We sometimes write letters to ourselves to be read in the future, “To my future self…” but what if you meet your past self? What would you do?
When Veronica Balayo met herself in a Painting at the National Museum of Fine Arts, all she could do was post it on TikTok. In her multiple-photo post, a vintage Painting of Belen Ocampo can be seen on the first slide, and on the third and second slides are photos of Veronica Balayo standing beside the vintage painting of Belen Ocampo and their resemblance is uncanny. Balayo captioned the post, “Am I her reincarnation? 😱”

The post went viral and received mixed reactions from TikTok users because of the undeniable facial resemblance of the two. As of January 31, the TikTok post garnered 12.6 Million views and 1.4 Million likes.
The vintage painting of Belen Ocampo was part of the 43 other foto-óleos “Larawan at Litrato: Foto-óleo and Picture Portraits in the Philippines (1891-1953).” Turned out, Belen Ocampo is the mother of the historian Ambeth Ocampo which has reached him. On his Facebook Page he posted a screenshot of the TikTok post that also gained traction with 244K reactions and 4.4K comments as of January 31, 2024.

“Trending on Tiktok video this morning was the post of Veronica Balayo, a recent visitor to the National Museum who resembles a photo-oleo of my mother from the 1950’s! The video has earned over 400,000 likes!”
Post from Ambeth R. Ocampo on Facebook
In an interview with Esquire Philippines, it was found that Balayo was originally from Davao City and was in Manila on a work trip with colleagues. To make the most out of their Manila trip, they visited the National Museum of Fine Arts and checked out the exhibit. When she saw the vintage painting, she couldn’t contain her surprise and confirmed from her colleagues the unmistakable semblance.
“The similarity was unmistakable,” Balayo said in her interview with Esquire Philippines.
Afterward, she took a picture alongside the portrait, only to discover that Belen Ocampo, the mother of a Filipino historian was also the model for the Philippine Travel Bureau (now Department of Tourism).
After reading Balayo’s story, do you think reincarnation is real?
Cobra or Banakon sightings have increased in Cebu since December 2023. This has caused alarm for locals because of the danger it poses to their safety.
Photo from CNN
Dr. Beethoven Bongon, a toxicologist at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) reassured that there is an antivenom for cobra bites as long as the victim bitten was allowed to receive the shot.
He also added that the antivenom available at the VSMMC Poison Control Center is polyvalent. This means that the antivenom is effective for three types of cobra species: the King Cobra, the Philippine Cobra, and the Samar Cobra.
This is different from the monovalent antivenom, Purified Cobra Antivenin (Pcav) only effective against Philippine Cobra. And this can only be obtained from the health research facility Research Institute of Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Muntinlupa City, Metro Manila.
Photo from A-Z Animals
In an interview with Sunstar 7, Ruff Vincent Valdevieso, coordinator of the national immunization program at the Department of Health (DOH) 7 that Pcav is limited and not commercially available. The said antivenom is not available in the Region because it is not part of the priority list.
Bongon also emphasized that not all victims need antivenom because not all snake bites are venomous. In the snake bite incidents in Region 7—especially in Cebu, snake bite cases involve 90% non-venomous snakes. This means that the usage of the polyvalent antivenom rarely occurred.
Bongon advised that when an individual is bitten by a snake, the victim should be brought to the nearest local health center. Once the kind of snake has been determined—especially if it is venomous- health experts will coordinate with the Poison Control Center to assess the situation and determine whether antivenom is truly necessary.
The Philippine media landscape, workers, and viewers alike mourned the closure of CNN Philippines.

Whispers and Rumors of CNN Philippines’ closure were finally confirmed in a general assembly on the morning of January 29, 2024. CNN Philippines will stop its operations on January 31 on all platforms.
This announcement was also publicized on its channel through a broadcast advisory and an official announcement.
The company said, “It is with deep regret that the management of Nine Media Corporation (NMC) announces the discontinuation of its news and production operations on all media platforms, branded as CNN Philippines (CNNPH), effective 31 January 2024. The decision follows significant financial losses sustained over the past years, despite rigorous efforts to adapt and innovate in a rapidly evolving and challenging media landscape.”

The closure of the predominantly English-language TV Channel affects not only the Philippine media landscape but also the 300 employees, contractors, and suppliers. However, the company assured that “severance packages” are given.
In a TV Broadcast, CNN Philippines thanked their staff and employees, “To our staff, we thank you for your commitment and dedication. To our partners, including CNN Worldwide/Turner Broadcasting Corporation, we are grateful for your support. And to our viewers, our sincerest gratitude for your loyalty and trust over the past nine years.”

