It seems like everyone has been waiting for this ever since the president announced the Philippines under the state of calamity.

Yes, the Php 100 billion emergency subsidy has started being disbursed to the different regions of the country last April 3, 2020.

Under the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) supervision, this cash aid will be distributed to 18 million poor families in hopes of alleviating the burden that the enhanced community quarantine has brought amid the corona virus outbreak.

“The DSWD will exercise full control and supervision over the distribution of Emergency Subsidy Program funds. This will ensure that only targeted beneficiary-families will receive the government subsidies,”

– Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles

They further stated that LGU personnel being managed by DILG will assist in the distribution of subsidies along with the assistance of the AFP and PNP.

Low income families will receive from P5,000 to P8,000 a month for two months in light of the novel coronavirus pandemic, under the social amelioration program. This is according to the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act.

This emergency subsidy will be added on top of existing conditional cash transfers of up to a maximum of P8,000 per month.

The DSWD will assess the level of need for each household through the social amelioration card (SAC) form . To avail of the social amelioration program, households have to register with this form which the local government units (LGUs) are to distribute on a “house to house” basis.

Super Pink Moon, the Biggest & Brightest of 2020, to be visible in Cebu on April 8

1
super pink moon cebu-1

Yes, there’s something to look forward to brighten up the “dark times” amid crisis.

On April 8, 2020 (Wednesday) at 10:30PM (peak at 100% illumination), we will witness April’s most beautiful Super Pink Moon, also expected to be this year’s biggest and brightest full moon.

The Super Pink Moon will already be visible after sunset and reach peak illumination at 10:35PM (Philippine time). But once the super moon rises above the horizon, it will be really bright and white, and almost impossible to look at for more than just a minute.

However, the Super Pink Moon won’t actually appear to be pink (nor any hue of it). The color will be the usual golden near the horizon and fade to a bright white as it glides overhead. It’s called “pink” because it’s a seasonal association that’s named after the pink moss phlox that covers the ground during spring.

Pink moss phlox

If you are on home quarantine, or wherever you may be, be sure to set your alarms on April 8, 2020 (Wednesday) at 10:35PM (but already starts appearing after sunset) because the Pink Super Moon will surely brighten up your mood and give us hope that things will get back to normal very soon.

School in Argao develops Contact Tracing App for Healthworkers

In light of the increasing number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines, extra efforts are being exerted to potentially track and predict the progress, not just the confirmed cases but also those under monitoring and investigation.

However, it is quite impossible for the healthworkers to keep track of every patient, thus, a new kind of approach has been developed worldwide — COVID tracking app.

Several cities in the Philippines have adapted this approach in an effort to trace the spread of the virus, thankfully, Cebu’s included in the list. A mobile application was developed by the Philippine Science High School in Argao, in partnership with Synthesis Software — the COVID Control.

COVID Control is a mobile application designed to make it easier for our healthworkers and DOH personnel to monitor and track COVID patients. This effort is very convenient and important in supplementing means of monitoring the progress of the cases as well as the health status of the patients.

Here are the instructions on how to use COVID Control:

Note: The application is FREE to download, however, it is not available right now on Playstore but it will be very soon.

Shenzen, China bans eating of cats, dogs and wild animals after COVID-19 outbreak

China caged dogs

It seems that China has learned its lesson from the emergence of Novel Coronavirus, or COVID19, as they start to ban the unsanitary consumption of cat and dog meat in Shenzen, China to which they call “Shenzhen Special Economic Region Regulation on a Comprehensive Ban on the Consumption of Wild Animals”.

This city is the first one in the country to start the ban and it is a big step against the culture surrounding the unregulated black market of consuming thousands of varying wildlife, as well as a big step for civil humanity and compassion for nature’s blessing in their nation.

“Dogs and cats as pets have established a much closer relationship with humans than all other animals, and banning the consumption of dogs and cats and other pets is a common practice in developed countries and in Hong Kong and Taiwan. This ban also responds to the demand and spirit of human civilization.”

– Spokesperson of the City Government

“With Shenzhen taking the historic decision to become mainland China’s first city to ban dog and cat meat consumption, this really could be a watershed moment in efforts to end this brutal trade that kills an estimated 10 million dogs and four million cats in China every year.”

