Rare monkeypox virus 2022 outbreak causes global concern

It seems like there is another virus that we should be looking out for as the rare and unusual monkeypox which was first discovered in 1958 had another outbreak for 2022.

Monkeypox first occurred in colonies of research monkeys hence the name and the disease is often found in Central and West Africa.

According to the World Health Organization website, in May 2022, multiple cases of monkeypox were identified in several non-endemic countries which means that it is having an outbreak in countries that the disease isn’t regularly found.

Monkeypox cases are now being investigated in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and Australia, as well as new cases in France, Italy, Sweden, Spain and Portugal.

The sudden surge of cases has prompted concern from public health professionals around the world. On Wednesday, the World said it was sending

“Monkeypox usually does not occur globally,” Dr. Anne W. Rimoin, a professor of epidemiology at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health said and further described it as a “rare and unusual occurrence.”

According to WHO transmission occurs:

  • Animal-to-human through direct contact with blood, fluids and lesions
  • Human-to-human is less common through large respiratory secretions, skin lesions
  • The virus can also spread through contaminated materials

The main disease carrier of monkeypox is still unknown, although some experts suspect African rodents play a part in transmission, the CDC said.

Signs and symptoms of monkeypox

  • Invasion period (0-5 days)

You’ll experience flu-like symptoms like fever, headache and have swollen lymph nodes. Also there is back pain, aching muscles, extreme lack of energy.

  • Skin eruption/rash (within 1-3 days of fever)

A rash can develop mostly concentrated on the face, soles of the feet, oral mucous membrane and on genitals, and the lesions will progress from a flat base to filled with clear fluid to yellowish fluid same with regular small pox.

Painful and itchy they will eventually become scabs and fall off. Its symptoms will last for 2-4 weeks.

Vaccine for monkeypox

With it being an old virus, a vaccine developed against smallpox has already been approved for monkeypox, and several anti-virals are also effective.

Although most people recover from the virus, it can be dangerous and fatal in some cases according to experts.

Cebuana Working Student in USA graduates summa cum laude

Wynell Omaña Morga, 22, is set to graduate with flying colors as summa cum laude with a degree in accountancy at Kean University in New Jersey, USA. With the graduation ceremony scheduled on May 19, 2022, Morga will receive the university’s highest academic honor.

Photo from Nell Omaña Morga

“It was very unexpected, but it’s my ultimate goal. I just tried my best so that regardless of what the results were, I had no regrets,”

said Morga to SunStar Cebu

Aside from Morga’s stellar academic performance, she managed to do all these all while being a working student. Working an average of eight hours per day on weekdays and 12 hours per day on weekends as a food service worker at Roosevelt Care Center, Morga simultaneously burned the midnight oil as well by enrolling herself as a full-time college student at Kean University.

“I paid for my tuition fees and books so I had to ensure that I had enough work hours to afford my bills. To do so, I had to stack my classes on certain days and make sure that I had days off on the weekdays. These days off and the weekends were basically my workdays. I worked 12-hour shifts and then I would do my school work as soon as I got home,”

Photo from Kean University Official Website

All her efforts wouldn’t be put into waste as Morga will be earning a degree of Bachelor of Science in Accountancy minor in Finance as a Summa Cum Laude, and was even one semester ahead of her batchmates.

While still in Cebu, Morga completed 10th grade at the University of Cebu Main Campus where after graduating, her family decided to move in New Jersey. Morga then enrolled John F. Kennedy Memorial High School to complete her senior high school studies.

She also admitted that being a foreigner was difficult at first, how much more being a working student. But Morga found company in the form of new-found friends that helped her adjust to her new life in the US.

“Meeting new friends and getting to know more people was definitely the main thing that helped me adjust. They taught me how things work which is also why culture shock wasn’t really an issue for me,”

Morga also said that her graduating with flying colors is “a dedication for her family” who fully supported her while attending college.

Currently, Morga plans to take up a master’s degree in Accountancy and take the Certified Public Accountant licensure exam in the US this year. Speaking of jobs, Morga has considered a full-time offer from 1-800Accountant, the accounting firm where she interned.

2022 PhilHealth Contributions increase up to P3,200 per month

We might have to rethink our budget for this year as one of our adulting responsibilities is catching up to us again.

Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth), who implements universal health coverage in the Philippines just recently released an advisory that the premium rate of direct contributors has yet again increase to 4%.

