Fact Check: Islander Philippines is not closing

The internet world in the Philippines went buzzing after news of an Islander Philippines factory closing down. People thought the brand itself would be closing. However, Islander Philippines shuts down the misconception.

Photo from GMA Network

In an official statement, the nostalgic slippers brand confirmed that they will not be closing down and will continue to make top-quality slippers for everyone. The brand also expressed that the closure pertained to the factory store outlet, not Islander Philippines as a whole.

Photo from Philippine Star

Back in the 90s and 2000s, people were completing their OOTDs with Islander slippers that sport thick soles and thick straps. The slippers were also very durable yet still comfortable to wear.

Islander slippers are still available online on Shopee and Lazada. Moreover, they can also be bought in-store.

Firework Safety Guide for the New Year

As the new year approaches, the anticipation of our celebration to welcome it involving loud noises and visuals through the use of pyrotechnics grows. But with that comes the danger in using these fiery spectacles.

Photo from Unsplash

To prevent and treat firework injuries, here’s what you need to know.

Safety Measures and Precautions

Always prepare what is necessary if your family is one who always participates in lighting up something for the new year. Or even if you don’t, it’s still best to be proactive when worse comes to worst.

  • Stock up on the essentials such as a first aid kit with all the necessary equipment and medicine, water, and a fire blanket. Also prepare sterile saline in the case of eye contact with sparks.
Photo from Occupational Health and Safety Blog
  • If you are hosting a home display, make sure to follow the rules and guidelines in your local area and designate a responsible adult to facilitate your firework show. You may google the Fireworks Code in your area to be guided.
Photo from Unsplash
  • And of course, to be extra precautionary especially for children, make sure to keep fireworks in a closed metal box to avoid contact.
  • If you’re going to give your children sparklers, make sure that they are supervised and instruct them to do so at a distance from others.

First Aid Tips

  • MINOR BURNS

1. Alleviate the heat of the burn through putting it under running water for at least 20 minutes.

2. Cover the affected area with cling film or a dressing after cooling it with water.

Photo from Insider
  • SEVERE BURNS

1. Call for an ambulance or immediately drive the affected individual to the hospital

2. When waiting for the ambulance, cool the burned area under running water.

Photo from World Health Organization
  • EYE INJURIES

1. Make sure to wash your hands or wear sterile gloves before you touch the affected area.

2. Apply sterile saline to the eyes.

3. Seek medical advice afterwards to have better treatment, or in the case of persistent pain or discomfort.

  • LOSS OF LIMB

1. Cover the amputated part and place in a sterile bag or container full of ice.

2. Seek immediate medical attention. Call an ambulance or immediately drive the casualty to the nearest hospital.

  • FIREWORK INGESTION
  1. Seek immediate medical attention. Firework ingestion is highly dangerous and varies from case to case.
  2. List down symptoms of the casualty if there are any while waiting for an ambulance or while on the way to the hospital.
  3. Avoid self-induced vomiting at home. While it is a common treatment to any kind of poisoning, in terms of fireworks, it may cause further harm.
  4. Bring a sample of the firework ingested if possible. This can help healthcare providers examine the toxins involved and treat you more accordingly.

The misuse of fireworks poses serious risks as these things are a double-edged sword. Make sure to be prepared for accidents, and better yet, be careful enough not to let them happen. Supervise children, follow the guidelines in using fireworks, and use them responsibly.

Firework Anxiety in Pets: Tips for a Stress-Free Celebration

We have only a few sleeps until the new year, and by virtue of tradition, fireworks will be taking center stage. The feast to the eyes and the belief of the noise driving away evil spirits make up a wonderful event for us humans, but not so for our furry friends who have no idea what is going on, it just so happens that everyone is all dressed up and there’s so much food on the table. When the fireworks start, pets experience anxiety, fear, and stress because of the deafening noise, and unfamiliar and unpleasant smell of the pyrotechnics. These can trigger various fear responses in animals.

Photo from Unsplash

Here is what to do to ensure your pets’ well-being during fireworks.

Keep Your Pets Away From Fireworks

The first most important thing to do for your pet is to make sure they are not directly exposed to the sounds right before they start going off. This means that you have to keep them inside to at least have the walls of your house as a barrier from what’s going on outside, furthermore making them feel safe since they are with the rest of the family. For big animals that have a tendency to be violent to other pets or people inside the house, you may help them through soundproofing their outdoor cages to block noise. If this option isn’t attainable, you may stay with them outside during the fireworks to make them comfortable and let them feel that you are there for them.

Create a Safe Haven

All animals seek comfort in den-like spaces as territorial beings. For cats, you may give them a secure hiding place where they can stay during the festivities, perhaps a box would do. Preparing a calming environment in a quiet area away from the doors and windows will give your pet shelter from everything going outside, and will surely make them feel secure. You may provide familiar toys and treats to calm them down and allow them to feel comfortable even in hiding. Close your windows and your doors, and use blackout curtains to block everything from outside as much as possible.

