Shang-Chi & The Legend of the Ten Rings: What to Know About This Upcoming MCU Movie

The fourth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is here and it is here to stay. Geeks and fans of the franchise are excited about all of the upcoming movies, such as the introduction of new heroes into the cinematic universe. Now, one of the closest movies coming to theaters is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which will come out on September 3.

Many people are pumped up and hyped for the debut of this character. However, for many others who are not really into the Marvel franchise before the MCU, Shang-Chi is not that well-known compared to Spiderman, Captain America, Iron Man, or the Hulk.

If you are one of those people, there is no need to worry. Here are a few things there is to know about to set your expectations for the upcoming film.

Who is Shang-Chi?

Photo from en.wikipedia.org

Shang-Chi is a master of the Kung Fu arts similar to that of Bruce Lee. In fact, it is said that the rise of Kung Fu movies back in the day was the inspiration to make a Marvel hero based around the concept. In the comics, he has been battling foes who threatened the safety of the Earth and has joined in many hero alliances such as the Marvel Knights, Secret Avengers, and the Avengers itself. In this movie, his father is the Mandarin.

Who is the Mandarin?

Although the Mandarin was introduced in Iron Man 3, it was revealed to be a fake act by some random person and everyone went nuts. This time, we are introduced to the actual Mandarin. He is a villain in the Marvel franchise and in the MCU, he runs a terrorist organization known as the Ten Rings. In fact, it was actually the Ten Rings who kidnapped Tony Stark in the first Iron Man movie.

The Mandarin is a powerful entity because of his possession of the ten rings.

What are the ten rings?

Photo from Shang-Chi Facebook Page

The ten rings are pieces of accessories that hold a variety of immense powers each having unique abilities. In the comics, these are the souls of ancient warriors. The ten rings consist of: Remaker; Influence; Spin; Spectral; Nightbearer; Zero; The Liar; Lightning; Incandescence; and Daimonic. The powers of all of these rings have varied from time to time but stay the same in essence. They are explained in the pictures above.

Growing up, you have probably watched or at least heard of the beloved Disney show classics such as Kim Possible, Ducktales, Hercules, The Legend of Tarzan, etc. As it turns out, many of these shows were animated by an internationally well-known animation studio based in Manila. This animation studio is Toon City, and they are responsible of the many shows you have grown up with as a kid.

What is more surprising is that according to Roderico Rene de Guzman, vice president for Toon City and chief operations officer of Toon City Academy (TCA), they are considering opening in Cebu City. He stated that the animation industry can benefit immensely through developing the city as a major hub for the practice.

Toon City is looking for talented Cebuanos

With Toon City possibly opening up in Cebu City, de Guzman has offered talented artists in Cebu to join in on the team. He stated, “Toon City is looking for animators. There’s a lot of work, and we know for a fact that people in Cebu are very talented. And we would like to expand our reach by asking the young people of Cebu to join Toon City or Toon City Academy.”

Toon City is ranked 22nd best animation studio internationally, and one of its primary contractors is The Walt Disney Company along with Warner Bros. and Universal Studios. It is said that the Philippines is earning a lot through the animation industry, with revenues standing at $20 million to $30 million.

According to Juan Miguel del Rosario, president and chief executive officer of Toon City, the animation industry pays well and that jobs can be given to those who have not finished a four-year course. Salaries can vary between 24,000 to 100,000 a month.

He states that, “We believe in the creativity of the Cebuanos. We believe the talent (for animation) is in Cebu. We would like to share this opportunity for Cebu to shine in the field of animation because we believe in the creativity of the Cebuanos.”

Cebuano Weapons Used During the Battle of Mactan

The battle of Mactan was a historical event that took place on April 27, 1521. 500 years later, it is still very relevant. After all, it defined the Filipino spirit of stubbornness to oppose foreign colonizers. Despite the advance weaponry used by the Spaniards against the Cebuano natives, our ancestors still won in the end. Thus, we are looking at all the tools used by our Cebuano ancestors as weaponry that led to their victory.

Karakoa

A weapon is defined as a tool designed to inflict bodily harm or physical damage, and the karakoa definitely fits that description. The karakoa is a large warship used by the native Filipinos most notably the Visayans, and this was used to transport Humabon’s men towards the Battle of Mactan. It was designed to carry hundreds of warriors to sea, which was very important in an archipelago.

Kampilan

Photo from en.wikipedia.org

According to Antonio Pigafetta, the Italian scholar who documented the events of the battle, the 1,500 warriors of Lapulapu carried with them various weapons including the kampilan. Pigfetta described the weapon as a “large cutlass which resembled a scimitar, only being larger”. It is a single-edged sword typically wielded with two hands.

Bangkaw

Photo from en.wikipedia.org

Another weapon noted by Pigafetta which was used by Lapulapu’s men were bamboo spears, which has been argued by historians to be the bangkaw. It is also called the sibat, and is a Filipino word for spear. It is widely agreed that these spears were made from fire-hardened rattan and tipped with metal heads.

Bows & Arrows

Photo from en.wikipedia.org

The most obvious one to be on this list would be the bows and arrows used by Lapulapu’s men. After all, Magellan was said to be killed by a poison arrow during the Battle of Mactan. This long-ranged weaponry has been used worldwide yet it has significance in this battle because this is what ended Magellan to his death.

They also have cottages and rooms where you can spend a night or two so you can really have so much fun with your family.

Cebu City and Its International Sister Cities: An Informative List

Everyone probably has a sister or a brother, metaphorically and literally speaking. They are the people you bond with, the people you grow up with. You see them develop from start to now, and they also see you do the same. Yet as it turns out, people are not the only ones who have sisters. In fact, cities can have sisters as well!

Above: Seattle as seen from above Queen Anne Hill; Below: Yokohama view from Baybridge

Cebu City has its own sister cities, both local and international. Not many people know this, so here is a list of them to fill you in. It is time to appreciate what they have done for us and also help them out when the time comes. But first…

What are sister cities?

Photo from commons.wikimedia.org; Los Angeles’ famous sister cities sign

As people can have siblings to watch and help themselves grow up, so too can cities have sisters who can do the same duty. A sister city relationship constitutes of a legal or social agreement between two cities to promote cultural and economic growth. Some sister city relationships have deep historical ties between the two while some have formed new friendships over newly found ideologies.

This concept became pretty popular after the events of World War II. The world has been starting to heal from the damages and grow from the rubble. To speed this process up and heal relationships between former enemies or strengthen bonds between newly-found allies, cities began entering pacts to foster friendships and promote cultural and commercial ties.
