You’ve probably seen memes of “Binignit” flooding everyone’s timeline just in time for Holy Week.
Binignit has become a staple for Filipinos during Holy Week. But of course, that’s not the only dish being consumed during Lenten Season. During Lent, sacrifice, and abstinence are observed, meaning there are foods that Filipinos avoid, much like meat. Which begs the question, what do Pinoys eat during Holy Week?
From rice dishes to alternatives for meat, here are some common foods consumed during Lenten Season in the Philippines.
During Holy Week, Filipinos abstain from eating meat, which is why they opt for Fish dishes. Some fish dishes include Adobong Isda, Paksiw, and Kinilaw, among others.
Binignit is the star of the show every Holy Week. The dish is made with Taro, Ube, Bananas, Sweet Potatoes, and fresh Coconut Milk. It is sweet, sticky, and filling as well. Some people put glutinous rice and tapioca pearls.
Fun Fact: Binignit is also called bilo-bilo or ginataang Halo-Halo in Manila.
Biko is a famous Filipino rice cake made from “malagkit” or sticky rice, coconut milk, and brown sugar. The texture is soft and chewy, and it tastes sweet. Some versions have “latik” paired with it. Latik is a thick, sweet coconut syrup with coconut milk and sugar.
Sipo or Sepo Eggs is a popular dish in Pampanga during the Lenten season. The reason why it is popular is that it does not contain any meat. The main ingredient for Sipo Eggs is the “Itlog Pugo” or Quail Eggs. It also has shrimp, carrots, and green peas. The dish is creamy because of the cream sauce mixed with it.
And, of course, the Pinoy favorite— Tuyo or Buwad. Tuyo is a salted, dried fish that Filipinos usually fry in oil. Tuyo is best paired with rice or even champorado. In Visayas, Tuyo is known as buwad, and in Cebu, there are many kinds of buwad you can try, such as Danggit, Fish Tapa & Fish Bones, Pinikas, and Dried Pusit or Squid.

Ever wondered what the events of the “Stations of the Cross” looked like? Then, you might want to head to the TanChan Celestial Garden to find out—the Tanchan Celestial Garden, locally known as the Good Shepherd, is nestled in the hills of Banawa.
It has a “Station of the Cross” with life-like statues of Jesus’ experiences before his crucifixion.
There’s also a cemetery in the area. However, it is not at all scary; it is actually serene.

Of course, our list is not complete without the famous Simala Shrine. It is also known as the Miraculous Castle Church.
If you are looking for a solemn place to meditate and reflect spiritually, Simala Shrine is the place to visit. In the monastery, candles are being sold. Each candle corresponds to different wishes and prayers.
The view and the castle itself are breathtaking. Looking at the castle church, it’s like the sun shines on the blessed Virgin Mary. However, it is also important to remember that the place is still sacred, so visitors or devotees must wear decent clothes.

Basilica del Santo Niño de Cebu is the oldest Catholic Church in Cebu. It is the home of Sto. Niño and is a place of solemnity.
The church’s location is the same place where the Spaniard Troupe found the image of Sto. Niño.
Inside the church, you will find statues of different saints and other symbols of Christianity. There are also women on the church grounds who offer prayers for you. Moreover, you will find the famous Magellan’s cross just outside the church.

The Nuestra Señora Del Patrocinio De Maria Parish Church in Boljoon is a National Historical Landmark in Cebu. The church is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, so all the items relate to the Mother of Jesus.
The church’s interior sports a beautiful and rustic design. The altar is furnished with gold which makes the statues shine. Moreover, the exterior looks like it is frozen in time.

