The Bear Cave: Cebu’s First Fluid Art Studio

Art comes in all shapes, sizes, and forms. Some people are artists by profession, while others make art as a hobby. Making your little masterpiece is both fun and therapeutic.

Let’s see, you already did painting, sketching, and even digital art; what more is there to try out? Well, maybe it’s time for you to try Fluid Art. Fluid Art is an even more fun way to do an abstract painting where you use acrylic paint and pour it on a canvas, and this fluid art studio offers just that.

The Bear cave is Cebu’s first-ever fluid art studio. They offer workshops where people can design their fluid art.

It all started when Kim and Clyde attended a fluid art class in Sydney. They both got fascinated by fluid art and wanted to bring their experience to Cebuanos, and thus The Bear Cave Cebu was born.

In an interview, Clyde acknowledged how naturally curious and creative Cebuanos are, which is why The Bear Cave was worth the risk. He also added that The Bear Cave helps clients get out of their shells and try new things.

The best thing about the art studio is they use adorable bears of different sizes as canvases. The Bear Cave has five different bear sizes such as the keychain (₱350), Small Bear (23cm for ₱700), Medium Bear (34cm for ₱1,100), Large Bear (54cm for 5,500), and Jumbo Bear (72cm for 15,000). They also have a limited-edition clown figure of 32cm for ₱2,000.

Upon arriving at the studio and as the session starts, clients are welcomed with various paint colors and can mix any color they want. Clients also have the liberty to design their bears which is why the sky is the limit for your artwork.

The Bear Cave caters to people of all ages. Going to the studio and trying out fluid art is a great way to spend time with family and friends. The studio might even be your next date spot with your significant other.

Even action stars tried the therapeutic fluid art. The Bear Cave shared a video on its official Facebook page showcasing celebrities like Albert Martinez, Jake Cuenca, and Enzo Pineda as they each make their fluid art masterpiece.

The Bear Cave Cebu is located at One Paseo, Paseo Saturnino, Banilad, in Cebu City. They are open from Monday to Friday, 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM. They are also open on weekends and holidays from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

Pour your feelings into beautiful artwork at The Bear Cave and bring your art imagination to life —in bear form.

Rising Soon: CIT University’s 15-Storey Building with Smart Classrooms, State-of-the-art Facilities

Cebu Institute of Technology – University (CIT-U) University welcomes a new chapter as they officially announce the groundbreaking of their soon-to-rise 15-Storey Building.

CIT University aims to become the TOP Philippine University that produces quality students and provides quality services to stakeholders, which is why the building perfectly fits into the overall development plans of the university. The new building’s adequate space and infrastructure would help cater to the students’ needs and achieve the university’s mission and vision to further produce top students.

SugboPH talked to CIT University’s Marketing Director, Ms. Rafaeliza “Raffy” P. Diano, to share with us the current development status and other details about the building.

It’s more than just a 15-storey building. Why? Let’s find out.

Smart Classrooms and State-of-the-art Facilities

CIT University prides itself on introducing its tallest building on campus, but that’s not all. According to Ms. Raffy, aside from its height, the building is different from others because it is more forward-looking.

The new building is more pandemic-ready with its smart classrooms and well-equipped function & lecture halls.  It will feature state-of-the-art facilities that allow students to have better collaborative and flexible learning and for educators to have even greater quality instruction delivery.

The initial plan is to put the College of Engineering and Architecture in the building since they are the biggest college in the university.

High-Speed and Reliable Internet

The university sees the importance of having a fast and reliable internet connection. This is why they are working closely with Management Information System (MIS) Director to provide students and teachers high-speed internet.

Sustainability Features

CIT University also understands the importance of using sustainable and renewable resources to have this building go up and running. Ms. Raffy said they are working with the university’s Electrical Engineering Department to support renewable energy.

There will be energy-efficient features such as solar photovoltaic energy that directly converts sunlight into a new energy source.

