A Change In The System: Why More Students Nowadays Receive Medals In Graduations?

It’s graduation season, and there’s a noticeable shift in the air: more and more students are walking away with honors and medals, sparking surprise and curiosity among many.

Photo from Canva

One concerned netizen took to social media, pointing out that in many classes, nearly two-thirds of the students are now receiving medals for the honor roll. This is a huge contrast to previous years when only the top 10 students were awarded such recognitions. The post quickly garnered attention, with many agreeing on the observation. While it’s commendable that more students are being recognized, it raises an important question: Has the education system in the Philippines changed, and have the standards been lowered since?

Quantity vs. Quality?

In the past, students had to work exceptionally hard to make it to the honor roll and earn one of the coveted medals. Recognition was reserved for those who not only excelled academically but also showed impressive skills in specific areas, such as sports or leadership. However, today’s awarding system seems to open a wider door, potentially allowing an entire class to receive medals on graduation day.

Photo from Canva

Why the shift? Many schools are now acknowledging the consistent efforts of students by setting specific grade thresholds for awards. For instance:

  • Students with a final average of 90 to 94 are awarded “With Honors.”
  • Those with a final average of 95 to 97 receive “With High Honors.”
  • Students achieving a final average of 98 to 100 are recognized “With Highest Honors.”

While this tier-based system still ranks students, it allows more of them to be honored, not just the top 10. This raises the question: Does this wider recognition lower the quality and value of being on the honor roll, or is it a beneficial change for the new generation?

A Student-Centered Educational Curriculum

Some netizens see the new system as a sign of progress in student education. They argue that recognizing more students for their efforts to maintain high grades contributes to better mental health among students. The idea is that celebrating these achievements fosters a positive and supportive learning environment.

Take my niece, for example. She is part of a class where every student graduated with a medal for maintaining an average grade above 90. This accomplishment is undoubtedly worth celebrating, as achieving and sustaining such grades is no easy feat.

Conclusion

As the debate continues, it’s clear that the new system of awarding more students has both supporters and critics. While some worry about the potential lowering of academic excellence, others believe it’s a progressive move that acknowledges the hard work and dedication of more students. Ultimately, whether this change is viewed as positive or negative may depend on one’s perspective on education and recognition.

The Battle Of Editing Tools: Is Canva Better Than Photoshop?

0

We asked a few Sugboanons and here’s what they said…

Photo from Pexels

Photo editing has been around since the time cameras existed and the goal of being the best photo editing tool to use is always up for grabs every single year as new software applications emerge in the industry.

In today’s generation, however, companies are looking into designers who are skilled beyond what they can do using traditional editing tools, such as Photoshop (PS). This is the reason why courses involving the use of Canva and other software apps are being included in some curriculums and workshops; to add a skill set to an individual. But, because of this, debate between which is better rose surrounding the question: Is Canva a better editing tool that the long-time champion in editing, Adobe Photoshop? Well, we talked to a few editing tool users and designers, and here are some of their answers:

IT DEPENDS!

Lou, 25 years old, a part-time Graphics Designer and Virtual Assistant (V.A), shared how she thinks that Canva and Photoshop can be beneficial for artists. “I know Canva is useful, but still not a full-on alternative to Photoshop,” she expressed. Further, Lou explained that some of her V.A clients prefer to have a design on Canva instead of PS, and so she obeys their requests.

While, according to her, she prefers to use Photoshop because of the unlimited options she can do to her designs but still, she keeps Canva at her fingertips due to her client’s preference and because of its convenience.

CANVA IS EASIER

On the other hand, Heaven, a 40 year-old Workshop Facilitator and Dance Instructor answered with full-on confidence that Canva is the better choice. “Photoshop takes time! As someone who’s always on-the-go, Canva is the best option and also convenient!,” said Heaven. She shared to us how useful Canva is for her, especially since she wasn’t formally trained in the field of designing. According to Heaven, she no longer needed to hire another set of hands to design for her since Canva has all the tricks she needs.