Meet four outstanding Cebuana entrepreneurs who are shaping Cebu’s economy, one client at a time. These women are feisty and are unafraid to take that leap of faith. In this pilot write-up for the new Sugboprenerus, they will share how truly fulfilling and empowering it is to “Work Like a Girl.”
From selling dried flower decoratives online to owning her restaurant, Victoria Tancinco is slaying as a “Foodtrepreneur.” 25-year-old Victoria Tancinco graduated from De La Salle College in Benilde. She was a Hotel Restaurant and Management Student.
Victoria shared with us that studying and living in Manila made her independent and that she learned how to get around alone. Her business venture started during the pandemic when she established an online business called “Cortaderia by Victoria.” The shop sells customized dried flower pieces.
She also started a milk tea business before officially opening her restaurant. Then, without knowing anything about business, Victoria took the risk and opened “Polita,” her little restaurant.
Despite the challenges she faces, Victoria fought so hard for Polita. But, of course, opening a business comes with challenges. The young entrepreneur said during the interview that she made decisions that were not good for the business, yet she did not let herself drown in regret.
“Each day, I wake up regretting, but what else is there to do than to get back up” She expressed. “If things are always going well, you won’t be able to learn,” the restaurant owner continued.
Not only is Victoria, a good entrepreneur, but she is also a good boss to her employees. Her father always tells her, “If you take care of your staff, they take care of your business.” So her goal is not to get rich but to provide jobs for people who need them.
Victoria sends a message to all aspiring young entrepreneurs, “You have to study everything before getting into it. The world is your classroom. You will learn from experiences and meet new people”. She also stresses that creating a good rapport between you and your clients is always essential.
Do you think there is a thing such as a “spontaneous” career choice? Because that’s precisely how this 26-year-old chose her profession.
Dr. Melissa Manglapus is the owner of Metro Smile. The doctor of smiles gladly shared with Sugboph how she spontaneously decided to be a dentist after high school. From there, she fell in love with the art of Dentistry, which made her the fantastic dentist she is today.
She worked for a dental clinic in Cebu for two years but resigned to help with the family business. Being away from her profession made her realize she wanted to open her own clinic.
According to Dr. Melissa, establishing a business was difficult at first because there were a lot of dental clinics in Cebu already. However, she slowly gained clients, and it went on from there.
She also experienced challenges as a young dentist. Patients would be skeptical about getting her services because she looked young, but she gave them the best service. She also emphasizes how she earns trust and takes care of them.
Because of her hard work and determination, she established Metro Smile as it is today. She can also now buy materials for her clinic with her hard-earned money.
“If you start with small goals, the more you accomplish them and the more fulfilling they become,” was what the young Dentist said when asked to give tips to dental students going through the challenges of dentistry.
She also inspires fellow women not to be afraid of their passion, “Do not be afraid to become a girl boss as long as you know what you are passionate about.”
Dr. Melissa Manglapus is giving people the confidence to smile one tooth at a time.
Some people like the idea of independence when it comes to growth and success, but this next entrepreneur is proud to say that her husband is her pillar of strength as she enters the world of business.
Denesse Yu owns an Asian Fusion restaurant called “Hachimitsu.” Hachimitsu is one of the popular places to enjoy Unli-Yakiniku, with a view of the Queen City of the South. But what people do not know is that the restaurant had a humble beginning.
Denesse Yu grew up loving her father’s cooking, ultimately leading to her interest in cooking. In an interview with Sugboph, she revealed that she established Hachimitsu after marriage.
She loves to cook for her husband and sees that she gives him the best meals every single day. Her husband loves her cooking so much that he encouraged her to go to culinary school.
After culinary school, she took a leap of faith and started a food tray and food pack business before establishing her Yakiniku restaurant. As she began operations, she faced dilemmas along the way.
She truthfully shared that she was unprepared. She used to do everything from cooking, and being the purchaser. Her husband was also the one operating the cash register. The journey was treacherous, but it all worked out in the end. Denesse thanks the Lord today for guiding her throughout the process.
The entrepreneur also stressed that what she gained from her business was her relationship with her husband. She said having people you can lean on and depend on is good.
“Just do it” those three words are what Denesse Yu carries to heart, and those three words came from her husband.
“Don’t over-analyze things, don’t overthink them. If you want to start to do it, start small. You make mistakes, but along the way, you will be successful as long as you are humble enough to move forward.”

Women are masters of design, and Roselane Tochip is proof. Roselane Tochip is one of the owners of Liña Design Studio, an interior design firm in Cebu.
Roselane’s passion for interior design made her realize she wanted to start her own design firm. Ever since she graduated and took the board exam, she knew she wanted to take up interior design. She worked for a company based in Cebu for four years before leaving her job and starting a business.
She met one of her good friends, Architect Manzano, and they mutually agreed to work together and start Liña Design Studio. Believe it or not, Roselane and Architect Manzao had zero capital. But that did not stop them from providing quality design by Cebuanos for Cebuanos.
But just like other business owners, Roselane also experienced a major setback during the pandemic. However, she expressed how she was still thankful because they still had ongoing projects.
Because of how they care for their clients, people who acquired their services trusted them to do the projects.
Since opening Liña Design Studio, Roselane and her team have been able to take the stairs of success, one step at a time. They joined an international interior design contest and won first place, talk about talent!
Roselane shared with us that one of their most significant accomplishment is being able to home the skills of their apprentices and make their clients happy,
Like Roselane, many aspiring entrepreneurs, especially women who want to take up interior design, are afraid to go out there and begin. However, Roselane stated that they should not be afraid. She tells everyone, especially women, that they are not in any way different from male architects and contractors.
“We are equipped with the same knowledge and wisdom they have.” The young interior designer also empowers women to “Not be intimidated by men in the workplace.” Of course, there will be discrimination but not enough to make you feel less of yourself. Instead, use that discrimination to rise above and succeed in a male-dominated profession.
Women are warriors, dreamers, and doers. They will stop at nothing to reach their goals. Having womenpreneurs is amazing and such a big deal. Society is now changing, and the business world is from now on and forever will be Women-forward.