Earthquake Safety Feature

Considering that a 15-storey building is susceptible to earthquakes, safety is CIT University’s top priority. They are also working with a professor in Japan who specializes in earthquake engineering. The building will have seismic isolation bearings to protect structures from earthquakes.

Target date of Operation

There is no word yet on the exact opening date. However, it is said that the building is expected to be ready for turnover by Academic Year 2025-2026.

All hands on Deck for the Building’s Success

To ensure a well-planned development for the new 15-storey building, CIT University’s educators and alumni work hand-in-hand.

There is a Technical Working Group that is comprised of two Civil Engineers who also have administrative roles. Engr. Suzette Pacaña is the spearhead of the building’s civil works. She is assisted by Engr. Mae Jessica Galgo, the assistant building supervisor.

In terms of the mechanical work, it is led by the Head of the Office of the Property Custodian, Engr. Nicarter Teves. He works closely with Engr. Erwin Salvador, who also takes charge of the electrical works..

Moreover, there are also Architects involved, such as Architect June Bayaton (Architecture Department Chair) and Architect Dexter John Perral. Architect Dexter John Perral was a topnotcher during the January 2016 Architecture Licensure Exam. Both architects are assisted by Ms. Clarisse Ortiz.

To spearhead the ICT infrastructure, they have Dr. Larmie Feliscuzo, the Director of the Management Information System (MIS), and of course, the finance director, Atty. Janzen Joseph Sevilla.

With a team of hardworking professionals, it is without a doubt this building will soar to great heights.

Pride and Embracing Innovativeness

CIT University wants its students to feel proud to be part of the CIT University family. In addition, they want students to embrace innovativeness with the help of the different state-of-the-art features the new building will have to offer.

What’s Next for CIT University?

The 15-storey building is one big step to an incredible accomplishment, but CIT University is not stopping there. According to Ms. Raffy, the university’s plans to provide experience zones and simulators such as Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are in the works.

They also want to put emphasis and importance on film and art students. The university has plans to set up a giant outdoor LED wall for movie screenings to give students a better experience during the school’s film festival.

FAQS

1. Will there be a change in curriculum? Will there be new programs introduced?

The curriculum has remained the same, and there are no plans to introduce new programs. However, CIT University is confident that the new building will be able to support any updates in the future.

2. Where will the new structure be located?

The new 15-storey building will rise in Tres De Abril Street at the back entrance. According to Ms. Raffy, they hope this new building will provide the right facelift to the main entrance. For the longest time, people just know N. Bacalso is the main entrance.

As CIT University soars to greater heights, its infrastructures follow. Congratulations to CIT University for this outstanding accomplishment.

The Last of Us: The hype, the hit, and why you should watch it

The reputation of being serious works of art is scarcely one that live-action video game adaptations enjoy. Most of them have found nowhere near great quality but only settled with mediocrity; at best, the last ten years have yielded well-crafted family fun, such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Detective Pikachu.

Photo from iMDb

Although video games themselves are capable of telling stories on their own, they do not naturally translate to films or television programs. However, The Last of Us is different, as it has been widely acclaimed as one of the best video game stories ever told and adapted into a spectacular nine-part HBO series.

All about The Last of Us

The Last of Us, which was first released in 2013, takes place in the post-apocalyptic US. It is set 20 years after the majority of the population has been transformed into mindless monsters by a parasitic fungus called Cordyceps.

Photo from iMDb
Photo from iMDb

It centers on Joel, a seasoned smuggler played by Pedro Pascal in the program, who is charged with transporting Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a young woman with an apparent uncommon immunity to the illness, across the nation.

For those who will enter this series entirely unprepared, their performances serve as excellent entry points. Particularly those who were intrigued since their gaming friend or a member of their gaming family had been nagging them about it.

What makes it stand out among the rest

The standard was raised when the original “The Last of Us” game was released in 2013 and word of mouth and sales helped it become an instant classic, similar to a species-jumping viral tangent. Neither was the game intended to become a cult classic. Everyone wanted it to be known as one of the greatest video games ever, regardless of opinion.

