Exposing “PISO FARES”: A List of Extra Taxes & Fees You Still Have to Pay!

0

As the holiday season comes, more and more airlines offer “PISO” fares with the promise of an affordable airline ticket; but, does this promotion actually mean you’ll only get to pay 1-Peso?

Photo from Ram Mancelita

Ah, the glorious discounted offers of “Piso” fares! Everyone loves it! You all love it! But, for seasoned travelers, many know that despite the name, it doesn’t literally mean that the plane ticket is only 1-Peso a pax, right? Well, its name is only for pure marketing tactics but it is still a guarantee that you’ll get lower prices as compared to its original fare rates; usually more than 50% off!

So, why does the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) or Civil Aeronautics Board and other trade authorities allow this sort of marketing scheme? Turns out, most airlines actually do offer a type of “PISO” fare, but, not the whole ticket price, just the base fare! That means that as a passenger of a flight, you’ll still be responsible for other taxes and fees associated with your ride; and I learned that from being a travel consultant for 3 years!

WHAT ARE THE TAXES AND FEES?

Here’s a list of common taxes and fees you might encounter when booking a flight to and from the Philippines:

Terminal Fee

Based on its name, a terminal fee is what you’ll have to pay whether you arrive or depart from a certain airport. This means that it can vary depending on the airport. You ask what it’s for? Well, it’s to aid in maintaining the terminal facilities and its services, of course. Considering that last year, NAIA (Ninoy Aquino International Airport) reported a number of more than 45 million passengers who stepped on their terminals for flights, it’s no wonder that airport terminals are high maintenance!

For domestic terminals, the fee can range between Php 50.00 to Php 300.00 while for international ones, Php 650.00 to Php 850.00! Now, add a One-Peso coin to that, then you’ve got a minimum plane ticket of Php 651.00 if you’re going abroad while Php 51.00 if you’re just traveling within the country.

International Passenger Service Charge (IPSC)

A terminal fee may not be much, but how about when you add another type of fee for traveling abroad, simply because you are departing from an international airport? Sounds sketchy? Well, it’s not; because the International Passenger Service Charge or the IPSC is that specific tax! It is also indicated on your plane ticket’s fare breakdown as the “LI” tax and can range between Php 550.00 to Php 1,000.00 and above, depending on the airline.

Fuel Surcharge

We all know that fuel and gas prices can go high and low without any notice, right? And that’s one of the reasons why airlines impose a surcharge – to make sure that fluctuations in fuel prices are covered accordingly. Aside from that, there may also be other fees that could take up hours to indicate on a plane ticket, so they’ll just wrap it up in one neat bow and call it in one name.

Travel Tax

For international travelers, this tax is levied on Filipinos and permanent residents departing from the Philippines.

Aviation Security Fee

Airports are considered one of the safest places in a country, simply because of the high alert security that each terminal and area has. So, to maintain the topnotch security measures, some airports require an Aviation Security Fee to be paid to cover security-related costs.

VAT (Value Added Tax)

VAT is everywhere and at anything in the Philippines, so at this point, it’s not even a surprise that it also exists in airline tickets.

Booking Fee

The first time I booked a flight, I was shocked when I saw the total price go from Php 600.00 to Php 850.00 with just one click; turns out, the app that I used for the online booking mandates a Php 250.00 add-on charge for the booking fee! Depending on the airline and booking method, there might be an additional fee for processing your reservation so check with your options first, prior to hitting that “Book Now!” button.

Photo from Ram Mancelita

Aside from the list above, there are also some fees that you can opt out of, but should know about, such as an insurance fee, baggage fee, and a seat selection fee. This is why you should always check with the airline for a detailed breakdown of fees and taxes, as these can vary by airline, destination, and type of fare.

And if you’ve got anything else to add, Sugboanon, feel free to state your thoughts in the comments below! It’s wise to know your airfare, but even wiser to share it with your fellas.

The Reality of Cebu’s Coastal Pollution: Why It’s a Major Threat to Sugboanon Tourism

0

CEBU – Unfortunately, our cruise along the coastal waters of Cebu Island was disturbed by the views that greeted us.

Actual & raw footage showing the floating trash on Cebuano waters | Video by Lenie Lanojan

Our experience was disrupted by a pungent odor and a distressing sight: Cebu’s coastal areas filled with an overwhelming amount of floating trash!

