Yakitori Binchotan opens its first branch at Lightsite Parc along AS Mandaue Street in Cebu City.

The new restaurant is set to bring life to diners’ tables with original dishes enjoyed in Hokkaido, Japan’s culinary center.

Gerry’s group has partnered with the original owners of Yakitori Binchotan – Chefs Yoshi Ishise, Tomio Hakada and Nori Suzuki for the new venture.

The same team is also behind the success of Ramen Sora, a noodle house, located beside Yakitori. Basically, you choose a noodle soup from Ramen Sora and pair them with grilled items from Yakitori Binchotan, and you have a complete Hokkaido experience.

Yakitori isn’t as simple as putting meat or vegetable on a stick and grilling them. They use a secret sauce, and grilled using Binchotan, a special kind of charcoal found only in Japan that brings out the taste of the skewered delight, usually chicken.

According to one of its chefs, there is so much discipline required in preparing this dish. The smell, the aroma of skewered dishes, and ultimately the taste makes all the difference.

If you are looking for an authentic Japanese food experience, then it’s a MUST to try out Yakitori Binchotan and Ramen Sora. Undeniably delicious food and great ambiance!

More power, less fuel that is the blue core technology promise.Yamaha has done it again, having an edge against its competitors. They managed to create a stronger, lighter and fuel-efficient engine – the BLUECORE technology which is equipped in their latest automatics, the Mio i125 and the Mio Soul i125.

IMPROVED COMBUSTION EFFICIENCY

-Valve timing and valve shape tube flow effect has been optimized for more power and less fuel waste.

REDUCED MECHANICAL LOSS

IMPROVED COOLING EFFICIENCY

-DiASil Cylinder, oil jet piston cooler, Compact high-efficiency cooling fan, new shroud shape and Tin cooling. This means that the engine will likely NOT produce a great amount of waste heat (the heat you feel from the engine).

IMPROVED DRIVE-FORCE EFFICIENCY

– Primary and secondary sheaves with lower thrust force design, low idling RPM (at engine start, speed increase and decrease), and a smooth feeling during the whole ride!

When riding the Mio i125, you will less likely feel the engine vibration and will have a very smooth and easy ride with a very pocket friendly consumption of 1L=60-70km. The Hidden Gem: Banilad Sports Club

“A HIDDEN GEM” was my answer when asked about what I can say about Banilad Sports Club. Funny this may seem but if by any chance that you can visit the aforementioned sports club, you’ll know what I mean.

_DSC0234

Banilad Sports Club, formerly known as Sandtrap started in 1997. It started with a small building and just a few people working for it. However, the owners would have been really good in running the business because just after 5 years, they had a swimming pool and a tennis court already. The owners are currently a Canadian (Newfie) and a British and are married to local women. Both have been here for over 25 years. Shocked? You shouldn’t be. IMPRESSED, that’s the better word.

Last 2014, the place changed its name and owners this is why it is now called Banilad Sports Club. I’m just glad they have it changed because, it now sounds so homey. But, I tell you. It just doesn’t sound homey because it feels homey. When you’re in BSC, it’s like you are in a home away from home. And, I ain’t kidding about it. It really feels like home.

_DSC0232

Banilad Sports Club is really a great recreational spot hidden in Paseo Saturnino, Banilad. One of the reasons why I said, “A hidden gem.” But wait guys! I know you’re thinking of additional expense, memberships, and whatnot. Well, tell you what? This sports & leisure complex is a membership-free sports complex. BSC is surely a perfect place for relaxation, fitness, and entertainment not just for the foreigners but, even the locals.

_DSC0237

BSC is known for their al fresco dining experience. Well, for the food aficionados or to those who just wish to escape the scorching heat from the Queen City of the South’s weather. But, don’t worry! Dining in BSC will not break your bank. Their food is really affordable and you will forget what you paid for after tasting their sumptuous meals. I’m not kidding about their food. It really tastes so good that you’ll forget your name after tasting it. Moreover, they also offer group meal packages for us, their guests, to have a wide variety of menus to choose from.

_DSC0223

Wait up! Their offers don’t end there! Banilad Sports Club can also hold your birthday parties and any other special events. They have a real spacious reception area for such events so you need not to worry about it. PLUS! They have a free Wi-Fi connection for us to stay connected with our loved ones though we’re at home away from home. Seriously, I can live in such place. It’s a haven.

But, I can’t end this post without having to commend their staff. The staff are really accomodating which is really important for me. I wish to commendone everyone for being so nice and for being able to provide an A+ Customer Service. This is really what struck me most. It’s really like living with your loved ones.

Banilad Sports Club is open from Monday to Sunday, 8:00AM-11:00PM. For more info, you may call 343-8621 or 344-0063. You may also visit their official FB
page at Banilad Sports Club.

If you wish to really know as to why I have answered “A HIDDEN GEM,” I suggest you pack your bags, and visit your second home in Banilad Sports Club. Immediately after reading this post.

Mrs. Asia International 2015, Jennifer Helen Weigel

0

I held my breath when the doors of the Cervantes and Sancho Panza Function Room in Casino Español de Cebu opened. Applause from the media people, and murmurs like: “Gwapa man jud diay siya oy” and “Gwapa jud siya noh?” were just some of the praises I’ve heard when she walked in. I just sat properly and locked my eyes to the lady wearing such sparkly crown. But wait, it was not the crown that I first noticed. It was the aura of the function room that changed. The aura of this specific lady is really just so mesmerizing.