Play White Noise

Playing white noise can mask the sounds of fireworks outside. You can leave the TV on, or play calming music. There are multiple sounds available online that are proven to have soothing effects for different animals, depending which ones you have. An example of which is “Through a Dog’s Ear” which is known for having calming effects on dogs. Other Classic FM’s pet classics help pets relax during our festivities as well.

Comfort Your Pet

As the owner of your pet, you are the one they trust the most and you have the ability to make them feel as safe as possible. If you’re not going out for the holidays, make sure you stay close to your pets and comfort them. You can talk to them in a soothing tone as this can help alleviate their anxiety. You may also give them pets and strokes while the fireworks are going on.

Photo from Unsplash

Talk to Your Vet

Your pet may have firework phobia if their anxiety during fireworks is severe. In this case, you should consult your veterinarian in advance. There are options such as calming treats, anxiety vets, and possible medications to lessen distress. This is treatable, so there is nothing to worry about as long as you take precaution to guarantee your pet’s well-being.

Photo from The Animal Law Firm

Consider Hiring a Trainer

In the case where the medications and the advice of your veterinarian doesn’t work, you may consider getting the help of a behavior consultant or a professional trainer if this is to your avail. This can develop healthier mental responses within your pets and further help them. If you cannot do so, you may gradually expose your pets to the sounds of fireworks yourself through playing videos of them on your own device. This is to desensitize your pet to fireworks and lessen their anxiety. The method called counter-conditioning can be done through giving your pet treats after or during playing the sounds.

Photo from The Spruce Pets

It is important to ensure our pets’ well-being as much as it is for us to have a good time during the holidays. As pet moms and dads, it is our responsibility to keep them comfortable and make sure that they feel safe and secure to make the celebration enjoyable for everyone in the family, especially for our furry family members.

Former Filipina Actress Diana Zubiri Experienced Discrimination at a Luxury Store in Adelaide, AU.

In one of her recent vlogs, former Encantadia actress Diana Zubiri Smith explained how she and her mother-in-law walked out of a Louis Vuitton store in Adelaide, Australia, after they experienced a not-so-pleasing encounter with a staff member.

Diana suspected that it was because of the way they dressed. In the vlog, Diana explained how she and her mother-in-law weren’t glammed up and that she was wearing her workout outfit when they went inside the store.

“So, pumasok kami sa store na ito, tapos nagtanong kami, nag inquire kami magkano kasi walang presyo. Tapos hindi kami pinapansin,” Diana expressed.

Photo from Diana Zubiri on Youtube

They tried asking again, but they were told to wait for their turn until someone was available to assist them. The former actress explained that she understood since there were many customers. However, she wished the approach could have been more excellent and professional.

She felt the staff was uninterested in them because of their dress. And because of that, Diana and her mother-in-law walked out.

Photo from Louis Vuitton

In the same vlog, Diana showed that she was all glammed up and planned to return to the store with her mother-in-law to see if they would be treated differently. After the video, the former actress shared that they were indeed approached differently and were being accommodated.

“Nakabawi ang Louis Vuitton. Hindi kagaya nung una. Hindi ko lang sure kung dahil ba nakaayos na rin kami,” Diana said in her vlog. “I’m sure meron din konti iyon, may konting dating din na nakaayos ka, medyo presentable ka. Pero, sana hindi maging gano’n ang judgment ng lahat ng store,” she added.

10 Filipino Superstitions During New Years

While being superstitious is one of the top Filipino characteristics, some if not most modern Filipinos now recognize how absurd a number of these superstitions are. A lot have let go of these beliefs, and if not, at least skeptical. But if there’s a time where the line between superstitions and traditions is blurred in the Philippines, it’s the new years.

These superstitions mostly stem from Chinese beliefs, and because the Chinese are perceived as very lucky in the Philippines because of their ability to attract money, hence are basically synonymous to being negosyante, the nation followed suit. These are the top 10 Filipino superstitions followed in the new years.

  1. DISPLAYING ROUND FRUITS ON THE TABLE

The presence of circular objects is something that cannot be missed at a Filipino household during the new years. This is because circles are considered a lucky shape and placing it everywhere means you are going to attract good things for the rest of the year.

As believed, the shape represents continuity because it does not have a start or an end. Apples, oranges, grapes, and the like overflow all Filipino tables at this time of year.

  1. CHICKENLESS TABLE

There is an old Filipino saying that goes “isang kahig, isang tuka”. This denotes the life of living paycheck to paycheck, earning some to spend it all at once. This superstition is not as followed as the others on the list, but some still consider chickens as bad luck as chickens feed from the ground, symbolizing struggle.

  1. MEDIA NOCHE

Filipinos go all their way to have enough to have a handa during the new years, no matter how little. Greeting the new years with a lot of food on the table is to be inviting good spirits, basically making the food as an offering for them to bless the house with.

