Cebu Plastic Barter Store: From Trash to Treasure

0

One’s garbage is indeed another one’s treasure. Well, that quote speaks truth to Cebu Plastic Store.

Cebu Plastic Barter Store at Balay Samaritano is a new recycling store in the metro. It only accepts washed recyclable plastic like water bottles, sachets, and even food packs.

What’s interesting is the ‘trade’, while you recycle these trashes you get to grab and trade any items on the store’s shelves .

Sample items that can be traded:

  • Kilos of rice

  • Shampoo
  • Canned goods
  • Clothes

The unique store is an initiative to complete a livelihood project of the 12 Basket Movement and raise awareness to waste management.

How does it work?

From time to time, customers who are mostly scavengers flock at the store to exchange their collected trash to trade with their daily commodities such as shampoo, canned goods and clothes.

STEP 1: Collect your plastic trash — plastic shampoo sachets or bottles, plastic utensils, junk food wrappers, water or softdrink bottles, and/or anything plastic! Make sure not to include other trash aside from plastics.

STEP 2: Bring them over to Cebu Plastic Barter Store near USP Mabini / Cathedral.

STEP 3: Choose the items for trade: kilos of rice, noodles, a pair of slippers, canned goods, clothes, etc. You may also not accept anything in return.

DONATE ITEMS! You can also donate items like used (but still presentable) clothes, slippers, etc.

Where do the plastics go?

Plastics collected on site are brought in their facility in Dumlog, Talisay where it will be included in the cement mix to form hollow blocks that are sold at ₱12 each.

To support this environmental movement, you can exchange your trash or donate goods for trading in Cebu Plastic Store.

Store Information:

  • Opening hours: 9AM to 3PM, Mondays to Saturdays (closed on Sundays)
  • Exact Location: Balay Samaritano — beside the USP Mabini Campus, near Cathedral Church in Cebu City.
    • Navigate with Waze or Google Maps and search for “Plastic Barter Store”.

Students can now avail 20% Discount on all Domestic Flights

0

November 1, to the workers, might be a holiday, but to the students, it is much more than a holiday because the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) said students could avail themselves of a 20-percent discount for domestic airline flights.

The CAB released the guidelines for Republic Act No. 11314, also known as the Student Fare Discount Act and such was signed by President Rodriga Duterte on April 17.

According to the CAB, the rules cover local carriers and students enrolled in any elementary, secondary, technical or vocation and higher educational institution, but itcdoes not cover those enrolled in postgraduate studies, medicine, law and “informal short-term courses” such as dancing, swimming, music, driving lessons and seminar-type course.

The rules stated that the 20-percent discount would be calculated from the “regular base fare” of domestic flights.

In cases of promo fares offered by an airline, the student would have to choose between the promo rate and the regular fare less the discount.

To avail, the student must present the following:

  1. Duly issued school identification card
  2. Current, validated enrollment form
  3. Birth Certificate
  4. Baptismal Certificate
  5. Latest School Records (Form 137)
  6. Naturalization certificate
  7. Passport

The law covers all public transportation utilities such as taxis, buses, jeepneys, vehicles for hire, tricycles, passenger trains and marine vessels.

White Taxi vs Yellow Taxi – What’s the Difference?

6

Cebu is definitely one of the busiest cities in the country. With lots of people bustling all over the streets and tourists trying to fill that wanderlust in this dear queen city of the south, chances are you might be one of those tourists. If so, you need to learn the specifics of any tourist’s go-to mode of transport – the taxi.

White Taxi

Metered white taxis are the most popular and abundant in the city. They are basically everywhere in Cebu and can be hailed traditionally on the streets. However, some taxis are using apps like Grab Taxi to get passengers.

Rate: The flag down rate for a white taxi is ₱40 inclusive of the first 500 meters, an additional of ₱2 per minute while inside the vehicle and an additional of ₱13.50 per succeeding kilometer traveled.

Yellow Taxi

Metered yellow taxis are not really common within the city, as they are more popular to be parked and waiting for passengers outside airports. They are the service cabs for passengers who dropped off from their flights.

Rate: For yellow taxis, the flagdown rate is ₱70 inclusive of the first 500 meters, an additional of ₱4 for every 2 minutes within the vehicle and ₱4 for every succeeding 300 meters traveled.

It should be noted that yellow taxis are notoriously infamous online for overcharging and scamming passengers, especially tourists outside Cebu or the country. So before you ride these, make sure to talk with the driver about the rates and be wary with the meter. Navigating with Waze or Google Maps and doing some research about the geography about Cebu is advised too, if possible.

No matter where you are going, always be mindful and knowledgeable with the transportation and traffic here in Cebu. In the long run, you’ll save money and time but more importantly, your trip within the city will be hassle-free!

UNESCO hails Cebu City as new “Creative City of Design”

0

Cebu City has done it again.

The Queen city of the South never ceases to amaze as it was recently designated as one of the world’s “Creative City of Design” by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Cebu City has made clear of its goal to be included in the list of UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network (UCCN) and has bid for the nomination during the Cebu Design Week (CDW) 2019.

The city now has a global recognition of its creative industry with “Sustainable Development” at its core.

“The member cities that form part of the Network come from all continents and regions with different income levels and populations. They work together towards a common mission: placing creativity and the creative economy at the core of their urban development plans to make cities safe, resilient, inclusive and sustainable, in line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” – UNESCO

Creativity doesn’t only mean the aesthetics or physical attributes of the city but the designing of a city where there’s significant cultural heritage, a diverse and vibrant society, use of these creative potentials and possibilities for economic development, and a safe environment.

“Cebu has a deeply rooted and flourishing creative ecosystem and that “we deserve a place in the world’s design map.” – Josefin Hey, CDW marketing co-chair

Cebu City was hailed along with other 65 cities with a total of 246 cities in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN).

Life4Cut: Korean self studio in Cebu City

Pretty. There is no other word better to describe this new Korean self studio, the Life4Cut.

Originally from the trend-setter country of South Korea, this Instagrammable place can now be found here in the Queen City of the South.

The interior is exploding in pink, and not the pink that hurts the eyes, but that adorable shade that is just so cute. Everything it touches and surrounds just pops with positive vibes, naturally influencing the people with giddy charm, cute feels and pretty pictures.

The aesthetics will remind you of those light romantic Korean dramas we love so much like Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo and Touch Your Heart.

What’s more is that they even have a restaurant, not the usual samgyup, a legit Korean resto named Kokio.

They have must-try’s like

  • Dakganjeong (Korean fried chicken)
  • Bungeoppang (fish-shaped pastry)
  • Ade (flavored sparkling water)

Rates

  • Photobooth: ₱100 (2 copies)
  • Food range: ₱25 – ₱160
  • *Dine in their restaurant and get the picture-taking for FREE.