Photo from PhilHealth Official Website

This increase to 4% was effective last January 2022 but will start to reflect on Electronic Premium Remittance System (EPRS) and the PhilHealth Member Portal starting June 2022. This means that members who have already paid their payments for the first 5 months of 2022, Jan-May, will have to settle the 1% until December 31, 2022 without interest.

Though a burden, this increase is based on the Universal Health Care (UHC) Act or also known as RA11223, that states that the premium rates “will gradually increase” by 0.5 percent every year. It started in 2019 at 2.75 percent until it reaches the five-percent limit by 2024 and 2025. It should also be noted that the increase was suspended in 2021 because of the pandemic.

The new monthly Philhealth contribution by each individual was shared by PhilHealth Senior Manager for Formal Sector-member Management Group Rex Paul Recoter in a forum on Wednesday, May 4.

This was also based on the PhilHealth Circular No. 2020-0005 on the “Premium Contribution Schedule in the National Health Insurance Program (Revision 1) which states that all direct contributors are advised that the premium rate for CY 2022 is 4.0%. The income floor would be P10,000 and income ceiling is P80,000.

It is already here so we need to adjust accordingly, we will just hope that this increase will also increase the quality of our health benefits.

Yakult to build new plant to expand production in Visayas and Mindanao

Who doesn’t know the nostalgic drink that is yakult? It is the original probiotic drink from our childhood to now.

Photo from Unsplash

It has persisted through the test of times and now has plans of staying around for a long time particularly in Visayas and Mindanao as they had their groundbreaking ceremony for their new plant in Misamis Oriental, Yakult El Salvador (Y.E.S).

A little trivia, Yakult is a Japanese sweetened probiotic milk beverage fermented with a bacteria strain. Its main ingredients are water, sugar, skim milk powder, glucose, flavors, and the most important one and what the company prides in is its 8 billion live Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota (LcS)  that is scientifically proven to help boost the immune system.

The new plant, Yakult El Salvador’s groundbreaking was headed by Mr. Alberto R. Dy Sun President of Yakult Philippines Inc, together with Mayor Edgar Lignes of El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental.

It was held at Barangay Quibonbon, El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental, Mindanao in full force as it was also attended by the executives of Yakult Philippines Inc. and CCT constructors Corporation.

Set to rise on a 4.2-hectare property, the new plant project started back in 2021. It is no small thing indeed as it already considered to be larger than the plant located in Calamba, Laguna.

Yakult Philippines have been a part of the Filipino culture already and part of the society as a day before the groundbreaking, they gave back to the environment with a tree-planting activity in partnership with the local government of El Salvador City.

This activity is part of the company’s initiatives under its environmental commitment and corporate promise. The treeplanting was done at the Tuburan Spring Ecopark located in Zone 3, Poblacion.

Spain will offer three days of menstrual leave every month

Menstrual periods aren’t pretty and definitely isn’t easy.

Women suffer from cramps, low back pain, nausea, vomiting, fatigue and that’s just some of it. Other women suffer a great deal more and would go to a mind-numbing level of pain that would just make them immobile and can do nothing but lay down.

Photo from Unsplash

It is a struggle that women have carried for years and its time that the world prioritizes the need for consideration on this.

And Spain might be the more of the progressive thinker in the Western Nations as it is the first from the group to offer menstrual leave as part of a set of proposals around reproductive health on the country.

The law offering three days a month of menstrual leave is already set to be approved. Workers who experience severe period pain will be able to rest on those three days of menstrual leave every month.

The reform bill and has these in the proposal:

  • 3-day menstrual leave
  • Educational institutions must provide feminine hygiene products when necessary
  • Women who are more likely to experience “menstrual poverty,” as well as those in prison, will also be given access to feminine hygiene products
  • scrap a sales levy on these products

There was a study in the Netherlands published in 2019 of nearly 43,000 women on period pain and it was found that 85% experienced painful periods (dysmenorrhea). It’s a global problem being addressed indeed.

(when the problem of severe period pain) “cannot be solved medically, we believe that it is very sensible that there is a temporary disability associated with this issue.”

– ANGELA RODRIGUEZ, SPAIN’S SECRETARY OF STATE FOR EQUALITY AND AGAINST GENDER VIOLENCE

Spain might not be the first but them addressing this issue will help others to see the importance of this law. Hopefully, in the future, the Philippines will have this as well.
