Netflix special ‘Happy Jail’ features Cebu Dancing Inmates & Origins

0

Few years back, Cebu became the most talked about topic because of a certain video circulating around social media. The reason? Cebu Provincial and Rehabilitation Center or CPDRC’s Dancing Inmates.

The dancing inmates was so popular and unique that it now has its own Netflix special titled “Happy Jail”. A documentary by Filipino American filmmaker Michele Josue where it explores life inside and what goes beyond the song and dance.  It digs deeper into the lives of those jailed in the maximum-security prison and an in-depth look at the criminal justice system.

“Happy Jail” is a limited series with 5 episodes:

  1. A Happy Jail for Happy Inmates
  2. Everybody Needs a Second Chance
  3. I Dream
  4. A Free Man
  5. No Dance Killing, Man

The dancing inmates’ popularity have also reached Michael Jackson’s long-time choreographer, Travis Payne, who flew to the Philippines and witnessed them dancing to MJ’s songs. He even taught them dance moves to the song, “This Is It”.

Dancing Inmates Origins

Back when Gwen Garcia was the city Governor, she appointed his brother, Byron Garcia as the head prison director. The latter then started a program wherein inmates are to perform exercise routines that later turned into flash mobs.

Garcia started recording the dances and uploaded it on Youtube. The first video only garnered less than a thousand views and not until 2007 when they unexpectedly hit million views and started to gain worldwide recognition because of the “Thriller”, by Michael Jackson, dance.

Healthy and Fit Inmates

Garcia’s main reason why he started this daily exercise program is to help the inmates become healthy and fit despite being in the rehabilitation center. For him, the center should find ways on how to restore or rehabilitate the prisoners instead of constantly looking for ways to punish them. Hence, the exercise program.

Head prison director Garcia just wanted to document the dances and did not expect for the videos to get a lot of attention and garnered recognition globally. Because of this, Garcia hoped to promote “music and dance therapy” to every jail and rehabilitation center, not just in the Philippines but in the whole world.

However, the dancing program stopped when Hilario Davide III became city governor in 2013. But, now that Gwen Garcia was re-elected, people are hoping for the program to continue.

Are you tired of that lingering cigarette smell on your breath and fingers and how it can stick to your clothes? And not to mention your loved ones complaining about you smelling like an ashtray. If you’ve had enough of the smelly smoking experience and ready for a new super smooth journey, then it’s time you were introduced to a better alternative to cigarettes.

Introducing RELX’s newest colorways: RELX Infinity Deep Blue and RELX Essential Blue Glow.

Designed with SuperSmooth, the new RELX can provide you with a better alternative to traditional cigarette smoking and vaping, unlike other vapes, which tend to leak or have poor battery life. With the RELX Infinity and RELX Essentials, there won’t be any cigarette smells, no messy ash, and no harsh hits, just full-flavored, velvety smooth vape from start to finish.

The devices use the same groundbreaking vaping technology, the Active-Steam Pro and Air Boost design, to provide consistent vapor volume and quality by actively balancing and controlling both atomizing power and temperature. As well as providing sufficient pressure to enable the vapor to travel upwards the maze leak-resistant design from the atomizer.

Both RELX Infinity Deep Blue and RELX Essential Blue Glow have a leak-resistant maze, ergonomic mouthpiece design, and symmetrical pods. But what sets each unit apart?

As the Red Dot winner of 2020, RELX Infinity is perfect for those who like great design. With dual charging options
available, the unit can be charged using its built-in Pogo pin or USB-C charging port. The device also has a SmartPace Vibrate Alert to prevent nicotine over-consumption by vibrating when the user takes over 15 puffs within 15 minutes.

As for the RELX Essential, it’s the brand’s entry-point device that provides all you need in a vape pen at an affordable price. If you’re fine without the added features of extra battery life or a SmartPace Alert system, the Essential is the perfect option. Its high-quality design, small and manageable size, and fast charging make it the perfect entry point for smokers looking to switch to super smooth.

Last September 11, RELX hosted a virtual VIP Night exclusively for Cebu partners. A lot of prizes and surprises were given away as everyone took their first step to their #NoSmoke journey.

The Serene Sinungkulan Falls in Pinamungajan

0

If you’re staying in Cebu, there’s a high chance you’ve heard of one or two waterfalls by now. We’d be more surprised if you haven’t, because amazingly, there are more than 100 waterfalls in Cebu province!

And every year it seems like dozens more are surfacing and getting discovered. Let’s add another to the growing list, shall we?

