LOOK: The Symbol of Hope on Christmas in Sogod, Cebu

0

It’s again the most wonderful time of the year. Ever since the ber months started, we’ve been seeing Christmas decorations in every street and home of the Filipino households. Despite the current pandemic, we Filipinos never took it as a hindrance to continue spending and share the spirit of Christmas.

One of the noticeable Christmas decorations we often see on Christmas is the ‘parol.’ The parol is the perfect definition of hope, that is why most of us hang it in our households during the holidays.

The parol history goes way back to 1908, it began with Francisco Estanislao who is believed to have crafted the first giant. He made a classic five-point star parol out of bamboo strips that he coated with Japanese paper and lit with a kalburo (lamp).

But, did you know that in the northern part of Cebu, there is a unique kind of parol made out of Abaca?

One of Sogod, Cebu’s pride is their native Abaca parols. Not only do they sell parol made out of abaca, but they also sell furniture made out of the same materials.

Their handicrafts are not only limited to parols and furniture, they also offer different Christmas decorations, such as huge Christmas trees and reindeers. It is not only unique but is a perfect design for our homes during the Holidays.

In fact, the abaca material is so popular in Sogod, that this material was worn by one of the Miss Universe Philippines 2021 candidates Steffi Aberasturi during her national costume round competition.

According to one of the native abaca Parol makers, Renan, they don’t exactly know when the abaca making business in Sogod started, however, he said that ever since he was a kid, his mother already taught him how to make one.

Their parols may vary depending on the design and size. They also offer customized sizes and designs of the parol. Prices may start from P50-P1000. If you find some of the items expensive, you don’t have to worry as most of the parol makers can be negotiated.

There is a large community of native abaca parol and furniture makers in Sogod, Cebu that was passed down from generation to generation. So if you are planning to visit there, most of them can be found passing the Sogod municipal hall. You can also stop by the municipal hall and ask for instructions.

Bill for married women to keep maiden surnames approved

Married women can now keep or maintain their maiden surname.

This is a big win for all Filipino women. Times have changed and certain circumstances are just made more complicated and difficult because of this.

The House Bill (HB) 10459, which seeks to give women the choice to keep their maiden surnames has been approved unanimously by a total of 227 congressmen present in session.

The House of Representatives has passed HB 10459 on its third and final reading, which now proposes amendment in Article 370 of Republic Act 386 or the New Civil Code of the Philippines.

With the core of providing equality between men and women, the principal authors of the bill were nine congressmen led by Deputy Speaker Rufus Rodriguez and the revision of laws committee chairperson Cheryl Deloso-Montalla.

Married Women’s Options under HB 10459

  • Use maiden first name and surname
  • Use maiden first name and surname and add her husband’s surname
  • Use maiden first name and her husband’s surname, or husband’s full name, but prefixing a word indicating that she is his wife, such as “Mrs.”

There are already various reactions to this bill and the only ones that matter really are the positive feedback from all the Filipinas on this freedom to choose.

Some even said that it should definitely be easier especially in processing legal papers without the hassle of carrying the marriage certificate everywhere.

Here’s What Really Happened Behind Nadine Lustre’s Viral Lechon Sauce Photo

0

Want to know what really happened with Nadine Lustre’s viral lechon sauce photo? After months of wondering what really happened in the photo, we are definitely getting our inner ‘Marites’ fix with this article.

In August of this year, Nadine Lustre was spotted at a store, buying lechone sauce. The photo became viral making netizens cop the same exact look during Halloween. In addition to the viral photo, memes were spreading across the wires as well when James Reid, Nadine’s ex-beau was seen with a lechon.

Photo from James Reid Instagram Account

In one of the programs of Boys Night Out, Nadine addressed what really happened in the photo. She said she just came home from a trip hungry and tired.

“It’s really really funny,” Nadine shared. “We went back home, and the only thing that we could get is the lechon manok…I bought lechon manok and then there was no sarsa. No sarsa, no suka, walang sawsawan yung lechon manok. So I was like, ‘Ay parang gusto ko ng Mang Tomas.’ Kulang yung lechon manok ‘pag walang Mang Tomas. Wala na ngang rice, wala pang sarsa ‘di ba?”

The store, where Nadine was spotted buying the lechon sauce, was the closest one.

“I got Mang Tomas which is right beside the counter. So I got it, put it on the counter. And then this girl, I saw her already that she was taking a photo. But I was so freaking tired, I was like, ‘Oh okay, whatever.’ Kaya yung mukha ko ganun na lang.”

Nadine saw the photo the next day and just shrugged it saying “I was like, oh yeah, cool.” However, Nadine had to clarify that she was not paid for the photo to promote the brand.

Cebu’s Sinulog 2022: What We Know So Far

Been missing that Sinulog fever every January? The street dancers, dancing to every beat of the drums, the colorful streets of Cebu, and the fun gala with the barkadas? Looks like we may experience this for next year’s Sinulog, however in a more precautioned setting.

Sinulog 2020

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama announced on December 7, 2021, that Sinulog 2022 will be in a ‘hybrid’ setting. It will be held virtually and physically.

He emphasized the importance of the turnout of the vaccination coverage in the city on whether or not to push through with the said event.

To recall from last year’s Sinulog, the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) strongly disagreed to conduct the Sinulog festival, despite the proposition of the city government to have it in a bubble set.

This is due to the fear of the spread of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

The continuation of the festival would still depend on whether the city would be able to reach the designated number of herd immunity.

As of Monday, December 6, 2021, the health officials have recorded 92% administered doses of the Covid-19 vaccine of the 719,000 eligible population.

The city government has to vaccinate more than 59,000 more residents to reach the set target.

If the said target will be reached then the festival can be held in full physical activity.
