5 Well-Known Rehab Centers in Cebu

Life has its ups and downs, and many people have experienced a lot of those downs. For some, their life went downhill after suffering a heavy addiction to vices such as drugs, alcohol, and the likes.

In the 1980s, Switzerland experienced a rise to heroin use. However, instead of punishing these users by jail time, they gave proper treatment and care to them. This led to lower crime rates and higher employment rates.

Which is why rehabilitation centers are very important in our society. A famous example here in Cebu is Roberto Anova Plando, more commonly known as Berta. He was a street dweller who suffered in his drug addiction but was helped by a rehabilitation center and the people who cared for him. That is why we need to give recognition to the centers here in Cebu for their work in making people’s lives better.

1. Safehaven Addiction Treatment and Recovery Village

Safehaven Addiction Treatment and Recovery Village is the rehabilitation center that treated Berta to who he is now. Their center contains proper bedrooms, gym equipment, and even a pool. Teofilo Camomot: The Cebuano Set to Become the Philippines’ 3rd Saint

0

The Philippines is a hugely catholic country. In fact, it is the only Christian nation in Asia, with more than 86 percent of the population being Roman Catholic; that is around 85 million Filipinos. The religion is deeply rooted into our culture and has been observed for generations. The church has played major roles in the formation of the country we know today.

Photo from aletia.org

Yet, despite all of that, there have been only two saints ever from the Philippines. The first one is Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, who was declared venerable in October 11, 1980, beatified in February 18, 1981, and canonized in October 18, 1987. The second one is Saint Pedro Calungsod, who was declared venerable in January 7, 2000, beatified in March 5, 2000, and canonized in October 21, 2012.

Photo from aletia.org
Photo from en.wikipedia.org

Now, there is a Cebuano priest who is set to become the third saint of the Philippines: Teofilo Camomot. He was born on March 3, 1914, in Barangay Cogon, Carcar, Cebu. As a child, he was known to be kind and caring because of his gentle and nurturing upbringing. After he graduated from elementary school, he decided to study to become an agriculturist and work on his father’s farm.

However, all of that changed as he later directed himself into joining the seminary in San Carlos in 1932. He became a priest on December 14, 1941, and was later on assigned to St. Teresa Parish in Talisay, Cebu in 1943. On March 25, 1955, he was appointed as the Titular Bishop of Clisma and the Auxiliary Bishop of Jaro, Iloilo.

According to one of his close friends, Msgr. Jose B. Buenaflor of La Paz, Iloilo, “he was a saintly man – devoted to prayer, to meditation, to conversion. [He was] a serious person, even while mingling with other priests… He was very charitable…Every time the poor went to him, he gave with all his heart…”

Photo from en.wikipedia.org

Now, he is up to becoming the third saint of the Philippines. Many testify to his spiritual gifts of healing, reading hearts, and even levitation and bilocation. There are people who have said to see him appear in two places at the same time. A Catholic organization known as the Daughters of Saint Teresa formally petitioned to beatify and canonize him and on October 15, 2010, Cardinal Vidal announced that the Holy See has approved the opening of the cause.

Did you know Bantayan Fasting Exemption for Holy Week has Expired?

The Bantayan Island exemption in eating meat during the holy week is a tale as old as time for us Cebuanos.

Actually, let’s be honest, there are those who doesn’t even know that there was an exemption. Well, read on because you are in for some learning.

The exemption or special permission dated July 27, 1824 which is formally known as “Bantayan Indult” was given by the pope himself, the chief pastor of the worldwide Catholic Church.

The Bantayan Indult was given through Padre Doroteo Andrada Del Rosario allowing the consumption of meat on days of fasting and obligation. The original document is being kept at the Bantayan Museum in Bantayan Island.

Rough translation excerpt from the “Bantayan Indult”:

“We (actual verb unknown; allow?) you to eat healthy meat, eggs and milk products during lent and other days of abstinence “- Translated by Prof. Regaladoo “Ricky” Jose (2006), CBCP committee member on Church Heritage and Sites

The special permission was made according to the regulations of Pope Leo XII prior to the Biennium of 1842-1843.

Why the exemption?

There were many assumptions made but the most logical one spread according to the locals is that the islands main source of food is the sea and during the holy week. Even to this day, no local would dare go fishing in the sea in the belief that Jesus is dead and therefore not safe. It also has a history of bad luck to those who dared to sail out in the seas. Bear in mind that this was ages ago and so without their main source of food, they can only turn to meat and eggs.

Photo from pna.gov.ph

Bantayan Indult Expiry

This is where it got a little lost in translation or just lost in generations because many still believes that this is still valid or true to this day. That the island is still exempted from the fasting practices. When in fact the Bantayan Indult that was issued in 1824 have expired in 1843. The expiration was also stated in the Bantayan Indult.

So there it is, there is no exemption anymore. And during this holy week, whatever religion you have, you should abide by your own faith.

Moalboal Guide: Pescador Island + Sardine Run + Turtle Point + Basdaku Beach

When we say there’s a lot to explore around the Cebu province, we seriously mean, a lot. Even most Cebu residents have not roamed around the province yet — but that’s what makes it even more exciting. We always have something to look forward to every time we are free for a getaway with our family and friends, without the need to fly out from the city. And there’s this one place in Cebu where you can make the most out of your one-day trip.

One of the most popular tour packages offered in Cebu is Moalboal Getaway in Southern Cebu in which the itinerary includes the Pescador Island, Sardine Run, Turtle Point, and Basdaku White Beach.

If you’re looking for a getaway that will kick-off or complete your summer, this is for you.

Pescador Island

The Pescador Island derives its name from the Philippines’ Spanish colonial heritage and the abundance of fish living on the surrounding coral reef, and the many fishermen that fish them (“pescador” translates from Spanish to “fisherman”). The rich marine life also attracts recreational divers from the many dive operations in nearby Panagsama.

Aside from visiting beaches, a stroll with your family and loved ones around botanical gardens like Lakeview Le Jardin is also an effective way to strengthen family ties, not to mention that this can be a good avenue to raise ecological awareness and increase appreciation for environmental conservation efforts.

A RESTAURANT TOO

Lakeview Le Jardin is not just a botanical garden but a restaurant too. In fact, this garden comprises two levels – the main level where the restaurant is located and the botanical garden. This makes this place a perfect place for our next weekend excursion since it allows us to munch on delicious food while enjoying the fullness of what the place can offer.

The best deal? They got the best chefs in town. Enjoy an array of mouth-watering dishes that are perfectly seasoned to satiate our cravings right in the heart of a wide garden.  The restaurant’s interiors are designed to highlight a cozy façade and other horticultural elements, blending well to the breath-taking view of the surroundings. Their food choices are also said to complement the tropical conservatory climate abundant in these higher parts of Cebu.