Pasil, one of the barangays in Cebu dealing with poverty and informal settlements, is also plagued by severe waste management issues. Despite its proximity to the city’s largest and fastest-developing area, the South Road Properties, it seemed to have been overlooked by the government. While efforts have been made to enhance the surrounding roads and infrastructure, the equally crucial need for effective waste management and clean waterways needs to be addressed urgently.

It’s time for the government and us, Sugboanons, to turn our focus to our coastal shores and address these pressing issues!

How Floating Trash Impacts Cebu’s Coastal Beauty

“The Red Bottle” | An empty bottle of C2 is seen floating along the waters of Cebu during our cruise | Photo by Lenie Lanojan

As we drifted through the troubled waters, our tour guide revealed that this very route is being promoted as the official route for future cruises aimed at foreign tourists, which may cause potential harm to the tourism industry. For visitors seeking the peaceful beauty of Cebu, encountering such scenes could lead to negative reviews and tarnish our reputation. It could discourage repeat visits and affect the island’s long-term appeal, particularly given Cebu’s status as a premier destination in the Visayan region.

The loss of tourism due to pollution is a loss for all of us.

Local Voices: Residents’ Thoughts About the Growing Pollution Problem

To uncover the true effects of the pollution, we explored the Pasil area and its surroundings. Marisa (not her real name), a long-time resident, expressed her dissatisfaction, saying, “Mao najud na diri. Kung ganahan kag way baho, adto ka sa mga subdivision! [This is how it is here. If you want to be free from the odor, go to the subdivisions!]” She mentioned that there have been efforts to clean up the area, but more than a one-time cleanup is needed for maintaining cleanliness. “Ang pagmintinar man gud ang lisud kay sa sugod, lami pa kay na; pero, di man nimo makontrol ang taw [It’s the maintainance that makes it difficult; it can start off well, but in the long run, you can’t control other people’s action],” she shared.

It is important to note that Pasil is not just a residential area but also a livelihood hub! Most people thrive on the nearby fish port. Imagine a sea of floating tires, unused plastics, and even used diapers drifting near a boat filled with fish that’ll soon be served to dinner!

But of course, with the correction from the government and the collective efforts of the barangays, a brighter, cleaner future is within reach, right?

A Change of Mindset Is What We Need

Clean-Up Drive | Photo by the Barangay Pasil Official Facebook Page

We dug deeper to know what efforts were made and found out that in an attempt to address the concern, cleanup drives of the nearby areas were done such as the “City Wide Cleanup Drive”. These drives have significantly improved the cleanliness of the barangay, demonstrating that their collective efforts can make a difference. But, amidst many years of trying, they have seen that the issue may have lessened, but it is still there. Now, what is the root cause?

It turns out the lack of respect towards nature and etiquette towards one another was what prevented their progress. “Naa ma’y clean-up drives ug mga unsa pa na diha, pero, naa raman jud gihapon ang hugaw [We have done clean-up drives and many other things, but it’s still there!],” Caloy (not his real name), a resident exclaimed. The hard-headedness of some residents and visitors in the area results in the never-ending problems with pollution. People still throw their garbage at sea and let the waves do their thing: spreading the trash around!

“Daghan ang di mutuo nga malimpyo pa ang Pasil kay mao naman na sukad sauna pa.”

He also highlighted that there were awareness programs that constantly reminded them to be more environmentally forward, “Daghan ang di mutuo nga malimpyo pa ang Pasil kay mao naman na sukad sauna pa.” Therefore, the unfavorable living conditions and polluted areas can be traced back to generational norms; most residents will settle for what is becoming their normal and refuse to change their mindsets. To break this cycle, we can start by educating our children about the importance of a clean environment, organizing more frequent cleanup drives, and implementing stricter penalties for littering.

#EcoSugboBetterCebu: A Shared Commitment to Preservation

By addressing the issue of coastal trash and embracing responsible travel practices, we can help ensure that our Sugboanon treasures are preserved for future generations. Here’s what we can do:

Think About The Bigger Picture

Everything starts in our minds, such as our decision to do something and take on an advocacy. So, think about what will happen in the next years to come and make your actions have a butterfly effect with each passing day.

Start Small

You don’t have to host an entire clean-up drive with 50 people immediately, instead, what you can do is partner up or participate in existing ones. This way, you’ll get to build your community and know who you’ll be reaching out to for the same advocacy.

Commit & Preach

If you’re one with a wandering soul, it can be tough to stay within one area; so, instead, you can begin by committing with yourself that you’ll observe AND keep on choosing eco-friendly options. Then, opt to educate but do it in an encouraging way that lets both old and new generations see the importance of what you’re doing to the environment.

