Netflix reduces video quality in the Philippines to handle surge

With the enhanced community quarantine mandated nationwide, we find ways to fight boredom while in the comforts of our home. You can play video games, use apps like TikTok, get in touch with your passion and catch up with your favorite shows thru Netflix. Apparently, the latter has the bigger population.

Following an order from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), Netflix announced last March 25 that it will slightly reduce its video quality in the Philippines. This is to lighten the expected increase of usage during the lockdown.

The quality reduction refers to the bitrate of the video, the amount of data per second a video has in kilobits-per-second.

Simply put, some viewers may notice a slight reduction in the overall video quality. Netflix stated that this reduction significantly contributes an approximated data savings of up to 25%.

“The measure will help free-up bandwidth as the increased demand by subscribers may risk overloading network capacity during the quarantine period. Data consumption is expected to surge due to the work-from-home arrangements as well as increased government, private and education demands,”

– National Telecommunications Commission (NTC)

Apparently, Netflix initiated “data-saving changes” on other countries as well, particularly in Europe. Government officials anticipated the increase due to the coronavirus outbreak, as people are forced to stay indoors prompting them to use the streaming services more.

“Wash your hands.”

The importance of this simple task has been drilled to us over and over again. A simple task that can save lives, stop the spread of the virus and help us overcome this global pandemic.

Most of people’s movements have been halted but there are still establishments operating that are too necessary to our community. Some examples are medical facilities, food manufacturing, and government offices.

Accessible hand-washing was one of the brilliant ideas people have come up with for these frontliners. Hand-washing stations that can easily be moved, that are space-saving and with a touch of color and creativity which we all need at these times.

The Red Cross Youth Cebu Chapter calls these innovations the “Drumvatory”. These are simple hand-washing stations composed of a steel drum and a simple faucet system at a very affordable cost.

Together with the Water Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) unit of Philippine Red Cross Cebu Chapter, they plan to distribute hand-washing facilities to different communities as an initiative to combat COVID-19.

Help them by donating!

Red Cross Youth – Cebu Chapter has already distributed 17 Drumvatory to some public hospitals in Cebu, and aims to provide these hand-washing stations to more hospitals in Cebu.

Here are their contact info if you wish to donate on cash or in kind.

Some of the simple things you can donate:

  • used or new barrel drum
  • sealant
  • colour paint white

Aice, affordable Singaporean ice cream, now trending in Cebu

5
1aice ice cream cebu

For this year, we can only feel the “summer” season because it’s hot outside.

Unlike the past years when we can easily hit the beach or go on a cozy vacation to beat the summer heat, it’s a different story for this year’s “dry season” as we are encouraged to stay at home while in quarantine.

This is probably one reason why Aice has become a trend now in Cebu. Aside from the fact it’s satisfyingly cold, Aice ice creams are surprisingly delicious yet crazily affordable. They have a variety of flavors to choose from, with a price range of P10 to P25 each only.

No wonder why many Cebuanos have been crazy about the Aice ice cream and talk about it on social media.

11 Filipino Doctors who died battling COVID-19

0
1Filipino Doctors COVID

Doctors play a vital role in every nation’s healthcare system, especially now that we are in a fight against this virus called CoVID-19. Our medical workers and other frontliners, together with Philippine government, are working tirelessly in ensuring the safety of the Filipino people and preventing further spread of the virus.

According to the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) president, 84,200 doctors all over the country are enough to respond to our current situation. Ever since the first-ever case has been confirmed the Philippines, our medical workers braved the peril and still worked in frontlines.

They have been fighting for weeks and it deeply saddens us that as of today, ten doctors have passed away after losing the battle against COVID-19. DOH Spokesperson Maria Rosario Vergeire admitted that some of the main reasons behind the death of the doctors are lack of protective gear and patients who did not fully disclose their symptoms, travel history, and state of health.

These modern heroes risked their lives to save ours, that is why, it’s just right to give honour to the fallen heroes who selflessly fulfilled their role until the end of their lives.

Almost everyone is in home quarantine. This is the best time to do the things you’ve been  planning to do “if you only have the time”.

We should make most out of it, may it be a hobby, a skill you’d want to learn, or a start on that workout.

One Cebuano has got it right. Instead of focusing on negativities circulating on social media, he directed that energy into creating something beautiful.

Cebuana trans posts unfortunate ‘catfishing’ story that trended nationwide

0
1jzan tero bill iver sam morales

If you have been traumatized, is it enough to traumatize others?

