Meet: Cebuano Motic Panugalinog, 3-Time Skating Champion in Kasikas Festival 2022

Skating is definitely one of the growing sports in the Philippines, especially in Cebu. With figures like Margie Didal participating in the recent Olympics as the first Filipina to join the skating sport in the prestigious event, the Filipino youth’s interest in skating has considerably sparked.

With locals such as Motic Panugalinog making names for themselves in this sport, it is indeed a great time to be alive if you are a skating enthusiast.

Motic Panugalinog recently won three skateboarding events in the recently concluded Kasikas Festival which took place last January 15, 2022 at the Veterans Park. Panugalinog managed to best other skating competitors in the event, which ended him bagging three skateboarding championship titles.

Hailing from Inayawan, Cebu, Motic Panugalinog is a local skating star, featured primarily in the SG4L TV vlog channel. Motic posts skating videos of him, showing off tricks together with other skaters. Motic was also known as the winner of last year’s Mind the Gap challenge, which was sponsored by Red Bull Philippines, a popular energy drink. Last year was the first ever event of its kind, and Motic managed to bag the top award.

Like most skating legends, the rookie Cebuano started in the streets honing his skating skills. Skating nonstop and posting videos online with his skating prowess, it was only a matter of time that Motic caught the attention of those who wanted to sponsor his skating career. This included Zero Skateboards, a prestigious skating company based in the US.

Now Motic, continues to practice his skating skills. Time will only tell if will be participating in further competitions, local and international.

Filipinos need to earn at least P110,000 a month to be happy: Study

1

They say you can’t buy happiness – but money can help prevent you from being unhappy.

A study by Texas-based firm Expensivity suggests there’s a “price of happiness in every country.” If you’re a Filipino living in the Philippines, the study says you will need to earn at least P110,000 per month that will somehow help stop you from becoming unhappy.

A reliable, comfortable income salves your worries and just makes life easier. Poverty is stressful and leaves long-term damage. The illusion that wealth is meritocratic deprives low-earners of their self-esteem. This is why the money it takes to make you happy can be counted in the tens-of-thousands, rather than the millions.

To identify the estimated amount per country, Expensivity converted the ‘happiness premium’ for every country on the planet using World Bank’s Purchasing Power Ratios. Then they factored in the local cost of living to figure out how much happiness varies by country.

10 Countries Highest and Lowest Price of Happiness

Highest Price of Happiness
Lowest Price of Happiness

While the Philippines is not among the top 10 countries with either the highest or lowest happiness prices, we are on the lower end of the global scale. The ‘happiness premium’ of Filipinos is said to stand at $28,264 annually. That’s around PHP 1.37 million a year or PHP 114,167 per month.

Check out ‘Price of Happiness’ in the Philippines and the rest of Asia and Oceania:

The Philippines stands at $28,264 (PHP 1.37 million a year)

Expensivity said that while money is not everything, if your environment is right, then having enough of it gives you the cushion “to build a masterplan for being happy into your routine.”

What do you think of this study? Do you consider happy whether or not you earn as much as the study’s amount suggests?

Manny Villar, Pastor Quiboloy and Others acquire ABS-CBN Frequencies

0

More than two years since one of the country’s biggest broadcasting and media giant ABS-CBN was forced to go off-air, former senator and billionaire Manny Villar will be taking over its frequencies, as confirmed by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) last January 25. This included the Channel 2, which was the main channel for ABS-CBN’s for free TV.

Advanced Media Broadcasting System (AMBS), the real estate tycoon’s own media company has been granted provisional authority to operate Channel 16, which was ABS-CBN’s digital TV frequency.

With this provisional authority, the NTC also issued a temporary permit “for simulcast purposes” over the analog Channel 2, effective January 6 until the analog shutoff in 2023.

“The temporary assignment was granted to ensure service to both analog and digital TV signal users as the country transitions to full digital TV,” said the commission.

The commission also added that AMBS “was the first applicant for an authority to install, operate, and maintain a digital TV in Metro Manila,” with its application filed over 15 years ago or on October 5, 2006.

“AMBS has been waiting for an available digital TV frequency since 2006 and has been undergoing a quasi-judicial process which includes notice to all interested/affected parties and hearing,” said the NTC.

Pasto Apollo Quiboloy, the controversial leader of Kingdom of Jesus Christ, was also one of the figures awarded with ABS-CBN’s frequencies.

His Sonshine Media Network International (SMNI) under Swara Sug Media Corp. was awarded the Channel 43 while the PA for Channel 23 was given to Aliw Broadcasting Corp, which currently operates the Home Radio and DWIZ.

Both the prominent figures, Quiboloy and Villar, are known to be allies with President Duterte. NTC Deputy Commissioner Edgardo Cabarrios defended accusations of a ‘midnight deal’ was struck between the parties.

