?” Perhaps it needed more of a display of how Mercy (Kathryn Bernardo’s character) is fallible, especially due to her working-class status to make the story more grounded.

Furthermore, the film has been called out for needing to figure out what it wants to be. It’s crazy and campy, and critics say it tries to be everything all at once. “It could have gone seriously dramatic, gone full camp, or gone really dark,” says one review. But a film does not have to be only one thing at a time. A similar discourse has revolved around Todd Hayne’s May December (2023), what with the whole camp versus melodrama debate on Twitter. A combination of genres can actually work, and in the case of A Very Good Girl, thematically and conceptually, the coexistence of camp resonates with the outworldliness of the character of Miss Dolly De Leon, Molly, and the drama is fit for the bleak nature of our overworked double-life protagonist, Mercy. The shifts in tone were necessary.

A Very Good Girl snippet from Netflix Philippines

Some critiques pointed out that the roles weren’t for Bernardo and de Leon, saying that the characters simply don’t fit their mold and strengths. But the previous typecasting of both of these actresses was precisely why they took these roles.

“I was looking forward to playing someone with agency, because that’s so different to most of the characters I’ve played in the past,” says De Leon, happily portraying her anti-hero role.

A Very Good Girl snippet from Netflix Philippines

Bernardo specifically asked for this role as it differs from the usual films we see her in. It was refreshing to see her in a major film without a man by her side, and my oh my, did she play the hell out of that character. Her performance as Mercy is definitely career-defining, taking on a role who, in a different world, is a stone-cold manipulating partner of Molly, and in another, is a broken proletariat who is just exhausted. The way she stares directly at the camera with her eyes filled with tears and rage is a masterclass. I would personally say both of the actresses truly mothered.

A Very Good Girl snippet from Netflix Philippines

But what exactly is the film trying to say? A very good point made by a critic was that the ending makes it seem like Mercy has the moral high ground for not acting out her vengeance, but at the same time, she actually doesn’t after irreversibly damaging so many people along the way. They mentioned that ultimately, the working class ought to bring justice to their very own hands in a system that actively prevents them. The film takes steps back in the final stage of Mercy’s justice, and I think it’s valid that people think the movie has failed in this sense. However, I don’t think the film is trying to tell its audience what the working class should do, nor did it say that Mercy’s commitment to being the very good girl she wants to be was the right thing to do. Instead, it shows how much grit it takes to carry out violence in exchange for violence, especially for the victims.

A Very Good Girl snippet from Netflix Philippines

In a perfect world, it wouldn’t be Mercy’s burden to deconstruct the impunity of the rich. She wouldn’t have to play nice to the woman who put her at the world’s edge despite her already being beneath it. But even in a world that necessitates all these things, at the end of everything, it is still the working class who can oftentimes afford to have Mercy™ as opposed to those who are so used to receiving everything on a silver plate. It is the working class who feel like they have to make concessions, and that being “good” will reward them at some point in life despite that being a total uncertainty. The working class has always been told to make peace with their reality. I view the ending as Mercy just taking her defeat as a win because she is no longer allowing herself to carry the weight of vengeance being her obligation. The film simply shows how the system tires out the poor so much in a way that they’re just too exhausted to do something about it.

You know what they say, “One’s faith can move mountains,” and Cebuanos are never afraid to showcase their faith in Sr. Sto. Niño. As one Cebu, let us profess our faith as we celebrate the 459th Fiesta Señor and Sinulog 2024.

LIST: Unlimited Chicken Wings Restaurants in Cebu (2024)

Filipinos are generally food lovers, and Cebuanos are apparently not an exemption. Within Metro Cebu, there are a lot of restaurants of almost any kind, from the all-time favorite street food and Filipino native dishes to the well-loved foreign cuisines such as Chinese, American, Japanese, etc. Certainly, Cebu has a vibrant food culture.

What’s more interesting is the immense growth of restaurants or eateries serving unlimited chicken wings. Your appetite is literally the limit — you can eat as many chicken wings as you can! Talk about value for your money, eh? Just make sure there’s no leftover as it comes with a price – usually P30-40 per (chicken) piece.

We’ve enlisted some of the most popular unlimited chicken wings restaurants in Metro Cebu. These restaurants may serve almost the same “flavors”, but each has surely an edge over the other.
