Experiencing mild symptoms? Here’s what you should do!

In anticipation of the exponential rise in COVID-19 cases, the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) announced Metro Manila’s transition to Alert Level 3 starting tomorrow until January 15.

What is the Omicron variant?

The Omicron (B.1.1.529) Variant is a mutated COVID-19 virus first described in
South Africa last November 2021. Initial studies associate the Omicron Variant to
have evading immune protection and increased transmissibility.

When a virus circulates widely and causes numerous infections, the likelihood of a
virus mutating increases. The more opportunities a virus has to spread, the more opportunities it has to undergo changes.

The GOOD news?

Omicron cases have been documented to be mild, especially among those vaccinated and boosted, and vaccines and boosters do work.

The NOT-SO-GOOD news?

People who experience mild symptoms can easily transmit the virus when minimum public health standards (MPHS) are not diligently followed. Healthcare workers with
breakthrough infections will still need to undergo full 10-day isolation even if symptoms are mild – that means our hospitals are at risk of being understaffed again.

Hence, the Department of Health (DOH) calls on everyone to be “agents of compassion”, not “agents of transmission.” DOH urges the public to have the utmost concern for our health workers, for kids and sick people, and for the people around us.

Important Reminders:

  • If you are exposed, get yourself tested with the RIGHT TEST at the RIGHT TIME. Antigen tests help you determine the need to isolate but it has its limitations. It is most accurate when used by anyone experiencing symptoms.
  • While waiting for test results or when confirmed positive, ISOLATE, ISOLATE, and ISOLATE. Once confirmed, isolate for full 10 days from symptom onset (if with symptoms) or from time test was taken (if asymptomatic)
  • If you have been exposed to a suspect or confirmed COVID-19 case, don’t take this lightly. Automatically QUARANTINE for 7 days, if vaccinated; for 14 days, if not vaccinated.
  • Mind your mental health while isolated or in quarantine – download and use the Lusog-Isip App – it’s free!
  • If you have mild symptoms, use DOH-provided checklists to care for yourself at home. Get professional advice from telemedicine hotlines or primary care facilities especially when are fully vaccinated and boosted already. This shall help in keeping our hospital beds open for severe and critical COVID-19 cases, children who are not yet vaccinated as well as other patients suffering from non-COVID illnesses.

Omicron Variant Symptoms

Cold-like symptoms were the most commonly reported by those with the novel Omicron variety, according to early data provided on December 16 by the COVID Symptoms Study, which is run by the health science business Zoe and King’s College London.

Below are the top 5 symptoms reported:

  • Runny nose
  • Headache
  • Fatigue (moderate or severe)
  • Sneezing
  • Sore throat

Hans Kluge, the World Health Organization’s senior official in Europe, noted that 89% of patients in Europe with confirmed Omicron infections had symptoms similar to other coronavirus variations, such as cough, sore throat, and fever.

According to medical experts, the signs of Omicron infection in vaccinated persons may be much less than those who are unvaccinated, which could lead to instances being ignored.

ARE COVID-19 VACCINES EFFECTIVE AGAINST OMICRON VARIANT?

Yes. COVID-19 vaccines are effective for severe and critical forms of illness
caused by Omicron variant, which leads to hospitalization and death.

Sudden rise of cases

The Department of Health (DOH) reported 4,600 additional cases of COVID-19 cases on Sunday, January 2. The top regions with most cases in the recent two weeks were the National Capital Region (NCR) with 3,729 or 72 percent; Calabarzon, 676 or 15 percent; and Region 3 (Central Luzon), 252 or 6 percent of the new cases.

With the detection of the imported cases of Omicron variant, the Department also urges everyone to adhere to the minimum public standards and properly wear face masks, frequently wash hands with soap and water or alcohol, observe physical distancing, ensure proper ventilation, and avoid crowded areas.

We need to sustainably cut transmission through a combination of vaccination
and booster shots once eligible, diligent practice of mask-hugas-iwas-airflow, and early isolation if with symptoms. These actions have been effective against other
variants.

Sugboanons, let’s do our part to avoid locking down. Compassion, not transmission.

The ‘We Bare Bears’ are back as Baby Bears!

Our favorite bear trio is back!

Their awkward attempts at integrating with the human world in the San Francisco Bay Area and fun social interactions made them a fan favorite not only by children but adults as well.

Let us introduce the three bears in case you haven’t met them yet. Grizz is known to be bubbly, hyperactive, loud, and talkative, while Panda is neurotic, artistic, and something of a drama king and Ice Bear is a character that is almost always distant and emotionless and speaks epic one-liners.

Now the cuteness doesn’t stop there as they are back as babies! Yes, cutie baby bears will fill up our screens.

This spin-off is titled “We Baby Bears” which follows Grizz, Panda and Ice Bear as their baby selves.  The bear siblings travel around the world in search of a “home” and along the way, meet and make new friends.

Their 2-episode premiere is on Saturday, January 8 at 10:30 AM on Cartoon Network followed by a new episode that will premiere every subsequent Saturday.

