The pun in ‘Pan Burikat’

0

In the Philippines, I don’t think that there are shops that could attract passersby as much as bakeries. Could it be because of the mouth-watering smell emanating from them? That, we don’t know, but one thing is for sure, breads are much loved by Filipinos and Pan Burikat is not an exception.

Regardless of socioeconomic stature, Filipinos, especially Cebuanos, eat Pan Burikat and to those who just heard of it, I know you’re wondering why is it named after a sex worker?

Pan Burikat, or Pan B for the conservative, is one of Cebu’s most nostalgic pastries. Once you hear the name, you can automatically think of a sweet, with a brightly-colored filling bread – Pan B.

Pan Burikat Cebu (1)

Why the name?

Brace yourselves, we’re about to reveal the TRUTH!

Then again, why are we associating this innocent pastry to a sex worker?

According to our research, Pan in Spanish means bread, and Burikat in Cebuano means prostitute. Joined together, Pan Burikat got its name because of its appearance and process.

I know we shouldn’t be judging something by its cover, but they say that the bright red filling of pan burikat conjures up erotic symbols – passion, sex, lust, and even the red lipstick mostly worn by prostitutes.

On the other hand, others would also say that because like prostitutes, Pan Burikat is cheap / affordable and can mostly be found being sold in the corners of the streets.

The Evolution of Pan B*

Just like time and technology, Pan Burikat has also evolved and upgraded its colors – yellow, green, (others) violet, and red.

Pan Burikat has been part of every Cebuano’s life as much as any delicacy, so it is just right to bring it some recognition and clear out any misconception.

If you’re from Luzon and wondering what it’s called in your place, you call it Pan de Regla. You’re welcome!

We just want to get it out there that we are in no way shaming nor generalizing prostitutes, colors, or anything described in this article. This is purely based on research.

Where to buy Pan Burikat?

This bread is common and available in almost every bakeshop in Cebu, including the popular ones like Julie’s, Mang Tinapay, Arbee’s, San Jose, among others.

Air Busan, a lower-cost South Korean airline, announced a new route connecting South Korea, Cebu’s strongest foreign tourist market, to the Queen City of the South.

The inaugural flight from Incheon to Cebu with 194 passengers, arrived in Cebu on November 13, 2019. This new international flight will operate daily from the South Korean city of Incheon to Cebu and vice-versa, with a carrying capacity of 195 passengers, using Airbus 321-200.

“Air Busan has been in service for the past nine years in Cebu with only Busan-Cebu-Busan as its destination. As part of the company’s growth, we are eyeing to expand business opportunities by opening various schedules to customers and one of them is by providing an additional service to Cebu at the Incheon Airport, which is known to be the largest airport in Korea. Being the major gateway of travel in Korea, the influx of travelers will surely make a good business output,”

– Air Busan Cebu manager Suzette Mae Agonia-Tacocong

As of this writing, Air Busan offers six domestic routes and 32 international routes, one of which is Incheon-Cebu. The airline also has plans to continuously expand its route network to Japan, China, Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia and Guam.

Cebu Pacific’s First Transwoman Flight Attendant is a Cebuana!

1

LGBTQI’s are always welcome.

In today’s workforce, employees still face persistent discrimination and unfair treatment due to their gender, age, race, and sexual orientation. But some companies have been better at embracing diversity than others. One good example is the late John Gokongwei’s Cebu Pacific.

Cebu Pacific has mourned for the passing of their founder, John Gokongwei, but I’m sure John is rejoicing upon hearing this good news. Cebu Pacific made history for having been the first commercial aviation company to have a transgender/transwoman flight attendant.

Jess Labares, posted on her Facebook account her story about how she has become a full-fledged CebGo flight attendant.

It was 57 days of hardship, tears, laughter, and sacrifice according to Jess.

“This job has always been glamorous to look at, but they don’t know the battle that we’ve fought. It’s not all about looking pretty, its been all about your comfort and your SAFETY.

As a trans woman, the first post op transgender woman flight attendant in the Philippines. A history has been made. I will forever cherish this opportunity given by Cebu Pacific. Id like to extend my deepest gratitude to Cebgo and Cebu Pacific for their acceptance. In behalf of the LGBTQ community, thank you. This means that we are now slowly accepting and respecting individuality, uniqueness and expression.“

Jess Labares

She also stands as an inspiration and encourages everyone to dream.

“I hope this will be an inspiration not just to the LGBTQ community but to everyone who dreams and has goals in life to never give up on something you really want. Perseverance, positivity, determination and loving what you are doing are some of the perfect formula to achieve your goal and will definitely lead you the way to success and happiness. Now I can finally say, this is by far the greatest crown I have ever achieved.”

Congratulations, Jess! Spread your wings wider and soar even higher. Props also to Cebu Pacific for employing people without judgment.

This truly is a momentous event for the LGBTQI community and the whole Philippine aviation company.

LOOK: Unique Wedding Photoshoot in Cebu

0

Being quirky and fun is not bad at all!

There are a lot of reasons why saying “I Do” in the Philippines is more fun than you could ever imagine. There are 1,707 islands in this country and the number of reasons to marry in the Philippines is as many as that.

The wedding ceremonies are always made worthwhile, especially the photoshoots. This is a one-of-a-kind and truly memorable experience if only one is determined, creative and witty enough.

Unique Wedding Photoshoot Cebu (1)

Like the wedding of Lomel Taghoy and Khirly Cane. More than it being memorable because their wedding is much awaited by their loved ones, they too, had a unique photoshoot. More than exchanging their “I DO’s,” the couple also exchanged their roles.

The usual would always be the bride and her bridesmaids in their matching wardrobes, their wedding photoshoot got their groom and his groomsmen in the aforementioned while doing sweet and girls poses. On the other hand, the bride and her bridesmaids wore t-shirts and matching plaid boxer shorts while acting as real gentlemen.

These unique photos captured by Glenn Jubs became viral after having been shared by
Jacky Tecson Acebes of Cebu Weddings & Events Planner.

Tell me, what’s more fun than the weddings in the Philippines?

Cebu voted as the 2nd Best Island in Asia

0

You heard it right; Cebu has been awarded with the title of 2nd Best Island in Asia.

Last October 2019, Condé Nast Traveler readers voted for the best islands in the world in the 2019 Readers’ Choice Awards. The places each have different categories by region and continent, such as Australia and the South Pacific, Europe, Caribbean and the Atlantic, North America, Africa and the Indian Ocean, and of course, Asia. Cebu has proven itself to be worthy as it captured the hearts of the people gaining enough votes to place itself second.

“Located in the center of the Philippines, Cebu draws nearly 2 million travelers annually for its pristine beaches and diving off the island’s northern coast,”

– Conde Nast Travler

“Spanish and Roman Catholic influences permeate Cebu City; Basilica Minore del Santo Nino houses a small statue of Christ that was presented by Ferdinand Magellan.”

Indeed, Cebu is a wonderful paradise full of secrets and pleasures, yet we should also remember to maintain it that way. One way to help Cebu’s image is to always be kind, hospitable, and helpful to others, as we Filipinos are known for these traits. We should also always remember to be mindful of our own trash and to preserve nature at all cost.

As a congratulations, here are some notable gems of Cebu that may have contributed to this victory. To those who desire to experience the best of what this island can provide, be sure to visit these Top 100 Places in Cebu.
