The Cebuano: What it Takes to be a Tank Mermaid

Sometimes, the most mundane people bring the most joy to our hearts.”

Have you ever come across videos of live-action mermaids with their beautiful tails? There’s just something so mesmerizing about them that heals our inner child. Beauty and Grace are two words we can use to describe tank mermaids. However, there is more to them than just the surface.

Cebu also has its tank mermaid— CebuanaSirena or Mermaid Mariae. Mermaid Mariae went viral on Tiktok as she showed a day in the life of a tank mermaid at Cebu Ocean Park. But what does it take to become a tank mermaid? Mermaid Mariae was able to tell us exactly what.

Meet Naomi, aka Mermaid Mariae

Naomi is behind the trending Mermaid Mariae. She was born and raised in Cebu and has been swimming since she was three. Naomi is part of the Bakhaw Adventure Team, a group of free divers in Cebu. Mermaiding is Naomi’s side hustle, and according to her, it takes all the energy she has to balance her time as a mermaid and having a full-time job.

When asked what she likes most about mermaiding, Mermaid Mariae expressed how heartwarming it is to see people of all ages smile. How their eyes shine as if seeing the mermaids are healing their inner child.

A Little Girl’s Dream Turned Reality

Ever since Naomi was a kid, she had always been comfortable in the water. Her mom was a swimming instructor, and she taught Naomi how to swim. Moreover, Naomi dreamed of being a mermaid as a kid, which she brought up until adulthood.

During the pandemic, Naomi had to find a new hobby. She and her partner joined a freediving class in Moalboal. Eventually, they joined the Bakhaw Adventure Team, which established mermaiding in Cebu. The group partnered with Cebu Ocean Park, and that’s when Naomi’s career as a mermaid kicked off.

She and her co-mermaid went to Bali, Indonesia, to get certified as mermaids. Yes, you read that right. They had to do a 3-day training, lecture, pool training, and open water training. They also had to be physically fit in order to become certified.

What Does it Really Take to Do Mermaiding?

Gone are the days when people thought mermaiding is “langoy-langoy lang.”

According to Naomi, mermaiding is physically demanding. It is something that requires training such as breath hold and learning how to be graceful underwater. Even the mermaid tails are quite heavy as well.

“Mermaiding is a hobby and passion, but it also became a career. Even if kapoy, dili gyud nako ma feel nga kapoy. It’s more of a challenge to train myself harder.” –

Naomi, Mermaid Mariae.

Real-Life Disney Princess

Naomi might as well be a real-life Disney princess because she also has a heart of Gold. She and her diving group, the Bakhaw Adventure Team, arrange the “Heart Meal Project” every year, when they cook for homeless people. Not only that, but they also have advocacies such as marine conservation.

You Can Be a Mermaid, too!

Yes, you can become a mermaid too! Mermaid Mariae says that as long as you are comfortable in the water and are willing to train, you can become a mermaid; Even kids can practice.

If you want to start your mermaiding journey, Mermaid Mariae emphasizes the importance of finding a community you can connect and swim with. The number one rule to mermaiding is never to dive alone, so find like-minded people and train with them. Most importantly, enjoy the journey.

Naomi, aka Mermaid Mariae, reminds us that even ordinary Cebuanos can become an instrument of happiness and hope to everyone.

Angkas Riders Earn Up to 40k a Month, Angkas CEO says

Angkas has forever changed the landscape of modern transportation. We have our riders to thank for their services, plus the affordable fare we couldn’t avail if we opt for other private vehicles. With these conditions, a lot of us wonder how much they actually make a month. George Royeca, CEO of Angkas, answers this question.

Photo from Angkas Facebook Page

According to Royeca, riders make an average of Php 40,000 monthly. Some riders even earn 1.5 times or double the average amount. The 30,000 riders of Angkas are very well compensated, and the company even aims to work with PAG-IBIG to give riders housing benefits.

The proposed program envisions the riders to be able to afford a home after 5 years of working with the company. They have also been talking to real estate developers to make this a reality.

Service workers are integral in our society, and they are more than deserving to get the fair compensation that is commensurate with the work that they do. Angkas serves as a great precedent for other companies to provide good salaries and benefits to their service workers who pour their heart and sweat into what they do.

Cat Steals Neighbors Bikinis, Owner Apologizes

Help! An adorable thief!

A cat in Katy, Texas, USA, named Cleo is making people laugh as he has a knack for stealing his neighbor’s expensive undergarments, bikinis, and more. According to his owner, Jean Wheat, Cleo often brought his “loot” inside Jean’s house.

Because of Cleo’s antics, Jean set up a stall outside her house where the neighbors can look for their “stolen” garments and properties. The stall also has a sign that says, “My cat is a thief. Please look through his loot and recover your stuff. He has no remorse, but I apologize on his behalf.”

Cleo’s “Loot”

Jean expressed the “treasures” that Cleo brings to her house, and we can say this cat has quite a taste for luxury.

“He did bring a few T-shirts, a bikini—he brought in two separate days. He often brings home clean folded laundry,”

Jean said.

She also apologized to her neighbors,

“I want to apologize because some of the items he’s brought home in particular, a pair of really nice women’s shapewear, are kind of pricey.”

Jean’s neighbors often tell her Cleo would climb into their house through their window. Moreover, Jean would quickly inform her neighbors that Cleo had brought something home again.

Neighbor’s Reactions

With a thief as adorable as Cleo, neighbors would instead fall in love than get annoyed. Cleo became viral on the neighborhood’s Facebook page. Because of Cleo’s fame, T-shirts were made in her honor and sold to get funds for the local shelter.

If you find a cat stealing your things, how would you react?

Multimedia Arts Student Designs Car-booking App with a Cheaper Fare

Let’s be honest; with the crazy heat and rain, hailing a cab or booking a car ride is our best option. However, some car-booking apps are a bit expensive. In times like these, we just wish Uber was still around since they are fairly cheaper than today’s car-hailing apps.

But a talented student has thought of the same thing. Meet Erwin Dee, a multimedia arts student who will soon launch a car-hailing app, one that is cheaper.

Dee created the app after seeing TikTok posts about how some citizens miss “Uber days.” He wanted to create a solution to make car-hailing fares cheaper again. With his programming background, Dee came up with “Tara.” Tara is a budget-friendly car-hailing app. But that’s not all; the app will give the drivers 100% of the fare.

Photo from Erwin Dee

Tara will be cheaper compared to other car-booking apps since it will comply with LTFRB’s standard fare matrix that does not include surcharges.

Once the Tara app launches and is ready for use, the app won’t only benefit Filipino commuters. The app will also benefit drivers who want to make a living by driving without hidden charges.