Photo from iMDb

Nonetheless, we are aware of the skepticism or caution shown by non-fans and non-players. The money-hungry studios have always considered these adaptations as cash cows, and for every entertaining “Mortal Kombat” or “Resident Evil” movie (but just the first ones!), there’s a cringe-worthy “Warcraft” or “Assassins Creed”.

This series stays clear of all the pitfalls of those rotten apples. The best adaptations try to improve their source material rather than simply copy it. However, even if you’ve played the games, there’s no assurance that you’ll be able to predict with any degree of certainty where the episodes are heading or what will happen next.

Photo from iMDb

There seem to be a lot of scenes and passages in the series that just wouldn’t have made sense in the video game. Yet, overall, we have to give credit to how much thought and wise decisions were made to build this series in its high quality, even after seeing the first episode. Thus, in its entirety, The Last of Us is something you should definitely watch during the weekends, whether you’re a gamer or not.

Cebu Bus Rapid Transit — the first in the country

“Aside from the greater convenience that it will bring to the people, it will also provide better opportunities and travel experiences to commuters and drivers in the province of Cebu.”

One of the government’s most important infrastructure initiatives, the CBRT aims to improve the efficiency of the province of Cebu’s urban passenger transportation system overall. It aims to provide accessibility to passengers, boost productivity through better mobility, and lessen air emissions as well.

Unveiling the project

On Monday, February 27, the P16 billion Cebu Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project finally started construction at the Fuente Osmeña Circle in Cebu City after a ten-year delay.

“Today, we are finally here to put this strategy into action and calibrate Metro Cebu’s transportation system,”

Following the groundbreaking, the local government plans to start building along Osmeña Boulevard, according to Paul Gotiong, director of Cebu City’s transportation office.

What’s in it for Cebu

The Cebu BRT (CBRT) is one of the national government projects approved to offer an “affordable, dependable, efficient, and safe” public transportation system in Metro Cebu, according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the project’s principal implementing agency.

From South Road Properties (SRP) in the city’s south region to the IT Park in the north, the route spans 13.18 kilometers (km) of separated lanes with 17 stations, one depot, and one trunk terminal. It includes a 22.1 km Feeder Line System with two feeder terminals that will cross mixed traffic.

Three phases also make up the CBRT project, which runs through Talisay, Cebu, and other municipalities in Cebu Province. There will be 76 bus stops all around the province, making it accessible and readily available for commuters.

Expected timeline

The Hunan Road and Bridge Construction Group Co. was given Package One of the CBRT by the DOTr. late in 2022, Ltd. They will be responsible for finishing Phase One, or the building of the 2.38 km segregated bus lane with four bus stations and 1.15 km of a pedestrian upgrade, as well as the civil works.

The CBRT Phase One is expected to be partially operational by December 2023 and fully operational by the second quarter of 2025, according to the P900 million project’s private contractor.

Next, CBRT Package 2 is responsible for building a 10.8 km Segregated Bus Lane with 13 bus stations, including one in SRP, one at an IT Park roundabout, and one in an SRP depot. The project’s backers are still working on the details of its precise design at this time.

Lastly, Package 3 is for building a 22.1 km feeder route with 76 bus stations, including feeder terminals in Talisay City and Barangay Talamban in Cebu City.

All Hail the Queens!

The month of March marks the official women’s month as we celebrate women’s achievements and women’s empowerment. Women have participated in various activities and competitions as they shed light on different issues. A lot of these competitions include beauty pageants.

To people’s knowledge, beauty pageants such as Miss Universe, Miss Earth, and Miss World are not just battles of looks and who wore the best costumes. Instead, these beauty pageants emphasize womanhood and are great avenues to advocate for positive change.

In addition, she brought honor to the Philippines by placing in the Top 5 of the Miss Universe pageant. Beatrice proudly hails from San Fernando, Cebu, and was raised by a single mother.

