You’ve probably heard of crypto these days, and with that topic, you’ve also probably heard of NFTs. For those who don’t know, NFTs or non-fungible tokens are digital assets, either images, songs, or videos which can be sold online via cryptocurrency or digital tokens.

By producing anything including art, anyone can potentially earn by trading your work via NFTs. This became the case for Nyla Hayes, a 13-year-old artist who had already earned millions of dollars by selling her digital portraits as NFTs.
By producing a collection called “Long Neckies”, where she paints iconic and powerful women of history including Oprah, Michelle Obama and Serena Williams, Hayes portrays these icons with elongated necks which proved to be valuable.

“Long Neckie Ladies is a fine art, hand drawn, computer generated collectible of 3,333 diverse and elegant females,” Nyla posted in her OpenSea page.
Hayes mentioned in an interview that as a child, she was always been fascinated with the Brontosaurus, a type of dinosaur known for having long necks. The creature’s prominent feature was incorporated to her paintings.
“At first I just wanted to put two things that I love together, and that was a Brontosaurus and women,” she said. “I wanted to show how beautiful and strong women were, and I thought of the brontosaurus as that as well.”

Hayes’ parents have already noticed Nina’s affliction for art, specifically at the age of 9 where they gave her a smartphone to use for drawing. Eventually, together with Nina, they researched and learned more about NFTs through YouTube videos.
Since then, Hayes has managed to sell her artwork via NFTs where she reached the one million dollar mark way before she became 13 years old. Just in March this year, Hayes’ painting called “Long Neckie Lady” was sold for $6,621.70 or Php 343,401.36 on Instagram.

Hayes has made headlines with her artwork and earnings that even TIME Magazine, the prestigious and globally recognized magazine has named Hayes as its first TIMEpiece artist in residence, where they select an Artist-in-Residence quarterly to develop an intimate, focused collection of art in addition to the larger initiatives featured in the Build a Better Future Genesis Collection.

Whoever hasn’t heard this? Almost every Filipino has and we especially associate it to our childhood.
Photo from Soy Bueno Taho Facebook Page
Taho is one of Filipino’s favorite comfort food, especially for breakfast and for kids. We would go running the moment we hear “taho!”. It’s warm and not overly sweet complete with its very soft tofu and fun tapioca pearls.
It is said that taho from China during the Han Dynasty and was brought here in the Philippines by Chinese migrants.
It is a street food originally made from soya beans (traditional making) but we are too lazy and time constrained to do it so there is an easy shortcut recipe that can be done at home using “softened tofu or silken tofu”.
Photo from Lyrus Sanchez
Homemade Taho (DIY Recipe)
Ingredients:
700 grams soft tofu (silken tofu)
1 + ¼ cup dark brown sugar (divided); light brown sugar for lighter syrup
3/4 cup uncooked tapioca pearls
6 + ½ cups water, (divided)
1 tablespoon vanilla essence
Photo from Unsplash
Procedure:
For the Tapioca Pearls:
Boil 6 cups of water in a cooking pot
Add-in the tapioca pearls and leave it for 30-40 mins in medium heat (or until cooked)
Add 1/4 cup sugar and mix it well.
Remove tapioca pearls from heat and let it stand and cool in the pot for 30 mins
After that, drain the water.
For Arnibal/Sweet Syrup:
Boil 1/2 cup of water in a saucepan.
Put-in 1 cup of sugar and mix well.
Add vanilla and simmer until it becomes thick.
Set aside the sweet syrup/arnibal.
For the Taho:
Heat the extra soft tofu in a microwave oven for a minute or just steam it.
Remove it from the microwave oven/steamer once hot.
When everything is cooked and done, you can now assemble all of it. Add-in the cooked tapioca pearls and arnibal/sweet syrup to the soft tofu and serve it warm as we like it.
The sun has always been our friend but it is also one of the most dangerous things in space for us and right now it’s been acting out with solar flares and solar physicists has reason to believe that there will be more that will be Earthward bound.
Photo from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory
Last April 20, between 9 am and 10.30 am, an intense solar flare (X2 class) has hit Earth and affected India and large parts of Southeast Asia and since the Philippines is also a Southeast Asian Country, we were affected too.
Solar flares are massive bursts of electromagnetic radiation emerging from the Sun’s surface. These flares are the result of changes in magnetic fields on the sunspots (the darker areas on the solar surface) that lead to a massive explosion.
Now, solar physicists are warning us that the Sun may continue to send strong flares on the coming days as a large sunspot is most likely to face Earthwards soon.

Possible effects of solar flares
Not all solar flares are harmful but Earth-bound flares can:
They can interfere with telecommunication and GPS-based services
It can hit satellite and space station operations (especially the sunlight side)
High frequency radio signals can be completely lost or rendered of poor quality
According to the latest forecast by the Space Weather Prediction Centre at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) last April 20, there are at least two large sunspots that have significant potential to emit flares for the next three days.
Photo from NASA/SDO
They are identified as:
2993
2994
Solar flares do not have any evidence or measurable influence of affecting earth’s temperature though so the heat wave we are experiencing may have nothing to do about these flares.
Nevertheless, we should be aware of what is going on in our surroundings and on space.
