This ancestral house from the 30s survived the devastating super typhoon Odette that badly hit the southern and metro parts of Cebu last December 16, 2021.
These photos were taken a few days after Typhoon Odette struck, shared by local resident Atty. Ben Cabrido Jr.
In his Facebook post, he said: “This ancestral house in Candaguit, Sibonga, Cebu which was built in the 1930s by the late spouses Samuel Amores (brother of my maternal grandfather Narciso Amores) and Leonisa Tenebro (niece of my maternal grandmother Leona Tenebro) has withstood against all the severest storms that hit Southern Cebu, including super typhoon Odette.”
In another post, Atty. Ben also shared his personal experience with the house: “I remember now there was a very strong storm that struck Southern Cebu in 1973. Despite its strong winds, this house just vibrated a bit as I continued with my sleep.
The name of that severe tropical storm was Vera (local name: Openg) which hit Sibonga midnight on November 20, 1973. It wasn’t as strong as Nitang (1984), Ruping (1990), and Odette (2021) but it nonetheless felled some coconut and juvenile trees and blew some other houses’ roofs.
There were no electrical posts that felled though because there was yet no electricity then. Built in May 1939, this house still stood mightily despite all the storms that came by to test its integrity.”
Our childhood dream of living in a treehouse will always be that special dream we won’t ever outgrow. Now imagine that dream treehouse but bigger, grander, and more magical.
Located in Brgy. Hingatmonan, Balamban Cebu, the Treehouse De Valentine is the perfect nest away from the stress and fast life in the city. And we’re happy we came across it while browsing for staycation places on Airbnb.
Embraced by Nature
Ever seen the magical forest that was home to the elves in the “Lord of the Rings” movie? That is what it looked and felt like. It’s like stepping into our own magical dream of a home embraced and in one with nature.
Everything that surrounds you radiates warmth like the green in trees, the temperature that feels like hugs, and the humidity in the air.
We felt so at ease and relaxed as we listen to the sound of flowing water.
Cuddled by Luxury
The calmness of the environment isn’t in contrast with the treehouse as it doesn’t seem to be separate from it. It feels like hanging out and dining right in the heart of nature.
The place was very big and spacious. So, for those who need just to take a deep breath and let all the stress go. This is it.
We bathe in our own wooden bathtub just inches away from trees and read by the balcony overlooking the river.
They also have the most comfortable king-sized beds in this 3-bedroom abode which was the perfect end to a lot of exploring and reflecting during the day.
Wifi and mobile signal were low and intermittent at times, but we expected this given its secluded location and it did not ruin our experience. It’s best to come with pre-download movies and music before arriving.
Overall, Treehouse de Valentine is a very cozy, eco-friendly, and Instagramable stay. We’re lucky Airbnb makes it convenient for us to experience this magical, rejuvenating place in Cebu. It’s indeed the best blace to rest and immerse in nature.

On Tuesday, Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) welcomed the arrival of Turkish Airlines’ first reciprocal flight to Cebu.
As part of its global expansion plans, Turkish Airlines introduced its thrice-weekly Istanbul-Manila-Cebu flights, connecting Cebu to more than 320 destinations in over 120 countries around the world.
“It has been a long time since we welcomed a new long-haul flight to Cebu because of the pandemic, and now we are starting the year with Turkish Airlines, which is MCIA’s first direct connection to Europe and strengthens our Middle Eastern connection even more. With this flight, we can help open more opportunities for the region, and enable it to accelerate recovery plans from Typhoon Odette and COVID-19,”
– GMR Megawide President Louie Ferrer
“This has been long in the making and we wish to extend our thanks to Turkish Airlines for believing in the Cebu connection, MCIAA, and our Commercial team at the airport for making this happen,” he continued
Turkish Airlines utilizes an Airbus A350-900 for the thrice-weekly service.
“Despite the recent turn of events in Cebu, the launch of Turkish Airlines brings us hope as we look forward to the future and fast track our recovery efforts. We know that the addition of the Istanbul route will open opportunities not just for Cebu, but for the entire country as well,”

Its maiden flight at MCIA at 6:52 AM on January 4, 2022.
You are not a Cebuano or might as well be a Filipino if you’ve never seen a Bo’s Coffee shop somewhere in your life. Yes. That is how popular this coffeehouse chain is and the brain behind all this is a fellow Cebuano, Mr. Steve “Bo” Benitez.
Bo’s Coffee is the Philippines’ first and largest homegrown specialty coffee chain with a total of 91 outlets nationwide and the fact that it originated in Cebu just makes us so proud.

Supporting local
Bo’s Coffee sources coffee beans locally from farmers in Sagada Mountain Province, Benguet, Mt. Kitanglad in Bukidnon, Mt. Matutum in Tupi, South Cotabato, and Mt. Apo.
These beans are handpicked and roasted by artisan roasters and transported fresh to branches around the country.

Steve believes in hiring the right and best people in their field of expertise in order to succeed in business.

This year started to be very challenging among many Cebuanos due to the devastating wrath of Typhoon Odette last December 16 and now the rising cases of Omicron variant.
Despite these life challenges, our faith just grows stronger. That’s why there’s still no stopping Cebu from honoring its patron, Señor Sto. Niño or the Holy Child Jesus. Most events for this year will still be done virtually while the devotees are also encouraged to attend the Sinulog novena masses online.
More than the festive celebration in Cebu — from the most colorful parades to the grandest programs and competitions here and there, at the end of the day, Sinulog is a solemn and religious event celebrating the adoration of the city’s patron, Señor Sto. Niño or the Holy Child Jesus.

Why do we celebrate Sinulog?
The Sinulog Festival is a celebration in honor of Santo Niño (Child Jesus). The festival is done by a dance ritual, in which it tells the story of the Filipino people The word “Sinulog” means a graceful dance– a rhythmic and beautiful forward and backward motion that represents the “sulog” (or current).
The Sinulog Festival has been going around for almost four centuries now. Its rich history dates back to old and truly reflects the humble beginnings of Cebu and the birth and growth of Christianity in Cebu and the Philippines.

Most unique twins yet — born just 15 minutes apart, but they have a different day, month, and year of birth.
While everyone else was out celebrating New Year’s Eve, Fatima Madrigal from California was giving birth to fraternal twins Aylin and Alfredo Trujillo. They were born only 15 minutes apart, but their birth was unusual since they were born on separate days, months, and years.

Alfredo Antonio Trujillo was the first to give birth on December 31, 2021, at 11:45 p.m. Aylin Yolanda Trujillo, his twin sister, was born at 12 a.m. on Saturday, January 1, 2022, making her the first infant born at Natividad Medical Center in Greenfield, California.
Aylin Trujillo weighed 5 pounds, 14 ounces and her twin brother weighed in at 6 pounds, 1 ounce.
“It’s crazy to me that they are twins and have different birthdays,” their mother, Fatima Madrigal, said, according to the hospital. “I was surprised and happy that she arrived at midnight.”

The twins brought a lot of happiness and excitement to the hospital. According to the hospital, Dr. Ana Abril Arias, a family doctor at the Natividad Medical Group, said it was “certainly one of the most remarkable deliveries of my career.”
Two girls and a boy are the infants’ elder siblings. According to the hospital, Madrigal’s oldest son is ecstatic to have a brother, and the rest of their family is similarly ecstatic to meet the twins.
