Miss Universe El Salvador Addresses Media Card Mistake

Almost a week after the Miss Universe Competition in El Salvador, Miss Universe El Salvador’s Instagram page addressed the media card mistake during the announcement of the top 5.

Photo from missuniversosv on Instagram

The mistake drew flak on social media as people were quick to point out that the first media card upload included Moraya Wilson (Australia), Karla Guilfu (Puerto Rico), Sheynnis Palacios (Nicaragua), Michelle Dee (Philippines), and Camila Avella (Colombia).

However, the post was later deleted, and a new media card was uploaded where Anntonia Porslid of Thailand replaced Michelle Dee’s name.

“Our mistake! In the rush to get our posts up during Saturday’s live broadcast, we accidentally mixed up the names of two finalists. This was a simple error of moving too fast — we heard the same results live at the same time that you all did, no special access over here! We’re sorry to both finalists,”

Miss Universe El Salvador wrote.

Moreover, Michelle Dee responds to the apology, saying, “There should be no room for error but the reality is that we live in an imperfect world. My request is not just to be respectful to the delegates but to the supporters that are so passionate about this platform as well.”

“But again, everything happens for a reason, and it’s just a matter of seeing it as a lesson or a blessing. So always act with love, kindness, and respect. All love,”

Dee continued.

The Truth About the Solar Superstorm That Causes an Apocalypse

Social media has been buzzing for the past few days because of the solar superstorm that is said to “wipe out the internet” for weeks and even months. Social media pages and accounts have shared that there will be a solar superstorm on November 24, 2023. However, it is fake news.

Photo from Unsplash

Yes, you read that right; There is no substantial evidence that can support the claims about it.

What is a Solar Superstorm?

According to reports, a solar superstorm happens when the sun emits powerful solar flares. Moreover, the excessive flares can stun our world and shut down our internet connection.

In a report by Fox Weather, the US is now crafting an early warning system that can detect solar activities. The early warning system project is led by Peter Becker, a professor at George Mason University.

Photo from Unsplash

Becker and his team are collaborating with the United States Department of Navy. Moreover, the project was granted P753.13 million in federal funds to research more on the solar activity that can lead to what they call an “internet apocalypse.” During this so-called apocalypse, electronic and satellite communications will stop working.

When did the idea of a solar superstorm start? Becker deduces that it could have been from the increase of solar flares. According to him, they can tell when the large explosion of plasma and magnetic field called CME will be heading to Earth. Because of that, there is an 18-hour to 24-hour warning period.

Photo from Unsplash

Furthermore, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the US says that the maximum of the solar cycle now will happen between January and October 2024.

A solar superstorm also happened years prior. Notably, in the 1859 Carrington Event, Becker said that a CME “totally wiped out the telegraph system.” The telegram system was down for a whole week.

Moreover, a solar storm also occurred in Quebec, Canada, in 1989, which caused a 12-hour blackout.

Photo from Unsplash

According to NASA, if a solar storm does happen, it will lead to even greater damages, such as widespread electrical disruptions, persistent blackouts, and interruptions to global communication.

As Mark Miesch of NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center stated, other effects would be interference with the electrical grid, degraded GPS signals, increased orbital drag on satellites, and radiation hazards to airline cruise and astronauts.

You Can Get Earthquake Alerts on Your Phone, Here’s How

In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, staying informed about potential earthquakes has become more critical than ever, especially in earthquake-prone regions like the Philippines. Thanks to advancements in smartphone capabilities, users can now receive timely alerts about earthquakes, providing crucial seconds that could make a life-saving difference.

Photo from Unsplash

It was just last Friday when a 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit General Santos City, South Cotabato. Aftershocks were also felt across Cebu, which further shows how countries with the same geological conditions as ours consistently experience earthquakes. This all the more raises the urgency of being proactive.

Here, we’re going to talk about how you can enable earthquake alerts both on Android and iPhone devices and introduce three earthquake apps to enhance your preparedness.

Photo from Unsplash

For Android Users

Android users have a distinct advantage when it comes to earthquake alerts. Unlike the iPhone, Android’s system doesn’t rely on SIM cards or government notices. Instead, it utilizes the internal accelerometer in every Android phone to detect vibrations, sending data to Google. Once Google determines an earthquake is occurring, it swiftly sends out alerts to every Android device in the affected area.

