Sugboanons, let’s raise our Filipino & Cebuano pride as Elreen Ando and John Febuar Ceniza both won in weightlifting!
Elreen Ando
Elreen Ando finished strong in the International Weightlifting Federation World Cup in Phuket, Thailand, yesterday, April 3, 2024, Wednesday.
Ando won the 100 kg Snatch and 128 kg Clean & Jerk, bringing her total to 228kg. This led her to 7th place and increased her chances of being in the top 10 Olympic Qualification Ranking.

The Philippine Olympic Committee also confirmed Elreen Ando’s place in the Paris competition: “A thrilling win for Ando in the 59 kg category! Let’s give a round of applause to Hidilyn Diaz as well for her unwavering competitive spirit and sportsmanship. Mabuhay kayo! Mabuhay ang atletang Pilipino!,” stated the organization on social media.

A Barangay, Pasil, Cebu City, Ceniza resident marked a historic finish in the stacked men’s 61 kg division against 28 other competitors. He completed 168 kg of Clean & Jerk and 132 kg of Snatch for a total lift of 300 kg, placing him in fourth place.
Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo
On the other hand, Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo, the first ever Philippine Olympic gold medalist, missed her mark in the competition with her combined lift of 224kg against Ando and the others. Hidilyn has a 99kg Snatch and 123kg Clean & Jerk, which were 2kg off from her best lift last year in Saudi Arabia.
Despite her step down, Diaz was thankful as she says, “Thank you for supporting me … I’m always grateful. Even today, I’m grateful that I have true friends. Kahit manalo, matalo, nandiyan kayo. Maraming salamat sa prayers and support.”
As we celebrate these achievements, let us continue to support and uplift our local talents, nurturing a culture of excellence within our community. Mabuhay ang atletang Pilipino! Mabuhay ang Sugboanon!

Visimin.PH’s post is inspired by an actual meteorite phenomenon, the Lyrid meteorites that always passby Earth every April. But, it can’t be seen in the Philippines so there’s that!
April Fools’ Day is a Western celebration that’s being embraced by Filipinos nowadays. So, keep in mind the first of April when it comes next year so you won’t fall prey to the pranks. Always remember: VERIFY before hitting believing what you see on social media.
Sugboanons, the heat is on, so House Deputy Majority Leader Janette Garin advised skipping underwear altogether for a more breathable summer.
Photo from Canva
The former secretary of the Department of Health and the current House Deputy Majority Leader, Janette Garin, said that fungal infections often become rampant during the summer season, and women are the most susceptible.
“It’s not a sexually transmitted disease. It is due to the women’s natural flora in the intimate area, in the perineal area of women,” said Garin, adding that the area is the “perfect petri dish” for bacteria and fungi to grow. The candida albicans in the skin will multiply and become itchy. The more you scratch, the more it will itch. You should not scratch it.”
Photo from Canva
On the other hand, Health Secretary Ted Herbosa contradicted Garin’s opinion and advised against going commando to avoid yeast or vaginal fungal infection. “That advice is usually for candidiasis,” he said during the Senate committee hearing. “Wearing cotton underwear is an option if you don’t want to go commando because it also does not trap moisture,” Herbosa added, along with the information that men are not susceptible to infections due to different Ph levels in the genital areas.
Other Tips For the Tag-Init
Sip water
Photo from Canva
It is essential to stay hydrated, especially when temperatures are high. But always be careful when you arrive home from a very hot outdoor activity not to drink large amounts of water; instead, take sips of it. This is to prevent water poisoning, which is caused by overhydration, which results in the dilution of your electrolytes in the blood.
Wear light-colored clothes
Photo from Canva
Light-colored clothes absorb less heat than dark ones. So, bring out that pastel dress and stack on some fresh white shirts to keep your body cool.
Take a shower every day
Photo from Canva
Yes, the water levels in Cebu could be better, but starting your day with a shower is vital. This not only cools your body but also helps to calm your thoughts and improve your blood circulation. So, reschedule your kandingon attitude for the winter months and hit the bath every day!
Wear a deodorant
Photo from Canva
Last but not least, wear underarm deodorant! This is not just for you but for the people around you, especially when you take a jeepney, bus, or any public transportation. If you sweat a lot, it’s best to bring along an extra sachet or deo on the go, just in case.
What do you think, Sugboanons? Should we stop wearing underwear in the meantime or not?