Dr. Peter Li, China policy specialist of Humane Society International

Indeed, it is a commendable action and a glimmer of hope for humanity as dogs and cats are our companions in life. They are there to stay with us and to comfort us in our difficult times. Man’s best friends deserve to be in our hearts, and have no place in our stomachs.

5 stages of coronavirus infection according to Malaysia’s Health Ministry

0
coronavirus illustration covid19
This illustration, created at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), reveals ultrastructural morphology exhibited by coronaviruses.

We already know that the incubation period of the novel corona virus (COVD-19) is 14 days and that there are asymptomatic patients but what we don’t know is that this coronavirus infection has 5 different stages.

This was according to the statement given by Malaysia’s Health Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah.

These stages are ranked according to the severity of the infection cases.

5 Stages of COVID-19 Infection

Stage 1: Testing positive without any symptoms.

Individuals can still be active without feeling ill. Daily routines are not interrupted. People we call asymptomatic comes only on this stage. These are carriers of the virus without showing any symptoms.

Stage 2: Testing positive with only mild symptoms.

This is when the individual becomes weak and experiences fever and dry cough. This stage is believed to have the highest risk of transmission. Mild cases comprises approximately 80% of all confirmed cases.

Stage 3: Developing some form of pneumonia.

This stage is where complications of severe COVID-19 cases manifests like pneumonia, hypoxemic respiratory failure, as well as sepsis and septic shock. This list of complications is from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Stage 4: Having breathing difficulties and requiring oxygen support.

Patients who have breathing problems from mild to severe are on this stage. From shortness of breath to requiring an oxygen support. According to the WHO, 1 out of every 6 people infected with COVID-19 start to develop serious bouts of breathing difficulties.

Stage 5: Needing to be intubated and put on a ventilator.

The last stage is the most critical stage. This is where a patient will need to rely on a ventilator to keep breathing.

“We also have death cases involving young patients like the one aged 34 and the youngest was 27. But (this was because) they came (to the hospital) at a very late stage. They came when they were already at stage 3 or 4 (of a COVID-19 infection), where they already had pneumonia and needed breathing assistance,”

– Noor Hisham, Malaysia’s Health Director-General

“There are many deaths involving those who have diabetes, hypertension and low immunity. This made up about 67 percent of the total number of deaths,”

DOST studies virgin coconut oil as possible treatment on CoVID-19

0
1dost covid19 treatment

As the World Health Organization (WHO) is determined to coordinate among countries with every possible treatment there is to the global pandemic, the Philippines is doing its part too.

A clinical study for a possible treatment on the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), and we are looking at something that is accessible and abundant in our country, the Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO).

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will be working hand on hand with University of the Philippines – Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) and Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA).

The general idea is to research, study and conduct trials on how VCO can be used as treatment for (COVID-19).

“Given the considerable scientific evidence for the antiviral activity of coconut oil, lauric acid and its derivatives and their general safety, and the absence of a cure for (COVID-19), we urge that clinical studies be conducted among patients who have been infected with (the virus). This treatment is affordable and virtually risk-free, and the potential benefits are enormous,”

– DOST

They will conduct a parallel study which is “hospital-based and community based” on the antiviral properties of VCO.

* Hospital-based (UP-PGH)

– Study led by: Dr. Marissa Alejandria, Director of the Institute of Clinical Epidemiology of the National Institute of Health of UP Manila.

– Activity: VCO will serve as a supplement to the daily treatment regimen of COVID-19 positive patients.

* Community-based

– Study led by: DOST – Food and Nutrition Research Institute

– Activity: VCO will be incorporated in the food provided to PUIs

“VCO will serve as a supplement to the daily treatment regimen of COVID-19 positive patients. The study aims to assess the possible benefits of VCO if given to patients with moderate to severe COVID-19 in addition to the drugs being assessed in the clinical trials”

– Fortunato dela Peña, DOST Secretary

A lot of countries are looking at all the possible treatments for the viral disease. Treatments being developed and tested all over the world should give us hope of winning this war against the invisible enemy.