PHOTOSHOP IS THE TRUER ART

Screengrab from Adobe Photoshop

A true creative and a Senior QA Automation Engineer, Grant, aged 30 years old, shared to us how he considers Canva as more of an A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) tool rather than something that can be used to create art from scratch. “I guess it’s like A.I vs Art. A.I (Canva) makes it convenient and accessible, but Art (Photoshop) is where the real magic happens,” said Grant. He also emphasized how many originally created artworks were essentially stolen when A.I drafts suggestions to its users.

#MovieReview: Is “1521, The Quest for Love & Freedom” Worth Watching?

It’s Romeo & Juliet meets the Battle of Mactan!

Photo from 1521 The Movie Official Facebook Page

On the night of May 30, 2024, the red carpet was rolled out at the SM Seaside Cebu Cinema for the highly anticipated premiere of “1521: The Quest for Love & Freedom,” directed by Michael Barder and produced by Francis Lara Ho. The event attracted stars from all walks of life including notable figures from politics, media, and history, creating an atmosphere that went beyond the venue.

With its international acclaim already cemented from garnering prestigious recognitions abroad including awards from the Sweden Film Awards (SFA), Athens International Monthly Art Film Festival (AIMAFF), and the London Independent Film Awards, the movie still sparked a whirlwind of curiosity and skepticism on its home turf, The Philippines. As the lights dimmed and the film began, us audiences were left pondering: Is “1521” historically accurate, and more importantly, is it a cinematic experience worth watching?

A Film With A Potential

Photo from 1521 The Movie Official Facebook Page

Story-wise, it has immense potential—after all, who can resist a tragic love story where a couple fights against all odds and time for their love? The compelling narrative tugged at our heartstrings, set against a backdrop of history. We rooted for the pair as they went through challenges in terms of traditions and expectations.

However, the film is not without its flaws. While the plot holds great promise, the execution leaves room for improvement. The pacing at times felt disjointed, and certain scenes could greatly benefit from tighter editing to enhance the flow and impact of the film.

Impressive Casting Choices

Photo from 1521 The Movie Official Website

Despite these shortcomings, the movie was filled with several standout performances. Bea Alonzo’s beauty and emotive portrayal of “Diwata” was good. It reminded me of “Basha” in the “One More Chance” trilogy. While Hector David Jr.’s charm as “Enrique,” the translator of Magellan was just exquisite! He showed a spectrum of emotions and great line delivery, too.

Photo from 1521 The Movie Official Website

The powerful presence of Michael Copon and Danny Trejo as “Datu Lapu-Lapu” and “Magellan” added significant depth and appeal to the film. These actors brought life to their characters, making the historical story more engaging and relatable.

Photo from 1521 The Movie Official Website

“Inspired” By Historical Events

Photo from 1521 The Movie Official Website

One of the critical aspects viewers are left to think about was the balance between historical accuracy and artistic license. “1521” takes several liberties with historical events, which may enhance the dramatic appeal but can also detract from its authenticity; which was the main reason why it received raised eyebrows from locals. This balance is a delicate one, and while some may appreciate the creative storytelling, history enthusiasts might find it lacking in factual accuracy. So, it’s best to watch the film with an open-mind as to remember that it’s “inspired by” history and not actually an exact “retelling” of the Lapu-Lapu and Magellan story.

Photo from 1521 The Movie Official Website

In conclusion, “1521: The Quest for Love & Freedom” offers a rich emotional experience with its captivating love story and strong performances. However, the film’s stylistic editing and historical liberties might leave some viewers wanting more. Regardless, it remains a memorable watch, particularly for those who appreciate a blend of history and romance on the silver screen.

Planning to watch the movie, then stay tuned as its official release will be on June 5, 2024 in Philippine theaters!

#TheSugboanon: Inside The Mind Of Ysa Alquizola – Music Event Organizer, Artist, & Mental Health Advocate

Meet Ysa, an inspiring Sugboanon who continues to shape Cebu’s music and art scenes while breaking mental health stigmas one gig at a time.

Sitting in a cozy cafe, Ysa Alquizola’s green hair shines brightly as she shares her story with a warm smile. Ysa, a woman in her early 40s, has been a force in the music production industry since she was just 16 years old. Despite the challenges she faced, she’s always found strength in nonconformist music genres like punk rock, ska, metal, and hardcore.

