Mandani Bay marks Sinulog 2021 with celebration of Cebuano arts

1

Waterfront township development Mandani Bay welcomes 2021 with a celebration of art and culture as it hosts Creativity and World-class Vision, a painting exhibition by Cebu’s acclaimed abstract painter, Dennis “Sio” Montera, and Sinulog sa Mandani, a tribute to Sr. Sto. Niño and a showcase of Cebuano arts and festivities.

Exclusively commissioned to do the paintings of Mandani Bay Suites, the development’s first two towers, Sio highlights in his exhibit the Mandani Bay collection which will be on display at the Mandani Bay Show Gallery from January 14 to January 31, 2021.

The pieces, which went through an in-depth screening and approval process, are also featured in Mandani Bay’s 2021 calendar as a testament of Cebuano artist’s competence and a celebration of world-class vision and creativity.

Faith, mortality, distress, isolation, leadership, family, travel, adaptation, identity, changing social strata, and overall perseverance are among the abstract concepts of life that motivated Sio Montera in the expression of his art. These are all evidenced on the acuity, richness and relevance of the notions in the varied abstract pieces in the collection.  For Sio, it is such a liberating experience to productively finish the pieces amidst the generally felt pandemic scare, anxiety and uncertainty.

Creativity and world-class vision, as an art exhibition, is Sio’s perspective in seeing with hope and positivity the other facet of one’s continued existence in today’s world. Aside from the Mandani Bay collection, Sio also displayed some of his personal works available for public display and selling.

Following strict implementation of health protocols, Mandani Bay will also host on January 16 the Sinulog sa Mandani, a by-invitation only open house event which will be followed by a showcase of Cebuano festivities and Sinulog-themed dances. The event will cap-off with a grand fireworks display.

About Sio Montera

Dennis Montera (born 1972, Cebu City), also better known as ‘Sio’ in the art community, is an acclaimed visual artist with significant exposure in various international and national exhibitions. The central subject of his body of work is the abstraction of intimate experiences and insights, seeking to capture the essence of unpremeditated form with skillful randomness and aesthetic judgment. The artist’s collection represents different chapters of his life journey visualized through his love affair with the non-figurative expression, each phase of his form and context gestured through a manipulation of material, tool, and technique.

Sio Montera obtained his Bachelor in Fine Arts and Master in Fine Arts degrees as a painting major scholar from the University of the Philippines. He also obtained a Ph.D. in 2019 from the Creative Industries Design from National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. Currently, he is a full professor at the College of Communication, Art, and Design in the University of the Philippines Cebu where he teaches courses in Art History and Art Theory, Painting Techniques, and Studio Arts Thesis.

About Mandani Bay

Developed by HTLand, Inc., a joint venture of Hongkong Land and Taft Properties, Mandani Bay is a world-class 20-hectare waterfront township development with a stunning view of the coast and the encompassing cityscape.

Strategically located along the Mactan Channel in Mandaue City, Mandani Bay sets the bar for a new era of development in the Philippines as it is poised to become the focal lifestyle centre of its area and one of Asia’s key urban landmarks.

Viral tweet: ‘How lucky are those who live in Cebu?’

1

Cebu City has often been called the country’s gateway to a thousand journeys. Filipinos, from all walks of life, move to Cebu to seek their fortune in the Queen City of the South.

Considered to be the oldest city in the Philippines, Cebu surely has a very rich history and cultural significance. Apart from that, the island also serves as an access point to a lot of tourist destinations. Hence, a tweet about how lucky Cebuanos are to be just a few minutes plane ride away from the country’s famous destination went viral.

Alyssa Ysabel asked in a tweet; “How lucky are those who live in Cebu?”

This was asked before narrating why Cebuanos are lucky and answering them with these cute, but sensible reasons.

“45 mins to Manila, 30 mins to Siargao, 40 mins to Palawan. You got nature, city lights and vvvv good beaches few hrs from the city PLUS u got Sinulog Fest. How lucky can you get?”

I bet if youre a Cebuano or is living in Cebu, you could also affirm that you are indeed lucky to be having the aforementioned advantages.

Nonetheless, Ysabel is not done praising us just yet!

She added; “Plus the nightlife, plus u got pungko pungko sa fuente and sugbo mercado, u also got very tasty dried fish and chorizo. U guys speak multiple languages mainly bisaya and most of you are good and fluent in English.”

To be able to live and experience everything, you need to try to live in our shoes. Enjoy living the life in Cebu and immerse yourself with our culture. It will be worth it.

If you think the aforementioned is not enough to entice you about being a Cebuano/a, try falling in love with one. I could guarantee you a change of mind, and heart.

Cebu City residents can choose COVID vaccine brand, says Labella

0

On Wednesday, January 13, 2021, Cebu City Mayor Edgar Labella said he wants the residents of Cebu City to choose the brand of coronavirus vaccine they want to be injected with.

A ‘Vaccine Board’ was part of the plan to determine the brands each resident would opt to be injected with; either from China, or brands from the other countries.

“We will give them the opportunity to choose because after all, these are people’s money, taxpayers’ money. That is why I do not agree with those who said we cannot choose,” he said in a press conference.

Labella added; “If there is a way that we can choose where you are comfortable, then so be it. They should be given the chance.”

The City Health Office chief and local epidemiology experts will be included in the board.

Labella also said that the has already raised this matter to Carlito Galvez, vaccine czar, on Tuesday.

₱400 million was allocated by the Cebu City government to procure vaccines for their residents.

Cebu City is looking forward to closing a deal with Pfizer or Moderna, said Labella, for having a 95%  and 94.5% efficacy rate, respectively.

25 million doses of China’s Sinovac has already been secured by the national government and an initial of 50,000 doses are expected to be available next month.

Mayord Labella, on the other hand, has said that Cebu City is capable of storing Pfizer and other deep-freeze vaccines because of the Cebu facilities of FE Zuellig – an affiliate of Pfizer. The Zuellig facilities can store the vaccine at -70 degrees Celsius.