As we explore Cebu and the wider Philippines, let’s do so with a commitment to sustainability and a dedication to keeping our coastlines clean and beautiful. Together, we can make a lasting impact and celebrate the true essence of this remarkable region. Together, we can #EcoSugbo and make a #BetterCebu!

Your 13th Month Pay Isn’t a Good Enough Reason to Stay

0

In less than four months, companies will be distributing their employees’ 13th-month pay. But is waiting for it really worth it?

Photo from Canva

“Gikapoy najud ko. Mag-update na ko’g resume kay di najud ko,” said my friend who has been working in the BPO industry for what seems like an eternity. Despite her efforts to manage her thoughts, time, finances, and family life, her issues persist. She has become accustomed to a schedule where she works on weekends and has her rest days during the weekdays. According to her, the most challenging part of her job isn’t even the management—though that’s a factor—but the environment around her.

As a friend who tends to offer nonsense advice, I asked, “Are you sure?” The reason I posed this question is because I was once in her shoes. I finished my question with, “Are you sure you’re not going to wait for the 13th month?” Her reaction—a sigh—reflected the reality that while “Happiness is free,” achieving it requires mental, financial, and physical stability.

So, here are some “IF” reasons you might want to consider if you’re thinking it’s time to resign from your current job:

Your job is consuming your life.

Photo from Canva

It’s perfectly fine to have a routine. You might wake up at 7 AM, take a bath, have breakfast, and be ready by 8 AM, then catch a jeepney at 8:30 AM to start work at 9 AM. But what happens after you clock out? Do you still carry work home with you? Unless you’re a virtual assistant or a nurse on-call, there’s no reason to bring your work home! You should leave all work-related tasks behind when you leave the office. You shouldn’t be calling clients after hours or chasing absentee employees once you’re off work. Keeping work and personal life separate is crucial; otherwise, you won’t have time to pursue your passions.

You’re using work as an excuse even on your rest days.

Photo from Canva

Whether you follow religious or physical education guidelines, everyone needs a rest day. Use this time to enjoy a sweet beverage, read a good book, or watch a horror flick with popcorn. If you feel you don’t deserve this downtime because you’ll return to a mountain of work on Monday, that’s a red flag. Work shouldn’t be your excuse for not enjoying your rest days.

Your skin looks dull.

Photo from Canva

Ever heard the saying that people glow when they’re in a great, healthy relationship? This applies to your relationship with your job too. Take a look in a well-lit mirror—natural light is best. If your skin appears dull and the bags under your eyes are pleading for sleep, it’s a sign of excessive stress that no skincare routine can fix. Age is a factor too, but stress can make you look worse than it should.

You’re experiencing persistent coughs and colds, coupled with anxiety and depression.

Photo from Canva

Your body knows you better than your own thoughts. If you’ve been battling persistent coughs, colds, and ongoing anxiety or depression, it’s time to consider resigning. This is especially true if you’ve sought help from doctors or psychiatrists without relief. If stress from your job is impacting your health, it’s a clear sign to move on.

Your promotion is only in title, not in salary.

Photo from Canva

Imagine being promoted to president with an entry-level salary. If you’re taking on more tasks, it’s reasonable to ask for appropriate compensation—pizza doesn’t count! Your skills and efforts should be rewarded accordingly, not just recognized with a certificate.

You constantly think about quitting.

Photo from Canva

This is the most telling sign. If you wake up each day thinking, “I want to resign,” and the thought persists throughout the day, it’s time to make a change. Continuously contemplating quitting indicates dissatisfaction and a lack of fulfillment. Resigning from a job that makes you feel inadequate doesn’t make you a quitter—it means you recognize your worth and are taking steps to reclaim your happiness.

But I Need the Money!

Yes, it’s understandable that financial concerns are a real issue, but let’s face it: Are you really expecting to see your workload magically lighten or receive a salary increase after reading this article? Sorry, but that’s not how it works. You need to take action for yourself! If you’ve checked off all the signs on this list, it’s time to make a decisive move. Stand up, make a firm decision for your own well-being, and file that resignation. It’s about prioritizing your health and peace over short-term financial gains.

On the other hand, if you decide to stay, it’s no surprise—money is a powerful motivator, regardless of one’s beliefs or background. Do what feels right for you, but remember, you’ve been warned, Sugboanon.

