The National Library of the Philippines is not the biggest library in the country; rather, it’s the Josef Baumgartner Learning Resource Center at the University of San Carlos – Talamban Campus.
Inaugurated last 2012, the University of San Carlos Talamban Campus, Josef Baumgartner Learning Resource Center has four floors with split-level and basement floors.
Dedicated to the University Chief Librarian, Fr. Josef Baumgartner, SVD, the establishment costs more than Php 300M to build. It is environment-friendly and PWD-accessible.
Screen grab from USC official website
With a size of 16,000 square meters, the library does provide enough space and avenue for research, learning, and as an extension of the university itself in terms of being an educational function hall. As a one-stop knowledge center, students, faculty, and bibliophiles can access state-of-the art library facilities where new and old books or media can be found.

Cebu is set to hit 50-degrees Celsius for the months of April and May 2024, so it’s only fitting that we get creative with the ways to stay cool; one of which is by enjoying refreshing desserts and beverages!
Photo from Canva
One of the top beverages that Sugboanons enjoy is coffee, be it in the morning or at night. And what better way to enjoy a cup of joe than pairing it with a sweet cake, right? Even tastier when we merge the two to have a bittersweet and caffeinated explosion in your tongue! So, get your freezers ready as we make a no-bake coffee cake to celebrate the holiday named after it: National Coffee Cake Day!
Photo from Canva
INGREDIENTS
1 box of Full Cream Milk
1 can of sweetened condensed milk
2½ sachets of instant black coffee, or more if you prefer more caffeine
Hot water
MY San Grahams biscuits
2 drops of vanilla syrup (optional)
HOW TO PREP
In separate containers, mix the first 2 sachets of instant coffee with hot water. Dissolve the remaining ½ in another container and set it aside till cool.
Once your coffee’s in room temp, mix the cream, vanilla, the dissolved 2 sachets of coffee, and condensed milk all together in a bowl.
Use a hand mixer to form a soft foam of the mixture and set it aside.
In a rectangular pan that can fit your freezer, line the bottom with the Graham biscuits similar to what you do when making mango floats. Then, brush or wet the biscuits with the other half of coffee that was set aside a while ago.
Put a layer of the cream mixture on top of the brushed biscuits.
Repeat the layering of biscuits, brushing coffee, and cream until you reach the top of the pan.
Cover the filled pan with saran wrap and put it in the freezer for at least 5 hours.
You can dust the coffee cake with powdered cocoa or cinnamon, and even add some baby marshmallows on top for a sweeter touch! Regardless, make sure to serve it cold.
A unicorn in the market, said bookseller Ian Kahn.

April 4 marked the celebration for the 64th Annual ABAA New York International Antiquarian Book Fair held at Park Avenue Armory 643 Park Avenue, New York.
Screengrab from NST TV’s Youtube Interview of Ian Kahn
The book fair was intended to be a gathering of bibliophiles and book collectors looking for rare gems. And who would have thought that this year’s event will feature one of the most controversial pieces, similar to what Harvard recently disclosed: a book bound in human skin!
Ian Kahn – Screengrab from NST TV’s Youtube Interview during the Book Fair
According to Lux Mentis bookseller, Ian Kahn, the book is set to a staggering price of $45,000.00! In Philippine peso conversion, the book would be at an estimated 2.5Million Pesos!
A Lover Of Theater Arts
Kahn discussed the history of the book and why it was bound by skin. According to the story given by the family who originally owned the book, it was from a medicine student in Paris who spent his time enjoying theater plays.
During the time the play “Le Baron” was staged in the 1600s, medicine student Jacopo X, became fond of the play to the point that he bought a copy of it in sheets. It was all good and normal, UNTIL the actress of the play died.
Screengrab from NST TV’s Youtube Interview of Ian Kahn
Her death was unknown but her deceased body arrived at the autopsy table of the student because it was unclaimed by any family member. Saddened by the fact that the talents and presence of the actress will forever be gone, the student decided to take matters into his own hands and make sure that the actress’s life will remain in this world.
“He decided to bind the book in a section of her skin to prevent her from being lost forever in a mass grave.”, said Khan. “He took a section of her back, processed it to parchment and bind, what is most likely the last play she performed in, in her skin.” he added during the interview with NST TV.
Screengrab from NST TV’s Youtube Interview of Ian Kahn
When asked about the price, Kahn remarked “It’s $45,000 and that’s because it’s a unicorn.”
The book stayed within the same family of the original binder and it came to Kahn with a note that said “Dear Mr. Khan, My family has had a book bound in human skin since our ancestors bound it in 1682. We’ve decided that it should come to market and was told we should contact you.”
If you have the capacity of spending 2.5 million Pesos, would you buy this rare book? Share your thoughts below.
“May anak sila ni Maine!”, said one netizen and supporter of AlDub in a post.
All of a sudden, the Philippines returned to 2015 as the AlDub Nation rose again to defend the relationship of Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza in the middle of the controversy involving Kathryn Bernardo.
A week ago, Kathryn Bernardo celebrated her 28th birthday with her close friends and other celebrities, including Alden Richards. After the celebration, a video circulated on social media showing Alden serenading Kathryn and giving her a bouquet of roses. The two were also spotted cuddling with one another as they took photos at a bar!
The videos caused excited squeals from Kathryn supporters as they showed that the former girlfriend of Daniel Padilla has already started to heal and recover from the breakup. However, Alden’s fans showed the opposite as they raged against the pairing.
Screengrab from Twitter
Extremely loyal fans of AlDub or the love team of Alden and Yaya Dub (Maine) were angry that Kathryn entered the equation. One fan even mentioned that Kathryn should stay away since Alden and Maine were already married and had children. On Twitter, fans campaign against Eat Bulaga and the GMA Management, giving solo projects to Alden and Maine under a “NO TO SOLO PROJECTS” campaign.
Photo from Cosmopolitan
Although neither party has confirmed anything about the #KathDen and AlDub controversies, there are speculations that maybe Alden is courting Kath since they seemed to have great chemistry on and off screen during their “Hello Love, Goodbye” movie.
So, what do you think is happening? Should we officially bid goodbye to #KathNiel and say hello to #KathDen? Or is this just a marketing ploy for an upcoming movie starring the two?

Now that the copyrights of well-known characters are expiring, comes the creative interpretations of filmmakers. So, get your popcorn ready as we dive into the world of crazy and scary horror flicks you should watch this summer:
Mickey Mouse – Steamboat Willie
A dark sinister take on the King of Disney is arriving as the 1928 Steamboat Willie short film reached its copyright end.
In a new horror comedy thriller titled “Mickey’s Mouse Trap”, the once adorable mouse becomes a masked killer in a Mickey costume. The producer, Simon Phillips, stated, “If you put Mickey into a family movie, you don’t cover new ground.”.
Turns out Mickey will not be Stewart Little’s friend after all.
Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey
Pooh loves honey, but in this film, he also seems to be fond of blood. And just like in the story originally written by A. A. Milne and E. H. Shepard, Pooh is with his best friend Piglet, but this time, they are the murderous duo who go after university students and Christopher Robin.
With over 5 million USD in gross sales, the film became a huge success especially since their budget was merely 50k USD.
Bambi: The Redemption
The trailer just dropped this April 3, 2024. Bambi: The Redemption follows the crowd-favorite Bambi, the deer, who’s on his way to kill people. But, not just regular people, it’s the hunters who killed his mother.
There are still other upcoming horror flicks inspired by children’s book stories such as Peter Pan and Pinocchio. One thing’s for sure: these movies are serving us the alternate universes of innocence and the world of Disney. So, don’t miss out and stay tuned for more trailers and updates!