4. Karla Paula Henry

Filipina-Canadian, Karla Paula Henry proudly represented Cebu during Miss Earth 2008. She proved to be a beauty with a heart as she led tree-planting activities. She also helped in educating public school students about environmental issues.

5. Jamie Herrell

Jamie Herrell is the second Cebuana to claim the Miss Earth title after Karla Henry. She was only 20 when she was crowned Miss Earth in 2014. The beautiful Filipino-American was born in Glendora in Los Angeles, California.

A Multimillionaire at 16: The Alexis Dupagan Story

Who knew posting food hacks on social media could make you a multi-millionaire?

Because of his success, he now has 3.1 million followers on Facebook and one billion combined views on TikTok.

Photo from Alexis Vines on Instagram

The content creator tried all means just to earn money. He even tried joining singing competitions but according to him, it did not work. Alexis came to realize that his talent was not singing but vlogging. He started out by asking for 100 pesos from his mother to buy food at a local “karinderya” and start his vlogging career.

The young content creator’s content got 100,000 views which gradually increased until he reached a 3 Million subscriber count on Facebook and Tiktok. He also has 308k subscribers on Youtube.

Now, Alexis is a proud owner of multiple properties including a car. Not only that, but the young content creator also turned his dream of owning a coffee shop business into reality. He started his own coffee shop with ₱500,000 starting capital.

With the help of his brother, who is also a content creator, Alexis was able to buy land properties such as a 4,000-square-meter lot in San Miguel, Bulacan, and a 2,000-square-meter land property in Mindoro.

And what’s even more amazing is that the siblings paid in cash. They plan to build a modern house with a swimming pool and a rest house.

Alexis also made sure to build a home for his grandmother in the province. Not only is Alexis hardworking, but he also has a kind heart.

The content creator turned multi-millionaire urges aspiring content creators to be confident with what they are doing and to always work hard.

Alexis started from humble beginnings but because of determination and the desire to turn his dream into reality, he is now earning enough for himself and his family.

Keep it up, Alexis!

LOOK: Proposed Conceptual Design for the Lapu-Lapu Memorial Park, Museum, & Monument

“Retelling the 500-year-old story through modern art and architecture”

This was what the proposed design aimed for. A proposed conceptual design of the Lapu-Lapu National Shrine and Monument was released in 2021, featuring the work of young Senior Architectural staff from the RRSA namely Immanuel Martinez, RA Juanir, Ivan Manabat, and Ar. Ralph Richard Su.

Photo from RRSA Facebook Page

The creators of the proposal wanted to give Cebuanos a fresher perspective on what Lapu-Lapu was like during his time. They also wanted to highlight the two perspectives during the battle of Mactan.

Anamorphic Lapu-Lapu Monument

The proposed design showcases a monument of Lapu-Lapu with an anamorphic effect. Half of the monument shows the image of Lapu-Lapu that’s akin to how Cebuanos see him until this day. Meanwhile, the other half represents Lapu-Lapu’s humanity in an artistic sense.

Photo from RRSA Facebook Page

Photo from RRSA Facebook Page

The monument is anamorphic since it appears to be abstract at first glance. However, when viewers reach the rear, a silhouette of the other half will be revealed.

Lapu-Lapu Memorial Park & Museum

The design also showcases different outdoor spaces for different social activities. Moreover, there is also an indoor museum that lets visitors experience a story-telling of Philippine History. According to the description, the Museum is lowered to emphasize the monument.

More About the Proposed Design

There are many aspects to the sign that the creators wanted to put emphasis on. There are social spaces, descending steps by the shore, a sunken cave-like amphitheater, a winding ramp, and a roof deck.

But wait, there’s more! The whole structure has an elliptical configuration that gives visitors a 360-degree descending view of the monuments which dramatically reveals another mirrored monument. As per the description, the creators wanted to symbolize the duality of Lapu-Lapu during the Battle of Mactan.
