FB Pokes & Varsity Jackets: We’re Officially Back in the Early 2000’s!

“3owh powzzz,” said the resurrected Jejemon from the early 2000s as he don his signature pink and black varsity jacket and poked his friends on Facebook once again!

Varsity Jackets Takes Centerstage for Men’s Fashion

Today’s fashion trends are inspired by the trendy pieces of Y2K, which meant that it didn’t take long for letterman or varsity jackets to make a comeback in the fashion scene. And the best part? The Night Market in Colon offers affordable pieces and tons of options. But, as opposed to the early 2000s jacket styles, the current one has more subtle color combinations: beige and white, olive and white, plain black, light blue and white, instead of the neon pink and black or the shiny blue and black combo. So, now you can style your #OOTDs with the varsity jacket without breaking your ensemble and still look cool.

Facebook Poke Is Back!

On March 19, 2024, at 8:31 AM PDT, Facebook’s “Poke” feature returned, and Gen Z is all for it! Facebook even posted on Threads saying, “THE POKE IS HAVING A MOMENT.”

Photo from Nerds Chalk

Since its humble beginnings in 2004, Facebook Poke has been used to be flirty, friendly, or annoying a friend. Aside from that, Facebook also improved its poking suggestions, which resulted in more users utilizing the feature. Facebook disclosed that there’s an increase of 13x in users poking on the app, and for what reasons, nobody knows!

So, with the Facebook Poke and varsity jackets returning, are we a sleep away from seeing swoop bangs and Domo bags again? Or are we going back further to when chunky highlights were one of the fashion trends? We’ll see!

Justice For Killua: A Fight Against Animal Cruelty

Today, heartbreak filled social media as the devastating news reached 30.9K posts for #JusticeForKillua and 12K posts under “Anthony Solares” on the platform X (formerly Twitter) about another furbaby’s life being taken by an unforgiving person. The dog’s name was “Killua,” and he was beaten to death and placed inside a sack by the assailant named Anthony Solares.

The latest update of Killua’s fur parent, Vina Rachelle, on Facebook at 4:27 PM today, March 19, 2024, was about being able to reach the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). The CCTV recording posted by the Vina showed Killua running away and being struck by a dagger by the perpetrator, Solares. According to the owner, Killua accidentally got out from their locked residential gate, which may have caused the anxiety and fear of the dog since he’s not used to being outside the busy streets without supervision.

In the video taken by Vina, when they confronted Solares, it was seen that Killua was already in a sack, and Solares took him out of it to show Vina her dead dog. Solares stated an apology to the grieving family of Killua; however, he also said that he acted only because the dog might have attacked his child.

Killua, a golden retriever, was about to have his birthday celebrated by his fur parents, but because of the incident, he will no longer be able to. Netizens expressed their condolences to the bereaved family. They cried justice for Killua, urging the government and private organizations to act and put Solares behind bars as soon as possible.

May you rest in peace in rainbow heaven, Killua.

OUR REVIEW

When we arrived, we were immediately greeted by the Lazy Coconuts staff and welcomed to our rooms. We cooked, watched Netflix and chilled, and enjoyed the comfy, soft bed.

The Wi-Fi signal at Lazy Coconuts was a lifesaver, too! After having a bit of trouble trying to get reception at the Santa Fe Port, we were glad to find strong and reliable Wi-Fi once we reached the property. No more worries about staying connected – we were good to go!

And let’s talk about its spaciousness – there’s a space for everything! Craving some grilled seafood? They’ve got you covered with their accessible grilling area. Need to air out your clothes after a day of fun or doing your laundry? No problem – there’s plenty of room outside for your clothes too!

But the real magic happens at night as the temperature drops. The ambiance becomes incredibly serene and chilly, making it the perfect setting to kick back, relax, and let go of all our worries.

So, what are you waiting for? Rent a unit at the Lazy Coconuts Lofts & Studios now!

Artsy Date Ideas in Cebu

Sanaol planning a date with an artist! So, to get into your creativeness, here’s a list of things to do in Cebu for you and your partner.

Cebu is where culture and creativity meet, making its art scene thrive and grow year by year. From notable paintings to engaging exhibits, we’ve got it all! So, if you want to get creative with your partner this summer, this one’s for you!

1. Paint By The Park

In Cebu, every corner is bursting with inspiration for your next masterpiece! Whether you’re strolling through Plaza Independencia, soaking in the vibrant energy of Cebu IT Park, or basking in the historic charm of Fuente Osmena Circle, there’s no shortage of scenic spots.

