BIR requires online sellers, freelancers to register and pay taxes

It’s no question — many people and businesses have been greatly impacted by the global crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many lost jobs, while others had no choice but to close their businesses and companies.

This is one of the reasons why many Filipinos (and Cebuanos) resorted to online selling and freelancing to keep up with the never-ending bills and other financial obligations.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) issued a new memorandum on June 10, 2020, giving notice to all individuals “doing business and earning income in any manner or form” to register and comply with the existing provisions of the Tax Code.

Highlights of RMC No. 60-2020:

All persons doing business and earning income in any manner, specially those into digital transactions should be compliant with the tax code:

  • Should be registered with the BIR
  • Should issue proper receipts/invoices
  • Should keep books of accounts
  • Should file and pay tax returns on time

If you register before July 31, 2020, there will be no penalty imposed for late registration and late filing for past transactions.

All those who will be found later doing business without complying with the registration/update requirements, and those who failed to declare past due taxes/unpaid taxes, shall be imposed with the applicable penalties under the law and existing policies.

Basic Registration Guidelines

According to BIR’s memorandum, in general, the registration and its updates are done in the Revenue District Office (RDO) having jurisdiction over the place where the Head Office is located or over the place of residence of the individual taxpayer.

1. Persons doing business online with no Tax Identification Number (TIN) yet – Register business following existing policies in securing TIN and registration of business.

2. Persons doing business online who already have TINs but the business is not yet registered:

  • a. Individual – whether the TIN was issued due to ONETT or employment, register the business, using BIR Form 1901, with the RDO having jurisdiction over the place of business, if with physical establishment. Otherwise, with the RDO having jurisdiction over the place of residence. The concerned RDO shall effect the update of taxpayer classification (e.g., employee to sole proprietor, ONETT to sole proprietor); and include the business activity of online selling.
  • b. Non-individual – Update business registration, using Form 1905, details to include additional business activity (online selling).

The Certificate of Registration (COR) shall be issued to those engaged in business upon compliance with the requirements as followers:

World’s Highest-Paid Athletes of 2020: Forbes

It was only a few months ago when Forbes, a business magazine, released their 2020 “30 Under 30” list, wherein they featured young entrepreneurs, leaders, and changemakers in the whole world.

Just recently, they featured another set of list citing the world’s highest paid athletes for 2020, with Swiss tennis player Roger Federer claiming the top spot. Forbes revealed that Federer accumulated $106 million USD of pre-tax earnings in total over the past 12 months.

Football star players Ronaldo and Messi follow Federer with $105 million and $104 million, respectively. Neymar and LeBron also made appearances on the list as they claimed the fourth and fifth spot, respectively.

Another reason why this year’s list is special is because of Osaka and Williams. They made it to the list marking the first time that two women have made it in the top 100 since 2016. Osaka landed in the 29th spot while Williams landed on the 33rd spot.

Top twenty in the Forbes’ world’s 100 highest-paid athletes list are as follows:

LOOK: Bikers group proposes Cycling Network for Cebu City

The global effects of using bicycles have already been discussed pre-quarantine, but its benefits have been given much emphasis during this crisis.

During GCQ, only a few jeepneys and buses took the courage to transport passengers from one place to the other. Because of the scare of the pandemic, only a few passengers were also brave enough to hop on a public transportation.

If you are one of those commuters who enjoyed the use of bicycles as a mode of transportation, you will be elated to see these bike lanes circulating proposed by the Baktas Tindak Society. Though these lanes have not been formally proposed, these have made waves online hoping for the right people to hear these pleas.

“Most major destinations and basic services can fit in a 2km radius circle.”
“Highlighting the busiest destinations.”
“Structures with bike racks were identified and most of these were private developments which is obviously not enough if we anticipate the number of cyclists when the post-quarantine kicks in.”
“Most of the identified bike racks also fall inside the major destinations.”
“Possible connection in between major destinations.”
“Stretching the bike lanes further to areas with high residential density.”
“And establishing a North-South link.”
“Imagination lang pero pwede.”

I’d be happy to see these lanes too. I can’t wait to be able to pedal my way to my destination. Less contact with people and daily exercise.

Thank you for these imaginary cycling network across Cebu City, Baktas Tindak Society.

Again, these are not yet official. These are dreams hoping to be translated into reality.

This is an imaginary proposal consolidated from various individuals and cycling communities then further developed by…

Wonder Pets: Our Unsung Heroes at Home Amidst the Pandemic

0

As many of us cope with being separated from our friends and family, our beloved pets play an important role in keeping us sane and at ease with their unconditional loyalty. Pet Food Institute, the group advocating responsible pet ownership mentions the facts why our pets are our ultimate saviors while we are stuck in quarantine.

Fitness Pals

Some of us have resorted to working out at home, and some succeed as their furry friends are there to cheer. According to a study, exercising with your pet is known to have several health benefits. Exercising with your pet can significantly lower one’s blood pressure and help you calm down when you’re in distress.

Companionship At Crucial Times Like These

Several mental health experts expressed their concerns about the impact of being isolated at home as well as the drastic change in our routine pre-quarantine. Having our pets around has shown marvelous health benefits, including our mental health by decreasing our anxiety and feelings of loneliness.

Stress Relievers

Hugging and petting our furry buddies has shown to not only improve our relationship with them but they are also a great source of physical and psychological relief. While social distancing is strictly practiced, luckily, we don’t have to do that with our pets.

It may seem that the end of this crisis is still out of sight, for now, we can resort to our beloved pets as one of our main sources of strength and hope. We all just need to keep holding on until this all ends because we still need to take them for a walk in the park soon or simply giving them their favorite treats. They surely deserve it.

Mandaue City installs bike lanes for safer streets

Many Cebuano bikers, especially those residing in Mandaue City, will surely be amused as soon as waking up to this news.

On Monday night, the local government unit of Mandaue City shared on its Facebook page that personnel from the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (TEAM) are working overtime to install bike lanes along A. Del Rosario Street in Brgy. Guizo, Mandaue City.

This action came after Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes said that he is against the registration of bicycles in the city. What should be done is make bike lanes for the bikers, to make the streets safe for everyone.

“Dili ta mo require nga ipa-rehistro ang mga biskleta dinhi sa Mandaue. Ang angay natong buhaton ensakto ug luwas nga bike lanes para sa mga bikers.”

– Mandaue City Mayor Jonas C. Cortes

Heart Evangelista sold artwork to buy 550 tablets for students

Tables have turned for this darling who’s been bashed for her love for fashion amid quarantine.

If you’re one of those who badmouthed Heart Evangelista for showing her love for fashion through her new PPEs, you might want to think again.

Heart Evangelista recently announced on Twitter that she is willing to help SOME students who couldn’t afford to buy a tablet for their education. When she learned about students needing a computer or tablet for education amid new normal, she immediately tweeted about her plans on helping the underprivileged students.

Aside from giving away some tablets, she is also doing some charitable efforts through Twitter prompting her to let the students in need to DM her on Instagram.

On June 6, Heart shared that she sold her artwork to buy 550 tablets and donate them to students who don’t have the means to purchase one amid online classes.

May this crisis help us realize the importance of the bayanihan spirit that we have lost for the past few years. Instead of tearing us apart, let’s help one another.
