‘On Vodka, Beers, and Regrets’ to stream on Netflix this July 5

It seems like Netflix is not getting enough of the Filipino movies.

Just as we thought that we’re not seeing another ‘maoy’ Pinoy movie this quarantine, Netflix is yet to release another one. A film starring Bela Padilla and JC Santos, On Vodka, Beers, and Regrets will be available for viewing on Netflix this July 5, 2020.

“We, at Viva, are very proud of On Vodka, Beers, and Regrets. The film tackles a sensitive topic with a clever and different blend of humor, romance, and drama. It is part of Viva’s thrust for genre expansion and Netflix is the perfect partner being the pioneer in disrupting viewer habits and revolutionizing the art of storytelling,”

– Vincent Del Rosario, President and COO of Viva Communications, Inc.

This movie is about Jane Pineda’s journey after her career hits rock bottom-left. The struggle she had to go through and how she’s surpassed it all.

Mark your calendars and prepare your popcorns on July 5!

‘Tuob’ Kits, Healthy welcome drinks among Cebu’s new offering in EcoTourism

Cebu as a “health and wellness destination” — this is the re-branding encouraged by the provincial government in the revival of local tourism.

Tourism recovery plans, in consideration with the mandatory public health standards, were discussed in a meeting with Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia last June 10 along the mayors and tourism officers of the different towns and cities of Cebu Province.

They aim to not only save lives but also the livelihood of every Cebuano.

“Government cannot sustain this kind of lockdown, kani nga mga restriction. Government cannot sustain having to shell out more and more funds aron lang sa pagpakaon aning mga nawad-an na’g trabaho, wala na’y panginabuhi. We cannot do this. Or else we will have to set aside our future for the next two, three, four, five years. It’s time to move on and we must move on,”

– Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia

Ecotourism activities to return:

  • Whaleshark watching
  • Canyoneering
  • Island hopping
  • Snorkeling
  • Diving
  • Others

Present in the meeting were mayors and tourism officers of Cordova, Daanbantayan, San Remigio, Santa Fe, Moalboal, Alegria, Oslob, and Badian.

Health protocols discussed were:

  • Canyoonering in Badian- with 400 guests a day instead of 1,000 (in the past)
  • “Tuob Kits” – Resorts offering steam inhalation or “tuob” kits in each room which will consist of a basin, a kettle, and a towel. It’s also known as a water vapor therapy.
  • Welcome drinks – made from salabat (ginger tea), calamansi, and duwaw (turmeric) with honey will be offered to the guests.
  • Equipment commonly used in tour activities- life vests and other protective gears will be disinfected through ultraviolet light sanitation device.
  • Foot baths- they will be in place and each  room will accommodate one person only.
  • Oslob whale-watching activity – a family will not be mixed with other guests. Life vests will also be sanitized after every use.
  • Boat passes in Moalboal-  issued to accredited motorbanca operators credible of  the mandatory safety or public health standards.

“With foreign arrivals being very scarce, we only have ourselves to ask help for. Hopefully, under new normal, we start thinking our health more and our economy. Kita-kita ra’y makasulbad ani. Cebu helping Cebu. Hinaut nga ang taga-Tabuelan, for example, motabang sa taga-Moalboal,”

– Andrei “Red” Duterte, 5th district Provincial Board Member (Chairman of the committee on tourism)

Some COVID-19 vaccines to start Final Tests on July

There are at least 100 experimental vaccines being studied for the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

We are halfway through the year 2020 and finally some good news are being brought up.

Moderna Inc. and the National Institutes of Health

A vaccine developed by Moderna Inc. and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will be tested in 30,000 people in the US. Their final test involves real shots and dummy shots and then carefully comparing which group winds up with the most infections.

Sinovac Biotech

Sinovac Biotech turned to São Paulo Brazil for at least part of its final testing, with it being the epicenter of Latin America’s outbreak. Sinovac will starts its experimental vaccine tests to 9,000 Brazilians starting next month.

There’s still a lot of COVID-19 potential vaccines that are in their early stages of testing. The NIH expects to help several additional shots move into those final, large-scale studies this summer.

Another one of great potential is the one made by Oxford University that’s also being tested in a few thousand volunteers in Brazil.

These experimental shots are from the word itself “experimental” — there is no guarantee but we can only pray and hope for the best.

Best outcome, “there will be potential to get answers” on which vaccines work by the end of the year, says Dr. John Mascola, who directs NIH’s vaccine research center.

Anytime Fitness Gyms in Cebu prepare for the ‘new normal’

COVID-19 has not only taken lives, but also businesses. One of the most affected businesses during this pandemic are the gyms or fitness clubs since these facilities are prohibited to operate, even under general community quarantine (GCQ).

Though this has saddened the gym members, we’re also elated to see fitness “home” routines by these enthusiasts. However, we have to ready ourselves for the new normal, and that means going back to the gym for the real deal.

One fitness gym in Cebu has been preparing to ensure safety among their patrons.

Anytime Fitness clubs at Cebu Business Park and Oakridge, Mandaue want to ensure your safety hence, these preparations. According to a post on Facebook by Club Manager Janice Rosello, they will see you soon!

“Your safety is our priority! Social distancing is mandatory! See you soon our beloved members!”

They have placed marks to remind you of social distancing and have ensured members to sanitize the whole gym every now and then.

Prepare yourselves and your minds to go back to the gym to finish your routines. Let’s sweat off the weight we’ve gained during quarantine.

There’s no official announcement yet on the reopening of Anytime Fitness gym clubs in Cebu. But they might reopen this July 2020 or as soon as Cebu will be placed under MGCQ.

LOOK: ‘Light pillars’ appear in Daanbantayan, Cebu

On Saturday night, a resident from Daanbantayan, northern Cebu was able to capture the light pillars, or columns of light beaming to the sky.

In a Facebook post, netizen John Reco Estrera shared that the light pillars last appeared on October 30, 2019 at the same place in Brgy. Maya, at the same time at 9:00PM.

“Oh Light Pillars, I knew you’d come back.”

– John Reco Estrera, Photographer

Light pillars are an optical phenomenon caused when light is refracted by ice crystals. These lights tend to take on the color of the light source.

“They appear as beams of light to the observer. It is usually caused by street lights. However, any source of light can create a light pillar given proper conditions,”

– AccuWeather Meteorologist David Samuhel

Samuhel said the pillars occur under high pressure without any storm present.

“There is no tie between storms and the pillars,” Samuhel said. “A storm system would disrupt the pillar formation with wind and precipitation.”

According to AccuWeather, the source of most pillars are man-made, for example street lights and other ground light sources. They differ from auroras for many reasons, but most people have heard of auroras because they cover a much larger area.