Photo from Imogen Isla

You can even go beyond the city limits and discover the natural beauty of rotundas near churches in the town centers of Cebu province. Even malls like SM Seaside City Cebu offer open spaces like the Skypark, where the city skyline can become your canvas. Or you can simply do a caricature of your partner for a more memorable keepsake of your romantic date.

WHAT TO BRING

  • Choice of canvas — For your painting session, choose between using a drawing book, a cloth canvas, or a simple paper.
  • Type of paint or art medium —There are tons of different art mediums out there, but the best options for a date would be watercolor, acrylic, or poster paints. These are easy to stash, and their vibrant colors will surely get you and your date’s creative juices flowing.
  • Brushes and pencils — You don’t have to use fancy brushes; the simplest ones will do. And of course, don’t forget to bring pencils for sketching before the actual painting activity.
  • Water and wiping cloths — Painting mediums can’t be activated without water, so bring a tumbler and a cup. It can get messy, so you might as well bring extra wiping cloths or wet tissues for the cleanup.

2. Visit An Art Museum & Gallery

If you prefer contemporary pieces, visit the Qube Gallery or Florentino’s Art Space. Traditional art and masterpieces initially kept in the US by fellow Filipinos can be found in the National Museum Of The Philippines. But wait, there’s more! Dive into nature-inspired art at the Jumalon Butterfly Sanctuary, where pinned butterfly specimens take flight in stunning displays.

3. Watch A Play

Why settle for a regular movie date when you can jazz it up with a live theater performance? With Broadway hits making their way to Cebu and homegrown productions by our talented Sugboanos, there’s always something exciting to watch. You can visit the local theaters in Cebu and inquire about upcoming plays and musicals to set a schedule for your date night. And the best part? You’d get to dress to impress, too!

4. Have A Photo Shesh

With the rise of the #selfie culture and social media, self-portrait studios are becoming all the rage! Step into the world of “Cheeez”, a Korean-inspired photo booth located in Elizabeth Mall (E-Mall). Or strike a pose at U-Click Self-Portrait Studio, with branches spread across Kasambagan Cebu, Talisay, Lapu-Lapu, and Liloan where you can capture Insta-worthy memories.

TIPS TO PREPARE FOR A PHOTO SESH

  • Pick a theme — Before you head to the selfie studio, agree on a color scheme or theme with your date for your #OOTDs. Keep it chic with coffee-inspired hues for a minimalist vibe, or go all out with bold and bright colors for a fun and creative twist!
  • Use props — Get silly with the props at the photo studio! Don’t hold back and just try on that oversized pirate hat or rock those heart-shaped glasses. And if you’re feeling extra adventurous, rent costumes and transform into a princess and prince duo, or wear animal ears for some cutesy snapshots!
  • Loosen up — Most self-portrait studios have individual curtained rooms, so no one will stare at you while you pose. So, let go of your insecurities and let the model in you take over.

There are still many artistic things you can do, like taking a pottery class together or going to the latest concert in Cebu City. Whatever you choose, the important thing is that you get to enjoy it with your date and that the day will be memorable for both of you.

Hotel In Cebu City Takes A Step: Implements “No Service Charge” Policy

Have you heard of the changes in the Service Charge Law mandated by DOLE?

Photo from People Management

On February 1, 2024, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) revised implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of Republic Act (RA) 11360 which now requires establishments to distribute service charges collected among all employees equally. This change sparked a spirited debate among hospitality and restaurant industry employees, as this policy shift directly impacts them. While some backed the change, others advocated higher wages, mainly because some establishments include service charges as part of their employees’ take-home pay. A few businesses opted to forego the service charge collection altogether to promote equality in the workplace, with Bai Hotel being one notable example.

Photo from bai Hotel Cebu Official Facebook Page

Today, March 15, 2024, Bai Hotel Cebu announced on social media its decision to implement a “No Service Charge Policy” for all its products and services starting March 19, 2024. The hotel’s management stated that this decision reflects its dedication and integrity to providing quality performance and services without depending on additional fees.

Netizens’ reactions to Bai’s latest advisory were divided. Some expressed their concerns about the employees’ well-being. One commented that the establishment should raise the pay for staff welfare, and another voiced that the decision may increase employee turnover, while others applauded Bai for taking the step.

What’s your take on Bai Hotel Cebu’s decision? Did they make the right move, or did the management place themselves in a tough spot?