This media closure now leaves us with a question: can News and Journalism survive in the business arena?
New Zealand has caught the attention of many since its success in mitigating the spread of COVID-19 in the country far earlier than any other. Aside from that, it is also a country that is simply rich in culture and sceneries, and there is a lot to witness in this mountainous island.
Photo from Britannica
Following Australia whose Work and Holiday Visa has been signed by Foreign Affairs Secretary, Enrique Manalo, and Australian Ambassador to the Philippines, Hae Kyong Ku last year, New Zealand now opens its borders with the same visa. The 2024 New Zealand Working Holiday Visa offers Filipinos the chance to work and study for up to a year, with the application kicking off this March 12 at 10 AM, New Zealand Daylight Time.
Photo from Philippine News Agency
Filipinos in ages 18 to 30 are eligible for this program, and only 100 visas are issued each cycle. One has to secure their spot in this quota, and to do so, they must be thorough with the application process. This starts with submitting an online form to the New Zealand Immigration website, followed by the submission of other required documents and an application fee of NZD 455 (approximately ₱15,673).
The chance to make it to the applications is narrow as they immediately close once the 100 slots are issued. After which, results will immediately be released within two months.
Photo from Rappler
Requirements for the New Zealand Working Holiday Visa:
Passport
Proof of Funds (amounting to NZD 4,200)
Proof of Onward Travel
Health and Travel Insurance
Education
Ability to speak English
Proof of Good Health
Proof of Good Character
Despite the narrow chance, going to a different country to pursue work and/or education while embarking on a journey that is far from what you call home is still worth the shot. If you’ve been dreaming of this opportunity, you best gather your requirements quickly and submit your application. Best of luck!
Chief of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Mactan Cebu, Engr. Alfredo Quiblat announces the persistence of cool mornings and evenings in Cebu as the northeast monsoon (locally known as “amihan”) intensifies.
Photo from Philippine Star
He mentioned that the cool and dry air coming from Siberia and mainland China affects amihan, leading to the drop in temperature that Cebuanos are currently experiencing. The direction of the wind coming from the aforementioned areas will result to a chilly weather until the end of January, and possibly the welcoming days of February as well. With the winter currently in full swing, the occurrence in our area stands without question.
Photo from Scotty’s Action Sports Network
The chief meteorologist explained that previous data shows that January is typically the coldest month of the year, with an average temperature of 24-30 degrees Celsius. While El Niño balances out the current temperature, amihan will continue to bring Cebuanos this weather.
Photo from HICAPS Mktg. Corp.
Quiblat informs the public that despite this, there is nothing to worry about with the wind speed in Central Visayas is currently at 40 kilometers per hour, down from 50 kilometers per hour recorded last Saturday. The chance of rain showers in Cebu also happens to be low, and even if it does, only drizzles will take form until the end of the month.
When something really great or terrible happens to us at a certain time, we cling to those moments because they are things we aren’t really able to let go of. For the good, it’s easy to look back into them for relief. They’re the tiny parts of the mosaic making up an individual that may be easy to look at either because they are innocent, or simply vibrant. Sometimes the good of the past even clouds how we see the present because of how much we want it back. The inability to let go of something always leaves one frozen.

