Cebu City to release P5,000 cash aid, P3/L subsidy to PUV Drivers next week

Starting next week, the Cebu City Government will provide P5,000 in financial assistance and a P3/L fuel subsidy to public utility drivers in Cebu City.

Cebu City Councilor James Cuenco stated that the P100 million stimulus program for drivers will be taken from the city’s 2022 annual budget. P70 million would be set aside for the P5,000 monetary assistance for drivers, while the remaining P30 million would be allocated for their daily requirements, such as food and other necessities.

At least 5,000 public utility jeepneys (PUJ) and taxi drivers are prioritized to receive their share next week. During the second round of distribution, or until the funds are depleted, tricycle and habal-habal drivers will also receive help.

Drivers are also entitled to a fuel discount of P3 per liter. They just have to present their fuel cards issued by the Cebu City Government to avail.

Labor group seeks P430-increase in daily minimum wage in Central Visayas

On Monday, the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) petitioned the Regional Wages and Productivity Board-Central Visayas (RTWPB-7) for a PHP430 raise in the daily minimum wage in the region’s four provinces — Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor, and Negros Oriental.

The group requested that RTWPB-7 grant the rise for all private-sector workers in an eight-page petition, saying that its last petition was filed in 2019. The award, which took effect on January 5, 2020, only increased the minimum wage by PHP18.

“The modest PHP18 rise has long been evaporated by the exorbitant expenses of basic commodities and services, even before it could be felt by minimum wage laborers,”

Raymond Democrito Mendoza, TUCP president and TUCP Party-list representative

According to government data, the current minimum salary of PHP404 has a buying power of only PHP371.32.

The labor group’s chief blamed the current inflation as a result of increases in fuel prices brought on by the Ukraine-Russia situation, which has had a knock-on effect on the wage-dependent labor sector.

‘Game of Thrones: The Rise of the Dragon’ announced

Game of Thrones fans have something to be excited for as author George R. R. Martin is working on a new book centered on the controversial House Targaryen.

This came ahead of HBO’s upcoming prequel/spin-off TV series ‘House of the Dragon’ that is currently in production.

The all-new book that kind of ties into the show with The Rise of The Dragon, described as “An Illustrated History of the Targaryen Dynasty,” will feature more than 180 new illustrations of the family and its reign, with an in-depth look at some of the lore of Westeros.

The author also clarified the difference in The Rise of The Dragon and the previously released Fire & Blood:

“Think of The Rise of the Dragon as a deluxe reference book, in which Westeros’ most infamous family – and their dragons – come to life in partnership with some truly incredible artists.”

“Fire & Blood was scribed as a grandmaesters’ account of events from Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros through to the infamous Dance of the Dragons, the civil war that nearly undid the Targaryen rule. The Rise of the Dragon will cover the same time period, but is written in a more encyclopedic style similar to The World of Ice and Fire. In fact, The World of Ice and Fire authors Elio M. García, Jr. and Linda Antonsson have returned to help with this tome.”

The new book ‘Game of Thrones: The Rise of the Dragon’ will be released in October while the House of the Dragon is set to premiere this year with even more Game of Thrones spin-offs potentially in the works.

Engaged couple diagnosed with cancer 8 days apart

The vows “for better or for worse” and “in sickness and in health” have come earlier for a couple in Michigan as they were diagnosed with cancer eight days apart.

Clay Slenk and Mariah Nelesen got engaged on December 26, 2020 and had a long engagement for they were planning to have the wedding this June 10, 2022.

Photo from WOOD TV8 YouTube Channel

But cancer came into the picture just as they were sending the “save-the-dates”. Nelesen was informed via phone call that she has ovarian cancer on January 11 and eight days later, her fiancé, Slenk, also received the news that what he thought was lingering side effects of pneumonia was actually Leukemia.

Each of them immediately sought treatments for their conditions. Slenk spent the next 40-plus days in the hospital receiving treatment and Nelesen began the process of freezing her eggs as well as her treatments.

This frustrating situation must anger some or drive them to the end as it’s not just one but the two of you planning for a future so different from this but they didn’t waste time on anger.

Slenk said that anger and frustration can only make the day much worse and instead, they’ve chosen to make every day count.

Photo from WOOD TV8 YouTube Channel

With the uncertain future in mind and seizing the moment each day, they have moved their wedding this April 9 to go through it together and face their cancer battle as man and wife. It may not be the wedding they have initially planned it to be it will still be a very special day for them setting aside the reception and eating burgers and brats on the grill instead.

Thankfully, they are not alone in this battle though as they are and supported by family and grounded in their faith.

“There’ll be a little more sickness before the health, but that’s alright,”

– Slenk

If you want to help this sweet couple, there is a GoFundMe created for them.

LIST: Fiber Plans available in the Philippines (2022)

For the past decade, the need for having a fast internet connection has slowly grown.

As we entered the year 2020, the demand for internet went through the roof with work-from-home arrangements becoming the norm due to the pandemic. This has opened a new idea for more flexible work arrangements for the future with internet connection being at the center of it all.

The internet has etched itself so deep into our lives that, just like water, food, and electricity, it has become one of this generation’s basic necessities.

Since every form of transaction and business is slowly migrating into the digital space, a practical move would be to subscribe to fast, reliable, and, if possible, affordable plans. From doing online and cashless payments for online shopping and online classes.

One of the most heated debates regarding internet connection is the choice between DSL and Fiber. In terms of speed, DSL only reaches up to a measly 15 mbps while Fiber can go as fast as 1,000 Mbps (1 Gbps) which is more than 100x faster. Clearly, Fiber is vastly superior over DSL but its greatest downside is its availability.

Infrastructures still need to be laid down first before connections can be made in an area and there are areas in the country that are just too far for installations.

With that, we have made a list of all available Fiber plans in the country and corresponding reasons and conditions to apply for a certain plan.

Globe is perfect for households that want seamless internet connection without having to worry about bandwidth consumption.

PLDT Fibr

PLDT Home Fibr Plans are the perfect plans for streamers, gamers, and other professions requiring heavy bandwidth usage. This is a good option for small families or any house with only a small number of gadgets requiring a connection. Also, unlike Converge, PLDT has a wide area coverage with a lot of PH cities under its web. It also has bundle plans that some consumers will surely appreciate.

CONVERGE ICT

Converge ICT is one of the most affordable plans out of all in this list, able to provide users with the fastest speed at a low price. However, it offers the least amount of inclusions and also covers the least locations – mostly available in Metro Manila and nearby provinces. Converge ICT is ideal for heavy broadband users who want cheap fiber-optic connection at home without the installation of phones.

As of January 2021, Converge ICT supports very few locations in the island of Cebu.

Confidence is an important part of beauty in and out. It can attract people like magnet and reflect on our physical appearance as well.

Unfortunately, women particularly Asian, according to a study conducted by Watsons, are not confident enough

Photo from Unsplash

Watsons conducted a survey named “Women’s Confidence Survey in Asia” with the goal of finding what kind of support women need to level up their confidence and become a better version of themselves.

The findings however showed a sad reality with almost half of all women in Asia being not confident about themselves at work and even in life.

The study conducted involved over 3,100 women aged 20-29 from six countries: Mainland China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand who rated their confidence levels

Four major findings of ‘Women’s Confidence Survey in Asia’ are:

  • Almost 50% of Asian women feel unconfident
  • Almost 50% do not feel satisfied with their career development