Ladies and gentlemen, I am talking about the newly crowned Mrs. Asia International 2015. And, she is no other than the proud mom of three (3), Jennifer Helen Weigel. A lady with class and such great finesse is how I define her. A lady with class who walks with elegance and sits like a queen but, talks like a lawyer. Yes, you just read it right. She is fierce and fearless and that’s what made me admire her more. Per her; “I just want to be honest. I am frank.” And, wouldn’t we want someone who’d be an epitome of honesty? Well, Mrs. Weigel is surely a beauty queen to be admired.

jennifer-weigel-2

Mrs. Jennifer Helen D. Weigel just made a history after being crowned as Classic Mrs. Asia International Metropolitan 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last 13th of June, 2015 at Galaxy Hall – HGH Convention. She won the Best in National Costume designed by her fellow Cebuano, Philipp Tampus and is now the Classic Mrs. Asia International 2015 Ambassador. Aside from the National Costume, she also walked with such poise and grace in the evening gown competition. She wore an intricate gown designed by another Cebuano, Cary Santiago.

jennifer-weigel-1

She surely did such great job. So when we were given the chance to ask questions, I didn’t think twice. I raised my hand and asked the first question. As a matter of fact, I had goosebumps when she answered my question (After winning Mrs. Asia International 2015, what’s next for Mrs. Jennifer Helen Weigel?) with; “I just want to focus with my family first. I have 3 kids and I need to focus to them.” Surely not defeating the purpose of being called a MRS. and a mom.

Throughout the Press Conference, I have always heard her say: “The competition was tough,” “It was my first time to join a pageant,” and “I didn’t really want to join at first.” But, look at where she is right now. From that shy lady (per her), to this renowned beauty queen and is already a master of her craft. What more could she ask for, right? Yes, she can really the NA SA’YO NA ANG LAHAT kind of lady but, when I asked her what has changed? She said: “Nothing.” That word was the only thing she uttered when asked and answered without any hesitation. She surely knows how to keep herself grounded.

And though she already made a name for herself since she has been a Best Dressed for the Philippines, she still considers herself as an individual. She never let these achievements cloud her mind and keeps her feet on the ground. So to those aspiring beauty queens out there but are too shy to at the least try, these are the words from Mrs. Jennifer Helen D. Weigel herself: “Believe in yourself. Trust in God. Be strong because you can do it!”

Flavors of the street : “Siomai tag tres”

For sure you have noticed someone on a bike with a sidecart and umbrella. They are the beacon of hope to those who are on a tight budget and want to eat tasty food and satisfy their cravings. We call them “siomai tag tres” — a phrase which means they are selling siomai for three pesos only.

PTDC0768

However, there are unpleasing rumors going around for some time now that they are using meat extenders which explains why they are cheap. The worst rumor I even heard is, they are using CAT meat! Woah!Cat meat?! Seriously?!

PTDC0767
But here’s a trivia. The real reason why they sell siomai’s so cheap is because they put grind sayote more than pork. So this means you are eating 95% veggies and 5% pork perhaps? I’m not very sure. But even with this ratio, siomai’s on the street don’t really taste less nor taste bad. Try and be satisfied!

Another trivia — siomai’s are best paired with puso or hanging rice and cold softdrinks. Very satisfying!

Flavors of the street : “Pungko Pungko”

PTDC0029

The greatest hurdle of someone who is trying to save money is on how to cut down his expenses. Well, eating is the top consumer of your allowance! It’s really hard to resist food especially those that are freshly cooked. You could even taste it just by looking at it!

Reality is, you can’t save if you give in to temptation! Hey, I’m not saying you should starve yourself just to save up. What I’m implying here is that, you could save money while making your stomach full! I know. I know you’re thinking, “He’s nuts! How could we spend less while making our stomachs full?” But don’t judge me just yet because, you’ll be amazed after this!

PTDC0018

PUNGKO PUNGKO.. Pungko, which means “to sit”, is the top grossing food source. Not only do they sell very affordable food, they are also very tasty. Imagine just by bringing rice from the house, you can then enjoy fresh, crispy and tasty food! And could enjoy these for less! You could save up to 50 pesos or even more! But choose wisely because there are some pungko pungko vendors who make their viands much expensive than the regular pricing.

Untitled-2

NOTE: Before eating, make sure you have a strong stomach. There are some who are more sensitive than that of the others and can’t tolerate these kinds of food and look at the vendor if he’s neat enough.

Kadaugan sa Mactan Festival

mactan-shrine

One of the biggest festivals in Cebu next to the mother of all festivals “Sinulog”, the “Kadaugan Sa Mactan Festival” is an annual festival celebrated every 27th of April at the Mactan Shrine in Mactan Island, Cebu to commemorate the historical Battle of Mactan between the city’s hero Lapu-Lapu with the men of Mactan and Magellan with the Spanish soldiers.

battle-of-mactan

On the morning of April 27, 1521, Magellan and a larger force returned to Mactan to end the revolt.Lapu-Lapu and the men of Mactan, armed with spears, and kampilan, faced Spanish soldiers led by Magellan wearing armor from his head to his knees. Magellan and a number of his men were killed, and the Spanish ships promptly left for good.

Lapu-Lapu was the king of Mactan, who is known as the first native of the archipelago to have resisted Spanish colonization. He is now regarded as the first Filipino hero. Lapu-Lapu is remembered for thwarting a Spanish invasion of his island and causing the death of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, in what would later be known as the Battle of Mactan.

The Kadaugan sa Mactan Festival is held on the month of April with street dancing and the mouth-watering Food Festival. Several hotels and restaurants represented themselves and offered fine foods for a cheap price.

The Festival ends with the remake of the Battle of Mactan on April 27 in the early morning hours. The view at 5.30 am was truly memorable and remarkable. KadaugansaMactan has indeed transported us back in time that every Cebuano should experience.
