Biga Pit: More than just a man-made lake in Toledo City

Toledo’s very own Biga Pit is a mine pit, a quarry located and owned by the Carmen Copper Cooperation. People are only allowed to enter the area for educational purposes or private tours and not for recreational and should also contact the authorities of the mining corporation in advance.

The attraction towards the Biga Pit has become prevalent due to its resemblance to some famous tourist spots like Moraine Lake in Canada and Blue Lake in New Zealand, however, unlike them, Biga Pit was man-made.

It is believed that the bluish water is the mining corporation’s disposal waste. Thus, forcing several people to express their worries on the environmental issues caused by the pit.

The topic remains to be a little controversial, but one thing is for sure, the water is not advisable for swimming.

According to Carmen Copper Cooperation, the place is used to detonate bombs recovered from areas in the province and though the water is weirdly blue, underneath it is tons of tailings (materials left after the copper ones are separated from minerals).

Maharlicup: Good coffee with a breathtaking view

In the olden days, Cebuano breakfast often includes the traditional puto maya, chocolate sikwate, and the likes. Brush aside the trendy milk teas for a while and embrace the Cebuano culture at Maharlicup in Busay, Cebu City.

Maharlicup Cafe Busay Cebu City (1)

Maharlicup is a café which serves many Cebuano delicacies such as torta, bibingka, the puto maya and sikwate, ensaymada, kape, etc. As cafés are recently making a surge for their relaxing vibe, Maharlicup also offers such feeling as it is situated in Brgy. Philippines’ first-ever public veterinary clinic is in Cebu!

2

As it seems Cebu is now aiming to be the first of everything.

Cebuanos brace yourselves, and your furry friends, for we now have the very first government veterinary clinic in the Philippines.

Located in Barangay Calmante, Tudela, Camotes Island, is a public veterinary clinic spearheaded by the Cebu Provincial Government. Camotes is known for being a rabies-free zone and the government is taking this action to make sure that it remains as such.

They cater to all kinds of animals; pets, poultry, and livestock.

Photo from the Cebu Provincial Government (SugboNews.com)

Services in the clinic:

  • FREE Anti-rabies vaccines
  • FREE Vaccines for cattles, hogs, and poultry
  • surgery
  • x-ray
  • ultrasound
  • blood testing
  • laboratory
  • admissions
  • consultations
  • issuance of veterinary health certificates

*Note: laboratory fees will follow subsidized rates

Given that Tudela is highly dependent in its agriculture and livestock, this project is of great help to the Island’s economy and livelihood along with its neighboring islands and provinces.

“Vet clinics are usually private-owned. If there are any public ones, these are located inside veterinary offices of LGUs. This time we are hoping that the services is not just in government main office but now closer to the farmers,”

– Rose Vincoy (Provincial Veterinary Office)

I hope that this is only the start as it says ‘the first’. Government-run vet clinics should be built all over the country for greater access to every Filipino and better care for our animals. It can also be income generating so it really is a win-win situation.

The pun in ‘Pan Burikat’

0

In the Philippines, I don’t think that there are shops that could attract passersby as much as bakeries. Could it be because of the mouth-watering smell emanating from them? That, we don’t know, but one thing is for sure, breads are much loved by Filipinos and Pan Burikat is not an exception.

Regardless of socioeconomic stature, Filipinos, especially Cebuanos, eat Pan Burikat and to those who just heard of it, I know you’re wondering why is it named after a sex worker?

Pan Burikat, or Pan B for the conservative, is one of Cebu’s most nostalgic pastries. Once you hear the name, you can automatically think of a sweet, with a brightly-colored filling bread – Pan B.

Pan Burikat Cebu (1)

Why the name?

Brace yourselves, we’re about to reveal the TRUTH!

Then again, why are we associating this innocent pastry to a sex worker?

According to our research, Pan in Spanish means bread, and Burikat in Cebuano means prostitute. Joined together, Pan Burikat got its name because of its appearance and process.

I know we shouldn’t be judging something by its cover, but they say that the bright red filling of pan burikat conjures up erotic symbols – passion, sex, lust, and even the red lipstick mostly worn by prostitutes.

On the other hand, others would also say that because like prostitutes, Pan Burikat is cheap / affordable and can mostly be found being sold in the corners of the streets.

The Evolution of Pan B*

Just like time and technology, Pan Burikat has also evolved and upgraded its colors – yellow, green, (others) violet, and red.

Pan Burikat has been part of every Cebuano’s life as much as any delicacy, so it is just right to bring it some recognition and clear out any misconception.

If you’re from Luzon and wondering what it’s called in your place, you call it Pan de Regla. You’re welcome!

We just want to get it out there that we are in no way shaming nor generalizing prostitutes, colors, or anything described in this article. This is purely based on research.

Where to buy Pan Burikat?

This bread is common and available in almost every bakeshop in Cebu, including the popular ones like Julie’s, Mang Tinapay, Arbee’s, San Jose, among others.