SERVICE WATER: Filtered spring water for drinking. There’s no bottled water for sale.
ICE: ice is for sale at 5.00 per small ice bag subject to availability.

GRILL AREA: There’s a designated grilling area, you can bring your own charcoal or purchase at the staff store.

INTERNET CONNECTION: There’s intermittent 1 to 2 bars signal for Globe, Smart, and TM. There’s Smart wifi connection at the farm and cafe, but sometimes unstable. Bring back up GLOBE or TM sim incase Smart network is down in the area.
PRENUPS / PHOTOSHOOTS: We don’t have special package or rates for prenups or photoshoot alone, since we cannot let other guests in while place is already booked. You may avail the “AFTERNOON FROLIC PACKAGE” to grant you access and use of the entire place. In line with this, since you will have crews (photographers, MUA, stylist,etc) coming along, we only charge them 150 per head for entrance since plainly doing the shoot. Additional payment may be for additional food and drinks, and 700 per head if will use same inclusions/amenities as paying guests.
VISITORS: Only Guests staying overnight are allowed to enter the Farm premises. If you have visitor/s, kindly entertain them outside the Farm gate or at the Cafe. If they enter the premises, a fixed rate of 150.00 (crew/staff) or 600.00 (with 1 meal & use of amenities for day use visitors) will be charged as an Entry Fee per head and should be up to 8pm only. If your Visitor/s will stay over 8pm charges will be at full rate as an additional overnight staying Guest.

*50% refund for cancelations or rebooking made at least 7 days before check-in.

SENIOR OR WHEELCHAIR FRIENDLY: Walkways are a combination of ramp and steps due to its sloping terrain. From parking and gate, about 40 meters to the main hut. More walking as well within the premises for other amenities. 2 of the tents are just near the bathrooms for convenience. Not wheelchair friendly as pathways are combined with steps.

BY BUS: For commuting guests, a bus ride from the city’s North Terminal and getting off at Carmen Public Market is the easiest way. The farm is located in Barangay Sacon, 10km from the National Highway and is about a 30minute drive of uphills & downhills, river crossing & a single-lane rough road experience before arriving. There are no regular public transit system going to Barangay Sacon from the town proper, however Motorcycles for hire “habal-habal’’ are readily available for a P50 per head, minimum of 2 per trip. Most of the motorcycle drivers are familiar with the fenced farm, few meters from the MLhuillier’s Safari back gate going to Barangay Lanipga.

You’ve probably seen videos about beaches with sand that light up a beautiful blue color. However, most people do not know that the blue-glowing sand is because of bioluminescent Plankton. Indeed, after seeing those videos, we added another item to our bucket list.
Are you ready to mark your list with a check? Frolic on the bioluminescent sands on a beach in the Southern Part of Cebu.
Locals reported seeing blue-glowing sands nestled in a serene and secluded beach in the locale. The locals described the sight as something similar to the Maldives.
Apparently, the beach is owned by a Filipino businessman who has since Migrated to the US. The only person left to care for the area is the businessman’s trusted caretaker. They also welcome guests who wish to stay and experience the radiant seashore.
But reaching the area takes work. Interested guests will have to do a 10-minute walk on a treacherous path to arrive at the bioluminescent paradise. But don’t worry; upon arriving at the barangay where the beach is located, you can head to their barangay hall and ask for a guide.

There’s no need to travel far to see the famous Mickey because the family-favorite Mouse is coming to you. The Disney Cruise Line and Singapore Tourism Board announced on March 29 that they are bringing a new and exclusive Disney Cruise to Singapore in 2025.
According to Josh D’Amaro, Disney Park experiences, and products chairman, “This is a very exciting year for The Walt Disney Company- 2023 marks our 100th anniversary”. He also stated that the Disney Cruise Line is undergoing an expansion with new ships and new destinations worldwide as part of their ambitious expansion.
With this expansion, Singapore and other South East Asian countries, such as the Philippines experience the Disney Cruise ship.
As per Kieth Tan, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) chief executive, bringing Disney Cruise to Singapore will boost its tourism sector.
Guests should anticipate the different attractions such as the Disney Kid Clubs, Broadway-style shows, interactive character moments, themed restaurants, and more.
