0

Finally, students are back at school again and it is not just virtually. With back to school, students are again required to use the full capacity of their brain.

Studying can be such a tedious thing to do especially if paired with pressure in time and difficulty. But, though its hard, there are certain hacks to making it easier at least for our brain and body and one of the most effective one is “Food”.

Yes. No one will argue on this as generations of students can definitely attest that this is the most helpful to keeping awake in late night studying and powering up your brain.

Now, if you want to level up your comfort food game for this school year and not just have the same thing over and over again, we have here a list of the best food/snacks that you can try.

1. Popcorn: Heathy Power Up

Popcorn isn’t just for watching movies, it can also be that loud and munchy snack that will be your buddy through the night. One of its advantages aside from breaking the silence is it being a nutritious snack. Just like oatmeal, popcorn is rich in fiber and vitamins that help improve blood flow to the brain for better memory function.

It can cater to people with different tastes as you can have it as with spicy, sweet, salty and plain. This snack is also the most affordable and in such big volume already. Get your new study buddy at Snack Time located at the Second Level, Mountain Wing!

2. Coffee: “Holy” drink of Productivity

This is like the holy grail for studying. There are people who can’t even function properly without their daily dose of coffee as it gives them life and energy.

If you ever wonder why, coffee has a chemical compound “caffeine” that stimulates the central nervous system therefore, it literally energizes/wakes up your brain. You can make your own coffee at home but nothing beats the coffee at Coffee Bay located at the Second Level, City Wing

Location: Coffee Bay, Second Level, City Wing, SM Seaside

3. Yogurt: Probiotics for your Brain

Did you know that yogurt has a positive impact on your brain?

Well, we all know yogurt contains probiotics that is very helpful for our bodies metabolism but yogurt is also rich in protein, which then prompts the brain to manufacture norepinephrine and dopamine which are chemical messengers in the brain.

Probiotics for your brain even in just small amounts of this delicious snack can energize your intellectual function. It is better consumed with some fresh fruit for an added fiber boost. Delicious yogurts can be found at Koomi located at Lower Ground Level, Mountain Wing.

4. Avocado: Give Your Brain a Boost

The internet’s favorite food certainly proves its fame as avocadoes may just be your best friend during study time.

Avocadoes are an excellent source of lutein, a carotenoid that accumulates in your brain which can positively influence brain function. It is an all-natural comfort food so you won’t even have anything to worry about anything, aside from how to stop yourself from eating too much. Mind-boggling formulas and concepts will become easy-peasy with your healthy snack straight from Avocado Locco at Lower Ground Level, City Wing that even has a variety of Avo-options to choose from.

5. Chocolate: Rejuvenate Your Memory

It’s the worse kept secret or just the most favorite one for every student. Chocolates are like happiness in little treats that helps us get mentally active.

An explanation for that is studies has shown that eating dark chocolate can significantly reduce stress levels while rejuvenating your memory and immune system.

How the chocolate works for our brain is a process flow:

· First, flavonoids compounds in the chocolate helps increase blood flow to the brain

· Second, the increase blood flow will in turn improve your memory, reaction time, and problem-solving skills

The good thing about chocolates is that they will never run out of choices and varieties especially in Nuts About Candy located at the Lower Ground Level, Mountain Wing.

Best-tasting Ginabot at Pungko-Pungko sa Fuente

1

They say, if you really are a true blue Cebuano or if you want to actually experience Cebu, it’s a must to try the famous street food — the ginabot, Cebu’s version of chicharon bulaklak or pork crackling made from pig intestines.

This crispy dish is being offered by many sidewalk vendors around Cebu — locally known as “pungko-pungko” (low-seating on little benches with a small table). But if you want to make your first memorable and worthwhile, head on to Pungko-Pungko sa Fuente in Cebu City — the top choice of many Cebuanos because of their crispy and delicious ginabot. In fact, they were recognized as Sunstar’s Best Of Cebu: Best Pungko-Pungko Place.

At Pungko-Pungko sa Fuente, the vendors offer a wide selection of fried food ranging from lumpia (spring rolls which can be made of meat or vegetables), longganisa (sausage), fried chicken, buwad (dried fish), utok (brain), and of course, the popular ginabot. Most of the time, these are best paired with cold Sparkle or Mountain Dew.