Before the clock strikes 12, the table will already have been completed. After the fireworks and warm new year greetings, families welcome the year by eating.

  1. VISITING THE CHURCH

As a heavily Catholic country, it isn’t a surprise that Filipinos still practice their faith on the brink of the new year. Families go to church to pray for blessings in the year to come, and to express their gratitude for the ones they already received.

  1. WEARING POLKA DOTTED CLOTHES

I told you the tradition of circles will go beyond fruits. Wearing dotted clothing is one of the most commonly practiced superstitions because of its abundance of circles. Polka dots symbolize fortune, as Pythagoras himself considered circles as the most perfect shape. It is the symbol of eternity, magic, and in earlier times, the triumph of a hunt.

In the words of Yayoi Kusama, polka dots are “round, soft, colorful, senseless and unknowing, polka dots become movement.”

  1. JUMPING HIGH WHEN THE CLOCK STRIKES 12

As someone who was once told to just drink Cherifer instead, jumping when the clock struck 12 was something everybody did in the neighborhood. This practice is believed to make someone tall, hence, mostly kids who have yet to get their growth spurts eagerly participate in the superstition.

  1. EATING PANCIT FOR A LONGER LIFE

This is one of the biggest Chinese influences in the Philippines. Pancit, or any noodle at all, represents long life because of their length. Being one of the staple dishes in Filipino cuisine, it isn’t hard to accidentally participate in this tradition either way. This is believed to bring luck and another year of good health.

  1. COIN DISPLAYS

From actual coins to candy coins, it’s not surprising to see money being put on plates on Filipino tables. In a similar principle with preparing a feast to attract good spirits, coins are put forth for good fortune, as well as to serve as an offering. Filipinos also put coins in their pockets for good fortune, and to shake during midnight for additional noise.

  1. CREATING LOUD NOISE

If some people say they don’t believe in the other traditions, this might be one they truly cannot escape. There is nothing louder than when 12 am strikes on the 1st of January, wherever you may be in the country. Filipinos do everything, and I mean everything, to make noise at this time of the year. Families stock up on pyrotechnics, horns, and anything you can think of.

Fireworks are always a show stealer because of how beautifully they light up the sky and how noticeable their loudness is. This tradition is made to drive away evil spirits, and Filipinos hold onto this belief so hard that they clank their cooking pans together or honk their vehicles for maximum noise.

  1. OPENING DOORS AND WINDOWS

Opening doors for Filipinos in the new years is a figurative practice that is done literally as it says. Opening doors means to open your doors to let good spirits and positive vibes in one’s home, bringing in blessings and good fortune.

Whether or not these practices have any actual impact in the way Filipinos think they do, they still have deep symbolic value considering how they make up our new years. They bring families together, and make sure that there is never either a dull moment or corner as we welcome the year.

2023 has indeed been a year full of the most massive breakups in the Philippine showbiz industry. Who would have thought that 2023 would mark the end of the love story of PH’s biggest celebrity couples?

Of course, we won’t let this year end without looking back at the massive breakups of 2023. Are you ready to backtrack?

  1. KATHNIEL

Starting off strong with PH’s beloved Kathniel, the love team of Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla. The couple announced their breakup on November 30, 2023, through separate Instagram posts.

Kathniel went from reel to real when they started from being co-stars to a love team and then officially making it official. They are or were the Philippines’ top ships, which was why fans were devastated by the news. But one thing is certain: each will still strive with their respective endeavors.

  1. KIM CHIU AND XIAN LIM (KIMXI)

For the remaining weeks of 2023, fans and netizens have suspected that Kim and Xian haven’t been on good terms or have broken up. Kim gave vague answers to the speculations. People also quickly noticed that Xian slowly deleted his YouTube videos with Kim.

Showbiz reporter Ogie Diaz also spilled the tea that Kim and Xian had broken up for two months. And finally, just days before Christmas, Kim confirmed that they had decided to end their 12-year relationship.

  1. SARAH LAHBATI AND RICHARD GUTTIEREZ

From getting engaged to separating ways, that’s how Sarah and Richard’s love story went. Netizens were quick to point out how the ex-couple stopped posting stories of each other on Instagram.

Adding fuel to the fire, Richard’s mom, Annabelle Rama, spilled that the actor had been living with her for almost a month.

  1. MILES OCAMPO AND ELIJAH CANLAS

Genuine— that’s how people described Miles and Elijah’s relationship. However, no matter how genuine it was, the couple still experienced challenges and decided to part ways.

The senior high actor expressed that they both went through a rough patch because of personal issues. He also stated that they broke up on good terms and had no ill feelings.

It is a year of broken hearts indeed. But here’s a thought: a breakup is not the end of the world. And for some of the above-mentioned celebrities, or even all of them, this is just a nudge to a new beginning.