Enter Sinungkulan Falls of Pinamungajan! You might know of its neighbors like the tucked-away Udlom Falls and the semi-concealed Busagak Falls, but Sinungkulan Falls deserves its very own highlight.

In the sleepy mountain barangay of Lamac is the peaceful waterfall. Its setting is serene and invites quiet introspection, which are characteristics unique to smaller waterfalls.

Nothing is quite as relaxing as lounging by a natural wonder while soaking in the cool forest air and listening to birdsong. Sinungkulan falls also happens to be an ideal spot for birdwatchers looking to observe some of the indigenous bird species of Cebu.

Located just under 2 hours from Cebu City, Sinungkulan is a gift to those seeking a quick break and some peace of mind. The crashing – but not quite roaring – water makes a soothing white noise that will capture you into a relaxing trance.

If you’re looking for an extended vacation, the Sinungkulan falls is also close to Kamangon Cave and the Hidden Valley Wave Pool and Mountain Resort, other wonders definitely worth visiting in Pinamungajan.

Artist in Japan earns roughly P5.6 Million from Cardboard Sculptures

0

For someone who is into DIYs, you probably know how versatile a cardboard could be. If you have a lot of it in your storage, might as well make use of it and earn from it.

Apart from being a storage for your things, cardboards are also of great alternative to plastics. Which is a perfect way to protect our common home.

However, much more than the aforementioned, cardboard could also be used in sculptures.

This has been proven by the 29-year old Japanese artist Monami Ohno who have turned a plain cardboard to something beautiful.

To what started as her homework 10 years ago, Ohno has turned her college assignment to a full-time gig. She has her works displayed in galleries across Japan. Not to mention, art galleries abroad.

Her artworks scream pop-culture which would allow those who will look closely to be more amazed with its details.

“When I first tried folding the paper, gluing, and putting them together, the people around me praised me, saying things like ‘Wow, you can make this’,” Ohno said. “That made me so happy that I have continued doing this until now.”

Her process is not unusual. Just like the others, she starts with sketching, cutting, and molding it using water and glue.

“I make the things I would really like to decorate my house with,” she said.

To what were only meant to decorate her humble abode, these turned out to be commissioned works. Every piece sells anywhere between US$909 (¥100,000) and US$13,640 (¥1.5 million), depending on size and design complexity.

Much more than its beauty, a message for the environment is also lying in every artwork.

“Eventually if it makes that point, it would be nice if people can see my work, which is made out of cardboard and recycled materials rather than plastics, and realize that there are these kinds of people who are involved in recycling.”

Soon to rise: 128-hectare Canjulao Development in Lapu-Lapu City

Lapu-Lapu City is no doubt a large economic hub in Cebu province. The city, part of Mactan Island, is a fast-growing city with plenty of economic opportunities. Not only is it home to world-class resorts and beaches, it’s also a hotspot for export processing, manufacturing, and plenty of residential spaces.

As of the 2020 census, it has a population of nearly 500,000 people. Additionally, Lapu-Lapu City is closely packed with a population density of 8,600 persons per square-kilometer. Neighboring Cebu City has only 3,061/km2.

With all this said, Lapu-Lapu City is a city that is always growing and developing. One of the biggest developments to date is the 128-hectare Lapu-Lapu City Socialized Housing and Urban Development Project in Barangay Canjulao.

This ₱3.7 billion project is aimed to create a “city” within the city. It is envisioned to be a socialized housing project integrated with industrial and commercial sections. This project is a joint venture of the city government and Premium Megastructures Inc. (PMI).

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard Chan and PMI president Francis Lloyd Chua signed the agreement at the Liberty Shrine in Brgy. Mactan last June 2021. It was declared that the impressive development of 128 hectares of land in Barangay Canjulao will be at no cost to the city.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place shortly after the signing of the agreement.

Mayor Chan explained that 25 out of the 128 hectares of land will be allocated for the socialized housing, while the rest of the area will be used for industrial and commercial ventures. All in all, the project will further boost economy and will benefit 3,000 residents.

This project is a realization of a City Council resolution passed in May 2021, which authorized Mayor Chan to enter into an agreement with PMI.

This City Council resolution states that on March 26, 2003, former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo issued Proclamation No. 346. Within the proclamation, she reserved a 25.24-hectare parcel of land in Canjulao for urban development and socialized housing site purposes.

Now, this project is envisioned to become a ‘little Singapore’, and is estimated to be completed in the next two years.
