Filipino Restaurants in The New York Times’ Restaurant List of 2021

There is nothing like a lutong pinoy.

For all of us Filipinos, it is the taste of home but for foreigners, it is a celebration of taste. It is probably the worst kept secret that Filipino food is that foodgasm experience waiting to happen. We have good food here as we are rich in spices and natural ingredients.

Which is why it comes as no surprise that our cuisine was recognized on a global scale with two Filipino restaurants landing on The New York Times‘ 2021 Restaurant List.

These 2 prides of the Filipino restaurants are aptly named Archipelago, located in Seattle, and Kasama which is in Chicago. Just by their names alone, a true Filipino would instantly know that they are serving our home food.

Archipelago in Seattle

Archipelago in Seattle, a Filipino fine-dining restaurant, is known for their modern take on our Filipino dishes. Its name means a cluster or collection of islands which is a description of the Philippines itself. The food being served here is by Filipino-American chef Aaron Verzosa, and Filipino-American artist and designer-restaurateur Amber Manuguid.

Photo from archipelago_restaurant Instagram Account

Their dishes are so uniquely and artfully plated and presented that you would just stare in awe and even fear to destroy those art pieces in your table. A lugaw isn’t just an ordinary lugaw as a loaded bowl rice porridge is topped with Alaskan spot prawns and weathervane scallops. They also have savory plates of crispy pork belly with rice tinged with black truffle and a random mix of dinuguan.

Don’t worry though as they still offer our all-time fave  pandesal and other original Filipino food just in case you don’t want to mix it up that much.

Kasama in Chicago

Kasama, which means companion, is owned by real-life partners Genie Kwon and Timothy Flores. Serving eye-opening dishes with Filipino flavors and elements, they have surely earned that spot on the NY Times list.

Photo from chicagomag.com

Another challenger for mixing and matching it up but a little more experimental. They have a sandwich with grilled longganisa, pickled green papaya, and giardiniera mustard which is a bizarre and yet tasteful combination.

They also serve a small plate of pork belly with crisp, bubbly skin, paired with a piquant radish-jicama salad which I assume translates to an atsara for us in the Philippines to cut against the pork’s richness.

I know they look familiar and yet not the same with the usual Filipino dishes but as I have heard from our fellow Filipinos living in the US, our dishes are not beautiful enough for the foreign taste sometimes so they have to make it more presentable and of course adjust to the taste of the locals there as well.

Said to be selected by “critics, reporters and editors” around the country, The New York Times‘ 2021 Restaurant List consists of 50 dining establishments in America.

As both Filipino restaurants offers unique taste and experience to every diner, they deserved to be one of the “most excited about” restaurants.

Cebu now under ‘more relaxed’ Level 2; cinemas may re-open

0

Nothing beats watching movies in the big screen. The atmosphere, the surround sound and just the overall feels just hit different.

And with the announcement made by Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque that the entire island of Cebu will be placed under Alert Level 2 starting October 20 until October 31, 2021, we may have a chance to finally enjoy the cinemas for the first time since the lockdown and quarantines have begun.

This announcement is just in time to give us hope on watching the most anticipated marvel movie, the eternals as well as to give us plenty of time to get our vaccine shots.

Yes, the opportunity to soon enjoy cinemas, museums and galleries is for the fully vaccinated individuals only so we’ll all be safe while enjoying the movie.

These alert levels system though are new community quarantine classifications that aims to manage and minimize the risk of the disease through system indicators, triggers and thresholds determined by the IATF.

We are starting to loosen the restrictions in our country so this is hoping that everyone will do their part by being vaccinated as well.

Note: In IATF’s Alert Level system, Alert Level 2 permits maximum of 50% indoor venue capacity for fully vaccinated individuals only. Those below 18 years of age, even if unvaccinated, may enjoy 70% outdoor venue capacity.

Why it’s okay to click that Unfriend/Unfollow Button

Admit it, there are a lot of things and a lot of situations you personally don’t want to see on social media.

It is different with every person, depending on what you can tolerate and what you want to consume on your social media platforms.

The answer to your dilemma? That “unfollow” button.

Photo from reachupward.blogspot.com

Unfollow does not equal to Bad person

Yes, find that button and click it and never return. Gone are the days that you need to tolerate things that you really don’t want to.

Unfollowing someone does not mean that you are a bad person or that you are a toxic person. It just means that you value your peace mentally and emotionally.

With everyone being cooped up in their homes and socializing just online, you see a lot and read a lot. You scroll and scroll and then be slapped with these beliefs and opinions that are very different from yours or information especially from shady sources that you really don’t want to know or just pictures that disturbs you or annoys you constantly.

You don’t agree with them, unfollow.

You don’t like them, unfollow.

You don’t want to see them, unfollow.

Photo from howtogeek.com
Photo from howtogeek.com

Social Media isn’t everything

Social media or any communication not done in person have a lot of loop holes and things can be easily misinterpreted. Communications are not even fully understood in person, how much more online.

It is better to avoid them for your peace of mind and theirs. Friendships and relationships are much more important to just be destroyed.

It also brings peace to the energies of the world. If you see them then you brew this negative energy and start disliking them and sometimes even hating on them just because of what they share on social media.

And then you just carry that negative energy into the world and your personal life. It’s like a very unhealthy way of living or existing where you will never win.

Baybay Beach Resort: Panoramic seaview and cozy cottages in Dumanjug

Cebu has dozens upon dozens of beaches, and it seems that the number of resorts and beach accommodations keep rising as more spots are discovered and event more coastal areas are developed.

One resort adding to the roster of budding beach destinations is Baybay Beach Resort! Baybay Beach is located in the southwestern edge of Cebu, Dumanjug. It lies right along the coast with direct access to the sea.

Just opened last June of this year, the resort is making waves on social media thanks to the constant improvements and additions to the resort. Even if the property is quite new, plenty of guests have already graced the beach resort.

Honestly, Baybay Beach Resort deserves the attention. Right when you come into the premises, you’ll be greeted by a wide backdrop of the calm blue sea. Their cottages rest over open spaces that really bring a relaxing atmosphere to the resort.

These cottages are not only cozy, but also kept clean as the management makes sure to disinfect each of them every single day. That way, you can stay worry-free and just enjoy the sea.

Now, it must be known that all beaches are not created equal. The south is quite known for its white sand beaches with powdery sand and clear waters. You’ll find the same clear waters here, but the coastline has more of a wild, sea-like feel to it.

Instead of the creamy white fine sand, the coast is a characteristic mix of corals, rocks, and pebbles. It definitely has its own charm of being untamed and rugged. Along with that, mature mangroves clump together, creating a unique seascape that’s just as beautiful as any beach.

At the time of writing, Baybay Beach Resort is still on soft opening. This doesn’t stop the management from staying competitive and consistently improving their amenities. Every once in a while, the resort completes an installment to improve their service.

If you’ve already been to Baybay Beach Resort, be sure to come back for their next installation!