April 1 is April Fools’ Day, yet many still fall for fake news and posts, such as this Leyte resident who tattooed his forehead based on a phony contest by a takoyaki business on social media.
Taragis Takoyaki, like all other businesses with an active online presence, posted an April Fools’ Day joke on Facebook. The post indicated a challenge for their followers to put a tattoo of the Taragis logo on their forehead. According to the poster, the first challenger to send proof of the tattooed forehead will get a Php100,000.00 reward.
Photo from Taragis Official Facebook Page
Ramil Albano, a resident of Leyte, wholeheartedly participated in the challenge and immediately went to a tattoo artist who inked the brand on his forehead. He even took photos of the process, showing proof of his actions. He also sent a direct message to the company to make sure that he would be the first challenger and the definite winner.
Photo from Taragis Official Facebook Page
Unfortunately, Albano failed to check whether the post’s validity was absolute. So, when he commented on the proof of his tattooed forehead on the same post, netizens were shocked! After the final tattoo was revealed, many demanded that Taragis Takoyaki give the reward.
A LESSON ON SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTABILITY
The Taragis Takoyaki management defended themselves, saying they shouldn’t be blamed for the incident, especially since they included an “April Fools” decor on the post itself. However, netizens rallied against the brand’s decision to wash their hands, especially since April Fools” is a Western type of celebration. Others commented that the incident could have been caused by cultural differences.
Screen grab from Taragis Facebook Page
After careful consideration and the constant bombardment of negative comments and messages, the management of Taragis Takoyaki decided to give Albano his reward of Php100,000.00.
Screen grab from the video posted on Taragis Facebook Page
Carl Quion shared a video of Taragis official Facebook page showing that he met with Albano and granted him the promised cash reward along with a public apology. “Sa lahat ng nagkaroon ng negatibong pananaw sa naging April Fool’s post namin, humihingi ako ng tawad. At sana magsilbing aral ito sa ating lahat … na maging responsable tayo sa lahat ng inu-upload natin,”. [Translation: “To all who thought that our April Fools post was not appropriate, we apologize. And hopefully, this incident will serve as a lesson … to be responsible for anything we upload on social media.]
Photo credits to the companies & brands who helped Albano
Aside from the Taragis management, Albano also received the sympathy of other businesses, especially when the story about his child with Down Syndrome started to circulate in the internet. One brand, Gluta Lounge, gave him Php10,000.00 along with a free tattoo removal service.
Here are the other brands offering help to Albano:
Project Glow Up – Php 100,00.00

BOSS Philippines – Php 10,000.00

Mr.Inasal Buhay na Tubig-Imus – Free inasal

Given the recent incident, it raises the question: should brands continue to post seasonal pranks and jokes during April Fools?
Get ready to say “SEA la vie!” as La Vie Liloan Beach Club opens its doors by the sparkling shores of Liloan, Cebu!
If you’re on the hunt for the ultimate summer escape, you’ve hit the jackpot with this gem of a resort. Freshly opened last March 23, 2024, La Vie Liloan Beach Club is your ticket to paradise with its picture-perfect coastlines, tropical breezes, and the soothing symphony of crashing waves.
The Origins Of La Vie Liloan Beach Club
La Vie is the avatar of restaurants: they’ve conquered the skies of Busay with La Parisienne Sky (former La Vie In The Sky), dazzled city dwellers with La Parisienne Cebu (former La Vie Parisienne), and now, they’re making waves by the sea!
The idea for their latest venture came from a moment of sheer beachside bliss in Liloan. The MLhuillers couldn’t resist the beauty of its shoreline, so they decided it was the perfect spot for a new La Vie branch. But what truly sets this beach club apart? It’s their menu!
Drawing inspiration from their beloved original restaurant, PINO!, La Vie’s beachside bites are an irresistible tribute to Filipino flavors. And if you’re looking for a dish that’ll make your taste buds do a happy dance, look no further than their mouthwatering “Dinakdakan” – it’s a seaside sensation you won’t find anywhere else!
What To Do At The La Vie Liloan Beach Club
1. Camp By The Beach
Pitch your tent on the sandy shores and soak in the salty breeze as you sleep under the stars at the La Vie Liloan Beach Club.
When the sun sets, you can gather around the crackling campfire, roast some marshmallows, and belt out your favorite campfire tunes while the soothing sounds of the sea provide the perfect backdrop.
2. Water Sports
Thanks to the monsoon, adventure-seekers can indulge in tons of thrilling activities, from parasailing to surfing, there’s no shortage of excitement for water sports enthusiasts. And let’s not forget the little ones – they can unleash their inner aviators with some kite-flying fun!
3. Chill With The Weekend Live Band
If you’re a soul longing to just stay put and enjoy a drink by the shore, then you can do that too! Rent out a cottage or lay on the sand for a picnic while enjoying the live band’s serenades on the weekend. You can join in on the fun as well by showcasing your singing talents.
OUR PERSONAL REVIEW OF LA VIE
As soon as we stepped foot into La Vie, we were greeted by the friendliest crew and an irresistible spread of Filipino delights. Oh, the flavors! The grilled pork liempo was a melt-in-your-mouth goodness, perfectly complemented by their garlic fried rice. And don’t even get us started on the pochero, grilled bangus, chicken inasal, lumpia, and their special bihon – each bite bursting with umami goodness! But, the dinakdakan stole the spotlight with its creamy texture and just the right amount of spice to kickstart your taste buds. And let’s not forget the thirst-quenching pitchers of blue lemonade and pink lychee that sealed the deal on a perfect dining experience.
As the night came, we stayed at the tables near the cottages to enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the beach. With the live band setting the mood, we settled in and listened to the songs that filled the air while the waves kissed the shore and the stars twinkle above.