Learn from the Experts: Exploring the Power of Effective Trading Strategies

0

In the fast-paced world of financial markets, trading has evolved from traditional methods to a vast array of sophisticated strategies. Whether you’re a novice or an experienced trader, the pursuit of consistent profits requires not only a deep understanding of market mechanics but also the adoption of well-planned strategies. Among these, copy trading has emerged as a popular tool, allowing individuals to mimic the trades of more experienced investors. This innovative approach has provided many beginners with a learning curve that doesn’t involve steep losses, offering a unique gateway into the world of trading.

But while copy trading can offer a fast track to learning, it’s only one piece of the puzzle. To truly excel in trading, understanding the broader landscape of strategies is essential. A solid strategy acts as a blueprint, guiding decisions based on a trader’s goals, risk tolerance, and market conditions. Here, we’ll dive into some key trading strategies that can serve as valuable components of your trading toolkit, helping you navigate the complex and often volatile financial markets.

Trend Following Strategy

The trend-following strategy is one of the most popular approaches used by traders across various asset classes, from stocks and commodities to cryptocurrencies. The fundamental idea is simple: identify the direction of the market trend and trade in the same direction. If the market is trending upwards, a trend-following trader will look for opportunities to buy (go long), while in a downtrend, they will seek to sell (go short).

To implement this strategy effectively, traders often rely on technical analysis tools like moving averages, trendlines, and momentum indicators such as the Relative Strength Index (RSI). The key to success with trend following lies in the trader’s ability to distinguish between a genuine trend and short-term fluctuations or “noise” in the market. Patience is crucial here, as trends can take time to develop fully, and premature exits can limit profit potential.

Photo from Canva

Mean Reversion Strategy

In contrast to trend following, the mean reversion strategy is based on the premise that asset prices will revert to their historical averages over time. When a stock, currency, or commodity deviates significantly from its average price, a mean reversion trader sees an opportunity. They will typically buy assets that are undervalued (below their historical average) and sell assets that are overvalued (above their historical average).

The challenge with mean reversion strategies is identifying the right moment to enter or exit a trade. While historical price data can provide a reference point, markets don’t always follow predictable patterns. Risk management is vital, as prices can deviate further from their average for longer than expected. Technical indicators like Bollinger Bands and moving average convergence divergence (MACD) are commonly used to help pinpoint these opportunities.

Photo from Canva

Breakout Trading Strategy

Breakout trading is all about identifying key levels of support or resistance and placing trades when the price breaks through these levels. This strategy aims to capitalize on the increased momentum that typically follows a breakout. When a market breaks above a resistance level, it’s often seen as a sign of bullish strength, and traders will enter long positions. Conversely, a breakdown below support signals bearish strength, prompting short trades.

Successful breakout trading requires a keen eye for identifying significant support and resistance zones, which can be found using chart patterns like triangles, rectangles, or head and shoulders. Traders often set stop-loss orders just outside these zones to protect against false breakouts—situations where the price briefly moves beyond support or resistance but then reverses direction.

Photo from Canva

Copy trading

Copy trading has revolutionized the way beginners and even seasoned traders engage with financial markets. This innovative approach allows less experienced traders to mirror the trades of more successful investors, effectively piggybacking on their expertise. Through various platforms, traders can connect their accounts to those of professional or high-performing traders, automatically replicating their trades in real-time. This method offers a hands-on learning experience and reduces the steep learning curve that often accompanies independent trading. For those who lack the time or in-depth knowledge to research and analyze markets daily, copy trading provides an efficient way to participate in financial markets while still benefiting from the insights of experts.

Photo from Canva

Scalping Strategy

Scalping is a high-frequency trading strategy that involves making a large number of trades over a very short period, usually within minutes. The goal is to take advantage of small price movements in liquid markets. Scalpers make profits by repeatedly buying low and selling high within a short timeframe, relying on minor price changes rather than large moves.

This strategy requires a lot of concentration, quick decision-making, and often a well-automated trading system. Scalpers also need to be aware of transaction costs, as frequent trading can lead to significant fees that eat into profits. Despite the challenges, scalping can be highly profitable when executed correctly, especially in volatile markets like forex or cryptocurrencies.

Photo from Canva

Swing Trading Strategy

Swing trading is a strategy that aims to capture price movements within a medium-term timeframe, typically days to weeks. Swing traders look for opportunities to profit from both upward and downward price swings. Unlike scalpers or day traders who focus on short-term fluctuations, swing traders take a longer view, allowing them to ride out minor price changes in pursuit of more substantial gains.