A damaged past is a different story, and how I see it, while its converse is so pretty that it just keeps our heads turned for the most part, this one simply pulls us back with its bare hands because it necessitates us to face it.
An inner child is a metaphorical version of oneself that is stuck in childhood for a landscape-defining experience one had in such formative years. Growing beyond your past is easier said than done, but if this has ever been a concern for you, many people are with you in trying to make sense out of the emotions, habits, and repercussions the human mind is very capable of as a result of various occurrences at a time we probably barely remember. The effects linger.
Our experiences and lives are distinct from one another, and at the same time, shared by many. The value in a common struggle is that help and understanding are both within arm’s reach. Here are things you can do to heal your inner child.
1. Acknowledge the cracks
Acceptance is always the first step to everything. Acknowledging what’s wrong can hurt and can bring forward a lot of wounds you most likely have not healed from, but it is necessary to come to terms with the fact that something has to be fixed, and you have to stop putting a band-aid on it, hoping it would go away the next day.
A damaged past is the result of years and years of anguish, and for some, transgenerational trauma. Ending the cycle means to see it for what it is to finally be able to draw the line.
Photo from Unsplash
2. Introspection
Knowing that there is something wrong is already a very big thing. But for some, it also leads to being stuck and a warranted self-pity. Revisiting your memories is a trip to a rose garden, hence, as an adult, you ought to reflect on your realizations and give yourself the perspective you could not afford to have when you were smaller.
Photo from Unsplash
3. Identify triggers
Albeit being more matured and knowledgeable, we are still an extended consciousness from our past selves. Whatever trauma we might have acquired before can very possibly affect us now and manifest in different ways. A step to take to heal and avoid being triggered is to identify them in the first place.
The distress we experience coming from specific things can help identify what exactly we need to heal from, and protect ourselves better.
Photo from Unsplash
4. Journal
Keeping track of our emotions helps so much. Nothing stays constant, and with the fluctuating nature of our days and experiences, it’s important to take note of what’s on your mind. Not only is it a way to identify patterns more efficiently, but seeing the thoughts we carry inside our heads on paper just hits different. The relief in self-expression could be one of the reasons, but personally, it comforts me to put feelings into words because they finally become tangible. It makes me feel like I can finally deal with them.
Photo from Unsplash
5. Seek advice, surround yourself with support
We are made up of our minds and bodies and experiences, and we are also made up of the people we keep around us. Those we trust enough to tell our best and worst moments to see us in a way we never see ourselves. There is always something you can miss, and it is so important to hear the perspectives of those who genuinely care about us. Ask your loved ones what they think. Talk about it over drinks or on a cold Tuesday night. Just make sure you are surrounded with support and know that you are being looked after.
Photo from Unsplash
6. Therapy
The current times have done such a stellar job in destigmatizing mental health issues that it is already a topic being discussed by many in such a light it was never spoken about before. While we still have a long way to go to guarantee accessibility to therapy, it is noteworthy to mention that it is an option you can definitely take to deal with past trauma.
The support you receive from loved ones is a lot, yes, however, it is as important to heed the advice of medical professionals who can help you unfold the multitude of layers in your past, and give you the sufficient guidance, or medical aid if necessary. There is absolutely nothing wrong with reaching out for help.
Photo from Unsplash
7. Set boundaries
Being a product of a broken past can lead to the normalization of unhealthy relationships. Some open themselves too much out of fear of abandonment, some push everyone else away because of the same reasoning. Nonetheless, setting healthy boundaries is essential to keep one’s relationship a safe space for both parties, acknowledging needs and limits. Establishing boundaries is a step forward to ending toxic patterns that one may have previously allowed due to a wishful inner child.
Well-defined boundaries can help achieve regulation in one’s emotions, as well as protect oneself and improve trust in the self and in others.

8. Little things
In modern day discourse, this is what they define as “healing your inner child.” While it’s not as simple as this as the packaging of the narrative just screams “give into consumerism”, I do think that it is a step that is as fulfilling as the others on the list. You can buy your dream toys or whatever you liked as a child that you were never given, simply give yourself the satisfaction of appreciating things that adulthood makes seem trivial.
I do also think, however, that the “little things” extend far beyond buying. I always think of Rule #32 in Zombieland (2009) – Enjoy the Little Things. “Zombieland is harsh, enjoy happiness where it can be found to stay sane.”
It simply could be anything.
Photo from Unsplash
9. Heal without forgiving
In literature, media, or even in a Google search, forgiveness is always one of the top things you can find when you look for ways to heal. And yes, forgiveness is important. If there’s something to mend, then of course you have to mend it. However, the value society has placed on forgiveness turned it into a necessity. You do not have to forgive someone who deeply wronged you, as much as you are not entitled to forgiveness if you’re that person to someone too.
Peace is often declared to go hand in hand with forgiveness. But that is not always the case. Only you can assess whether or not you have to give it to someone, but never pressure yourself into doing something you know is uncomfortable for you. You can wish someone well and also not hold yourself responsible for something that can possibly trigger you, or damage your well-being. You can move forward without forgiving. It is always your choice.
Photo from Unsplash
10. Take care
Because none of this amounts to anything if you don’t. Do it for yourself, and do it while protecting every aspect of your well-being. In the tumult of existence, putting yourself in the backseat is very easy, but perhaps if you think about who you’re seeking this justice for, maybe you’ll be more likely to treat yourself like you’re actually delicate and swerve the bumps on the road with more care. Do it for the little child who once was you.
