Excel at Work with MS Excel: Simple Guide for Every Working Adult’s Favorite App

We learned it on our computer classes back in high school and admittedly took for granted (I, myself included), only for us to haunt us again in our day to day lives as a working adult.

Whatever your profession is, Microsoft Excel is a very useful tool that can make your tasks a lot simpler. If you’re one of those who took learning this for granted back in the day, then read though this guide to get you started how to use this miraculous tool.

Initially released back in 1987 by Windows as a spreadsheet program. It quickly became popular and since its usage, it maintained its status as a household, or in some occasions, office-hold brand. Today,

MS Excel is a wonderful application with thousands of features and hundreds of ribbon commands. With all these numerous clicks and presses and formulas you need to be wary of, it is very easy to get confused or simply get lost while navigating the app. Understanding the basic skills is key to survival and eventual mastery of Excel.

THE FIVE MAIN AREAS OF AN EXCEL SPREADSHEET

When you open Excel, there are 5 important areas in the screen that you should take note of: the quick access toolbar, ribbon, formula bar, spreadsheet grid and status bar.

  • Quick Access Toolbar – like most applications, this is the place where you can see the important tools you will use while navigating Excel. Some of the important tools include, Save, Undo, Redo and many more. What’s great about this is that you can actually customize this toolbar by adding your favorite tools and features.
  •  Ribbon – this tool is like an expanded menu containing the features of Excel, where sub-features are further grouped in several ribbons. Ribbons like Home, Insert, Formulas, Page Layout and Data are some of the most important ones.
  • Formula Bar – one of the greatest reasons why Excel is a miracle tool is how you can input a variety of formulas to execute operations based on your needs. Entering and creating formulas is one of the very complex operations you will learn once you get into them.
  • Spreadsheet Grid – this is considered the body of the tool, where all the numbers, data, charts and drawings go. Categorized by rows and columns and where each unit is called a cell, inputing information in Excel is limitless. Each Excel file can contain more than one sheet, where you can navigate each sheet at the bottom with the corresponding sheet names (Sheet1, for example).
  • Status Bar – this is where you can see what is currently happening in your Excel application at any time. In real time, Excel tells you if it is currently calculating a formula, recording a macro or loading some data through this bar.

ENTERING AND FORMATTING DATA

Once you finally get a hang about the five major parts of the Excel screen, it is time to get into the very reason why one would use Excel: entering and handling data. It’s a good thing that Excel is a very intuitive when entering and handling data and because of its grid nature, storing and managing lots of data is very easy.

If you want to enter a data, on the worksheet you can click on a cell. It will then allow you to enter a number or text and once you are done, hit ENTER or TAB. You can enter a new line within a cell by pressing ALT+ENTER.

If you’ll notice, the cells may seem that their sizes are fixed but you can actually the sizes their widths and heights directly by the columns and rows. By dragging the column and row heads, you can adjust the sizes of the cells.

Formatting data can be a very lengthy process but we will focus on formatting numbers as part of the basics. On the Home tab, in the Number group, you can click on an arrow next to the Number Format box. From there you can click the format you desire.

If you want to format a number as a text, select an empty cell and by following the process above, in the Number Format box, you can select Text.

USING FORMULAS

Formulas are what make Excel a superior tool because without it, the whole program would just be a massive storage for data. The following are the most basic formulas that will help you get started with Excel.

  1. SUM – as the name would suggest, this formula allows you to add the values located in the selected cells.

2. AVERAGE – this function allows you to get the average number of the provided numbers.

3. COUNT – this function gives you the number of selected cells that contain only numeric values.

Photo from excelhub.org

4. COUNTA – similar with the COUNT function but in this one, it will count all the cells regardless of type. Remember that in COUNT, it will only consider cells with numeric values but in COUNTA it disregards that factor.

5. IF – they say that Excel is somewhat learning how to code, and that is kinda true. IF function also exists in Excel, where you get to sort and manipulate data with a given logic. You can also combine other formulas and functions while using the IF function.

Photo from excelhub.org

6. TRIM – this function ensures that you will not get errors due to unruly spaces as it eliminates empty spaces within cells. Take note that this function only works on a single cell.

7. MAX & MIN – this helps you to find the maximum and the minimum number in a range of cells.

Getting From Mactan Airport To Anywhere Else: A Guide

Getting to a new and unfamiliar place may be, to many, an exciting and thrilling adventure but can also be a confusing and puzzling experience. So many questions fill up in your head, especially if you don’t have someone with you that is familiar with the place, and one of those questions would be, ā€œhow do I get from here to this place in my goals?ā€ as travelling is always a constant movement and a constant flow.

Luckily, this guide is here to help you out.

White and Yellow Taxis

Taxis or cabs are always the standard go to vehicles when travelling as it can lead you to specific locations. Here in Cebu, there are two different-colored taxis: the white taxi and the yellow taxi.

The yellow taxi is also called an airport taxi because, as the name implies, it is available in the airport and is suitable to your needs, especially when your needs include tons and tons of baggage. The yellow taxi is capable of fitting in many bags and lead you to your hotel or vacation home as smoothly as it can. However, it is much pricier than the standard white taxis, having a mark up totaling to P70 starting fare, compared to the P40 of the white taxi.

The white taxi is the standard between the two and can be found anywhere else. There are a lot of them so availability is not an issue although it can be at times, especially during rush hours. Some of the taxis might refuse to go to a specific location possibly because of heavy and concentrated traffic jams to where you’re going, so always be sure to tell where you’re going to first. It starts up on P40.

The both of them are based on their meters and are available for 24 hours. If you’re confused about which one to pick, basically: if you have a lot of luggage and not too picky on prices, you can opt for yellow taxis. If you have a considerably small luggage and concerned on your budget, then pick the white ones.