This strategy often involves both technical and fundamental analysis. Swing traders use charts and indicators to identify potential entry and exit points, while also considering broader economic trends or company-specific news that might affect the price of an asset. Swing trading requires patience, as it involves holding positions for longer than a day, but it can offer a more balanced approach for those who find day trading too intense but still want to be actively involved in the markets.

Photo from Canva

Arbitrage Strategy

Arbitrage is a strategy that involves simultaneously buying and selling an asset in different markets to take advantage of price discrepancies. This could be as simple as buying a stock on one exchange where it is undervalued and selling it on another where it is overvalued. Arbitrage opportunities are often short-lived, requiring traders to act quickly and have access to multiple markets simultaneously.

While arbitrage is considered low-risk because it exploits price inefficiencies, it requires significant capital and fast execution to be profitable. Additionally, technological advancements and the rise of algorithmic trading have made pure arbitrage opportunities increasingly rare for individual traders.

Photo from Canva

So, which one should you use?

The financial markets offer a wide array of trading strategies, each with its own strengths, challenges, and suitability for different types of traders. Whether you choose to explore trend following, mean reversion, breakout trading, or any other strategy, the key to success lies in disciplined execution and continuous learning. While tools like copy trading can provide an initial boost, mastering your own strategies and adapting to changing market conditions will ultimately determine your success in trading.

Developing a well-rounded approach and staying flexible are crucial. Markets are dynamic, and what works today may not work tomorrow. Therefore, staying informed, refining your techniques, and understanding your risk tolerance are the pillars of successful trading over the long term.

Choosing to Understand than to Condemn: Why Hate Hurts YOU More

0

Letting go of hate after being wronged is never an easy pill to swallow, but guess what, YOU need it more than the opposing party!

It is natural to have a feeling of intense emotions, including anger and resentment after someone wronged you, or even disappointed you for failing to meet your specific needs. But, allowing these feelings to fester can lead to a cycle of negativity that harms your well-being and relationships.

So, here’s a guide on how to move beyond hatred and find healing:

Acknowledge Your Emotions

All emotions are important, take note of that! The first step in overcoming this feeling of hatred is to acknowledge it on your own without any judgment targeted to yourself or to the other party. It’s important to recognize that anger, hurt, and betrayal are valid responses to being wronged. Allow yourself to feel these emotions and understand that the “acknowledgment” is part of the healing process.

Take Time to Reflect on the Situation

Think about what happened and try to understand the context of everything, from the wrongdoings to the motivations behind it. And no, it doesn’t mean that you are actually excusing the behavior of the other party, you just have to gain some perspective to help you process your feelings and prevent it from overwhelming your thoughts! But, while reflection is great, excessive contemplation can keep you trapped in a cycle of anger and resentment as well, so allocate specific times to think about the situation, and then distract yourself with things that’ll make you feel better. This is when you must practice mindfulness.

Focus on Self-Care

It takes two to tango; if you got into the situation, then there must be an action that you took which may have caused it to rapture, too. But, guess what, the only one you can control is YOURSELF! So, invest in activities that promote your well-being and happiness such as exercising, getting into new hobbies, and spending time with supportive people can help shift your focus away from the negative experience..

Seek to Understand, Not to Condemn

Hate the sin, love the sinner, right? Well, if you’re not religious, then just for your own sake and mentality, try to understand the other person’s perspective without condoning their actions. That person may have acted out a certain way out of their own pain or ignorance, and understanding this can greatly help reduce the power of their actions over your emotions.

Seek Professional Help

In today’s generation, there are tons of therapy opportunities. So, when you need to have that emotional weight lifted or let go, then seek help; not from your friends nor family, but from a professional. Therapy can offer a safe space.

Practice Forgiveness

Forgiveness is a personal choice and doesn’t necessarily mean reconciling with the person who wronged you. It’s about freeing yourself from the burden of hatred. Let it be a gradual process, and it’s okay to take it one step at a time.

Avoid Associating

Last but not the least, avoid associating and categorizing in terms of hating an entire group just because you were wronged by one. Again, this is where the “hate the sin, love the sinner” quote comes in. Aside from breaking bonds and networks, it can also harm you mentally.

Remember, the path to moving beyond hate is not about forgetting or excusing but about reclaiming your peace and happiness. So, Sugboanons, DO IT FOR YOU; not for anyone else, but you!