Here is how to activate this feature:

  • Go to Settings > Location > Earthquake Alerts.
  • Turn on both earthquake alerts and the Emergency Location Service.
  • For devices with variations in the menu, a quick search for “Earthquake alerts” in settings will lead you to the right options.

For iPhone Users

While iPhone earthquake alerts depend on government notices and may not be as prompt as Android’s system, users can still enable emergency alerts for added safety. If you want to be more equipped than being reliant on government alerts, there are also third-party earthquake apps that you can easily download which will be listed as well.

Here is how to activate government alerts on your iPhone:

  • Navigate to Settings > Notifications > Emergency Alerts.
  • Turn on Emergency Alerts.

Earthquake apps that you can download for extra precaution are as follows:

1. Earthquake

Boasting the title of the most downloaded earthquake-related app, “Earthquake” stands out for its comprehensive map displaying active earthquakes worldwide. The app pulls data from geological organizations globally, providing users with a real-time overview of seismic activity. Its critical alert system is considered the best among the recommended options.

2. QuakeFeed

For iPhone users looking for a visually appealing and user-friendly interface, “QuakeFeed” is the ideal choice. Despite the presence of ads, its clean and simple design resembles that of a built-in Apple app. The app delivers real-time earthquake information, ensuring users stay informed in a visually pleasing manner.

3. My Earthquake

“My Earthquake” offers a simplified and streamlined alternative to the more comprehensive apps. While not as detailed, it efficiently gets the job done, providing users with essential earthquake alerts without overwhelming them with unnecessary information.

In the face of seismic threats, technology has empowered individuals to take proactive measures. Whether you’re opting for the efficiency of Android’s system, or exploring third-party apps like “Earthquake,” “QuakeFeed,” or “My Earthquake,” staying ahead of the shake has never been more accessible.

Bacolod City, the vibrant capital of Negros Occidental, beckons travelers from Cebu with its rich culture and scenic landscapes. Whether you prefer a leisurely journey or a swift flight, here’s a complete guide on how to make your way from Cebu to Bacolod.

Bus and Ferry Option

You can choose between a comfortable bus or a convenient van from Cebu’s South Bus Terminal to Toledo City Bus Terminal.

You may take a bus that goes directly to Bacolod which costs ₱580, but of course, there are much cheaper options. The bus fare ranges from ₱70 to ₱90, while vans cost ₱110 to ₱120.

Buses run every 20-30 minutes with a travel time of around 2 hours; vans take approximately 1.5 hours with no actual schedule since if one van arrives, another one goes, so it may take a longer time to wait.

Flight Option

Of course, the fastest way to get somewhere is for sure through air travel. You may opt for a 50-minute flight from Cebu to Bacolod via Cebu Pacific or Philippine Airlines.

The cutting trip, involving a bus to Toledo, a pedicab to the sea port, a ferry ride, which were already discussed previously, and a final bus or V-hire to Bacolod, is a more economical choice.

Atty. Roberto P. Laurel expressed how he was hesitant to pursue the idea of an Esports Arena as it was suggested to him.

“Initially, when this idea of putting up an esports arena was brought up to me, I was hesitant, because I was thinking; ‘Ano? Gaming? Di ba pang arcade lang yan? Baka we need this for laboratory’,”

Atty. Laurel said.

A Comprehensive Guide to Traveling from Cebu to Bohol via Ferry

Bohol, a gem in the Philippines, beckons travelers with its stunning Chocolate Hills, enchanting Tarsiers, and world-class diving spots. While various travel options exist, ferries emerge as the most accessible and economical means to reach this tranquil island from Cebu.

If you’re planning a trip to this beautiful destination, get to know the essential details and tips to ensure a seamless ferry journey.

Cebu City, Philippines | Photo from Unsplash

Departure Point

Ferries from Cebu to Bohol depart from Pier 1, conveniently located a short distance from Cebu City center or Mactan-Cebu Airport. With this, pre-booking is advised to avoid long lines, potential delays, or cancellations. It is highly advised for you to use platforms like 12GO for a hassle-free experience.