Note that pregnant women, elderly, and guests with kids have a priority lane in the airport.

  • Fare To SM: P200 – P250 during normal traffic

MyBus

cebu mybus free rides
Photo from MyBus Facebook Page

The MyBus is a fairly recent option for transportation but unlike the taxi, it cannot take you to a very specific address that you would like to go to. Instead, from the airport, you can take the MyBus to go to the SM City Cebu in the North Reclamation Area. To the unfamiliar, SM City Cebu is one of the many malls in Cebu and is very prominent and convenient for it has its own terminal which can then lead you to your destination. Although, if you’d like, the MyBus also stops at certain locations.

MyBus Stops (From Mactan Airport To SM City Cebu):

  • Island Central Mall
  • Maayo Medical Center and Hotel
  • City Times Square/Big Hotel
  • Mantawi International Drive Across Chong Hua Hospital
  • Mantawi International Drive Near MO2 Restobar
  • North Bus Terminal
  • Fare to SM City Cebu is P40

(fare could go less depending on the distance)

The MyBus has a queue outside the airport so be sure to line up ahead. There are also other MyBus routes going to different places so be sure to check it out.

Yellow Multicab

If you want to feel the typical Cebuano experience or tight on budget (which is also a typical Cebuano experience), you can opt for the Yellow Multicabs found outside the airport. Be wary as multicabs are narrow vehicles so big luggages are not suitable as it will take up a lot of space. Again, note that this is not advisable if you are bringing a lot of things. Also be aware that these cabs follow routes, so expect a lot of transferring to other vehicles.

These cabs can go to

Budbod Kabog: Catmon’s Version of Suman

Filipinos have their own taste when it comes to desserts, with rice as one of the staple ingredients when making them. Puto, biko, budbod ā€“ you name it; all of these are all-time Filipino classics loved by all ages. In the northern part of Cebu, specifically in Catmon, a unique take in making budbod.

What makes this northern Cebuano delicacy is that instead of rice, the budbod kabog uses millet or locally known as kabog. This crop is very abundant in the mountains of Catmon, where residents of the area discovered that the small-seeded plant is edible and a perfect alternative for other grains.

Local folklore says that the kabog or the millet grass was discovered by a farmer inside a cave in Barangay Agsuwao in Catmon. He then took the millet seeds back home and cooked them but upon realizing that they were almost flavorless and had a coarse texture, he experimented and eventually came up with the budbod kabog recipe locals now enjoy.

Budbod kabog is so iconic in Catmon mainly because they also hold a festival for it, the Budbod Kabog Festival. True to its name, the festival honors how this savory sweet treat is made by performing an eight-step dance representing the processes of making the budbod kabog namely:

  • First Step – the ā€œKabhidā€ or the act of bending to plant the kabog seeds on the ground.
  • Second Step – the ā€œBugawā€ or the act of shooing birds away before they consume the seeds that are to be harvested.
  • Third Step – the ā€œHakotā€ or the act of harvesting the seeds.
  • Fourth Step – the ā€œGi-okā€ or the act of separating the grain from the stalk.
  • Fifth Step – the ā€œAsodā€ or the act of pounding the shell from the grain.
  • Sixth Step – the ā€œAlig-igā€ or the act of separating the grain from the shell using an oblong container or the ā€œhapag.ā€
  • Seventh Step – the ā€œPasikoā€ or the act of cooking the budbod kabog.
  • Eighth Step – the ā€œKilikitiā€ or the act of wrapping the delicacy in banana leaves.

HOW TO MAKE BUDBOD KABOG

The ingredients listed below can produce up to 10 pieces of budbod kabog, so feel free to adjust the ratio depending on how much you want.

  • 1 cup of kabog/millet, washed
  • 1&1/2c coconut milk
  • 1/2c coconut milk
  • 3/4c light brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract(optional)

Prepare the 1 cup of kabog, already washed and place it in a bowl. Soak the kabog with water and leave it overnight. Then, once you can see that the kabog particles have become gooey, in a heating pan, place the one and a half cup of coconut milk then mixed with the soaked kabog. Make sure to stir the mixture together before cooking it in low heat for about 5 to 8 minutes. You will then notice that it starts to rise.

While in the pan, stir the cooked kabog to make sure that they are evenly cooked. In a separate pan, add the additional one-half cup of coconut milk, three-fourths cup of light brown sugar and the one-fourth teaspoon of salt. Cook under low heat and occasionally stir as soon as you see bubbles rising. Once it gets thick, add a half teaspoon of vanilla extract and stir. Then, add the cooked kabog to the pan with the syrup, cook in medium heat until the liquid evaporates.

Once that is done, prepare the wrapping for the budbod kabog. Banana leaves are the most popular packaging for this delicacy and make sure to expose it under heat before using it. Place the budbod kabog in the banana leaves, and roll it, similar how to make lumpia.

Lastly, add the packed budbod kabog into a steamer and cook under medium heat for about an hour. The budbod kabog is now ready to be served.

Notable Mayors of Cebu City & Their Works: A Brief History

Cebu City is a magnificent city rich with culture and history. In fact, it is actually the oldest city in the Philippines, being the first Spanish settlement and the nation’s first capital. Now, Cebu City is populated with skyscrapers left and right. You can have almost anything in the city as there are a lot of things readily available.

Want to have a party? Mango Avenue is right there for you. Want to go to the mall and ice skate? SM Seaside has their doors open for that. It even now has an oceanarium, making it a delight to live in.

However, this city did not just instantly turn into what it is now in a quick snap. It has been evolving slowly but surely with the help of its leaders, the mayors. Thus, it is appropriate to give credit where credit is due and appreciate what they have done for the city. Here are some of the most notable mayors throughout history.
