DIY Guide: How to make Filipino Comfort food Taho at home

“Taho! Taho! Taho!”

Whoever hasn’t heard this? Almost every Filipino has and we especially associate it to our childhood.

Photo from Soy Bueno Taho Facebook Page

Taho is one of Filipino’s favorite comfort food, especially for breakfast and for kids. We would go running the moment we hear “taho!”. It’s warm and not overly sweet complete with its very soft tofu and fun tapioca pearls.

It is said that taho from China during the Han Dynasty and was brought here in the Philippines by Chinese migrants.

It is a street food originally made from soya beans (traditional making) but we are too lazy and time constrained to do it so there is an easy shortcut recipe that can be done at home using “softened tofu or silken tofu”.

Homemade Taho (DIY Recipe)

Ingredients:

  • 700 grams soft tofu (silken tofu)
  • 1 + ¼ cup dark brown sugar (divided); light brown sugar for lighter syrup
  • 3/4 cup uncooked tapioca pearls
  • 6 + ½ cups water, (divided)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla essence
Photo from Unsplash

Procedure:

For the Tapioca Pearls:

  1. Boil 6 cups of water in a cooking pot
  2. Add-in the tapioca pearls and leave it for 30-40 mins in medium heat (or until cooked)
  3. Add 1/4 cup sugar and mix it well.
  4. Remove tapioca pearls from heat and let it stand and cool in the pot for 30 mins
  5. After that, drain the water.

For Arnibal/Sweet Syrup:

  1. Boil 1/2 cup of water in a saucepan.
  2. Put-in 1 cup of sugar and mix well.
  3. Add vanilla and simmer until it becomes thick.
  4. Set aside the sweet syrup/arnibal.

For the Taho:

  1. Heat the extra soft tofu in a microwave oven for a minute or just steam it.
  2. Remove it from the microwave oven/steamer once hot.

When everything is cooked and done, you can now assemble all of it. Add-in the cooked tapioca pearls and arnibal/sweet syrup to the soft tofu and serve it warm as we like it.

Intense solar flares hit Earth, more coming: Solar physicists warn

The sun has always been our friend but it is also one of the most dangerous things in space for us and right now it’s been acting out with solar flares and solar physicists has reason to believe that there will be more that will be Earthward bound.

Photo from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory

Last April 20, between 9 am and 10.30 am, an intense solar flare (X2 class) has hit Earth and affected India and large parts of Southeast Asia and since the Philippines is also a Southeast Asian Country, we were affected too.

Solar flares are massive bursts of electromagnetic radiation emerging from the Sun’s surface. These flares are the result of changes in magnetic fields on the sunspots (the darker areas on the solar surface) that lead to a massive explosion.

Now, solar physicists are warning us that the Sun may continue to send strong flares on the coming days as a large sunspot is most likely to face Earthwards soon.

Possible effects of solar flares

Not all solar flares are harmful but Earth-bound flares can:

  • They can interfere with telecommunication and GPS-based services
  • It can hit satellite and space station operations (especially the sunlight side)
  • High frequency radio signals can be completely lost or rendered of poor quality

According to the latest forecast by the Space Weather Prediction Centre at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) last April 20, there are at least two large sunspots that have significant potential to emit flares for the next three days.

Photo from NASA/SDO

They are identified as:

  • 2993
  • 2994

Solar flares do not have any evidence or measurable influence of affecting earth’s temperature though so the heat wave we are experiencing may have nothing to do about these flares.

Nevertheless, we should be aware of what is going on in our surroundings and on space.

Guide: How to access the Comelec Precinct Finder online

A few weeks to go before election day, registered voters can now check their actual polling precincts.

For the first time since 2016, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) made the Precinct Finder available to the public on Friday.

Filipinos can now check the specifics of their voter registration records at https://voterverifier.comelec.gov.ph/voter_precinct.

Voters are asked to provide information such as whether they are local or foreign voters, their first, middle, and last names, and their registration location (province, city/municipality).

The Comelec has teamed up with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to host the former’s multiple online systems, including the Precinct Finder, that are critical to the next elections.

Among other things, the polling body’s website was defaced in 2016. Some features, such as the Precinct Finder, Video Demonstrations, and the Search function, were affected.

Meanwhile, Comelec Commissioner George Garcia stated that the preparations for the May 9 elections are on track.