A NOMADIC SPIRIT

Ysa values her independence deeply, describing herself as a nomad at heart. “I’m a cat mom, a traveler, and a nomad,” she says. Stripped of all her professional roles, these are the identities she cherishes the most. Her journey is one of self-reliance and personal growth.

When asked about her source of inspiration, Ysa’s answer is simple yet powerful: herself. “I always will myself, maybe because for the longest time I’ve been independent. The hyper-independency in me is superb; I find inspiration within. Because sometimes, if you always depend on others, especially for your happiness, you will never be fully happy,” she explains.

“Happiness is a self-decision.”

– Ysa

This self-driven approach has allowed Ysa to navigate life’s ups and downs with resilience. Her story is a testament to the power of self-belief and independence, inspiring others to find strength within themselves.

MAKING WAVES IN MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCACY

“Maybe my lowest point was when I committed suicide for the first time,” said Ysa as we dug deeper into her mind. During her teen years, she has always have thoughts of self-harm, but never went through with it; however, the age of 34 came and unexpectedly, the unhealed soul in her made a way out: Ysa committed suicide.

Photo from Ysa Alquizola

“I was very happy, then the next day, I woke up at the hospital. That was it.”

– Ysa

At 34 years old, Ysa came to Cebu to celebrate the music scene’s anniversary. She hosted the event and cheered with long-time friends and colleagues as they had breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. “I was so happy and then pag uli dayun nako sa Manila, I listened to a Regina Spektor song and opened the medicine cabinet,” recalled Ysa. “I took all the pills and I woke up in Makati Med after, and that was it. Wa ko kasabot ato.”

Ysa was at her highest peak during her attempt and she hasn’t been diagnosed yet, however, she has been having an inkling towards self-harm since she was 15 years old due to familial challenges, “I dreamed of drinking clorox, or jumping from a building, but I never did it. Then I realized, when you commit suicide, it’s not always in the depressive state; either you’re at the peak and you’re about to dive or at a depressive stage heading to the peak.”

Photo from Ysa Alquizola

In her recent years, Ysa has been pushing for mental health awareness as she aims to educate everyone about its importance. “I met a lot of people who also did it before and survived, so now, I may say I’m a suicide survivor. I cope with it through therapy because for the longest time, I denied the fact that I needed that and I know that some people can relate to it.”

ON BREAKING THE CYCLE

Born in the country known to be hospitable, kind, and always smiles through struggles, Ysa discussed with us how there’s a huge stigma attached to mental health awareness and suicide prevention in the Philippines. “People don’t talk about it; it’s like nothing. Our brain is the main function of everything in our body and we usually neglect it, but once it shuts down, everything shuts down. That’s what most people don’t realize: how important mental health is and how important it is to talk about it,” said Ysa.

“Talk about it and maybe people will understand you better.”

– Ysa

Ysa also stressed the difference between educating and manipulating people, “It’s not an excuse nga naa kay mental health issue that you’ll be a shitty person,” she said. “You still have to work on it. Just like any other diseases, you still have to get medicated and ask for help.”

As she spent her early years in a challenging household, Ysa emphasized the need for a person to heal mental health issues before bringing in a child in the world, “For those parents right now, also consider fixing your own mental health so kids will grow up in the right state of mind. You don’t wanna raise kids right now and they will grow up to be broken people and then we ask them nganong ing ana imung life? Well, it’s how you raised them!”

“What you don’t have, you can’t give. If you don’t have kindness in yourself, you also can’t give kindness.”

– Ysa

“Sometimes when you become an adult, ma-okay na nimo nga giabuse ka because you thought that’s your kind of normal or you can also be abusive to the next person because you thought that’s the kind of love that you can only give to the person due to how you grew up,” shared Ysa as we talked about her relationship status and how mental health can affect loved ones and the future generation. “You become what you hated”: sometimes, you hate your parents for being this, and the moment you focus on that hate on them, little by little, you will not know nga ikaw na. The mental state of a person is very important when it comes to nurturing.”

REALIZING THE VALUE OF MUSIC

Photo from Ysa Alquizola

The underground music has been Ysa’s outlet, “Dako kaayo ug part ang music sa akong entire existence. I started at 16 or 17 sa music scene and, I just knew now that I’m older, that it’s where my happy place is. It plays a big role til now in my 40’s. Music was there and still is here all along with the community.”