The original theme song for “We Baby Bears” is performed by TRI.BE who speaks and sings in Chinese, English, Japanese, and Korean. This decision of a quadrilingual group to sing the ost is perfect to convey their message of inclusivity and acceptance according to Amy Friedman, the Head of Kids & Family Programming, Warner Bros.

We Baby Bears featured guest stars includes:

  • Anjali Bhimani
  • Rhys Darby
  • Janeane Garofalo
  • Young M.A.
  • Jason Mantzoukas
  • Stephen Oyoung
  • Willow Smith
  • Bernardo Velasco

As all animated and cartoon shows, lessons are embedded in every episode and we bare bears have always had inclusivity. This time with their younger selves, one of its final lessons to be imparted is for them to realize that “home” can mean wherever they are, as long as they’re together.

Bea Gomez sports new short hairstyle, organizes relief effort in Cebu

0

The queen is back in the Queen City of the South and surprises us with her new look.

Fresh from her Top 5 win in the Miss Universe pageant, the Philippines’ bet Beatrice Luigi Gomez was seen in the airport last week with her new short hairstyle and she looks amazing.

On December 30, the beauty queen arrived in Cebu but instead of the traditional lavish homecoming, Beatrice chose to spend time with her family and then headed to the Naval Reserve Center in Cebu to assist with the relief effort for victims of Super Typhoon Odette.

Prior to her arrival in Cebu, the 26-year-old beauty queen collaborated with SimplyShare Foundation Inc. and the Naval Reserve Center Eastern Visayas to raise funds to respond to the calamity and “bring back hope and light to [her] fellow Sugboanons.”

There have been widespread flooding and destruction of roads, public structures like schools and markets, as well as livelihood assets and agricultural crops. Houses in coastal communities were flattened and power and communication lines were damaged.

– Beatrice Luigi Gomez on a Facebook post

Bea added that the children’s access to food, shelter, education, health services, water and sanitation, and hygiene, have been heavily impacted and are causing psychosocial distress to children and their caregivers. Many of them are already on the brink of hunger and at risk of getting sick from diseases and the COVID-19 virus.

You can make a life-saving donation at bit.ly/SaveChildrenOdette or through www.savethechildren.org.ph. You may also refer your companies who may want to support Save the Children Philippines’ Typhoon Odette emergency response by sending an email to [email protected].

Cebuana singer Sheryn Regis comes out as lesbian

Sheryn Regis has come out as a lesbian in her recent interview with Ogie Diaz on YouTube last December 26, 2021.

Sheryn, 42, rose to fame as a finalist alongside Erik Santos in the Search for the Star in a Million singing competition in 2003. She is a pop singer-songwriter and an entrepreneur that hails from our very own Carcar City here in Cebu.

She came out to the world as part of the LGBTQ+ community, but more importantly is that she came out to her ex-partner, Earl Echiverri (Tito Earl), and her daughter, Sweety, and was accepted whole-heartedly.

“Sabi ko sa kanya, ‘Tito Earl, I am a lesbian. I’m living a lie. Not just to you, not just to the family, a lie sa sarili ko rin.”- Sheryn Regis

She said that she denied it and thought that maybe it was the reason for her depression and her thyroid cancer, life testing her so she felt the need to tell the truth abput her to her partner then.

Sheryn even says that she became selfish in a way as she was mother to Sweety but wasn’t a wife to Echiverri and had trouble accepting who she was.

Her and Echiverri she stills talks every day and have remain married, as appealed by their daughter saying that she doesn’t want them divorced and be a child without a mom and dad together. Her daughter also told her that she knew and it doesn’t make her mother less of a person.

Sheryn now has a girlfriend, the YouTuber Mel de Guia.

She has been the voice behind several teleserye theme songs since, including  This year, she released her first original song after a decade of being away from the Philippines.

“Hindi ko kayang iwan ka” and “Coming in out of the rain” were two of her most popular songs and of course she was the teleserye OST queen with “Gulong ng Palad” and “Maria Flordeluna.”

Now, she has an original song released titled “Tulad ng Dati”, which you might want to listen to.

Viral: Netizen shares DIY Wind Energy using a ceiling fan to power gadgets

Ingenuity comes from necessity.

It was proven again as Janine Jorolan Babor posted on Facebook their energy source using just a ceiling fan.

The super typhoon Odette left Cebu and other parts of Visayas and Mindanao with great damages that it has been more than a week with no electricity.

Well, this Cebuana shared a very useful power hack with those who don’t have a generator. You just need 3 things: wind, ceiling fan/electric fan, and an extension wire.

Steps:

  1. Place the ceiling fan or electric fan in front of strong winds.
  2. Plug it in your extension wire.
  3. Let it have its time with the wind.
  4. Then plug your charger to your extension wire and you can now charge your phone.
  5. The extension wire doesn’t need to be plugged anywhere.

Note: Use working ceiling fans and not damaged ones for it to work. Wind turbines use blades to collect the wind’s kinetic energy.

The people of Cebu have always been resilient. We hope that this will work for you and help you get through this crisis.