You should also consider traffic delays and aim to arrive an hour early, as per ticket instructions.

Terminal Fees and Baggage

All Philippine ports require a terminal fee, not covered by ferry tickets. Make sure to prepare ₱25 (approximately $0.50 USD) at Pier 1, and also keep in mind that checked baggage incurs an additional fee of ₱50-100. It’s recommended for you to arrive with ample time for check-in, fee payments, and security checks.

Ferry Routes and Options

Since there are no direct flights, ferries are the fastest and most economical choice.

There are three main routes you can consider:

Cebu to Tagbilaran: 2 hours

This is the most chosen option due to its travel time and its docking point. Panglao Island is one of the most popular travel spots for tourists, and the tourist hub is only a half hour drive from the sea port.

There are multiple departures by Oceanjet (starting at 6 am and departing every two hours and 20 minutes afterwards) and Lite Shipping (one ferry at 10 pm). Prices range from ₱900 to ₱1,400.

Cebu City, Philippines | Photo from Unsplash

Cebu to Tubigon: 45 minutes

Being the fastest among the other options to reach Bohol, this is also a popular choice for tourists especially those who plan to tour the mainland.

There are four daily ferries by Lite Shipping (starting at 1 am and departing at 7 am, and then 1 pm and 7 pm again) and two by Fast Cat (from 7:30 am to 8 pm with the journey being an hour and a half). The price for both options start at ₱400, but you may upgrade your journey and pay additional fees.

Bohol Island, Philippines | Photo from Unsplash

Cebu to Getafe: 1 hour 15 minutes

If you plan to stay north of the mainland, then this is your best possible option. This route has three daily ferries by Oceanjet (starting at 6:30 am, and again at 10 am and 2:30 pm). The price starts at ₱750.

Online booking with platforms like 12GO is encouraged for the best rates and to secure tickets in advance. Included is a link and timetable for the Cebu to Bohol ferry on 12GO. https://12go.asia/en/ferry/cebu/bohol/

Michelle Dee’s Miss Universe 2023 Gown Pays Homage to Indigenous Tribes

In a dazzling showcase of culture and advocacy, Michelle Dee, the Philippines’ representative at the Miss Universe 2023 pageant, graced the stage with a sheer nude evening gown adorned with black jewels. However, this gown was more than just a fashion statement; it was a powerful tribute to Apo Whang-Od, the last and oldest mambabatok of the Kalinga ethnic group.

Photo from michelledee on Instagram

The gown, designed by Mark Bumgarner, symbolizes more than just aesthetic beauty; every stitch is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of indigenous tattoo art. Apo Whang-Od, a legendary Filipina, has become an icon in preserving this heritage, gaining global recognition. Through her art, she embodies timeless beauty, a theme coinciding with Miss Universe’s move to lift age restrictions, championing inclusivity, and challenging age stereotypes.

Photo from michelledee on Instagram
Photo from michelledee on Instagram

Dee’s choice to highlight Apo Whang-Od and the Kalinga ethnic group shines a spotlight on the importance of representation for minority ethnic groups in the Philippines. These communities often face marginalization, and their cultural contributions are not always recognized on a global stage. The gown becomes a canvas, bringing attention to the intricate narratives woven into the fabric of these indigenous communities, and it is very empowering to see this kind of representation in a platform as huge as Miss Universe.

Moreover, Michelle Dee’s advocacy for autism acceptance, inclusivity, and empowerment, which earned her the Gold Winner title in the pageant’s Voice for Change category, aligns with the broader theme of representation. By using her platform to amplify the voices of those often overlooked, Dee underscores the significance of embracing diversity and fostering understanding.

As we celebrate Dee’s top 10 placement in the Miss Universe 2023 pageant, it is evident that her journey extends beyond the runway. It becomes a celebration of the diverse stories embedded in the tapestry of the Philippines, with a particular emphasis on the often-neglected narratives, and with her gown in particular, she was able to pay tribute to the Kalingas. It is truly wonderful to see the celebration and acknowledgment of cultural richness and diversity of each tiny corner of our archipelago amplified in the global scene.