Ysa started organizing music events early in life, thanks to Charles Calang (vocalist of the Queen City Crew band) who introduced her to the scene. She ended up building her own empire sooner as she continues to embrace a persona when joining gigs and concerts.

“The music may be loud or chaotic, but the people were nice.”

– Ysa

BlaxkBox 6000 started last November 2022 when Ysa and Keni wanted to produce a Christmas gig for the punk/hardcore underground scene. The initial one-time event turned into a collaboration of more than 10 gigs in a year. And when it came to deciding on a name, the two got creative with the spelling and placing the zip code of Cebu, 6000, for a more customized and targeted production company title.

Photo from Ysa Alquizola

The music production has grown its numbers from originally two women (Ysa and Keni) behind its curtain to more women being and getting involved. Kristin and Sabby joined the team last October 2023 and just this March, Chin and Irish completed the entire full women’s circle.

For the upcoming years, Ysa’s team looks forward to catering to more newbies in the scene, “I think it’s time to accept new people in the music scene because we’re not getting any younger. We need a legacy. Ang pinakanindot man gud would be to educate them, who they are, what they are. That’s why one of the gigs that I created was Mixed Signals.”

Photo from Ysa Alquizola

Mixed Signals is an event where pop rock, punk rock, hardcore, metal, and other underground music genres come together to enjoy a night of celebration and camaraderie. “Somehow, this might be too good to be true but then nindot man gud siya kay we don’t have to be divided just due to our genre. Ganahan man gud ko nga somehow there will be a venue for musicians, even if they don’t have the same genre, but if they are in the same venue, they can talk about it. They can share both their music. We already held four Mixed Signals and I can see the acceptance sa idea.”

ON SHOWCASING EMOTIONAL ART

Photo from Ysa Alquizola

Music and art come hand-in-hand together in Ysa’s mind. She showcases her happy thoughts through music production while she releases her emotional state through art.

On being asked how she manages her creative blocks, Ysa shook her head in humor and disagreement, “I don’t,” she said. According to Ysa, one of her struggles as an artist is to be inspired or motivated to paint. But, she repeated the importance of knowing your limits wherein she said that when she thinks she can’t meet the deadline or that her schedule is hectic, then she says no to those inviting her for an art exhibition. “This is where I can channel my emotions. I always make art out of my breakdowns,” shared Ysa.

“Music and art balances my life because music is my happy pill while my art is an expression of the dark & deepest side of me.”

– Ysa

Selling her art pieces is not Ysa’s forte as each canvas is filled with her heart and soul, a physical memory-holder for the depressive states she survived from. A particular artwork comes to her mind when asked about her most valuable piece, and she considers it as a treasure that she can only give to someone she also values and trusts with a piece of hers.

Photo from Ysa Alquizola

Ysa Alquizola’s life demonstrates that there is hope even after facing numerous struggles and challenges. Her story is about recognizing limitations, embracing imperfections, and breaking silences.

As an inspiring Sugboanon, Ysa’s goal is to welcome anyone interested in learning about music, the arts, and mental health awareness as she herself continues to grow into a better individual each and every single day. And for her parting words with us, she reminds everyone to speak up and make a decision to be happy

6 Major Things To Know Before Getting A Piercing

Planning to get a piercing? Before getting one, here’s an initial guide for you!

Photo from Zy Yuri

Piercings have been one of the most unusual ways to express oneself. However, it is important for us to educate ourselves first before taking the plunge.

Here are some things you need to know before getting piercings.

Photo from Canva

No To Gun Piercings

It may be less painful than a needle, but it actually causes more harm. Gun piercings are unhygienic since the inner parts of the tool can possibly be unclean. It can also leave trauma to the tissues since it is a blunt force.

Yes To Piercing Needles

Needles cause less tissue trauma and are hygienic since it is not reusable and should only be opened in front of the piercing client. It also slides between the inner and outer skin and is not a form of blunt force unlike gun piercings.

Photo from Zy Yuri

It Takes Time To Heal

Piercings may take a lot of time to heal, depending on its kind and how it’s taken care of. It is important to know that it may cause minimal pain whether it’s been done a month ago or more. Make sure to implement your piercer’s advice to make the healing process easier.