The question arose when a Cebuana transwoman, Jzan Vern Tero, disclosed in a Twitter thread how filmmaker, Sam Morales, caused her trauma by pretending to be Jzan’s lover, Bill Iver Reyes.

In a series of tweets posted on March 30 by Jzan, she shared how she met Bill through a dating app. She posted some screenshots of their convo and made mention how she has been manipulated.

Theirs was a long-distance relationship. Jzan was based in Cebu while Bill was in Manila. However, Bill promised to meet Jzan in her hometown. But the plan didn’t come to fruition due to a family emergency. The claim was then backed up by Bill’s cousin, ‘THE’ Sam Morales.

Jzan was very vocal about Sam helping her work things out with Bill. Same was the one who could patch their relationship when it went rocky.

Emotions, money, time, and effort were invested by Jzan while the real Bill, who knows what he was thinking.

Fortunately for Jzan, tables have turned when she met with her friends in Manila. One of her colleagues recognized her so-called “boyfriend” to be a man named Bilko Argana and not Bill Iver Reyes.

The two then broke-up but patched things again after Bill apologized for lying about his identity.

Their love affair continues.

When the two decided to meet in Manila, Bill asked Jzan if his cousin, Sam, could join them.

Jzan agreed and the three of them met in a hotel. When Sam left the two, Bill confessed that all this time, it was Sam who was texting Jzan.

According to Jzan’s tweets, Sam reached out to her to explain how she ended up fooling our trans friends. She was traumatized herself before. She was allegedly bullied by homosexuals hence, the revenge.

After this story stormed the internet like wildfire, netizens and celebrities rebuke Sam Morales. Many were angered by how Jzan ended up.

Then again, the answer to the question aforementioned is still for you to decide. Sam Morales’ acts were surely despicable, but was it criminal? I will let you decide.

Facebook to be banned in the Philippines due to Fake News dissemination

2
facebook april fools

Without Facebook, how do you think can you survive the next weeks in quarantine?

With the nation being placed in an enhanced community quarantine, we could only bank on our social media accounts to pass time. We rant on Twitter about the government’s shortcomings, we stream videos for entertainment on YouTube, we post our throwback photos on Instagram for inspiration, and we check everything about COVID-19 on Facebook.

Because of all the news being circulated on Facebook about COVID-19, netizens have failed to think before they click. They were not able to know what they were reading hence, the improper sharing of FAKE NEWS.

Though the easiest access to all updates about COVID-19 is Facebook, the company is not happy about how Filipinos have been using Facebook. Earlier today, it was announced that Facebook would be banned in the Philippines due to “improper usage”. The amount of fake news Facebook has reported within the span of two weeks alone up surged to 100%.

So, even if Facebook has been our easiest means to access information, Facebook Philippines has been keen on discouraging fake news dissemination hence the banning of the app.

May the need to ban Facebook open our eyes and make us realize the importance of weighing what we are reading. If you have reached this part, you have probably known that today is April 1st. What is this article then? Happy April Fools!

IEC center turned into CoVID-19 care facility in Cebu

1IEC Convention Center Cebu

As the number of confirmed cases rises here in Cebu, the number of PUI’s and PUM’s are exponentially increasing too.

With these, lack of quarantine facilities and care areas is now one of the many problems that we are facing right now.

Well, here’s some good news: the International Eucharistic Congress Convention Center Cebu (IC3) will become one of the “first response areas” set up to serve as CoVID-19 care and quarantine facilities.

IEC Convention Center Cebu
Photo from cbcpnews.net

Having a floor area of about 25, 754 square meters, this will be perfect facility for people showing symptoms of corona virus.

The Archdiocese of Cebu has opened its IEC center as part of a concerted effort called “Bayanihan Cebu Center” (BCC) to serve mildly to moderately symptomatic patients.

“Now, its doors are to be opened in collaboration with the kindness and generosity of some people in Cebu, to become a haven of hope and healing,”

– Caritas Cebu

“The venue that used to hold the teachings on the Eucharist will now become a place of concretizing that bread being broken and shared to those in need in time of this Covid-19 pandemic”

First response area

  • International Eucharistic Congress Convention Center Cebu (IC3)
  • Sacred Heart School — Ateneo de Cebu, formerly known as SHS School for Boys.

Drop-off area

  • San Carlos Seminary – for medical supplies and equipment needed by the two centers.

The bayanihan spirit of the Filipinos has been burning as we face this pandemic and I hope that it keeps lighting up and get us through this crisis.
