Worldcoin: The New Cryptocurrency That Uses Eye Biometrics to Verify Humans

What are your thoughts on iris scanning for biometrics? Does it provide a more secure and reliable method of identifying people? or are classic methods like passwords and fingerprints still the best bet?

Photo from Unsplash

The use of physical features  to identify persons is known as biometrics. Iris scanning, which uses the distinctive patterns in the iris of the eye to identify individuals, is one of the most present biometrics.

What is Worldcoin?

Worldcoin is a revolutionary cryptocurrency that distinguishes humans from AI systems through biometric authentication. The purpose of Worldcoin is to offer everyone, regardless of country or background, with equal access to the global economy.

Photo from Unsplash

Worldcoin, the brainchild of Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPT creator OpenAI, has developed a cryptocurrency action that rewards users for scanning their eyes. The goal is to identify between “verified humans” and AI systems, allowing everyone to participate in the global economy. Participants are invited to have their eyes scanned by a silver orb and get a “genesis grant” of 25 tokens (about. £40) upon signing up via the app.

Worldcoin wants to establish universal access to the global economy “regardless of country or background”. It is also described as an opportunity to establish “a place for all of us to benefit in the age of AI”.

The Worldcoin protocol uses biometric verification to assign a digital identity in the form of a Worldcoin token, making it the world’s first crypto token to be distributed globally and freely to authentic individuals. Participants will also receive a crypto wallet on their cellphones, allowing them to conduct seamless global transactions using both digital assets and traditional currencies via the World App.

While the project claims to preserve users’ privacy, the Information Commissioner’s Office is looking into it. Nonetheless, the effort has received widespread attention, with 2 million individuals from 33 countries taking part in the experimental stages.

Amidst the excitement, numerous well-known personalities have voiced their viewpoints. Worldcoin’s objectives of “global scale alignment” were deemed “cute” by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, but Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin expressed mixed feelings and raised worries about overreliance on scanning orbs, warning against potential dystopian consequences.

The launch of Worldcoin has been met with mixed opinions. Some people have praised the project for its potential to create a more inclusive and equitable financial system. Others have raised concerns about the privacy implications of the iris scans and the potential for the project to be used for surveillance.

It is unclear whether Worldcoin will be successful. However, the project is certainly generating a lot of interest and debate. It will be interesting to see how it evolves in the coming years.

7 Nostalgic Filipino TV Shows That Will Take You Back in Time

Television shows have a particular place in our hearts, and many of us link our favorite childhood TV episodes with feelings of warmth and nostalgia. These shows not only entertained us but also taught us important life lessons entertainingly and engagingly.

Let’s take a nostalgic walk down memory lane and revisit seven iconic TV shows that have left an unforgettable impact on our hearts.

If you’re feeling nostalgic for those days, here are 7 shows that will take you back in time:

1. Spirits

Spirits is an ABS-CBN production for Philippine television. It was broadcasted from December 6, 2004, to May 6, 2005. Eight kids—Red, Lloyd, Maya, Liz, Jessie, Thor, Nato, and Gabby—find out one day that they have unique powers that set them apart from other people as a weird epidemic sweeps across their village.

2. Jollitown

In the Philippines, “Jollitown” was the pinnacle of joy and laughter for young people. The program, which featured the adored Jollibee characters, mixed animated and live-action elements to amuse and educate young viewers. “Jollitown” became a global sensation, promoting the significance of friendship, generosity, and good values through catchy songs, insightful life lessons, and humorous characters like Hetty, Yum, Twirlie, and Popo.

The GMA Network aired the educational television program Jollitown in the Philippines. With 82 episodes in all, the show had its premiere on April 13, 2008, and it ended on October 12, 2013.

3. Art Angel

Bing Loyzaga, the show’s host, encouraged children to explore their artistic potential through various crafts and projects. “Art Angel” inspired kids to unleash their artistic potential while having fun with colors and crafts, from drawing and painting to crafting homemade decorations.

4. Ang TV

In the 1990s, “Ang TV” was a breakthrough Filipino youth-oriented variety show. It included a diverse cast of exceptional kid and adolescent performers who sang, danced, and acted. Every weekend, the show’s youthful enthusiasm and funny sketches brought delight to countless households. “Ang TV” became an opportunity for future stars, starting the careers of several renowned Filipino actors and entertainers.

5. Pedro Penduko

Just a few months after leaving the PBB house, ABS-CBN signed Matt Evans to star in the network’s TV adaptation of Francisco Coching’s famous Komiks title. Evans portrayed the show’s lead character Pedro Penduko, who got drawn into the realm of the engkantos, or the ‘Dalaket’ in the show. He used a magical amulet he was given by his parents to fight magical monsters such as vampires, aswangs, and other mythical Filipino creatures. The presentation was an instant smash with Filipino homes, garnering the greatest ratings ever for a Komiks episode. The show had been rerun multiple times and aired for two years.

6. Sineskwela

Who could forget the iconic “Sineskwela”? For more than two decades, this educational science program was a fixture in Filipino classrooms. “Sineskwela” made learning science not only captivating but also understandable, thanks to its lively hosts and engaging lessons. A Blossom of Faith: Journey of the Filipino Nina Ruiz-Abad towards Sainthood

In the quaint town of Laoag, Ilocos Norte, a tale of extraordinary devotion and faith began to unfold, capturing the hearts of the faithful and the curious alike.

They had no idea that this young Filipino girl, Nina Ruiz-Abad, would soon be on her path to becoming one of history’s youngest saints.

Photo from Mariano Marcos State University Facebook Page

One’s righteousness and piety had to shine with an ethereal brilliance to achieve such a rank; it was not given to those with ordinary hearts of gold. Only St. Lorenzo Ruiz and St. Pedro Calungsod were canonized as the Philippines’ saints.

Nina Ruiz-Abad, a young girl, has a big and pure heart. She had a deep belief in God and was always eager to help others. She was young when she received the news that she had a terminal illness, yet she never lost hope. She never stopped praying and helping others and inspires everyone she knew.

Her death left a void in the hearts of those who knew her, but it also unveiled an inspiring tapestry of faith that she had weaved throughout her short existence.

Photo from Jay Marey on Facebook

Bishop Renato Mayugba, who had a close relationship with Nina, spoke about her with reverence and wonder. “That’s the girl who always wore a rosary. The girl who loved to pray. The girl who loved God so much,” he remarked, capturing the essence of her saintly heart.

The path to sainthood is less traveled and is paved with hardships and waiting periods. According to Vatican rules, five years must pass after a person’s death to begin the process, allowing emotions to subside and objectivity to prevail. In taking up the cause, the Diocese of Laoag vowed to launch an investigation into Nina’s life. When the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Causes of Saints approved the transfer of authority to the Laoag diocese, their efforts were rewarded.

The Congregation for the Causes of Saints then thoroughly scrutinized the evidence of her holiness in her life, scrutinizing every aspect of it. If approved, the Pope would designate her as “venerable,” starting off the journey of beautification.

Although the path ahead was long and uncertain, the people of Laoag remained firm in their conviction of Nina’s probable sainthood. The prospect of a little Filipino girl serving as an image of devotion and fortitude for future generations gave them inspiration and hope.

As a result, the story of Nina Ruiz-Abad, the Filipino girl on her journey to sainthood, caught the nation’s hearts. Her story of faith and dedication shone like a beacon in the night, illuminating the path for those seeking the path of righteousness through hardships in life.