Last May 2020, ABS-CBN’s franchise expired, and the non-renewal of its franchise as ordered by President Rodrigo Duterte led to the shutting down of its operations, including free radio and TV. This was followed by the House, which included Villar’s own daughter, Las Piñas City Representative Camille Villar, to reject its appeal for renewal last July 2020.

Various media groups and rights advocates have criticized the administration’s shutting down of the media giant, tagging the move as an affront to press freedom.

WHO reports new version of Omicron Variant “BA.2”

The Omicron variant truly have spread all around the world like we thought it would and we are now just getting back up from its effect but a new version of it is being observed yet again.

The World Health Organization have reported on January 24 that a new version of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 is “increasing in many countries”. The organization further states that it urges researchers to investigate whether this latest strain poses any new threats to the current state of the pandemic.

Photo from Unsplash

The new version is known as BA.2, this name comes from of the Omicron variant which was named BA.1. As a descendant of Omicron, it has some differences in some of its mutations—including ones on the spike protein—than BA.1.

It has been detected in many countries like India, Denmark, Britain, and many others. Though in Europe, it appears the most widespread in Denmark.

Photo from Unsplash

BA. 2 is now getting close attention as little is known about it yet and if this child of omicron is more advanced than the original omicron characteristic of evading preexisting immunity from vaccines and other variants exposure.

“Variants have come, variants have gone. I don’t think there’s any reason to think this one is a whole lot worse than the current version of omicron.”- Robert Garry, a virologist at Tulane University School of Medicine.

Indeed it is a new version but there is still no data that suggests whether or not BA.2 is worse than Omicron in terms of transmissibility or any other type of advantage so continued monitoring will be done.

Top 5 Lucky Food to prepare this Chinese New Year 2022

2

We Filipinos eagerly celebrate the new year twice. The Chinese culture has been intertwined with ours too deep that this is our normal.

The Year of the Water Tiger approaches and it’s time to prepare our tables for its welcome feast.

Photo from Unsplash

A feast that would symbolize all our hopes and wishes for 2022. Don’t know what to prepare? Worry not for we have here a list of the most important food to prepare to bring in all the luck and blessings.

1. Tikoy/ Glutinous rice cake

“Getting higher year-after-year by year”

Tikoy is the most popular treat for the Chinese New Year in the Philippines and even on regular days, this treat is a favorite snack for us Cebuanos. It is made from sticky or glutinous rice and even has a variety of flavors from the original white tikoy to green pandan and purple ube. It is believed that Tikoy will bring you higher, more prosperous on your business and a general improvement in life.

2. Fish

“May you always have more than you need!”

A whole fish in your tables will bless you with more than what you need.  In Chinese, “fish” sounds like ‘surplus’ or extra. It’s the belief of having managed to save something at the end of the year that will continue into being able to make more in the next year.

3. Spring Rolls

“A ton of gold, Wealth”

Spring rolls are a staple on our tables as well especially during a dine-in dim sum.  Preparing these cylindrical-shaped rolls filled with vegetables and meat is a wish for prosperity. This is because fried spring rolls look like gold bars given their golden-yellow color.

4. Noodles/Pancit

“Happiness and Longevity”

This comes as a no shock for noodles and pancit always symbolizes a wish for longevity. To live long, one must not cut them during preparation. Though noodles with broth are also prepared, the two favorite noodle dishes during the Chinese New Year in the Philippines are the all-time favorites pancit bihon and pancit canton.

5. Tangerine/Orange- Fullness and Wealth

Round and “golden” fruits like tangerines and oranges symbolizes fullness and wealth. Eating and displaying these fruits is believed to bring good luck and fortune and surprisingly this is due to their pronunciation, and writing. In Chinese, orange and tangerine sounds the same as the Chinese for ‘success’ and writing tangerine contains the Chinese character for luck.

Preparing and wishing for luck is not really a sure thing but there is no harm in trying and you get to indulge in all delicious food anyway so it’s already a win.

Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia also announced on Friday that it will start accepting arriving fully vaccinated overseas Filipinos and foreign nationals on February 1, 2022. The memorandum also lifts the facility quarantine requirement.

Tourism is one of the badly hit industries caused by the global pandemic and continues to struggle after two years due to travel restrictions. Worse, many areas in the Visayas and Mindanao region were devastated by Typhoon Odette last December 16, 2021 and damaged many tourism-related establishments.

The tourism industry can now recover and it can contribute big to jobs, livelihoods and the country’s economic growth

Presidential spokesman Karlo Nograles said in a press briefing

Approved on January 27, the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) Resolution 159 suggests acceptance of visa-free travel for short visits from 157 countries with lighter requirements.
