Is Watching Videos at 2x Speed Good or Bad?

In our current world where everything is fast-paced and instantaneous, we must keep up. 

If this is a competition, GenZs surely win. Imagine watching Netflix and TikTok videos at 2x speed. This is known as “speed watching,” commonly practiced by Gen Zs.

This method is not only applicable to binge-watching movies but also to watching recorded video lectures for school. 

This leaves us with the question, does speed watching compromise learning?

WHY BINGE-WATCH?

Simple. Gen Zs binge-watch to save time and consuming a plethora of media content in a shorter time creates a new level of binge-watching experience because they can manipulate the number of hours they wish to spend.

Based on a Teller Report, 40% of young audiences recently engaged with speed watching. This means that users can increase their watching speed. YouTube and other streaming platforms have already incorporated speed adjustment features that enable users to manipulate the speed of the media content they are consuming. 

SHORTER ATTENTION SPAN

Fast-forwarding videos are caused by people’s shorter attention spans. The National Center for Biotechnology Information said that the average attention span of people dropped from 12 seconds in 2000 to 8 seconds in 2013. The Technical University of Denmark researchers explained that this is caused by the insurmountable information that people need to focus on in a shorter amount of time, hence, making people lose the patience to consume information at a normal pace.

IS BINGE WATCHING BAD OR GOOD?

The nature of speed watching is decreasing the amount of time consumption for certain media outlets to make room for more media content.

Does the fact that this applies to video lectures for school mean that users are prioritizing quantity over quality?

A study conducted by UCLA Psychology Professors found that watching videos and lectures even at 2x speed still helps students retain sets of information in their brains.

In their findings, students who increase their video speed absorb the same details and information as those who watch video lectures at a normal speed. The advantage that the former has is the shorter amount of time they spend to absorb the information.

Oil Prices Set for Decrease in the Last Week of February

A rollback in pump prices is set for the last week of February with major oil companies like CleanFuel, Shell, and SeaOil announcing the news.

According to the industry leaders, impending adjustments on the prices were scheduled to take effect on Tuesday, February 27, 2024. Gasoline prices were said to have a substantial decrease of ₱0.95 per liter, kerosene by ₱1.10, while diesel prices are to have a drop of ₱0.70 for the same amount.

This gives relief to consumers grappling with recent fuel price hikes for the past two years. The increase in pump prices continued up until the previous week, with gasoline prices hiking by ₱1.60 per liter, kerosene rising by ₱1.05 per liter, and diesel prices by ₱1.10.

The adjustments coming from the major companies were set to take effect with the following schedule:

  • CleanFuel: 4:01 PM on Tuesday (February 27, 2024)
  • Shell: 6:00 AM on Tuesday (February 27, 2024)
  • SeaOil: 6:00 AM on Tuesday (February 27, 2024)

Other oil companies are still yet to announce their price adjustments, but with three leading brands applying the recent modification, this sets a potential respite for drivers for the time being.

Palarong Pambansa on DepEd’s Announcement of New Academic Calendar

The pandemic has greatly shifted many of our lives and everything revolving around it. One of the most formidable changes it has resulted in is the education in our country. Not only was the online setting the only thing new it brought upon, but a change in the academic calendar as well.

If you haven’t gotten the memo yet, DepEd scheduled the start of classes for the school year 2024-2025 on July 29. Signed by Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte, DepEd Order No. 003 series of 2024 pushes back the end of the school year from June 14 to May 31. 

The shift in academic calendar was deemed necessary to respond to concerns regarding the intense heat during the summer months. Furthermore, DepEd 7 Director Jimenez also announced in addition to the changes in the academic landscape that the upcoming school year 2024-2025 will end by May 16, 2025.

This may seemingly cause some sort of conflict regarding graduating students who are to participate in the Palarong Pambansa, but Palaro is proactive in alleviating the competitors’ worries.

The eligibility of graduating students is not at all a problem. Department of Education Central Visayas (DepEd 7) Director Salustiano Jimenez recently confirmed that as long as the competitors adhere to the age restrictions, they can still compete from July 9 to July 16 in the national sporting event.

Yes, Andrea Sachs, Emily Charlton, and EIC-excellency herself, Miranda Priestly reunited at the 2024 SAG Awards, almost two decades after the release of one of the most culturally-defining films of all time, The Devil Wears Prada.

The iconic trio graced the 2024 SAG Awards stage together for a brief yet iconic moment to present the award for Male Actor in a Comedy Series. Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt gagged everyone in the room with their reunion, humorously referencing the film in a sketch.

Hathaway and Blunt interacted with Streep with the same amount of delicacy, awkwardness, and fear as their characters did, with the two handing Streep the card and her glasses.