Filipinos now in demand (again) abroad

According to reports, Filipino nurses should get ready to take advantage of career opportunities abroad, including in Germany, the United States, and Singapore.

Frankfurt, Germany | Photo from Unsplash

In a report by GMA News, cited by Ruru Global Recruitment Services, a U.S.-based healthcare company was looking to hire 200 medical technologists and 1,000 nurses. Nurses in particular could earn up to US$7,025 (or PHP400,000) per month, not including a US$1,000 (PHP56,760) signing-on bonus.

Recently, newly elected Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared that there was a need for thousands of Filipino nurses in Singapore, among other healthcare positions.

Meanwhile, according to the German Embassy in Manila, Germany is also trying to recruit 600 nurses for its Triple Win program. Professional nurses with at least a year of experience are eligible to apply. As part of the program, candidates will also be able to take advantage of free German language education.

Photo from Unsplash

This need for Filipino nurses shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, given that the COVID-19 epidemic forced the government to ban the deployment of medical personnel abroad at the time. As a result, despite the rise in cases, foreign hospitals struggled with a lack of manpower.

Local nurses who believed they had been denied the opportunity for increased pay for their work had previously opposed this decision.

However, the government of the Philippines eventually chose to replace the prohibition with a deployment cap, allowing 7,500 healthcare professionals to travel and operate overseas.

Additionally, the general good response and admirable attitudes of Filipino healthcare professionals throughout the pandemic have so far attracted a lot of praise from other nations that they are now in great demand.

Brooklyn, NY, USA | Photo from Unsplash

As of December 2021, 316,000 nurses were employed outside of the Philippines, which has historically been a key source of nurses.

According to a recent report from the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), while Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, and Japan have historically been the top destinations for Filipino nurses, the pandemic has also led to a demand for nurses in places like Hong Kong and Singapore, where in 2021 more than half of the migrant nurses were from the Philippines.

Soon to rise: 400-hectare Mactan North Reclamation and Development Project

Lapu-Lapu City is in again for new development, as the 400-hectare Mactan North Reclamation and Development Project (MNRDP) is said to push through finally. This is after Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan announced this development on his Facebook page.

Photo from Junard “Ahong” Chan Facebook Page

The project is a joint venture between the Lapu-Lapu City Government and the Salug Valley Enterprises and Development Corp. (SVEDC) Group. The SVEDC Group includes Jan de Nul, Royal Haskoning, Philippine Business Park, FBO Management Network Inc., and other renowned private institutions.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR THE CEBUANOS?

The development project is expected to house several modern and state-of-the-art businesses that will act as a center for foreign investments in the city. This was revealed by Dr. Noli Arnulfo Igano, President and Chief Executive Officer of SVEDC

Photo from Salug Valley Enterprises Development Corporation – SVEDC

MNRDP, which was also reported to have been agreed by the Lapu-Lapu City Government and SVEDC Group to be rebranded as Mactan Cebu Ocean City (MCOC), is expected to help solve the city’s current issues. Among these issues include traffic congestion, lack of commercial lands, and others.

Igano holds high hopes that the project will be implemented and not be delayed anymore, as it already has the support of the mayor and the Philippine Reclamation Authority (PRA). He adds that the project will surely create many livelihood opportunities, including jobs for the locals.

RUNNING HOT AND COLD

Although the people behind the development are positive about its success, there is still much to work on and wait for.

According to Chan, the project will be implemented anytime soon, but they are waiting for the decision of the Court of Appeals (CA). He added that the pending case before the CA was one of the reasons why the project took long to start.

“Tan-awon nato kay naka pending paman siya sa Court of Appeals. Let’s see kon kanus-a mahuman, mag-agad man ta sa korte kon unsay desisyon paaboton sa nato,”

MAYOR AHONG CHAN

The project was approved on April 27, 2003. Five years later, the PRA and the city government entered into a memorandum of agreement for MNRDP.

The Mactan North Reclamation and Development Project is estimated to cost around P25-30 billion.