Do Not Do It Yourself

It is not advisable to pierce yourself. Piercing through the skin is not an easy thing to do because we have nerves behind it. Doing it without proper research and practice can cause health issues. Although getting a piercing done by a professional may be pricey, it is safer.

Photo from Zy Yuri

Choose Hypoallergenic Jewelries

Choosing hypoallergenic jewelry for a piercing is essential  because it reduces the risk of allergic reactions, irritation, and infections. Hypoallergenic materials like titanium, surgical stainless steel, and niobium are less likely to cause problems for sensitive skin.

Piercings Are Not Temporary

They may look small and harmless, but they can mark your skin. Piercings can actually leave scars. The scar size may depend on the type of piercing. Hence, it is important to keep in mind that scars take time to heal. Decide thoroughly before getting one. Though scars are not a bad thing since it reminds you of the time that you had courage to take it!

Photo from Zy Yuri

Mentioned above are only some of the things you need to know before getting it done. Doing further research about the specific piercing you are planning to get is more important.

K-Culture Next Door: 2024 Korea Festival Brings the Best of Korea to Cebu!

Maayong adlaw! Dad-on namo ang K-culture diha kaninyo, mga Cebuanos! (We’re bringing K-culture next to you, Cebuanos!)

The Korean Cultural Center (KCC) is thrilled to announce that “K-Culture Next Door: 2024 Korea Festival” is coming to Cebu! Join us at SM Seaside City Cebu, Mountain Wing Atrium on June 15-16 from 10 AM-8 PM and at the Sky Hall of SM Seaside City Cebu on June 15 from 2PM-3:30 PM for the opening ceremony. This exciting and FREE 2-day event offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Korean culture. As we continue to celebrate 75 years of friendship between Korea and the Philippines, the theme “K-Culture Next Door” signifies the close bond between our nations. Like neighbors, who are just a ‘doorbell’ away, Korea and the Philippines have influenced and supported each other through cultural exchange and interactions over the years.

‘Next Door’ Performance

This year’s Korea Festival is not just a platform for cultural exchange and performances, but this year also celebrates the friendship between two island cities – Jeju and Cebu. This is why we are proud to bring Jeju Island’s unique history, culture, and traditions, which will be highlighted by the Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Dance Company at the festival’s opening ceremony, held at Sky Hall on June 15 at 2:00 PM.

The dance company, established in 1989, acts as the ‘cultural envoy’ of the island which widely showcases Jeju’s repertoire of works that utilize the island’s distinct cultural and historical characteristics. With performances around the world, from the United States, down to Africa, and different parts of Asia, the Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Dance Company has led many diplomatic ties and cultural celebrations.

To further celebrate the friendship between these distinct islands, a traditional performance showcase from the University of Cebu Dance Company, renowned for winning the “Best Folkloric Dance Troupe” at the 2012 Korean World Travel Fair and Expo, will also be shown.

But the performances don’t stop there! With traditional performances come modern dances! K-Tigers, Korea’s pop taekwondo group with over 1.4 million YouTube subscribers, will show us an exhilarating K-fusion taekwondo performance alongside, a K-pop cover dance competition, “Everyone’s KPOP: Cebu,” which intends to spotlight Cebuanos dancing prowess.

‘Next Door’ Experience

Experience the richness of Korea right at your doorstep!

This year’s festival, supported by various Korean government agencies and corporations, will feature traditional elements such as Hangeul (alphabet), Hanbok (costume), and Jeontongnori (traditional games), as well as contemporary experiences including free Korean food tasting! Our corporate partners include Hyundai Motor Philippines, Inc., showcasing their latest vehicle, and AMOREPACIFIC Philippines, bringing top-notch K-beauty products.

Together with the Korea Tourism Organization-Manila Office (KTO), the Jeju Tourism Organization, and the Korea Copyright Protection Agency Manila Representative Office (KCOPA) this festival will truly bring a slice of Korea to Cebu!

With the collaboration of local partners such as SM Supermalls and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), we are excited to bring the full cultural experience to you for FREE!

Don’t miss the fun and experience K-culture right next to you! Join us at the 2-day festival and be part of this remarkable cultural exchange.