Sugboanons, get your sunscreens and umbrellas ready as Cebu may hit beyond 50-degrees Celsius!
Photo from Canva
According to Jhomer Eclarino, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical & Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) weather specialist in the Visayas, Cebu’s heat index may range from 42 to 51 degrees Celsius. This is considered to be at a dangerous level, especially since it can last for months.
Heat cramps, the rise of high blood pressure, extreme exhaustion, and heat strokes are possible as the dry season intensifies. At the time, it is also advisable to lessen outdoor activities.
Photo from Canva
Last March 22, 2024, PAGASA officially declared the beginning of the Philippines’ summer seasons, while Eclarino stated that the El Niño phenomenon causes the drought, “We declared officially the start of warm, dry season or what we call ‘tag-init (summer) sa Pilipinas’, at the same time we are also monitoring the ongoing El Niño phenomenon also, thus, we can feel more the intense heat.”
Photo from Canva
WHAT IS A HEAT INDEX?
The heat index is the temperature that humans feel based on air temperature and humidity. So, it may not be what the thermometer reads, but when you feel like it’s 40 degrees Celsius, then that’s the heat index, but the actual temperature reading may be beyond 40 degrees.
Eclarino added that based on Cebu’s historical data, the highest temperature and heat index usually occur during May. Today’s highest temperature recorded was on May 31, 2010, when the surface temperature was 37 degrees and the heat index was 49 degrees.
Photo from Canva
Aside from Cebu, the provinces of Antique, Samar & Eastern Samar, Guimaras, Iloilo, Leyte, Negros Oriental & Occidental, and Biliran also currently experience drought.
On the contrary, Eclarino stated, “That is good news that we are typhoon-free or tropical cyclone-free in the two weeks,” as he forecasted that there would be no typhoons for the Visayas region from the Holy Week to the first week of April 2024.

Harvard removed the cover of a book bound in human skin!
This year, the University of Harvard made a significant move by removing the bound human skin of the book “Des Destinées de l’Ame,” or the “Destinies of the Soul.” This book, authored by Arsène Houssaye (1814–1896) and published by C. Lévi in Paris, holds a unique place in history. However, the original owner of the book, Dr. Ludovic Bouland (1839–1933), was the one who bound it with real human skin, adding a macabre twist to its story.
Photo from thehistoryblog.com
The Harvard Library acquired the book in 1934, but it was only discovered in 2014 that it was bound using the real human skin of a female.
THE HISTORY
Photo from thehistoryblog.com
The author, Houssaye, gifted the book to Dr. Bouland, during the early 1880s. After receiving, Dr. Bouland decided on the cover and even added a note inside the book stating that “a book about the human soul deserved to have a human covering.” In addition, he even included a detailed process about how human skin can be treated in order for it to be used for binding purposes stating:
“This book is bound in human skin parchment on which no ornament has been stamped to preserve its elegance. By looking carefully you easily distinguish the pores of the skin. A book about the human soul deserved to have a human covering: I had kept this piece of human skin taken from the back of a woman. It is interesting to see the different aspects that change this skin according to the method of preparation to which it is subjected. Compare for example with the small volume I have in my library, Sever. Pinaeus de Virginitatis notis which is also bound in human skin but tanned with sumac.”
The identity of the owner of the skin is unknown but according to further research, Dr. Bouland used the back skin of an unclaimed deceased body of a woman from a French psychiatric hospital who died of apoplexy.
Recognizing the ethical concerns surrounding the book’s binding and its history, the Harvard Library and the Harvard Museum Collections Returns Committee have taken a decisive step. They have decided to remove the book and have posted a statement on their website outlining their intent to properly dispose of the remains in consultation with the University and France. This action underscores Harvard’s commitment to rectify past mistakes and uphold ethical standards.
“Harvard Library acknowledges past failures in its stewardship of the book that further objectified and compromised the dignity of the human being whose remains were used for its binding. We apologize to those adversely affected by these actions.”, they added.
And if you’re wondering whether or not you can borrow the book, then you’re not in luck as it has been decided that the volume will no longer be available for the public permanently! Although, you can study and research about the disbound texts on the Harvard Library online tool.
